Well I uploaded 108 images, all selling elsewhere.  Only need 66.  Let's see how long it takes to review.  Don't hold out that much hope, but all I can do is try.

For some reason I have never received an e-mail from 123 letting me know the status of submitted images (accepted, rejected or whatever).  Is there some setting I need to review in my profile or elsewhere to get this?  Same problem with Veer ... no e-mail status updates.  Suggestions?

No, 123 do not send out status emails. You just need to check into your account (under "For Photographers " -History, on the bottom right of the home page) to check the status. Veer used to send status emails but mine stopped coming about a year ago so I guess they stopped as well. Again, just check into your account "Dashboard" and click on the Approved/Rejected tabs ( no need to be in a hurry to do this at Veer ;)). Good luck with your submissions. Regards, David.

Yes, my November ones were approved last night  :) As they said, they had a big increase in uploads recently (hardly surprising after they jumped up in the poll ratings ). Especially nice to get a sale the other day paying over $4 in commission. Regards, David.

Worth mentioning that, by contrast, editorial submissions are being reviewed within a few hours still. But yes, I have commercial images pending since November 24. Regards, David.

As well as Seans concise explanation, next time you see one of these, click on the little "i" at the top right of the advert - you get a whole page explaining why and how it works. Very clever and, I would think, effective marketing. The same thing happens on my own blog, sometimes instead of the regular Google ads down the side I get a banner advert related to something I have looked at on the internet recently (not always something I would own up to either ;). Regards, David.

Yaymicro / Re: 1st Quarter 2011 Third Party Sales
« on: December 07, 2011, 03:19 »
Last one was disappointingly low and this one is even lower. :(
Next quarter 3rd party sales are in. Again lower than the quarter before. :(

Same for me. In fact, each payment since the start has been lower than the one before. I suspect the reason is that new images are not going over -it was never like an API arrangement where Yay images were mirrored there but instead selected images were being placed. The deal has been/is under negotiation so if no new material has gone over it would help explain why sales keep dropping. Obviously, that is the experience of some, including me. Anyone else seeing a rise in these payments? On the plus side Yay have a whole load of new partner arrangements -some live and some coming up -so sales from the site should increase in the future. They are quick and easy to upload to so I'll keep them in my workflow at this time. Any site that pays 50% commission deserves support! Regards, David.

I just wonder how do they do to catch images that were previously rejected months ago, it's some kind of software??

I'm sure it is. I accidentally re-uploaded an image I already had accepted and it got rejected as "already in your portfolio". Cannot imagine that reviewers have time to search your port for each image to check this.
It is quite possible that re-submissions get flagged up in the same way. My guess would be if the new reviewer thinks the original rejection was wrong it goes through ok. On the other hand if they think the original rejection was correct and it has now been submitted again you are on your way to a warning. Please just don't do it! Unless you provide a note to the reviewer explaining your reasons or contact support first if you are unhappy with a review. I tried this once with a whole rejected batch and I got an email back within 24hrs saying I was welcome to re-submit and mark for their personal attention. About 50% of the batch got accepted. Just not worth risking your account by keeping on resubmitting images. Regards, David.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istockphoto Down For Maintenance or Hacked?
« on: November 28, 2011, 14:18 »
Aside from all the other issues I am a bit concerned about my 20+ editorial images that are now showing on both Photos.com and Thinkstock. None of them mention that they are for editorial use only. We seem to have gone from a "connector" that wasn't working to one that's being a tad over keen to push images across. I'll be interested to see if I get paid if any images (that shouldn't be there) get downloaded. Regards, David.

Not to worry. I'm sure Jay will be onto it just as soon as he's sorted the one or two issues at Istock ;)

Just don't forget to follow the SS format for Editorial captions exactly. Right down to the dash and the colon etc. You can find examples to follow on the Shutterbuzz part of the site. You'll also need to add some information to make it "newsworthy" (search the web if needs be). I got accepted at SS at second attempt by submitting 7 editorials and three commercial images. Good luck! Regards, David.

:-) Rawr:)

What does this mean?

Sales levels -A black paw symbol against your name on the Envato forums denotes sales between $5-10K (if I understood correctly). Nice going Elena!

Off Topic / Is that it then? (Oban firework fiasco)
« on: November 09, 2011, 09:35 »
You know how it is - the excitement, the anticipation, the waiting and then finally the big night comes, only for it all to be over in less than a minute. No, not a comment on my personal life but this (probaly) the worlds shortest ever firework display. Enjoy! Regards, David. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-15611160

(ETA Health warning, contains loud fireworks)

Hi Stephen, I just have a horrible vision of you flying over Seattle and taking pictures at the same time -how does that work exactly!
Seriously, you have a great opportunity that many of us here would envy. Whether you go the Micro route or RM Macro I wish you success. Regards, David.

Where do I find my account balance now? My download stats page now just shows earnings for this month and all time earnings -the running total of unpaid commission due has gone. Thanks, David. ???

There seems to be a glitch in the system and others on the SS forum are having the same problem so you're not alone.  Not sure if anyone's written/heard back from support on it.  Hopefully someone will know something soon.

It would be nice if I could start seeing some of those new downloads.  Some have said they've gotten them I just wish one of them could be me ;)

Thanks Anita, not just me then. I'm sure you will be seeing some of those sales soon! Good luck. Regards, David.

Second quarter payment went into my account tonight. Even lower than last time so a bit dissapointed after the long wait. Hope you all have better results! Regards, David.

I am in this third party sales from before January 2011, dont understand why I dont see a single buck from it.. really weird, hope to see them soon

Luis, if I remember correctly, new images were being sent over from time to time (they were not just automatically going over like with the Istock partner program). You may be accepted for it but you might not have had any of your images go over yet (especially as they are re-negotiating the deal). It's no trade secret anymore who they are so try checking the Ingram Publishing site and see if any of yours are there.
This was a bit of an early test from Yay into the re-seller market. If you check the Yay site you can see a growing list of new partners (either already live or coming soon).
Kind regards, David.

Image Sleuth / Re: Flickr and RF license
« on: September 23, 2011, 09:26 »
Anyway, more luck with the business concerned. Returned my email within minutes and confirmed they were taking it off Flickr. Seems they have a whole load of images purchased in the past from agencies but the current person didn't realise the licence limitations on them. Happy ending? Well it would be but I'm still seeing my image several days later. Supposing it will take a bit of time for the page to update on Flickr. Regards, David.
When I've deleted a photo from my Flickr stream, the deletion has been instant.

Thanks Sue, I didn't know that. Have just emailed them (the business) again pointing out that it is still there. Kind regards, David.

ETA -They got it off right away. I can stop worrying about it now!

But even if the image were properly licensed from an agency, a. I don't think licenses allow a person to post those large, high resolution images, and b. under no circumstances or licenses from any agency is a person allowed to let other people re-download that high resolution image. That's re-distributing which constitutes copyright infringement.

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html

Quote
Is it legal to download works from peer-to-peer networks and if not, what is the penalty for doing so?
Uploading or downloading works protected by copyright without the authority of the copyright owner is an infringement of the copyright owner's exclusive rights of reproduction and/or distribution. Anyone found to have infringed a copyrighted work may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed and, if willful infringement is proven by the copyright owner, that amount may be increased up to $150,000 for each work infringed. In addition, an infringer of a work may also be liable for the attorney's fees incurred by the copyright owner to enforce his or her rights.

Exactly right. The problem here was the person dealing with this companies photo content wasn't the one that had originally licensed them and wasn't aware of the limitations. The frightening thing is that a similar situation could arise anywhere that buys our images. Regards, David.

Image Sleuth / Re: Flickr and RF license

That's a co-incidence. I just came on here to post about the same subject. Using Google image search on my best selling microstock image I found it on the photostream on Flickr of a major UK educational establishment -with no watermark or copyright reference to myself. As a test I was able to download it at "original size" (in this case 1000 x 669px) meaning that anyone could download and use it for web use for free. I was going to ask here if there was any way this could be allowed under any license from an agency before contacting Flickr or the organisation posting it.
Rather concerning that the image already had over 100 views!
Guess I have some emailing to do. Regards, David.

As an update, I heard back from the Yahoo legal team within a few hours. They didn't feel there was an infringement and suggested I contacted the poster myself asking for it to be removed. They did say to get back to them if that didn't work. I guess their response was because I didn't claim the image had been pirated or stolen and I had pointed out that it had probaly been licensed from an agency. Where that leaves the Flickr policy of only posting your own images I'm not sure. I assume that policy is aimed at individuals to prevent them stealing other peoples work. In my case the poster was a business and would, reasonably, have images they didn't take personally (e.g. commissioned photography).
Anyway, more luck with the business concerned. Returned my email within minutes and confirmed they were taking it off Flickr. Adobe Stock / Re: How do I sign up as a contributor ?

It didn't work. When I went to upload and keyword I finally (After all that) got the message "Your account needs to be validated before you can submit. Sending conformation email". Again, I am already logged in with a username and password. It just goes round in circles..... ???

Just a thought -you need to go to the email they send to your home email address (not the internal one shown in sitemail). Click the link on that email to activate your account. It will be instant and you are away. Hope that helps. Regards, David.

Hi Linda,

any news on this one? Have you received the report for Q2 or will we have to wait longer?

thx

Hi!

We've got the sales report for Q2, but not the payment. It should be in place shortly, and payment hopefully by the end of August. We are still renegotiating, and will update you when we have reached a new agreement.

thanks,

Linda

That was over a month ago now and still no Q2 payment. An update would be appreciated. Regards, David.

It could just be co-incidence but this is the time of month they make payouts. Got my first one from them today and just assumed my earnings page was re-setting to zero! Everything else is functioning fine and I just uploaded a bunch. Hopefully, back to normal in the morning. Regards, David.

Veer / Re: Joining Veer
« on: August 22, 2011, 03:37 »
I don't care too much about slow reviews, but I don't want to spend a lot of time on uploading for a site that will give me few sales. So in Veer I'll have to disambiguate and choose categories?

No, there are no categories to choose. You will only see the disambiguation if uploading a single image -it doesn't come into play for batches. And, at most, it might query one or two keywords -not the whole lot, like at Istock! Very few sales for me (on a very small port)  but just had an EL last week. Regards, David.
