Off Topic / Re: GO Greece!
« on: June 27, 2015, 13:22 »

I am all for referendum, but people of Greece are not going hungry or dying. People in some African countries are, but not in Greece. They have higher pension and wages then people in many others countries in EU, and once they had income even above Germany.  It's sad and unfairly that Croatian, Slovenian, Slovakian, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish or Bulgarian people (tax payers) sending financial help when you check this map:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_average_wage

That map serves as a blatant misinformation about the average net income, at least about Portugal, and distorts the truth and the perception of those looking at it.

The average net income for the vast majority of the population is nowhere near 1001, but being really optimistic more along 600, and now even less with all the wages dropping.

What happens is that the top ranks of the Portuguese companies are among the highest paid in Europe, even above Germany, while the normal worker is one of the worst paid in the Western Europe.

If you have a CEO earning 50.000 a month (and there are LOADS of them) and his 100 workers earning 500 you get an average income of 990,10. But the reality is that you may also have a couple directors earning 5.000 raising the average even more.

On a map you may look at those 1001 and think it's not that bad, but the truth is that most of the population is nowhere near that value and closer the the minimum wage of around 500.

If I eat two chickens and you eat none, the average will say we eat a chicken each, despite you're starving to death and I'm getting fatter everyday...

..and all somebody has to do is link the median wage instead of the average...

Over 100 :o

It would be good to know the origin of these sales.

We're all very optimistic, but have no idea who bought them, for what purpose, and under what conditions.

Anyone sent e-mail to shutterstock support?

Yup, something's strange.

60 SOD's today  :o

I guess they'd also have to add boosting in search results, like iStock, plus inclusion in Premier Select and Offset. And get rid of that agreement about removing images, whcih makes it literally impossible for you to leave. Once you're down to 9 images you can no longer remove 10% of your portfolio. Even then I'd be really, really hesitant.

you can. it's either 10% or 100 images, whichever is greater

305
their relatively new terms that allow us to only remove 10% of our portfolio per month

It's actually 10% in 90 days  :(

are you talking about fotolia?

no, shutterstock.

306
I also expect SS to lower royalties (or introduce some new program or change terms which will have the same effect) to compete with Adobe.

Ok, it just happened, I got the e-mail. They decreased the price of 4k video from 299$ to 199$.

I earn around 50% of credits from US-based sales. :/

I'm from EU, but registered on the US site, so I get paid in $.

There is more than one flavor for 4K
Helloitsme talks about 4K TVs. Most of these TVs are 16:9 with 3840 x 2160 resolution
The other 4K standard is not really 4096 x 2304, but rather 4096 x 2160 with a 1.9:1 ratio.

A 4096 x 2304 clip will most probably be cropped to fit in a 4096 x 2160 format.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution

So FT can claim they have (a flavor of) 4K.

There is, but nobody in the industry considers 3840x2160 to be 4k. At least I haven't heard anyone on a higer level calling it 4k.
In production, when you say 4k, 4096x2160 is the standard, with 4096*2304 also suitable (you just crop a little vertically).

One way is to go to your sales and click on the identifier for an image.  When it comes up click on the link for your brand next to the smiley face icon.  Looks like my portfolio has now had another mystery deletion.  Drat.  If they let us know which they are deleting we could know what they don't want which would save us all some trouble in the future.

Thanks!

I just went to the site to check, and my portfolio has been decreased by some two thirds, so that explains the sudden drop in sales.

Not completely sure why they do it, as people are actually buying my images, but ok, I guess they know what their agency needs. The only issue is if they're refusing to take the money (and it's 35% for me and 65% for them) customers spend willingly.

Resolution: Minimum: 320 x 240 / Maximum: 3840 2160

Hey smart guy, learn the difference between UHD (or 2160p) and 4k.

I'm not downsampling to UHD, I'm asking them to take my 4k content. And my 4k content is in full 4k, aka 4096 x 2304, not UHD. I never mentioned UHD. :*

312
I'm still waiting for them to enable 4k content.

Yeah, some kind of automated notification system would be useful, like an e-mail with a summary of what's been removed.

Think dreamstime, with their e-mails for images older than 4 years which haven't sold.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy - is it worth the time and trouble?
« on: June 22, 2015, 10:46 »
Before closing my account I pulled all RM images of Alamy and added them to the micro and they made me far more than on Alamy.

Alamy is good for new contributors as you start with normal ranking. As soon as you hit the first re-rank and your images didnt deliver you end up at the end of the search and good luck to you to recover from that.

Really?

Where can I read more about reranking?

Pretty normal weekend here, just an under-performing Sunday. Still time, though.

SS will have to pull something out of the bag to counter Adobe, exclusivity, curation or gateway to Offset.

Adobe have moved impressively fast since their acquisition, Fotolia website looks better, Adobe Stock site looks clean, Royalties increased, stock images baked into CC software all in the space of 6 months.

Yup. Although they have stated several times before that exclusivity is not an option, I'm thinking that they might be reconsidering. At least I would.

Maybe they partner with Affinity, so we'll have fotolia+photoshop vs shutterstock+affinity. I mean, who knows. Their stock already fell from 64 to 60 in just one day, so I'm sure the shareholders are not very happy. Let's just hope they don't undercut with pricing and screw the contributors. Then a lot of people will probably start thinking of going exclusive at fotolia.

Really! Only IS pays less/DL than SS.

These are my stats:
1. DT - $1.45/DL
2. 123- $1.02/DL
3. FT -  $0.88/DL
4. SS - $0.85/DL
5. IS -  $0.65/DL

Similar on SS, but I have no idea why it's so low on FT for me (around 0.5).
Oh well.

However, in terms of average $/DL, FT was already paying slightly better than SS.
This upgrade will only increase the gap.

Really? Is that, like, a general thing?

My RPD on SS is 50% higher than on FT...

Hahaha, this thread is gooooold  ;D ;D

I mean, given that the guy from iStock is now at Stocksy, I guess they're trying to bring back the "golden days of microstock", when absolutely everything was bought, for their little family of loyal followers. Now that it's much more difficult to sell at microstock and the golden days are over, they'll just ditch the technical requirements, put on some VSCO filters, set prices to 10x of microstock and hope for the best. And it seems to be working, I also didn't think that the technical quality of Stocksy images was this poor. So congrats  ;D

320
I think it is far from a saturated market. The demand for video content is growing every day at a very fast rate. I would be very interested to see some statistics showing how many people bought video footage a year ago compared to today and then to see those numbers a year from now. Based on the trends I've seen I would be willing to bet the jump is huge in comparison.

Will Fotolia offer 4k video soon? Almost all my videos are 4k, and I don't feel like downsizing just for one agency.

Canva has already earned more than canstock, photodune and dreamstime for me this month, and my portfolio has been online for just 3 months. It was one of the worst months for CS and PD, but still pretty cool! Hope more expensive licenses come into play soon, it could result in a significant boost to our income.

Go canva!

Agree with the people above who said stop uploading there.

Did just that when the "subscription scandal" came out and didn't look back. And the same goes to all similar agencies.

Why deal with this when they account for less than 3% of your monthly income? I just don't see the point.

324
Next time a similar thing happens, don't go public immediately.

First try to download the file which shouldn't be on DPC, document every step of the way, collect all the receipts, and if you successfully buy your asset from a place where it shouldn't be available, you saved yourself a lot of time and money in lawyers.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS Webinar about Referral Program
« on: May 27, 2015, 05:58 »
I referred a number of people to shutterstock.

Last year, I saw a spike in earnings, one of the people who registered was doing really well!

When I checked his portfolio, it was obvious he was doing well because he was copying everything I put online. Mailed shutterstock, they said they would explore, nothing happened, guy still earns loads and I get nothing because 2 years have passed since he registered.

So thanks shutterstock, I'll be sure to refer more people.
