Again, Shutterstock will do what proves to serve its customers' needs the best.  (Yes, in turn this will serve shareholders as well, as a properly run business should.)

If your great-selling images are removed from front pages and customers buy less from Shutterstock, you can be sure Shutterstock will readjust and you'll be back in front.  But if Shutterstock's adjustments results in MORE downloads, then the stuff they shifted in front of yours sold better than yours, and the best-selling stuff SHOULD be front and center, no matter who created it.

It's good business, really, pure and simple.

Thanks a lot. Although this constant analyzing tend to be quite a costly affair for many of us. ::)

Agreed......and maybe his title should be investor success?

Yes. shareholders my friend. Shareholders. Nothing else matters.

Yes new shareholders with small ports that do not generate much income seem to be the happiest about these new search changes.  Never mind the many people who used to believe in SS.  These are the same people who were instrumental in SS's success. I am talking about the real people who used their own funds to buy tens of thousands of camera & studio equipment, not to mention software, props ect. so that they could work hard year after year to provide SS with quality content.

Over the years they worked hard to produce images and vectors that would reach the top50 so that they could feed their family.  They made a good income because they worked hard for years and their families depend on that hard won income to eat and pay their mortgages/rent.

Now SS turns their back on the very people who assured success for those working for SS. We made it possible for SS's employees to enjoy good incomes and perks such as gym memberships, massages, free breakfasts, free drinks and weekly pizza parties.

Maybe they should come to breakfast, lunch and dinner at some of the houses they are robbing of shelter and food so that they can reduce cost of sale and bring up RPI sold.

Fantastic post!!!!!  you nailed it to 110%  turning their back on contributors is exactly what they are doing. Going the IS way ofcourse. Just look what happend.

Downhill race from now on. Muddy, sticky and watery. Its public knowledge whats posted here, so everyone will know. Bad PR indeed.

Sounds like we've just elected our new union leader.

Just so we're clear.  We're going to ask for pensions, right?  We're going to demand that if we have images that sell well today, we expect to be supported by the agencies even when our old images stop selling, regardless of our ability to create new images that sell, correct?

When customers no longer want to download our images, and the agencies stop giving our ports preferred treatment as top sellers, we will view that as "robbing us of shelter and food."

First order of business for our union... let's meet with the old-school professional photographers who accused microstock of robbing them of shelter and food, and see what they did to hang on to their old way of life.  Their complaints and accusations must have worked well for them.

Because that's only fair, right?  Anyone who doesn't adapt to change should be supported forever by the people who used to buy or sell their work.  Just want to make sure I'm reading you correctly, if you're going to be representing my interests.

Gang, Shutterstock is a store, and we are its suppliers.

The needs of any store's customers change over time, and if the store wants to thrive, it is constantly watching how its customers shop, and it will give more shelf space / better shelf space to the stuff that is in demand AT THIS MOMENT, not what was selling well five years ago.

Should the store worry about whether its top suppliers from five years ago can afford to buy new equipment or even feed its workers' families?  Come on, chaps, this is business.  Let's all think like business people.  No one owes us any special treatment for being best sellers "back in the day."  If we're no longer supplying product their customers need right now, you can't expect them to give us special treatment.

Shutterstock is doing the best it can to serve its customers' needs, and that's good for US as much as it is good for THEM.  It's in our interest that Shutterstock does well, don't you think?

Wow, that's one ugly chart.

Still, I don't believe in Alexa.  (I work in the media world for my "day job" and most people laugh at Alexa.)

I can say that my numbers compared to a year ago are pretty flat.  On the one hand, I've been glad I'm not down... but on the other, I've probably increased my port size by about 30%, so I should be doing better than I am.

EDIT:  I've also been pretty inactive on IS and DT for the past year, and my sales on those two sites have been flat or slightly up vs. year ago numbers... that tells me I'm either dodging the trend, or Alexa's data is not to be trusted.

I don't look at Alexa since it's not considered very credible, but this data is not surprising.

Good Friday and Easter (Mar 29 and 31 this year) are typically the start of the slow season, which stretches all the way into the end of August.

Jan - March are typically strong months, which makes this drop very pronounced.

Can Alexa show you monthly data going back a year or two?  It should show similar dips every year.

Thanks, Scott!

Part of me wants to reach out to SS to ask about these...

But another more paranoid part of me doesn't want to raise my hand and say "Excuse me, I suspect there's a problem here" and watch them all get erased.

On another note...

Unless there's a lag in reporting, it looks like the SODs have stopped.  Needless to say, a new BDE!!!  (I'll probably remove these from my daily stats I keep, because this will likely end up beating my previous BDE by about 200%.  Going to really throw my tracking and trend lines out of whack.)

OK good that SS support appears to be watching this thread and read my comment...

Did you hear from someone at SS?  Did they suggest anything that they might not be legit?

Keep us posted.

Now there are a bunch showing up at $16.50 each.

Anyone seeing these?

Oh great.

Someone in the SS forum pointed out that we could look up on the Shutterstock map on the submit main page to see where the buyer is located.

I just checked... Looks like they've been downloaded from a single location in Africa.

Maybe it's that Nigerian prince who keeps wanting to send me $14,000,000!!!
Same location here so it's most likely a fraud

Someone on SS forum pointed out that if the top left corner of the image is in the Ocean to the left of Africa, it simply means SS can't determine the buyer's location.  Other images on the map have a little dot on the upper left corner of the thumbnail, as if targeting the location.  But these SODs have no dot on the corner, which could suggest SS doesn't know the actual location of the buyer.

Still crossing all my fingers and toes that these are legit.

Someone posted a thread on the SS forum, saying that someone posted a thread on this forum.

Will be interesting to see what the response is there...

Same here. Must be some delayed sales?

But are yours of similar subject matter, suggesting a single buyer?  That would point to all of them being bought at once.  My SODs today could be grouped by a few similar themes... mostly business concepts.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Do I have to worry?
« on: April 25, 2013, 12:30 »
The other thing I'm wondering is if there was a "clog" in the system that didn't flow these through to be reported as they happened, and we're seeing a big dump of them right now in our reports.

But I have had several SODs earlier in the week, so that theory might not hold water.

Could it be there's a single buyer out there buying tons of our images as SODs today?  Or did some kid swipe his parent's credit card and we're going to see these downloads erased when Daddy gets home and calls to demand a refund?

If these stay, drinks on me!!!

Anyone else seeing these?

I was just about to start the same thread.  I had dozens of "Single & Other Downloads" all show up at once.

Did you mean ELs or the "Single Downloads"?

Sure looks fishy, but here's hoping they're legit!!!!

UPDATE:  Just looked at all those Single Downloads and many of them do appear to be similar subject matter, suggesting a single buyer.  But why wouldn't someone just by a subscription?  That's what makes this look like it can't be real.  Who would do this?

StockFresh / Re: Stopfresh
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:47 »
Haven't been posting much lately.  (Once in a while I come in and look around, but the site seems to be 90% Symbiostock these days and I won't pay much attention to that until it starts paying off for people.)

But I have to chime in with my take on Stockfresh.

I see it as the most promising of the up-and-coming sites.

I get at least one payout every month... as of today, I've earned about $60 this month there.

Peter is a good guy, who ran an excellent site before that we all loved, and I believe he can grow Stockfresh into being another real player.

It boils down to this... if you sell well at the big sites, you WILL make money at Stockfresh.  If you can't sell on the other sites, don't complain about Stockfresh... you have bigger problems to worry about.

General Stock Discussion / Re: how is it possible?
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:45 »
I was going to say the agencies are probably giving him special treatment because of the volume of his sales, but that's not the case on DT... he only has 390 images there and his downloads per image is only 0.44.

I'm guessing DT is asleep at the wheel for the holidays.  Seems like there have been some serious lag time in reporting sales over the break, with the worst lags happening today.  (Do they have people manually pushing data through the system for reporting?  That's what it seems like when there are hours with no sales reported, then a huge wave at once, then another long gap with nothing.)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Are DT sales being reported?

No DT sales showing up for me yet today.  Anyone else seeing sales today?  Just a reporting lag?

Very odd, since I averaged $10-$15 dollars most days during the holiday break, and now on Jan 2, when many people are returning to work, everything comes to a halt at DT (most other sites are getting back to normal today.)

General Stock Discussion / Re: December 2012 Stats Thread
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:51 »

Dec 2012 vs Nov 2012: down 20% (typical for me)

Dec 2012 vs Dec 2011: down 10%
This is very unusual, but I know there are two causes:
- SS gave me an enormous number of ELs in Dec 2011 (still don't know why this brief EL run happened)
- FT hadn't yet started punishing me for being Emerald, so I was riding high there in Dec 2011

Total income 2012 vs 2011: up 25%
I'm very happy with this, and as long as things proceed without hiccups at the major players in 2013, I'm hopeful that I'll see similar growth this year.  Fingers crossed.

Is anyone turning him in to the various agencies?

Wow, look at his stuff on Fotolia.  It's all based on 3-credit pricing.  He must sell a LOT there as well.

If he wasn't such a thief, I would actually feel sorry for this guy.  He seems to have good skills, and he clearly makes a lot of money in microstock, and if justice is served, his whole world is about to come crashing down.

I wonder if he supports a family from this income.  He's about to lose it all.  Very sad.  I'm very curious to see how this plays out.

I am sure they will ban him, they are already

They are already what?  The offender's port is still live.

This guy must make a lot of money for SS.  I wonder if they'll kick him out completely, or just the ones that infringe?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sales Plunk- December Cliff Starts
« on: December 20, 2012, 14:41 »
Looking back at past years of data, it does appear that the Thursday before Christmas week is the day the slide starts.

For some reason for me today, though, sales are chugging along like normal.

I would suspect things to really pick up again the week of Jan 7.

(As for Stockfresh... I'm at 78 downloads so far this month, my BME there.  As for Cutcaster... I uploaded a few things as  a test a few years ago, but never really took them seriously.  In my mind, Stockfresh is a real up and comer, and you can ignore them at your peril.)

323
General Stock Discussion / Re: # Sites > 10% of your income?
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:30 »
SS = 32.3%
FT = 21.1%
DT = 13.2%
IS = 12.8%
CanStockPhoto = 5.2%
BigStock = 4.9%
123 = 4.4%
DP = 4.4%

But these figures are all-time.

If I crunched the numbers for the past year, I think FT would each come down a few percentage points each, and BigStock, DP and 123 would be closer to 10%.

Weird thing just happened.

My 7-day ranking has been getting worse this past week, taking a big hit every day, while my all-time number has remained exactly the same.

But get this... today my all-time ranking went UP one.  How is that even possible?

325
I don't think it's to do with DP.

Yes, it does.
