Adobe Stock / Re: Exclusive image sales at Fotolia?
« on: March 20, 2010, 11:25 »
About 13 % of my portfolio is exclusive at FT and they earn me a good share of money. I plan to bring produce further images for exclusive use at FT - but it will be content specifically targeted to the European/ German market.

I know the cost is high for the speedlight. It just gave me two things in one - a trigger (though not fool proof) and a second high powered flash. I had thought about just buying the transmitter and another Speedlight 430 instead, but decided against it. Love the 580 though, I think it has definitely more power, nice handling and now I wish it had been my first flash instead of my second.

I bought another speedlight (580EX) to trigger the speedlight off camera.  ;) Not the most cost efficient solution though.

Ah, I love that lens!! Aside from my Tamron 28-75/2.8 (which is my "always on" lens) it is my favorite toy to play with, especially in studio conditions.  Enjoy it!
Mat, am sure you'll love it too!

General Stock Discussion / Re: 2010 Microstock goals
« on: December 25, 2009, 04:42 »
I only had low expectations for 2009 in Microstock and did not reach any. I've been (more or less) on creative hiatus since June and barely uploaded any images to any of the agencies. With that being said, I want to keep 2010 goals even lower. My main goal is still to finish my dissertation - photography is gonna come after that. So my goals will be - to have fun shooting pictures in the little spare time I'll have.

Lisa,

Since the last change have you made more or less money?  My monthly income has gone up considerably since the last change and I expect it to do so again based on the math I have done on the new price structure.  The added bonus for me personally is that I feel more confident in raising my prices to the maximum.

I have made more money, Mat, but I have also added over 1,000 images to my portfolio in the last year since the changes.  I can't be sure how much the additional sales are due to portfolio growth and how much is due to Fotolia's growth.

Fotolia was my #3 site in November of 08 and they were still my #3 site in November 09.  However my royalties at Fotolia only grew 22% over the past year, while my overall royalties grew 30%.

To sum up, my Fotolia royalties grew 8% less than my overall royalties in the last year since the commission cut.  That is not growth, that is contraction.  Now they propose to contract even more.  Not good at all.

ETA:  Just ran the same numbers from istock.  My royalties at istock grew 72% in that same year's time!!  Holy frickin' cow!!

This is so interesting - my  experience is quite different to yours Lisa. Of course, my first disclaimer is: I am compared to you a very small contributor. And disclaimer 2: I barely uploaded any images this year.
But I found that with FT my income rose by 67% (I mentioned it elsewhere, FT is my best earner), my downloads went up by 51% and RPD is even with the changed price structure up by 10%.
On IS my downloads decreased by 5%, my revenue increased by 3% and my RPD increased by 8%.
So to me, FT is growing quite well and I am less concerned about the price structure change (which does not mean I am happy about it). I am more concerned how changes at IS will affect me.

I will stay independent. Istock barely makes a third of my income only, so going exclusive would not make up for the loss of income.  I do not like putting all my eggs into that one basket and being vulnerable to losses by changes made through Istock.
The other reason is: I am a Euro contributor. Istock income is in US$, which has been very volatile over this past year, and I expect no change in that. If the dollar looses value, I loose even more money. So double vulnerability, no incentive for exclusivity.

General Photography Discussion / Re: August 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: September 08, 2009, 14:18 »
August was better than July by about 10% and I've had a really good month at Istock. Still, FT remains my best earner by a wide margin. DT on the other hand des not really perform for me.

FT: 57%
IS:  23%
SS: 12%
DT: 9%

I just checked, and the moneybookers option is still there - for me at least.

General Stock Discussion / Re: June 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:53 »
With the help of three ELs (2 at FT and 1 at SS) this became the second best month of the year.

Breakdown:
FT: 66%
IS: 12%
SS: 15%
DT: 6%

Now let's see if I can make some arrows turn green. ;)

IS: 19% (up from Apr)
SS:  8% (slightly down to Apr)
DT: 12% (BME  :D)

Off Topic / Re: How Long Is Your Commute To Work?
« on: May 23, 2009, 05:19 »
Yes I know I could walk that distance easily, but (1) this is Belgium and that means LOTS OF RAIN, and (2) I do my shopping right after work and for that I need the car (good excuse?).

No.  :)

Total of 160 mins for me (about). I travel about 86 km to work (and the same distance back in the evening) - 3 times a week. The luxury of living in my hometown.

318
almost 40% down from a very exceptional March.
Not contributing to any of the sites does not help either. I also remember last year's April was my worst month... .

So here is the breakdown:
FT: 63%
IS: 19%
SS: 10%
DT: 9%

IS and DT picked up for me in the last week of April - maybe there new search engines helped here. Will have to see how it works in May.

no sales at all...

iStockPhoto.com / Re: best match 2.0 LIVE!!
« on: April 16, 2009, 10:34 »
At first sight i am not impressed. First of all, i am of course disappointed that I have not sold a single image since BM2.0 went online.

But I just did a search test.
For instance search: pencil, blue, one. First four images in best match have many pencils, containing the keyword single object.
Search for gift card gave me a simple gift box on the front page, but no gift card. So if best match is to be most relevant, then no, best match does not impress me much.

Not sure how you contacted support so far, but assuming you used tickets online, why don't you call support the next time?

I cannot wait to get my hands on this book, but meanwhile I will be satisfied with the big excerpt of the book that is available on the web:
