Actually there is. I should really keep one of these with my gear as well.
Does anyone have a preference over any of the following? These would apply to both personal artwork (a painting), personal property (an old car) and real estate (a home), right? Also: what are the rules again for real estate? Is it something like you can take a photo from the road as long as you don't step foot on the property, but once you do (step foot on) you need a release? None found on SS or DT. General Stock Discussion / Re: A perfect microstock website - what's it like in your opinion?« on: August 20, 2007, 15:26 »
APOLOGIES that I'm posting something so long right here, the link no longer works. I thought Jagelski may find it interesting. I e-mailed myself this article from the web last March. I'm in Canada and there are so many cool alternatives (shutterfly, zazzle, etc.) in the U.S. but sometimes it is a BIG hassle to import things, and the exchange, taxes, duties, shipping often ends up doubling the price of the product. You can barely find this sort of thing up here. I put a lot of thought and research into opening up a business like this up here. I find the crowdsourcing possibility interesting as well.
For photographers in the U.S., if you want to add tiles, canvas, coasters etc. to your product offerings the best photo novelty rates I've found are for professionals at www.photonovelty.com Here's the article: Photo novelty market booming Custom prints on merchandise rise BY BEN DOBBIN | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCHESTER, N.Y. - More Americans than ever are wearing their photographs. Or eating them. Or showcasing them on calendars, greeting cards and china plates. In the versatile digital age, picture-bearing merchandise is a booming segment of the photo printing market - and a lucrative one, too. Now the mostly online arena appears poised to gravitate big-time to the corner pharmacy. Scores of online players, led by Shutterfly Inc., Eastman Kodak Co.'s KodakGallery.com and Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Snapfish.com, tout a variety of photo novelties, from laser-etched crystal ornaments to personalized postcards, key rings, T-shirts, purses, mugs, mousepads, birthday cakes and lollipops. Kodak and Japan's Fujifilm Holdings Corp., which divided up the traditional film market, are unveiling new technologies and partnerships designed to counter eroding profits from film processing by reeling in custom-photo customers via retail channels. U.S. sales in the specialty market - counting online and retail - jumped 50 percent to an estimated $694 million in 2006 from $461 million in 2005 and could reach $951 million this year and $1.2 billion in 2008, according to Photo Marketing Association International, a trade group whose annual convention opens Thursday in Las Vegas. "The photo industry is desperately looking for ways to replace the money lost to lower volumes and lower prices for basic 4-by-6-inch prints," said Alan Bullock, a consumer-imaging analyst at InfoTrends Inc. "There's a whole slew of products out there generating higher margins than 4-by-6 prints ever did. When people see one for the first time, they go, 'Wow, that's really cool!' " The swift transition to a world without film triggered a slide in the overall number of snapshots converted into prints. Digital and film images ordered from retailers and Web sites or made at home fell from a peak of 30.3 billion in 2000 to 26.6 billion in 2006 and could bottom out at around 22.5 billion by 2009, predicted Dimitrios Delis, research director at the Jackson, Mich.-based Photo Marketing Association. But the blossoming of often pricey alternatives, from photo apparel to putting computer reproductions of images onto posters, Jacuzzi tiles, furniture and tombstones, drove an 11 percent jump in overall revenues from $9.9 billion in 2005 to $11.1 billion in 2006, Delis said. The latest number includes $6.7 billion in sales of digital cameras, which analysts say have landed in almost 60 percent of America's 110 million households. Prices run from $13.99 for a photo mug, $39.99 for a 20-picture photo book and $34.99 for a teddy bear wearing a custom-photo sweat shirt to $49.99 for a sterling necklace containing a picture of a loved one. (color=blue]Pixart/Lorraine's Shameless plug:[/color] If in Canada or U.S. you can make photobooks and dvds on my website www.pixartdesign.com ) Redwood City, Calif.-based Shutterfly, which generated $40 million in fourth-quarter sales of personalized products such as photo-adorned necklaces and handbags, is the biggest online player with a 25 percent share, said analyst Chris Chute of IDC Corp. Its most popular holiday item was a photo collage card that can carry up to nine pictures. "We sold tens and tens of millions of them," said Chief Executive Jeffrey Housenbold, boasting gross profit margins of over 50 percent. 3038

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - I'm sure you likely helped others than just me.
I have Ifran view, but I seem to require a plug in to add keywords for some reason so I'll snoop around for that. Nazdravie, do you use the Microsoft program? I did look at the link and I couldn't find info about keywording anywhere. It looks pretty user friendly though. FlemishDreams, thanks for the link. I will especially find the the spell check and duplications feature useful! 3039

I have a few dozen older photos without info and I'd like to send some to StockXpert and 123. Does anyone know of a way to add data to the jpegs without opening and saving them (and risking added artifacts)? It seems that I can add a few by right clicking the file in Explorer, but only so many characters saved.
Thank God I eventually clued into adding the data in photoshop. 3040

I uploaded 8 across a few days this week and they were accepted at the same time on Friday (new reviewing system like SS?). My sales there this month have been pretty healthy too.
edited: One thing I did notice a couple weeks ago though was that a new file "peruvian paso" horse didn't show up in search results for several days - I think it was more than a week. It was an easy one for me to track - I think there were only 3 other similars. But - most importantly, it did eventually get there. I don't really check keyword searches much - so it's the only one I can make this comment for. 3041

Has anyone had problems with archived model releases at FT?
I've been using releases from my archive and they are being rejected for "either legal reasons, lack of signature or illegible." Would be nice if I knew which exactly it was so I could fix the problem. I guess the best I can do is upload the releases again and see how it goes. 3042

I think my B&H 79mm circular polarizer was about $300 Canadian and it is fabulous. I have a cheap one too, it vingettes so badly it is virtually useless.
A polarizer is one of the most useful tools you can add to your kit, so make sure you get the best that you can afford. 3044
123RF / What's the deal with 123?« on: August 15, 2007, 01:09 »
Just asking so that I can alter my uploading process to 123 if others have noticed... I've barely tried to upload anything to 123, but what is the deal with their love of rejecting similar images? My rejections there have been mainly for this "similar" reason.
I mean, sure, these two are similar - but are they that similar? Same model but sitting on a bench in the rejected one... And I didn't think cap and gowns are an overpopulated subject. I know, I know... don't ask... I rarely question rejections any more... maybe similar is their way of kindly saying they just don't like the like the business of the background. They are both on SS so that is what really matters - and too early to tell about elsewhere ![]() ![]() 3045
Cameras / Lenses / Re: Help me with my birthday wishlist :-)« on: August 14, 2007, 18:37 »I think I'm tending towards a macro lens currently...maybe ;-) Has anyone here tried using a bellows attachment for macro? I too am interested in macro, but can't justify another expensive lens right now that I wouldn't use on a daily basis. I'd be interested to know if that would be a practical interim-option or just a gadgety waste of $. Maybe Daneel would have enough for two presents that way. Oh, Daneel... I just bought an Epson 40g viewer/storage. Was away for a week and shot and backed up several cards. The bride and groom viewed the next day and picked out the photos for their thank you cards before they took off. I really struggled with splurging for this device, but I now realize that for me it was a very good investment - especially during trips and big events. The 80 gig was $300 more. Bummer. 3046
LuckyOliver.com / Re: Civilized LO Discussion« on: August 13, 2007, 22:31 »
Did anyone notice that their sales picked up when a group of us posted comments somewhat regularily? I seemed to... and I haven't been active at that of late and I've also have had a loss of sales. Either the comments help, or their database is growing and there is more options for buyers. Or is it that earlier in the year they were giving away tokens? Seems like there steady payouts though, so that's encouraging.

I think there is use for it, but it will not be a big seller, but should generate maybe 20 sales per agricultural season over a few sites. Like this flax pic:
![]() And... me too, I just put up a canola against blue sky last month and it has sold a handful of times so I think that angle is also useful. You can likely add background to your keywords in this photo case. 3048

Wow, a whole month - that is great.
It sold 5 times yesterday, and twice so far this morning, none on the 1st so maybe the lightbox just went up yesterday. Another student one has about the same # and a couple puppies that I was suprised had sales, so buyers may actually be sifting through the others. Bummer... this is the time that my portfolio there should be attended to and I am pretty hectic now until September. FreezingPictures: I hope you get TONS of referal credits! ![]() |
