I just don't get this... how will pricing your images higher drive customers to a new site, selling to the same audience with the same contributors ???

I chose $5 for the initial images, simply bhecause the commission at $1.50 is roughly equal (or better) than I would get elsewhere.

Some of my images I will price much higher.

And then they need to be more diverse than another 180 aircraft shots!

It seems to me that even the most successful microstock people are not even going to come close to $7.50 an hour. I would guess more like $0.50 to $1.00 an hour.

Greg

You are so very wrong !!!

Please explain your definition of 'huge' and 'drop'! ???

Anyone looked at the Alexa numbers for iStock for the last few days?

Huge drop in views.  Huge.  Same for SS.

Dunno if it's a one-off or what.........

There are blocks of same coloured pixels towards the left hand corner,  that could be described as artefacts.

I speak from experience and have no buyers regret whatsoever :)

332
A good second hand example at a good price would be an excellent starter into full frame shooting, but with good lighting as an essential as anything over the lowest iso just does not cut the mustard noise-wise in comparison with more recent cameras, also subject to bad CA on cheap lenses.Plus it's the only avenue for full frame with Nikon lenses at the moment.

333
Indeed it's up to the photographer, but that image is available on at least 4 of the top 6 sites at very much lower prices, and as a result it's Lucky Oliver as an agency that looks way too pricey rather than the photographer.

I think it is up to the photographer to price their images wisely.  If you think you can price your images at 40 tokens/dollars when images elsewhere are listed at $2.00 you may be waiting a while for a sale.

If the photographer lists their image as exclusive then perhaps $40 is an allright price to try for.

334
If I was a designer and found that an image, for example, of some horses on the 'pasture' was 40 tokens / dollars on LO was readily available elsewhere using the same user name for about one sixth of the price and at a larger size to boot, I know where I'd buy.

Unless LO forces some exclusivity on these images surely such comparisons will surely damage, not enhance, their reputation. Midstock could be seen as Ripoffstock.

I see this ubiquity of image availability as the main reason why a 'midstock' pricing will have difficulty in taking off, if you want to charge a premium on your images you must control their availability. Uploading everywhere whilst also trying to up your prices  ... just seems, to coin a  daft phrase, like having your cake and eating it.

Let's be clear.

He shouldn't have written anything at all.

With respect sharply done you've not been around this block long enough to know what can happen and why some people stick to anonimity.

I tried to lighten the mood with a response about wallpapers on mobile phones ;D

338
I never understand why anyone would want to put wallpaper on a mobile phone, how would you use the keys and see the screen, and wouldnt the paste short out the circuits ???

It all sounds a bit like force feeding the goose to make pate de fois gras, in readiness for a corporate grab by any chance?

And since I last posted (less than 20 minutes ago), Iofoto's portfolio has gone from 3,385 images to 3,409 images.  An increase of another 24 images.  This is getting quite interesting...

Iofoto now has 3,511 images online (and it seems to grow by the hour).  That is an increase of 102 images since my last post, which was less than 12 hours ago.

So this confirms what litifeta was saying (that some contributors are getting special treatment).

This also explains partially why the queue has grown so large: Certain members are allowed to bypass the normal rules (of 40 uploads a day).  My bet is that these "special" members are also bypassing the normal inspection queue and getting their images reviewed as a priority.  If the reviewers then have time after reviewing their images, they then work on our photos (which are at the bottom of the stack).

So it seems that DT implemented the new 40 image/day upload limit (for the rest of us) so that they could make way for some of their "special" members.  Gives me a real warm & cozy feeling all around.

eendicott:

Thanks for pointing out Iofoto's portfolio.  It has been a real eye-opener into how DT treats the rest of us.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Declining trend?
« on: April 05, 2007, 13:45 »
I am seeing lots of comments from some of the old hands at IS that they are experiencing a disappointing trend in sales.

At the same time the approvals list has dropped significantly from a peak of 30,000 to a current level of 17,000 (the lowest I have seen in months).

All of this is happening at a time when SS and DT seem to be accellerating (DT approvals list still 40,000).

Is this just a temporary thing or a sign of something else?  Anyone have a view?

That the queue has decreased is as much a reflection of the increased inspectors and decreased upload levels as anything else. 2 years ago it was  around 5000 iirc.

As an old hand, yes my dls have decreased and have posted graphs to that effect, but I know exactly which files that sold over 200 each per month were killed by the big best match change in September and also know that many new folks benefitted pro-rata.

Despite that I continue to make more money per month.

And dear people I suggest we are soon approaching the point that the increase in supply is outstripping the increase in demand.

Exactly! But try telling them that and they'll just laugh at you !

Apparently they now share information over more than one server and they refresh at staggered intervals.
