From what I have heard yes, as a newbie you are favoured. After some time not anymore. But you still can make a good amount of downloads if you regulary submit good images.

I just read a few reviews of the Zeiss lenses. It seems they are really great lenses. The only drawback is price and no sealing as well as not so many lenses to choose from. But with Sony's camera intern imagestabilizer they should make an excellent combination. It is just very hard to switch if you got accustomed to a body and invested in lenses. If I would start all over again I would seriously consider the sony alternative.

Aren't the Zeiss lenses only with manual focus?

In the long run yes probably. It also depends on your subject. I already experience a large percentage of highres sales, since I have more high res images. If for a specific project a high res file is required but you do not have it the customer might look somewhere else. For stock photography the more MP the better especially since at least one search engine of the major Stock engines favours higher res images. I am doing a lot of photoshop and for this high res files are also very convenient. So yes I as stock photographer will look with delight at the megapixel race although I am aware it might not increase the quality.

To a degree I would say almost every site has that. But I could be mistaken with Fotolia and Dreamstime

I just checked my royalty/download statistic at DT and while in general the trend is positive, this month is surprisingly low especially since we just had an price increase at DT. Maybe more are switching to subscription because of the price increase for pay per download but not for subscription? But maybe it is to early to tell for this month, but what is your experience?
Here are my stats:

Here's a thought I had:
Personally, I think the cream tends to float to the top in imaging searches. This is good. But we don't need to hold on to low selling images for the reason that "it might sell". Maybe some images do a better job of getting in the way in searches than solving a customer's design problem.
Let the dross settle to the bottom, and then sift it out. Get rid of it. More high quality imaging, less to crowd out searches. Or at least let it go to a sister company of some sort that sells them at lower prices with higher limit of uses. I say this because even if they don't sell, they are still taking up space that new and higher quality images might occupy.
I find people are quick to point out problems, but fearful to point out solutions. Lets play nice and not discourage anyone from finding ways to protect tomorrow's living.
I agree with you Leo, I am all for a system where images which are older than for example 1.5 years without a sale get deleted or will be transfered to something like iStocks Dollar bin. There are so many of those that when we get rid of them it will greatly benefit the search in my opinion.

It does sound like something revolutionary is coming. They did not do this when the 50D came out. I am looking forward to it.

I love it, I am using it right now. This is my new favourite browser. Especially when I am using it on my laptop which does not have a big screen it makes a huge difference. I tried opera, after hearing a lot of good stuff about it, but I never got used to it.

I think you can learn alot by submitting 100 images. I just want to add that contrary to macro I believe submission processes are much much faster, with much faster results. If you have 100 images ready it might take 6-8 weeks for istock to get them through, but on the other microstock agencies as soon as you are accepted as a photographer you can have them selling within a week or less. However I do not want convince you

Hi Jay wellcome here If you want to know what happens in microstock world, I suggest trying out the top 5 microstock agencies to the right. I do not count in 123RF. Send them 100 top stock images and see what happens. Firsthand experience is the best way to learn. You wouldn't be the first pro who comes from macro to try out microstock.

I requested to switch from us fotolia to German fotolia, and they did it. I am now payed in euro which is a higher payout for me.
I've asked the switch from US to IT some time ago and they told me it was not possible and that I had to start from scratch if I wanted. :| Did you just contact support? I used the internal messaging system...
I used the internal messaging system to contact support as well. And they did it right away. I think they do not want to do it anymore, because they realize, they loose money by doing this. Currently with the Euro at $1.48 they have to pay Eurpean photographers 20% more than US photographers. The Euro has to go down to $1.2 Dollars until its about equal. Lets do hope the Dollar gets that strong or stronger, that would be great, since most of my income is form sites with $-currency ..

For example ... money...? Among a lot others.
Are you sure? Sales, maybe. Net, maybe not.
What others? Downloads? Pretty easy to get a lot when you're spread across subscription sites where the cost per image is almost nothing.
I'm just saying, don't judge your situation by comparing yourself to anyone else.
As far as I remember Yuri ones post his stats in here. I do not know where the thread is. But he earned like 40% at iStockphoto as far as I remember. I could be wrong though. If he goes exclusive he should earn 80% right away and is much faster in uploading the 5000+ files at iStock which in turn will increase his earnings faster. And do not forget the best match which seem to favour exclusive. So I think it very well can increase Yuris income. However thats all speculation. In fact for me my earnings have to increase like 120% until it makes financial sense to consider exclusivity. Honestly I sometimes wish I could go exclusive.
Indeed, the cost of sub sales is less than pay per download. However, for a lot of photographers (myself included) the huge amount of sales adds up so that at the end of the day the sub sales win. In SS case, of course. It illustrates perfectly the concept of microstock. Huge sales for cheap money. There are the other options there too. Dreamstime, Stockxpert, Fotolia, etc. The big 6. I had the curiosity of counting how many sales would Yuri have in a few days, at DT. Because DT shows the number of sales in the user profile. So I checked Yuri, Andres and Iofoto. Well... more than 1.000, each one of them. In a few days. That's only from DT. Imagine adding the sales from the other sites and tell me how would be possible to make the same amount of money in IS only, net.
It's a shame that IS doesn't have an easier way of uploading images, i would have beared with the 1-week time for review since I got quite a good acceptance rate (about 70%). But that uploading... it's killing me.
You're one of the top sellers at IS I think, judging after your stats - I just checked. Really impressive. So yea, for you it's really worthy, the exclusivity that is.
Cheers.

Awesome stories! Thank you for sharing! Here in Germany you have to consider to that half or more than half of your income will go away for taxes and insurance and I also heard the same advice helix gave to save as much that you can live 6 month from it.

Of course, you can do almost everything in photoshop, but not always everything fast and easy. Try it out, its amazing. (Trial version is free) Yes the price is a bit high . But it can be worth it depending on what you need it for.

Nik Color Effex pro 3.0 is a pretty cool software. It is available as a plugin for Photoshop. Apart from usage for portraits you can use it for many different things. The following image was a very boring normal image of wheat. After Nik effex it looks like this: http://stockxpert.com/browse.phtml?f=view&id=17383431And that was even accepted by iStock. You can get a 15 day trial version. The drawback is the price, 300 Euro in Germany.
