Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia partner sales
« on: October 13, 2011, 09:10 »
I have full faith and confidence in FT doing the right thing by giving us a sizeable chunk of every partner sale, since they are so concerned that we get a good deal on other sites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: A list of partner programs
« on: October 12, 2011, 16:27 »
It's possible that i miss something earlier...

Although I opt-in PP on all agencies, something is bothering me regarding Pixmac:

a) There is some kind of criteria choosing which photos are available for partners? I ask it, because even without a "Dream Portfolio" ( so far... ) I have the worst images possible on sale at pixmac.

b) After a look at 1 post, it seems that most agencies cut off relations with Pixmac. The few images that I've on Pixmac, I am sure that some are only available on an ex-partner... If the partnership ended, the photos should not be removed?

----------------------------------------

I don't know how Pixmac decides which images to take and which not from a given agency.  It may be that the agency applies its own criteria and only gives Pixmac a subset of its images, which might explain why only some of your images are available.

As to why some your images still appear on Pixmac, I have heard that there is a synching issue with many partners where the agency or a contributor removes an image, but the thumbnail of that image lives on for some time at partner sites.  When somebody attempts to purchase the image from the partner, they are told it is no longer available.

The guy from Pixmac is often active in the forum here and you might be able to ask him your questions directly.

That's great, are you going to start marketing now? I'm starting to give up on you guys.

-----------------------------------------

+1.  Great that you've hit this milestone, but I've been holding off uploading more content since I'm getting a better return on my time submitting elsewhere.  Hopefully that will change.

Thanks for tracking it down.  I've added it to the list of partner programs.

Hi everybody,
We've seen a lot of guesswork going on in this thread as to what's happening, and we'd like to make it absolutely clear that we are not part of any sort of arrangement with Fotolia to keep prices in the industry at a certain level.
That being said, it is true that we here at Yuri Arcurs Photography, as many other photographers, have contacted amongst others Deposit Photos to make them aware of where the industry will be heading in a short time if they continue to drop prices. This has resulted in Deposit Photos having raised their prices. We encourage every photographer to engage in negotiations with whatever agency they submit images to in order to get a fair commission. The agencies cannot and should not agree on prices amongst them, so Fotolia will never negotiate any deals with Deposit Photos, but the photographers who submit images to the agencies can and should do so.

I hope this clarifies some of the questions which have been raised in this thread.

Seems like something changed.  I've not been able to see images on the individual image pages for the last couple of hours like I could before.  http://www.wallartcanvasprints.com/catalog/category/view/order/price/dir/asc/limit/all/id/3/?imageId=1390819&imageTitle=Cheerful%20Home%20Seller

Those pages come up without an image now.  I can still see the pages with lots of little thumbs.

332
Anyone?  Sean?  Its your image that I found.

333
If you meant do they know when people resubmit, it appears that's a yes. IS does also. Seems I made an error and sent in a shot, (to IS) that I thought had be removed for "new rules" Copyright issues, visible logo... the second time with the logo removed. Got a reply from Scout that I should not re-submit refused images that are marked "No Resubmit"

If they do have that software, I'm not sure how good it is. I just notice I have in my port the same image twice. It has different sizes and one is editorial and the other's not. I don't know how that happened :) and don't know I they didn't noticed it either.

Just what I wrote, but I babble and go on and on sometimes. ;)

They look at size and keywords in the caption. It's also possible that since it was accepted, there's no reason for them to monitor re-submits, only when someone is wasting their time sending the same failures, over and over.

-----------------------------
They definitely monitor accepted files.  I've accidentally uploaded files that were accepted six months ago and they've been rejected as duplicates.

Off Topic / Re: Wow, Steve Jobs is dead!
« on: October 05, 2011, 20:40 »
Sad news.  He revolutionized much of our lives.  Imagine how different the world would be if Apple never was.  MS would not have had such a talented foil to work against and the whole industry might have gone in different directions.

When I got home I turned on the TV and was shocked to see that Jobs was dead.  CNN and MSNBC were discussing Jobs' legacy while Fox was interviewing somebody who was saying that the upcoming U.S. election was really about weather or not somebody like Jobs could be successful in America today or would the government stifle such a person.

Something like this that shocking to many around the world is an interesting event, because everyone can project what they want into it, or turn it into a political football.

Folks,

After carefully considering your feedback, we've decided to focus on retail pricing rather than commissions. Most of the photographers that we have spoken to agree that destructive retail pricing is not good for the industry. We have worked with industry leaders such as Yuri Arcurs and Mark Butler (Monkey Business) to convince agencies like deposit photos to sell at sustainable prices reflected by the current online market leaders. We applaud their recent success and hope the trend will continue. We encourage all photographers with portfolios on this and similar sites to do the same.

Based on your feedback, we've modified our rule to allow Fotolia to decrease retail pricing to the lowest tier, if a photographer's images are being sold on other sites for significantly less, **without** modifying the royalty levels.

Please note that this rule only applies to Emerald, Ruby, and Sapphire ranked images that are non-exclusive, and selling at prices above the standard XS price. No changes will occur without prior communications with the artist.

I tried a number of permutations of my real name and was unable to find anything.  Also searched for some of my key images and could not find those either, so I think my content has not yet arrived.

To address the ambiguity of when images will show up on TS, could you change choice 1 to "Yes: from iStock pp only (including if your images are in the process of being added to TS)"

338
Should I answer yes if the only images I have on TS are those forced through the recent changes?  I don't know if they are currently on TS, so choosing option 1 may not be currently correct.

Here's a tip: have your used your faved allocation?

http://www.123rf.com/myfavimages.php

How this works is that it'll float your top 5% good images right up to the top of the search results.

Will work well for everyone!

When you get seen, you'll sell more :)

Alex.

Thanks!  I had no idea.

Is it possible to deselect an image once chosen or is this a one time choice?

Just been contacted via email by two new sites does anyone know anything about either of them? first one is VectoRain and www.photokore.com

Neither of them are referral links!

------------------------------------------------
When you say you were contacted, do you mean they asked you to submit your images to them?  I realize you might not know the answer to this, but are the two related?  Would think it odd to receive two unsolicited unrelated requests to join at the same time.

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=334953&page=1

"Greetings from iStockalypse Milan.

There was a time when things were relatively simple & linear around here, from a Content perspective: we would grow the collection exponentially on a monthly basis, we would inspect those files from our contributor base & welcome them into our corpus. End of story, frankly.

The rules were simple, for all file types: if the technical quality was up to our evolving standards & if those assets were safe from an Intellectual Property perspective, they were coming in. That simple yet effective system enabled us to transform stock photography & create what progressively became one of the very best royalty-free corpus in the entire industry.

Now, to ensure that we fully support all efforts related to International Development at iStockphoto & sync with Marketing initiatives in a much more structured fashion, it is time for Content to readdress a thing or two as to how we interact with our ever growing community of artists.

For months now, we have been working on a string of initiatives aimed at assisting our community of contributing artists. I will be sharing more, way more from that front in the upcoming weeks. Let's just state that we are on a mission to simplify the ingestion process as well as the inspection process, enrich our collections with fantastic files that are fully relevant to Key Regions needs as well as making sure that we cover major markets as never before.

Creative Research & information sharing will be key to make this happen... in order to make sure that we reach the next level of our evolution.

We need a voice that speaks to the needs of our artists: a voice dedicated to our next challenge as a community.

Within this context, it is my pleasure to announce the nomination of Andrew Wedderburn, as Manager, Creative Resources, Content, effective immediately.

In this new position at iStock, Andrew's mandate is to increase strategic information flow and streamline content communication... as well as to assist both iStockphoto and Getty Images Content management teams (all file types) with Creative Research initiatives.

The power of this community is fascinating... and this is a bold day, people.

Please join me in welcoming Andrew to Content... and thank you so very much indeed."
---------------------------------------------------

to ensure that we fully sync with Marketing initiatives in a much more structured fashion, it is time for Content to readdress a thing or two as to how we interact with our ever growing community of artists scares me.  Does this mean in part that they will start to reject/disfavor new content that previously was easily accepted and sold well because it does not now fully sync with the prevailing winds/whims?  Maybe it means that they will publically ID certain types of content that they feel are lacking and give priority inspection or better best match placement to content that fills that void?

we are on a mission to simplify the inspection process  Inspector layoffs possible as part of simplification?  Inspection must be a significant overhead on a per file basis and cutting overhead is an easy way to grow the bottom line without needing to growing the top line, just like cutting commissions is.

enrich our collections with fantastic files that are fully relevant to Key Regions needs as well as making sure that we cover major markets as never before  Wonder what they think the Key Regions are?  Guess they could be potentially big markets where Getty does not sell much currently, since they are different then major markets.  China?  India?  Certainly opportunities are there, but lots of problems including smaller budgets and higher IP theft.  Maybe lower prices/commissions for images sold to key regions to match smaller local budgets?

OK, any idle speculation about what JJRD means in his 'Member rogermexico and Content' post when he says, which he already hinted at in an earlier post (something about 'impossibly compressed files'):
"we are on a mission to simplify the ingestion process as well as the inspection process, enrich our collections with fantastic files that are fully relevant to Key Regions needs as well as making sure that we cover major markets as never before."
Does it mean they'll be re-examining my naturally-flat-light rainforest rejections, and it might be worth submitting more?
I doubt it.
I'm guessing that there is going to be a huge ingestion of files from some of Getty's other partner sites that would not meet current inspection requirements. Whereas there should be a long process sorting out EdStock's captions and keywords.

I'm not sure why he keeps making these uninformative posts which only lead to the sort of speculation I've indulged in above. And the reality is always worse than anything I've speculated. :-(

----------------------------------

He means that they have a massive project that starts out well intentioned to simplify/speed the approval process including accepting some content they would not before, but the vision is in the process of being destroyed by a combination of poor IT execution and Getty corrupting all ideas to squeeze out another penny.

Upshot will be a mixed bag - faster inspections but independents being screwed just a bit more, with the whole thing poorly executed.

"I'm not sure why he keeps making these uninformative posts which only lead to the sort of speculation I've indulged in above."

Because he's an idiot/geek who gets excited by possibilities but does not execute details.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Factors which influence Best Match
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:48 »
I think they also throw in several randomizer elements to disguise the basic building blocks of the best match keep it ever moving so that lagereek's complete computer genius friend from Thomas-Knoll and Adobe can't ID any factors that contributors can manipulate.

Something like files that end in an odd number get a best match boost on odd numbered days and not on evens.  Or files accepted in April get best match boost for 3 days then files from January get a best match boost for 5.

Veer appreciates your feedback and we are listening.  We are working through some new scenarios for our subscription model and will announce an adjustment within the next day or so.  Stay tuned.  And meantime, keep the ideas flowing.

Aaron

Regardless of how your revised model turns out, I really appreciate Veer's willingness to hear our feedback.  I agree with what others have said about the importance of a price floor closer to the industry average and better EL compensation.
