Volume discounts shouldn't start at a $10 level - at a bare minimum, that's what must change.

3377
But what about the royalty on the Dollar Photo Club sales themselves - is that changing? 25% of $1 is 25 cents - so the existing rates would apply, correct?

The fact that her posts have gone dark because of too many [-1]s is the same as stifling her, gagging her.  You took away the one thing she has to offer you; sound advice.

I know you aren't familiar with the forums, but anyone can see posts that have been hidden because of minus votes - it's not a gag and the post is there for everyone to read if they wish.

I'd also agree with other people that the + and - votes are about agreement or disagreement with a point of view, not a popularity contest or referendum on a person's value. Lisa has been a very valuable voice here and I'm sorry she chose to leave. I hope she decides to come back - that does happen, including with me. I left after a series of dust-ups with Gostwyck and later decided the value here was worth returning (this was several years ago now).

I strongly disagree with the point of view Lisa took over Fotolia's Dollar Photo Club, but there's no ill will - beyond a lot of ill will directed at the slimeballs that gave us anything about which to disagree. There's a very dark place waiting for those wretches, I hope.

I'm guessing I speak for more than just me when I ask Lisa to reconsider her departure. We don't have to agree with you to want you around here :)

And here are screen shots (minus the missing megaphone tweet) of the images Dollar Photo Club used in their promotional tweets and which are now opted out and thus unavailable to buyers (click for full size)

Anyone who speaks Portuguese want try try and contact Cristovao Oliveira, the author of this image? It'd be nice to get that one opted out :)

http://us.fotolia.com/id/58904976

He's at Shutterstock and Dreamstime, but not at iStock (as far as I can tell). That image isn't at DT, but here's his profile

http://www.dreamstime.com/cristovao_info

3381
Shutterstock's alexa rank is 194 and it says it has over 35 million images. Article says 1581 and 35 million

Dreamstime's rank is 651 and just crossed 23 million images. Article says 1066 and 22 million

I don't know when DT's rank was ever lower than SS, so perhaps the article is based on ranks other than global or is just wrong. As far as earnings, I'm assuming that's just one person's results, so it's largely meaningless for everyone else.

3382
Thanks! And yes, I think the new arrangement is much more inviting.

I replied to the spin doctor's reply on the KelbyOne Facebook page (took a screen shot in case it gets pulled down

It was also brought to my attention that DPC's tweets have now reduced the total number of images they're touting in their promotional posts :) 27 - 26 - 22 - 20 million images...

And then, for even more reinforcement that protesting can make a difference, images that DPC used in their promotional tweets that have been opted out (found on Fotolia, but gone from DPC)

There are probably more, but you get the idea :)

ana, you have some very cool things in your gallery. One suggestion, in case you didn't already know this: you can make small adjustments in the order of things in your gallery (I say small because the interface is seriously clunky and not really usable for more than a few spots up or down).

When I looked at the first few rows of images, it was hard to see where one ended and the next began because several rather similar ones were adjacent. If you changed the order a little I think it might make a more appealing display for the viewer.

If you go to Dashboard and then My Art you can see the rearrange tool top right.

Customers are noticing the "missing" images - more than a few tweets like these over the last 10 days:

https://twitter.com/DollarPhotoClub/status/465744399767707648

https://twitter.com/DollarPhotoClub/status/465770470558937088

I don't know where it came from, but I have had a few of these. In one case they clearly knew the image was for sale as they mentioned finding it on one of the stock sites! Perhaps they think it's worth a try in case someone says yes?

In one situation where my images were licensed for use in a home remodeling book, the book was put on hold for a couple of years during the worst of the US economy's recent crash. When the project was resumed, there was a different person in charge and they sent me e-mail asking me for the correct credit line for my images. When I said that I sold my images, not gave them away and that this had been clearly spelled out in earlier discussions, they immediately said OK and talked money. If it had been a homeowner they were dealing with, they wouldn't have paid.

I guess that businesses always look to pay the absolute minimum possible :(

3388
Ok - thanks. If it's a general bug and nothing specific to my account I won't worry :)

3389
I'd say the main reason is that IS are run by corporate managers, who are driven by short-term targets rather than the long-term health of the business. In contrast their competitors are driven by entrepreneurs...

And the top of the pile - first Hellman & Friedman and now the Carlyle Group. I've made no secret of how much I despise private equity firms - they are parasites that suck money out of businesses and leave them worse off than when they arrived. I have been told by several people who have been in businesses owned by them that the sole focus for them is the financials in the short terms they plan to be around. So anything that costs money is nixed unless it can return a profit in the very near future.

Getty has been stomping all over the stock business for a while - before they were gobbled up - but their predations have been overtaken by the massive debt and the marching orders of their private equity owners.

The irony of the small business day being the 100% royalty day is that one of the themes of changing iStock was to drive away the small design businesses that had built iStock and go for the deep pockets of larger companies. Remember all those threads mocking designers who complained that prices had skyrocketed when existing files got moved to high price collections?

Did anyone else have to log in today and get some screens with tips and then the above message?

I didn't log out last night, but periodically the server requires a login so that's no biggie. After I typed the captcha and clicked OK a popup window came up with some information about submitting video. There were tabs for images and illustrations.

I clicked on the photos tab and it said something about making sure my images were in focus :)

I clicked some other tab and got the Congratulations message. The only button to leave this dialog was upload, so I clicked that.

My balance was showing and everything was as expected after that, but I was a bit spooked by being greeted this way. I wondered if some software update had brought this about or my account status had changed in some way... My sales today are paying at the correct rate, so they can call me what they like if they pay me the right amount :)

The portfolio links does not work even if I am logged in. I have to search by name to find them. And IPTC data still does not work for me.

My gallery: http://crated.com/Kerstin

That link goes straight to your gallery when I click on it (am logged in). I've found support to be responsive - send beta feedback (link at the bottom of each page) if you find a bug

You really can't know  is the answer :)

Shutterstock will sell useful images for many years. As with all sites, some images just don't take off. Keep producing and uploading

In 2013 I had many months where I added nothing and I was pleased to see how well income held up

YMMV of course

Adobe's response:

Quote
Unfortunately, Adobe doesn't have control the accuracy of license info from image repositories - image use rights http://www.adobe.com/legal/permissions/image-notice.html.

Wonderful. So they're just going to stick some legal disclaimer on it and act like that's due diligence.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. These big companies are happy to exploit the copyrighted work of artists when it suits their needs, but don't dare infringe on their copyrights unless you want a swarm of attorneys on your back.

But they can't use Google as if it were an image repository - it isn't. And if someone offers creative commons licensing on their article, they cannot offer it on a purchased stock image, so I can see how doing absolutely no work at all could lead Adobe to infringe an artist's copyright.

I think the message to Adobe is that if you're offering Adobe Voice, you need to exercise some control, not throw up your hands as if it had nothing to do with you. They're misleading the Voice users into thinking that it's OK to use this stuff.

Tossers!

I added a comment to this article about Adobe Voice. I'll try and find other places to speak up

Better than no change, but the way they used to calculate iStock subs would be the 100% way to do it

3396
...Adobe seems like a natural fit for selling stock, but their head doesn't seem to be in it at all.

They've had at least two prior attempts to put stock images (interface to buy) into their products. It's always agency tie ins though.

@Mike - have you contacted Adobe or Shutterstock about what you found?

3397
I have had some OD sales, but no SOD or ED so far in May which had seemed a little unusual.

However, it's not even half way through the month yet and it may just be that all the high spenders are on some yacht trip somewhere :)

Envato / Re: How's your acceptance rate in Envato?
« on: May 09, 2014, 11:45 »
They outsource their inspections and things are all over the map - sometimes I have had everything accepted, and the last batch I sent a huge chunk were rejected (I don't know why because I don't want individual e-mails and thus you never know a reason; that information isn't available in a summary or on the web site).

They do sell, but not all that well (regular but low volume for me) . Some while back I voiced my opinion about the inconsistent inspections but I don't think PhotoDune is something the Envato folks pay much attention to - the meat and potatoes of their business lies in other marketplaces.

Based on them viewing my port on my website, I got an invite to join, but haven't gotten the email saying I have been curated, so I won't be uploading further either. So far it's been a pain. Any site that doesn't put the work in up front to grab IPTC data doesn't deserve any images.

IPTC is importing quite well since yesterday, have you tried it today?

Yesterday titles were still not red, but today, they are reading all fields correctly (at least on the 10 images I uploaded this morning)
