I was reading one of the stock forums and someone kept mentioning MSG. Apparently, they weren't talking about Chinese food though. I guess it is a better abbreviation than best match. I still giggle when people write that.  :D  I guess I just have the maturity level of a five year old.

« on: January 18, 2010, 11:23 »
Well, you're bronze, so I wouldn't worry about the lock in deadline too much. The bar to Silver hasn't really been raised that much higher.

As far as decision making, I'd run the numbers to get an idea of how much you will be making. I think I did an average of percent increase between all the price levels. Then, multiplied that by my earnings last year. I would guess that at your lower canister level and smaller portfolio, you would make less. Just a guess though.

I think the point about rejections is important. That was definitely a factor for me in choosing to stay independent. iStock has been rejecting more of my files, so having a bunch of files that I can't sell anywhere would hurt.

On the for side, I would assume it is easier to make the transition now when you are running a smaller operation. My biggest fear for going exclusive was the transition would kill my income for a couple months until everything was up and running smoothly.

My RPD has been pretty good this month at Dreamstime. It's hard to tell if it will be an overall increase because January seems to still be slumping from the holidays at all the agencies, but the RPD is definitely a good sign.

Ahhh, thanks a lot for that info gostwyck!

Yeah i'm absolutely thrilled and euphoric about earning $0,35 for a TIFF!!
 :-\
Quite the contrary...
I'm not sure what the big deal is? Can't anyone convert a jpeg into a tiff? I'm sure a lot of people do convert your photos to tiffs, so they can use them for print. It's not like they are selling your raw files.

I deleted a few images from Alamy and it took forever. 6 months or more is probably right. I did read that there was a quicker way to disable your images there:

http://www.thephotographybiz.com/comment/how-to-effectively-delete-an-image-off-alamy-straight-away/

I think this was it, although it sounds like it doesn't delete them from lightboxes and such.

Why does everything have to have the word photography in it? Where's the love for the rest of us stockers?

I noticed that the advanced price search for illustrations went to ranges to lump the exclusives and non-exclusives together, so it functions the same as the size search for photos. I wonder if buyers will ask for a sort by price search and will IS comply if they do.

I got the survey too. I haven't looked at it yet. Piracy should be their biggest concern. I hate to say it because I like the quick reviews, but they need to spend more time on their review process.

I like Dreamstime. I think they are a good agency to work with, but I'm worried about them too. I made more in the first half of 2009, than I did in the second with them. They were the only agency that seem to shrink in 2009. Hopefully, they can turn it around in 2010.

I had 8 yesterday. This seems a little too good to be true.

I agree. I'm skeptical that a group would adequately represent my interests as well.

My first sale was $.10 for a small!  Ouch :)
Do you have a dime framed on your desk somewhere?  ;D

One year? That seems a little crazy to me. Why not wait at least 2 or 3? What's the saying, "cutting off your nose to spite your face"?

I did see Achilles saying that 90% of images notified were going to the free section which I thought was kind of scary.

Hopefully next year goes as well as this year. My goal is to keep growing my portfolio and hit $3000 a month.

3415
Yeah, that is a pretty quick decision to be made by the 11th. Especially since most of us are taking a break from work and stock to spend time with family and friends.

Here's the latest response:

Hello:

Below are some noteworthy points that need to be clarified:

Vector Submissions

1) You may upload Vectors that are compatible with Illustrator 10.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do upload Illustrator 10 files, please add this keyword to each Illustrator 10 file: EPS10

2) We will continue to accept files that are compatible with Illustrator 8

3) With both Illustrator 8 and Illustrator 10 files you may submit with a new maximum limit of 15 MB.

4) The JPG Preview requirement stays exactly the same. Please continue submitting your low-res JPG previews along with your Vector files.

5) Current Illustrator 8 Vector files that are in your portfolio now will remain untouched. This change only affects the kind of file you upload to us and nothing else.

These new submission requirements will enable you to create the complex designs that you want to upload. Some of you should also experience less Color Profile & Transparency rejection issues, as examples.

Additional Note: We want to see the type of Illustrator 10 files you submit to us as well as the Illustrator 8 files that you are accustomed to submitting. Experiment. Be creative.

We thank you for submitting the quality work that you do and we look forward to reviewing your new Vector format files soon.

Sincerely,

Anthony Correia

OK, I just read this, so I'm rewriting my post:

"We do plan to mandate Illustrator 10 compatibility in the near future, but during this transition period you may continue to submit Illustrator 8 files until further notice. We will alert you to the end of the transition period prior to implementing the change permanently."

I don't quite understand this. Are they saying they are going to reject Illustrator 8 files? Aren't they Illustrator 10 compatible too? I'll have to read more on the forum.

I just assumed HHUR was an iStock forum thing like Woo Yays. I've never heard either of those before iStock. Regardless, I like the illustration. A unicorn vomiting a rainbow? That's awesome!

Thanks for posting the quote. That's good to know that they are a little flexible on it.

Expecially as they're prepared to negotiate with independents who have contractual obligations that prevent them from going exclusive before the deadline. I presume they mean DT.
I didn't see that in there or was it in another thread? All I saw was that they said they reserve the right to offer exclusivity to people under 500 downloads. That and a lot of unicorns and rainbows. :D

« on: December 18, 2009, 15:30 »
There are already a million of those Christmas trees. The guy or gal that did the first one must be ticked at everyone else. I wonder if they filter these lists for really popular files that aren't very good. I know some of my better sellers aren't very interesting, but are useful.

New Sites - General / Re: Yay or Veer? What would you choose?
« on: December 18, 2009, 13:15 »
They have ftp but never managed to make it work  ??? The upload on their site works pretty well though.
You have to set up SSL for your FTP to get it to work. I'd never done that before, but I got it to work when I uploaded. It was a little buggy, but that might have been my FTP software too.

As far as the original question, I might just upload a smaller sample portfolio to each and spend my time making more images instead of uploading everything.

3425
Vector artists also sell rasters.

I did the same calculation as cthoman and lost 1 cent. Not taken into consideration that PPD sales will probably decrease or Fotolia will take away my share from other sites through marketing
If I picked another month, I might have lost money as well. It's hard to tell without going through month by month, but I wasn't really interested in breaking out my abacus to do that.
