That's laying it all out pretty clearly. Fotolia appears to be pursuing a scorched earth policy - I don't know how they think they can "win" even if they succeed with this.

Even if the big fish don't want to leave Fotolia, please consider opting out of DPC.

Off to tweet this link and I hope keep letting contributors know they need to protect themselves from this latest assault on their earnings.

...It's not about being "shady" it's simply an unpleasant place to attempt a reasonable discussion/debate or to share news.

Even if I agreed with your assessment of this forum (which, for the record, I don't), you have to deal with contributors as you find them and deliver news - or not if you choose not to be a company PR rep - and take the reactions you get.

I think that you need to speak for yourself, as a contributor, or speak for Fotolia - and you need to get one of Leaf's badges that identifies agency representatives if you're going to do that.

If a Shutterstock rep came in here and announced a 20% raise for contributors, I'm guessing that news would be very pleasantly received. People get suspicious when they're repeatedly misled; angry when their royalties are cut or images misused. It's a pretty direct cause and effect relationship.

If I use the mobile site (on an iphone admittedly) there is no captcha.

Is getting the captcha a new thing or it not working a new thing? Perhaps the neat mobile site is only for Android and IOS?

SS gas said repeatedly that they have no interest in exclusivity. Not sure why a failing agency's dumb program would change their mind

I think somehow, this is a historic day - the first time that Fotolia responds to the wishes of contributors 8)

It's the second (that I know of). When they first introduced subscriptions (I think in 2006 but I'm not certain of the date) the deal was crap in terms of royalty and the subs sales did not count towards your silver/gold/emerald level. A number of us withheld uploads as a protest - subscriptions live on a a steady stream of new content or people don't renew.

Fotolia upped the royalty and made 4 subs downloads count as one credit download for level purposes.

The only bad news about them making a change this time is it seems to signal they're not in a great position financially (if they thought they were strong they'd tell contributors to stuff it).

... We need to get the word out to all our friends in the business.

I added a note on Facebook, Google+ and sent out a Tweet - not to that large of an audience, but if we all do what we can to get the word out...

Now that the limit is set to 500.000 like the standard Fotolia license, what are the other disadvantages compared to the normal Fotolia subscription?

That you can buy into the cheap image program at so low a level of investment.

The reason subscriptions work at all (from the contributor side of things) is that the buyer commits to a large volume of purchases in order to get the cheap prices. When you let a buyer get in the door for as little as $10 - versus $249 for a month a Shutterstock - you're getting the worst of both worlds.

3458
Duncan's reply on the CanStock thread was that we receive our standard payouts during test pricing - not lower if the test is cheaper, nor higher if it's more expensive. He had no specific timeframe for the duration of the test. He also said that they normally reassess contributor payouts if they change pricing.

So no promises and no deadlines -  I guess we just need to watch this carefully. Once upon a time I'd never have dreamed that an agency would increase its prices while leaving our royalty amount unchanged, but in the current climate it seems important to keep a very close eye on what happens so we can fuss - or vote with our feet - when necessary.

Matt's comments on this have not been consistent, starting out by saying this was an API partner not Fotolia. I think it's unclear whether he!s just a contributor or a spokesperson. He should get a badge if he's official.

3460
Duncan replied to the thread to say that the pricing is experimental and not all users see it.

What he didn't say (but I have asked) is what will the contributor receive if a purchase is made at the higher price, and if it becomes permanent, will the contributor see a share of the increase.

It should be done within an hour or two at most. I'd contact support.

I don't upload to GL stock any more but I haven't removed my images. There are occasional sales and they haven't done anything bad (that I'm aware of) so I'm inclined to just leave my existing files there.

Just to remind people that the PR spin emnating from the nether regions of Fotolia is what you'd expect from those regions...

"Dollar Photo Club is not aimed for one-time image purchases, on the contrary, it is aimed for serious buyers, who need large numbers of images and need them often."

It's not for high volume buyers - see this contributor who was offered the membership. Someone who had never purchased a single image from Fotolia

http://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/fotolia-launches-dollar-photo-club/msg365559/#msg365559

"For now the license sold via Dollar Photo Club is a Standard license and will be limited to 500.000 copies as well. "

They've taken the text about unlimited print runs off the front page this morning (it was there last night), but if you click to see the pricing details, they're still saying unlimited print runs:

They have all the credibility that DepositPhotos has - which is to say none at all.

I'm in the US (if that makes a difference in what I see) - here's a screen capture of the relevant bits of the "about" page and one of my images, both referencing $7 for a large size. I have no idea why it might be different for others

I found a blog post from Michael Jay Zwahlen with a screen shot of old prices - the cash prices did increase!

http://www.michaeljayfoto.com/buyer-views/how-much-does-a-microstock-image-really-cost/

I guess I'll go and post in the CanStock forums asking when we get a raise in our royalties on instant sales

http://www.canstockphoto.com/forum_read.php?id=6281

3467
http://www.canstockphoto.com/about.php

I may be imagining it, but I think CanStock might have increased the cash prices (versus credit prices) for images.

What I see now is that a large is $7 cash and 4 credits. I tried to look at the wayback machine to see old versions of the site but got a message saying that the site couldn't be crawled because of its robots.txt file...

So I don't know that CanStock promises 50% (a long time ago I think it did). For Fotosearch sales I think it's 20%. For sales on the site, you would get $1 for a large sale that was credit based and $2 if it was paid with cash (you'll see Regular and Instant in your sales list.

If the price for a large sold for cash is now $7 - and I would have sworn it was $5 until recently - then we get 28% of the sale versus with credits (4 could cost from $2.40 to $1.76, giving us from 41.6% to 56.8%). Even if you account for PayPal fees on a cash purchase (I pay 2.9% plus 30 cents a transaction on sales from my own site), that would be $1.083. Our percentage of the net ($5.917) is 33.8%

So CanStock does much better out of a cash sale any way you look at it.

Does anyone have any old price data to see if the cash prices went up without us getting an increased royalty?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Download your own images for free
« on: April 26, 2014, 12:34 »
Why?

Because I lost some of my photos, and only SS has them at the moment. This can happen to anyone...

This should be an indicator that you need a solid plan for backup and archive - and it can't be to go to the agencies (who can't give you back your RAW files or edited PSDs, if you're a photographer; illustrators would do better in many cases, but even an EPS 10 is not the same as the original AI file).

It sounds harsh, but if you're going to make money from your images you need to have them backed up. There are a number of threads on MSG about the various approaches people use.

It'd be nice if the agencies would do special cases once in a blue moon if someone suffered a catastrophic loss, but I think they'd just become the lazy person's backup strategy if they allowed downloads of your own files as a matter of course.

For $50 a year (just about what Martha had to pay Shutterstock for a few files) Backblaze will back up an unlimited amount of your data (from one computer). It's not an archive solution, but it's not all that expensive and is completely automatic once set up.

Having walked away from several sites over the lack of an opt out for partner deals and other anti-contributor options, if I were still with Fotolia I'd join your May day rally. As it is, I  can just cheer you on from the sidelines :)

Publicize this wherever you can ( including on Twitter, where they're promoting the Dollar Photo Club heavily). Getting the word out to designers that content is going away might make them less inclined to sign up.

Did you see the promotional video they made for Dollar Photo Club?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E3SkLrkjoY

And as far as who owns it, on Twitter they're telling people that Fotolia is their parent company

https://twitter.com/DollarPhotoClub/status/459300955239223296

Edited to add a link to a post a made a couple of months ago when this sad site first appeared - explaining how much more Fotolia will make of the total buyer price compared to their current plans. It's a a truly despicable attempt to screw everyone while making a little more money for themselves - at least in the short term.

... I hope they'll develop more of the non-sub license sales, and I like Offset.

My experience with Shutterstock since returning to being independent (June 2011) is that the proportion of my monthly income that is not subs has been growing steadily. In August 2011, subscriptions were 48% of the monthly total and in March 2014 it was 36%.

3472
I was wondering if this was spam, but then looked at your profile and prior posts - then I saw that you had posted the link to that wonderful set of photographs of kids with eagles and realized this would be worth watching :)

There were some gorgeous photos in that video - thanks for posting.

Perhaps a word or two from you about the subject would be helpful (I'm perhaps just out of it, but I had never heard of the Pink Lady Food Photographer awards and thought perhaps this was some jokey thing...)?

...  Also waiting on Xmas images.

I sell Christmas images year round - daily, for the most part, even at this time of year. It isn't the same volume as Sept-Dec, but I think I uploaded lots of the ones now selling well in June 2011 (when I quit exclusivity) and it hasn't seemed to hamper them.

YMMV - I have no clue as to whether you'd do better building up some exposure ahead of the rush versus trying to hit the peak season and build up more exposure in a short period (but when you're competing with the established best sellers)

Made it to the $.36 level if anyone cares.  Honestly, from some of the posts here, I would have thought I'd make it faster that this.

Three things:

1) Given the split between subs/other, your higher payments for the OD/SOD will increase your speed to the next earning threshold

2) It takes time to get good search placement for a good chunk of images, again meaning you should see an improved rate of increase

3) You only have 2450 images uploaded - I"m assuming you have more that aren't exclusive elsewhere? Upload them

4) No whining! I know I said three, but this is just a reminder that you're doing well - it's microstock not alchemy :)

3475
None of these things are easy comparisons for all the reasons noted above. In my case, I have a few from my iStock top 20 that are also in my Shutterstock top 20. In a couple of cases the download numbers are about comparable (two were 500-ish on istock) but the money total is much better for iStock.

But that isn't the whole story - iStock is (IMO) on a downward trajectory and SS upward, so although it would have been nice if iStock had continued as they were when those files were earning so well, that wasn't happening, which was a big reason for me leaving exclusivity. 6 of my SS top 20 are images created since I left iStock, so I don't have anything comparable.

I no longer upload to iStock, but as an indie, the returns are now so low that SS would be beating it easily.

The other thing looking at SS sellers, is that I have a couple in the top 20 that were there from my earlier stint as an indie and the lower $$ totals for a given number of downloads is striking compared to newer files (that have benefitted from the shift away from subscriptions at SS).
