LuckyOliver.com / Re: NEWS - Closing the Doors
« on: April 16, 2008, 02:09 »
I really liked LuckyOliver and the people - staff and contributors, and am sad it didn't make it. So many ready with support, specific feedback...

Each contributor at any photography agency is involved in the business (yes, I know it's a business) for own reason, and there's a wide range of technical and creative abilities (and size) in portfolios, but, personally, I appreciated interaction with friendly, helpful people who shared passion for photography at LuckyOliver.    sad smiles - Ann

For editorial, I usually choose Rights Managed. The reason is one or both of the following:

- the image is unique in one or more ways

- the image contains people or property without releases.

In both cases, I want maximum control over the image. Also, some publications, particularly bigger ones, will only buy photos that are RM.

Thank you epixx, that's very helpful - Ann

In fairness to SnapVillage, I'm really not just concerned about them and their contest, since it seems that it's standard procedure at a lot of sites.

Any stock agency that uses a contributor's image without compensation and/or credit doesn't seem to be taking the high road. (Color me naive.)

Okay, now back to SnapVillage's contest....

First, any person who creates mock ad doesn't even have to buy photo used in it  The Contest rules state designer can use watermarked version of photo.

If designer had to use OWN photo - which s/he doesn't -  at least then using the photo for free T-shirt is photographer's decision.

Second, it doesn't sound like the person whose photo is used will get any visible credit line if photo is used, even worldwide.  (I hope I'm wrong on this.)  So, having my photo appear w/o any notice it's mine would not be a thrill for me.

On the other hand, an earlier post mentioned that any ad that would drive sales to the site would be good in general for everyone selling photos there. I sincerely respect that person's viewpoint. However, any business like SnapVillage should certainly be able to afford to pay photographer and/or give visible credit line, for use of photo - especially if it's going to be widely distributed, even possibly in a magazine ad for all I know.

LuckyOliver used one of my photos in a blog, and they credited me with a blog sale. Now THAT's the way it should be all over!

P.S.  Since I was composing (and eventually posting) 1st version of this message during time leaf posted above, I wanted to mention I really like how he stressed the positive message about Lucky Oliver.

I'm concerned about SnapVillage Mock Ad Contest, IF I understand the info in their contest pdf correctly: http://www.snapvillage.com/sv_forms/Mock_Ad_T-shirt_Giveaway_Official_Rules_17-Mar-08.pdf

SnapVillage is having a contest where you create a mock ad using one of their images. First 5,000 entrants get free T-shirt.

HOWEVER,  in the Contest pdf, it states that any mock ad one submits could then be used and modified worldwide for no compensation or notice  - does this include no compensation or notice to the person whose image was used in mock ad?!

Good grief, I wouldn't want to give that away for a free T-shirt. Wouldn't want to use my own image. Wouldn't want anyone to use mine. Wouldn't be fair to use anyone else's image.

For example, if someone used one of my SnapVillage images in mock ad,  that means that ad with my image could be used and modified for free, and I wouldn't have had any say in it. Wouldn't even get a (wow) T-shirt!

IF person whose image is used in mock ad doesn't get compensation/notice if it's then used, people should be warned away from this contest.

At end of 2007 I cashed out at $40+ (but under 50) via paypal, and it cost 1.00 fee.

Hi Ann,

We just revamped our affiliate program last week. I'll get you an answer from our person in charge.

Thanks!
-Steve

Thank you, Steve!

357
Stockxpert accepted my website for their affiliation program a while back, but I could never make a banner or live link work on my site.

Now I'm even more confused.  Am I supposed to create a jupiterimages affiliation for Stockxpert affiliation?

I feel I must be misunderstanding something, since setting up the affiliation banners/links for the other stock sites was easy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.   smiles - Ann (aka parrypix)

Yaymicro / Re: yaymicro - new microstock site
« on: March 30, 2008, 17:59 »
I signed up because they seem interested in editorial shots, which most of the sites I'm on don't seem to deal in.  I have concert pix and NYC (outdoor) event shots that I'd like to get out there more. Now I just have to get organized... smiles - Ann

This is a formal complaint against Unfortunatecantstopphoto.com's Terms of Use for Contributors, Article 372c:

#372c: All titles, descriptions, and keywords must be anagrams of Unfortunatecantstopphoto.com AND relevant to the photo.

Yes, there are well over 1,000 words that can be formed from Unfortunatecantstopphoto.com, but here's just one less-than-desirable effect of this rule: Every image will have to be taupe, unless we can use hue to stand in for every other color.

If Article 372c , aka the Anagram Debacle, continues in force, get ready to have your portfolio reflect subjects and concepts such as these exclusively:

contemptuous, catastrophe, cottonmouth, manufacture, portmanteau, accountant, autonomous, contestant, counteract, counterman, courthouse, monotonous, portentous, spacecraft, tantamount, technocrat, thermostat, toothpaste, touchstone, tournament, aftermath, afternoon, amorphous, astronaut, automaton, cancerous, compacter, component, composure, concourse, courteous, courtesan, craftsman, cutaneous, cutthroat, farmhouse, fortunate, horoscope, northeast, opportune, osteopath, outermost, parachute, paramount, proponent, sophomore, spectator, stateroom, transmute, trenchant, uppermost, uttermost, amputate, ancestor, apparent, approach, autocrat, automate, chaperon, chestnut, coachman, coauthor, comatose, concerto,  contempt, contract, corpsman, enormous, farthest, footnote, footpath, foursome, humorous, mustache, numerous, opponent,  pantheon, penchant, puncture, purchase, saucepan, scarface, shortcut, spectrum, teaspoon, tomatoes, topnotch, tortuous, upstream, account, cartoon, coconut, camera

Sharpshot, hatman12, and epixx, thank you so much for your helpful information.  Its certainly interesting that about 70%  of Alamys sales are editorial!

I have a follow-up question that I'll try here, rather than immediately start a new post.

At featurepics, I noticed there's an option to submit photo as Royalty Free Editorial or Rights Managed Editorial.  Are there significant reasons to choose one over the other?

361
Editorial photos - is there a list of microstock sites that accept them?

Dreamstime (and Featurepics?) are the only sites I belong to that I know accept editorial pix.

(I also contribute to Fotolia, LuckyOliver, 123rf, BigStockPhoto, Stockxpert, SnapVillage, and 1 or 2 others.  I'm not on Shutterstock or iStockphoto yet.)   smiles - ann

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia, Then and Now.
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:00 »
Fotolia is my curent top earner, so, obviously, I like it a lot.  But, can anyone think of a way to motivate Fotolia to stop showing SS# on ANY kind of web page, including secure pages?

Background: Early in December I wanted to request my first payout at Fotolia, but noticed their page that showed Soc. Sec. number wasn't secure. I called Cust. Support, and person was very understanding, mentioned the personal info page used to be secure, and he'd forward concerns to management.

Okay, so days later, the page went secure, I gave my info, so I could get payment, but now I'm wondering - will the page continue to go in and out of being secure?

Yep, Geckostock's back.

Are Messages more private than Forum posts, google-wise?

I just talked to hospitalera. It seems they run a server from home. Anything might have happened... a fire, the PC fell off the table, the dog ate it ;-) - no worries...

For a business things like that are deadly of course. My own site(s) run on a shared host in a datacenter with full backup, and I'm just a poor amateur. In my medic training (I used to be a dive instructor) we were told that the brain is gone after 3 mins without oxygen. Better start respirating the victim before 2 mins passed. I guess GS is right at 2.5 mins by now....

Another one bites the dust?

So, Geckostock basically sounds down, though not quite out.

Thanks for the info, madelaide.

And, FlemishDreams, that's a very effective metaphor you have there...

Has anyone experienced something like this before?  Is there anything I should do/worry about?

... I have OpenDNS in my IE settings and I get this message now:
Why isn't this site loading?

The computers that run www.geckostock.co.uk are having some trouble. Usually this is just a temporary problem, so you might want to try again in a few minutes.

I think I have Richard's email address.

Regards,
Adelaide

Interesting, it would be great to hear any info you get, Adelaide.

Thanks - Ann

I just read your (Lev's) 2-part article on Microstock ABC. It's informative and well-organized, and you clearly are very generous sharing your time and expertise with fellow photographers.

Your photography shows the same high quality and wonderful sense of personality that your writing does! smiles - Ann

Is there anything I should do/worry about?

Apart from Richard selling your shots on a CD door to door or on Ebay, nothing at all ;-)
Hospitalera should know more about it. I think she is connected in some way to the site. It's probably a server hickup.

thanks for the info, and love your sense of humor! - smiles - ann(overboard)

Wow, seems like this could be my first experience with an agency that simply disappears.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?  Is there anything I should do/worry about?

Sounds ominous.
Of course, many sites have temporary problems now and then, but there's usually some sort of page with a brief message stating they know there's a problem and are working on it....

Does anyone know if Geckostock is merely temporarily off-line or gone?  I can't even get to the site, and, based on reply on another Geckostock topic, I'm not the only one.

....

Yes.. Stunning quality.

Oh my goodness, if I hadn't seen these crops of woman's hair and eye, I wouldn't have begun to guess/understand what Yuri +  Hasselblad can do.  Amazing, bravo - Ann

General Stock Discussion / Re: Geckostock any downloads?

(no downloads; almost immediate review time)

I can't even get onto Geckostock today. Anyone else having same experience?  Is Geckostock still with us? s  miles - Ann
