General Stock Discussion / Re: Sales Are Down Every Where

I personally know two newbies on large stock-sites, they in their turn know some more and its unanimous, BME for all of them.  ;)

All the good guys left Getty. Just wondering why kelvinjay is still a Forum Moderator on Istockphoto?

For the money? It beats working for a living.

Classic.  ;D

Bigstock.com / Re: Braindead category guesser
« on: January 21, 2013, 15:27 »
I rarely have to change all 3 categories, usually 1 or 2 or sometimes I just need to take out a category. Sometimes 3 correct categories come up. Categories aid a buyer's search. If you type in the same keyword but within different categories you get varying results. I find it useful.

If they don't have to go through the entry submission, you should at least put a symbol on their profile pages of a little crown falling off a head.  :)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutter Shifted the Popular Images Today
« on: January 16, 2013, 02:52 »
Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your detailed feedback...it has been very helpful.

We've been looking into this and we found an issue that started a few days ago with a normal refresh of our search records. The effect of the issue is that some older popular images are ranking higher than they should be. This was an issue with the normal refresh and not a change made to our search algorithms. The team has already identified and implemented a solution.  Only a portion of the collection was affected and you should see the impact of the solution as early as today, though it may take a few days for everything to be 100% back to normal.

Thanks again for your help and patience as we resolve this.

Best Regards,

Scott

I had an EL on Sunday and an EL on Tuesday, both on old images. Any chance of breaking it again?  :)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Accepted at last
« on: January 14, 2013, 01:17 »
I know the feeling I tried to get into ss several times (5 times I think). I decided on my last attempt that it would be my last attempt, so I was very happy to get the acceptance mail. Congratulations!

You are a few years too late. You will be building up ur port with a company that's declining. Congrats anyway.

I don't submit there because they are all about special deals and promises of special search placement. They contacted me about uploading. I said their prices and royalties were too low to consider it. They replied with an offer of an artificial bump to a higher royalty rate and special search placement.

The special placement (a) isn't in buyer's interests and (b) won't last beyond the next sucker they make the same promise too. Felt to me too much like being propositioned by a lecherous drunk in a bar - all sweet talk up front, but it's not a good deal in the long run

Good for you Jo Ann! I took my images off DP last year, I dislike intensely their practices.

...but you'll "rig" the commissions to earn more...?

that's hilarious. Can't stop laughing.  ;D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Why do WE get paid commission?
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:22 »
I think we call them agencies but they don't call themselves agencies, at least not any more. It implies a certain responsibility to their clients (us) and heaven knows they don't want any of that.

You hit the nail on the head.  :D

Well, we were wondering about the change of name........
Seriously, good luck sorting it out! Regards, David.

He's playing with our minds.  ;D

123RF / Re: Is there a better way?
« on: January 03, 2013, 00:48 »
I opted out of partner sites when I started to upload direct to Pond5.  My images from 123RF were still there after a few months and I had to request Pond5 to remove them.  Just looked on the 123RF site and I can't find the opt out option anywhere now, is it still there?

Yes it's there, click on 'my account' and it's in the sidebar on the right.

when you calculate the commissions on SS why everybody take in account the subscription sales????? the subs. are fixed. take in account only OD, EL, S&O.. the commissions there is between 20-30%. In case of EL's  the real commission can be even 50%.

41.2%  :)

Honestly I'm not sure what it would represent either. It's sold though, and so far has made me about 2-3 downloads per day. I know that's not huge but still money for very little effort. It's not the only one I have like this either. Overall out of about 4-5 pictures I've made about 40-50 bucks for displaying some overweight fat male nipples. This one was actually created in as a continuation of the other one I did with no props but rather a dude just standing grabbing his nipples.
I have no idea why they sell, who buys them, or what they are used for. I've actually tried to find them and the only thing I Can find so far of the santa one is people snagging it from the shutterstock site and using it on forums, blogs and such.

Though I think as someone else brought up is these are niche images I guess. If you look around at most stock sites there are not many of them at all. Only thing I can think of. I'll tell you this though I plan to keep doing them as long as they keep making a little money.

Great port. It's funny that most people here have no-noed your santa nipple man, yet it's showing as the most popular in ur port. Just goes to show the usefulness of critiques sometimes. Great work txking, you've cornered the fat man showing nipples market, should have kept it to yourself  ;)

I like the idea behind this, seems to have some advantages over regular ftp. I'll give it a go when I'm next uploading.

I work dammed hard to reach the levels I have, I admit I'm easily into the level to retain 50% but that's because I've done the work to get there,..

You've done the work to get to goalposts which were created years after many joined. When the goalposts are moved again and if you don't make the level you desire, will you say it was because you didn't work hard enough?

Ok it's December 22 now. This just in from 123rf, "neither Mayan predictions or God will be able stop us cutting royalties next year!"  ;D

I'm just kidding by the way, they didn't say that...

..and also I think we've been a bit unfair on the Mayans because as far as I know, they only predicted the start of a new era.

"If the Mayan tribes that invented these sophisticated calendars and theories were alive, they would have been celebrating with dance, music, food, rituals and joy, basking in the pure happiness of the start of yet another era of pure living and experience, not death, doomsday and destruction."

istock's demise will send a clear message to the whole industry and save our future royalties and earnings

Ironically, I believe one reason given for not going to SS by IS exclusives is the small commission paid. I did look once, was it 25c-35c? Something like that.

Just how much of a subscription site is Shutterstock?

I'm charging my battery now so I can photograph Doomsday tomorrow. So you will either see some lovely beach shots or nothing at all.  ;)

123RF / Re: 2013 is here - how about the promisses?

I think fotographer is dead on.  We gather here and argue everything from commissions to shutter speeds and tend to assume that we are the microstock world.
There are thousands and maybe millions of microstock contributors who have never heard of MSG and probably another couple of hundred who don't give a dam n or have found the negative vibes too prominent to get involved.

123 knows that.  and so does iStock.  We're just pissin' in the wind.

If the wind's behind us we can offer them something sustainable.  ::)

Enjoyed Joe's post on the IS forum which got deleted :)

If that place was a foreign govt they would call it anti democratic and call for regime change.

IS is not a cooperative, they don't have to be democratic, or even have the forum.

Democratic countries breed companies such as IS by the bucket load, no matter who gets voted in.
