Stupid question but, there were no monitors in the pic, right? (to me it sounds like a picture of a laptop or something where you glue'd another image on..?)

Thanks for answerring that, good to know :) Was wondering because istocklaws can be a bit unpredictable with such things...
Their terms say:
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH IMAGE*AFTER IMAGES AND TEXTURES?

    * you CAN modify our images and textures in any way you see fit
    * you CAN use our images and textures in your own work, whether it be for personal or commercial use
    * you CAN redistribute or sell our images and textures ALTERED OR UNALTERED as part of printed work (e.g. posters, cd-covers, postcards etc)
WHAT CAN'T YOU DO WITH IMAGE*AFTER IMAGES AND TEXTURES?
* you CANNOT REDISTRIBUTE our images and textures as part of an online resource site like our own, i.e. use them to directly compete with us.

So it would be ok, technically even as element in a RF picture....
But i didnt mean to hijack the thread, back to the Promotional use :)

Averil, on a sidenote: i've been wondering if images from sites like image*after can be used in the steel cage? You know by any chance?

But again, are we sure Yuri 'won' this battle? For all we know he just could have bumped into a lenient reviewer; search results show definitely not all similars are rejected (also from other submitters), some reviewers seem to be a lot more strict on this one than others.

I agree miss cclapper; i also think students are pretty used to get things for free. Want a song, download it...want a movie, download it....want a game, download it..without seeing the bigger picture behind piracy. Many students probably aren't even really aware it's not ok to do a picture search on google and use whatever you get there in a presentation. In my student days i wasnt different, if this girl is who she claims she is i dont think in her navity she was aware of what she was asking for.

Edit: click_click put it much more eloquent :)

Pretty wild speculations and assumptions on DT these days; be friendly or they will boycot your portfolio with their magic button, they keep your AR down artificially, yuri 2:0...
Still havent seen any evidence for any of those accusations  ???

I have been opted out and I just checked my control panel and I am still opted out.

I don't want any of my images used for free. Period. Bad enough people are stealing them from the sites without my knowledge.
I fully understand. I think it works a bit both ways though, fx. having a Hot Shot or IOTW is great promotion for your portfolio....but your pic given away to some partner promo sucks; It's take it all or nothing, bah.

The Hot Shots are not exclusives only...+ if properly credited i don't see much harm in letting a few $cents go, its probably web resolution only?
I wonder about the "free" steel cage credits, i don't think you can op out on those and they have no promotion function whatsoever.

borg: their disgrace of a site in action again? Shameful.

I have one with that note as well; it doesn't bother me. I prefer them adding it (and preventing buyer complaints afterwards) instead of just rejecting it for noise.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Thinkstock is alive?
« on: July 09, 2010, 16:20 »
I'm with you there Lisa...istock in 2009 (and 2010 until march) was the big majority of my stock income, double or triple (depending on the month) of my #2, SS.
Since march downloads have been going steadily downhill and i'm since the past 2 months down to half of what i used to make there (iS). Sure there might be a summerslump like they love to point out there, strange though on other sites i barely feel it. No matter what everyone says, i remain convinced it's the darn TS (WITH it's toxic green search button ;)).
(on a sidenote: DT suddenly is doing better than ever here...i've been wondering if i'm an isolated case? I do have a small portfolio thus not entirely relevant for statistics)

Just kindly wondering what those other factors might be, apart from the $$ and profit margin?

The real dogs specialist on this forum is Artemis. Check his IS port! Far superior to this Getty snapshot.

i just saw his dog's photo on one of the email newsletters i subscribe to. come to think of it, he's actually everywhere!
*her* ;)
My dog? That's neat!
I've found him back on 4 sites, but that's it.

Merci for the compliment about my dogs mister FD :)
Imho the first 2 are a (bad) joke... there's something to say for the others though...(personally not a fan of the glacier one either, the flower meadow looks nice... but seen it before, many times. again, imho of course)
I agree VB it's all about what the image conveys and i've seen some super snapshots (who are super because of their spontanity and unexpected impact), but those first 2 are snapshots, point, no impact whatsoever for me.... if buyers really want to pay for that i think it might be time to go do something else; total waste of efforts.

i agree ap.
I think they are very aware they failed their frst microstocklaunch and are planning to do it better this time (otherwise the dash for cash would be a very stupid plan from their perspective).
They even haven't done that bad for me before the dash for cash, $105 with 50 pictures....not breathtaking but better than fx. Bigstock.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: crazy amount of views
« on: July 02, 2010, 02:39 »
Thanks for posting about this.  I noticed the same.  Three files approved and within a few minutes they all had over 700 views each.

And yes, the main issue here is how that affects the best match placement (badly!).  Otherwise who would care?
My exact worry as well, that many views without sales can't be good for best match placing and i surely hope they'll get reset.
Another thing crossing my mind... the site's buggy as hell (earlier tonight buyers got another error msg for a while, views get screwed up, thumbnails don't show, stats don't update etc etc), who guarantees the downloads and commission counter works as it should? Maybe it's paranoia but all the above things don't really add to my confidence.

« on: June 26, 2010, 12:09 »
Not be an ass,  but i really can't relate to this thread... to me it always seemed reversed. My somewhat more 'special' stuff gets easier accepted than the typical stock things (which often come back as LCV, probably true these days too)  ???  I feel like now more than ever they ("they" being SS,iS, DT)  like the stuff that is a bit different.
My latest 4 accepted at SS are pretty dark and/or B/W stuff and you see enough others in newest too... strange everyone else seems to have such a different experience.

We are talking here about the overall trend based on the reviews of thousands of images. Not to be an ass, but your "latest 4 accepted" does not statistically qualify:)
Oh i know, and  never pretended they were, i usually also mention my port is small and not relevant for statistics (and thats why i also mentioned the newest too, as in newly accepted from others?). I can see what gets newly accepted on all sites and again, i can not relate to this thread. Especially iS seems very welcoming to 'different' stuff but i see it on SS as well, maybe less on DT.
I was merely pointing out i find it odd everyone seems to be agreeing on this. I can't,  so i posted my humble experience; i do NOT have the pretention, nor had the intention to say you're all wrong. I just assumed it would be ok to post how i see it, even if i'm "insignificant"?

I think it's do-able.  Imho you need some luck with image placement and avoid uploading similars (they are their own competition in placement). Having at least one pretty good seller helps too in attracting traffic to your portfolio i'd guess...

« on: June 23, 2010, 15:38 »
they announced the uploads would be off wed-thurs. I didn't see it until I couldn't upload and went searching though. Now I can't find when it is supposed to be back up.
Here it is:

Uploads will be turned off on Wednesday, June 23 from 8am until Thursday, June 24 at noon (all MST). During that time Contributor Applications, Moo Cards and Prints will also be unavailable.

The downtime is necessary for us to replace some of our servers. The team will work hard to make sure it runs smoothly.
