Wow. So, I'm no tax expert, but this to me means that anyone from EU that has an account with Envato shoud either deactivate their account, or report (and pay) taxes on the income that he/she did not make, losing quite a large chunk of money?

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Joins Adobe
« on: February 06, 2015, 12:08 »
I agree with Striving. Adobe and Fotolia will treat contributors any way they want, to make as much money as possible. It would be naive to expect anything else.

I'm not a very big fan of Adobe. Illustrator is pretty much the same program today as in 1987. And many bugs have been around for a decade or two. And personally I now have to pay about four times (!!) as much a month for their software as I used to because of the CC system. Only people/companies who used to buy the really expensive CS packs will save money on CC.

How come exactly? Photoshop and Lightroom combined are 9.99$/month.

Photoshop CS6 extended by itself was 999$. So you can subscribe for 100 months (8.3 years) and pay the same, all the time getting fresh updates. 8 years ago the most recent version of PS was CS3.

It's similar with Illustrator. Also 9.99$/month, and CS6 was 599$ (60 months - 5 years).

Maybe you use some different combination, but for most creative professionals, CC is cheaper.

General - Top Sites / Re: Fotolia beats Shutterstock
« on: February 01, 2015, 09:10 »
This month my earnings from Fotolia stayed ahead of Shutterstock every day, the entire month and finished higher as well by 8%!. (Both closed above my minimum payout.)
I have no explanation.

I have a small portfolio (300-350 images) with more accepted at Shutterstock. And, like most of you, my SS earnings have historically been way, way more than FT, DT, and BS combined.

Until this month.

My SOD have dropped to nothing on SS for the past few months (which was where the earning difference was), but FT just kept on going steady every day.

SS has been dropping the past several months for me; but this really took me by surprise.
Am I all alone in this experience, or have any of the rest of you had similar experiences?

Are you opted-in to DPC?

Wow, what a "subtle" ad.
I can't wait to join your agency. Not.

« on: January 17, 2015, 15:10 »
Quit them a long time ago.

Mostly because of the upload system, but the commissions are bad as well. Didn't regret it for one second.

Looking good so far

« on: December 15, 2014, 13:49 »
I don't know, but I know what the worst days to upload are.

Wednesday/Thursday, as it's most likely your images will show up in searches on Saturday and Sunday. So they'll go unnoticed.

Did you see this: http://www.lik.com/thework/aviator.html ?

I wouldn't hang this anywhere in my home even if he paid me. And people actually give money for this, and good money.

L to the f*cking ol.

The new logo is nice, but the design (both old and new) is terrible.

Image Sleuth / Re: Fiverr
« on: December 08, 2014, 15:14 »
Just wanted to update this topic again. I'm not sure it can really go anywhere productive at this point, but I think it's worth keeping on everyone's radar nonetheless.

Fiverr seems to have now taken the stance that they prefer to cover up known infringements than to deal with them. I've been noticing this mostly on the design side of things, logos in particular. Fiverr regularly advertises their logo design services on Facebook, often using images of work that was done through Fiverr gigs but shows stock logo templates, stock graphics, copied designs, etc. And of course people point this out in the comments on Facebook, but Fiverr just deletes the comments.

I've actually linked to the original stock graphic showing exactly where a Fiverr "designer" got the image they used in the logo and instead of deleting the ad or the ad image, they just delete my comment.

So they know full well what they're doing, that they're ripping off not only artists and photographers but also their own customers by selling this stuff as "custom" design, and their course of action when faced with it is to try and sweep it under the rug.

Again, I'm not sure what (if anything) can be done to stop Fiverr at this point. They're making lots of money by being dickbags, and I don't get the feeling that they're even slightly interested in stopping what they're doing.

And as it relates to stock photos, of course Fiverr is still very much in the business of reselling stock photos in gigs that blatantly acknowledge that the images are sourced from stock agencies. There is even a gig up now that shows part of a search results page. Not sure from which site but it's clearly a stock site. And the gig shows images from various Shutterstock contributors.

So, long story short, Fiverr still sucks, they seem to just be getting worse, and despite widespread social media criticism they make no efforts to change their reputation and are still making money hand over fist at the expense of artists everywhere.

They need to be DDoS-ed.

DepositPhotos / Re: Deposit Photo's - 3% Royalty Confirmed
« on: December 07, 2014, 10:28 »
i'm impressed by this development, i was thinking it couldn't get any worse than istock's 15% but this proves i was wrong !

now, what's next ? what can be lower than 3% ? being paid with coupons for free cheeseburgers ? win a free t-shirt ? unbelievable these guys are still in biz.

Why is this unbelievable?

They earn 97%, and there is no shortage of suppliers.

For me, it's completely expected that they are in the business.  More so, I wouldn't be surprised if business was flourishing for them.

huh say what??? ...medical reference, nuero-science, psychology,...
never thought i stumble into a microstock forum to find so many medical practitioners
actually contributing photographs to microstock  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
you would think they would be spending more time in the reference library of their university studying .
sorry i have to laugh at this.

Neuroscientists and psychologists are not medical practitioners.

And what I do in my free time is only my business. EOD.

How large is your portfolio there? When do you start seeing sales?

There ARE proven differences between the left and right hemispheres, example : speech centers.

Yes, nobody said there aren't. Brains are not symmetrical.
I'm specifically talking about creativity vs logic.

Creativity vs logic? Not proven, but not otherwise proven either. This would be a hard one, how do you even define parameters for creativity and logic? it's not impossible, though, maybe one day we will know, for now, the answer is "we dont know", that does not mean the myth is wrong, maybe or maybe not.
The brain is still a big black box, we barely know about it, and there are things that are proven right today will be proven wrong tomorrow.
Open -minded is the key. Seeing is believing, not the other way around.

Yeah, anyway, I'd veer away from any med school that would try to sell this creativity vs. logic
And for people making strong claims, is it really so hard to do a google search (first result): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralization_of_brain_function

Quote
Broad generalizations are often made in "pop" psychology about one side or the other having characteristic labels, such as "logical" for the left side or "creative" for the right. These labels are not supported by studies on lateralization, as lateralization does not add specialized usage from either hemisphere.[2] Both hemispheres contribute to both kinds of processes,[3] and experimental evidence provides little support for correlating the structural differences between the sides with such broadly-defined functional differences.[4]

So yeah, downvote my original answer as much as you like, but the science has the truth, although you may not like it. To each their own. :)

What I hate most, being a neuro-PhD student, is when people who have skimmed through two articles and maybe heard something on the radio 10 years ago start teaching me what they KNOW. It's funny, and usually they back off when I say what my background is, but when they don't, it's just irritating to talk with these know-it-alls. Like I've spent my entire education looking at a blank wall.

My brother in law, a medical student, is studying brain anatomy where they are taught differences between left and right hemispheres of the cerebrum section of the brain, and their different functions, such as logic vs creativity.

But he, his lectures and all the researchers must be wrong, because Uncle Pete, says its hogwash !! 😉 lol

Lol, I'm doing a PhD in neurobiology, and your brother better transfer to a school where they don't teach this kind of nonsense.

I'm specifically talking about the creativity vs logic thing.

With Pete on this...

Seriously, SS want to maximise profits, what earthly (or unearthly for that matter) reason would they have to cap a contributors daily sales?

Maybe not all of them are capped at the same time, etc.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS change the photo search algorithm?
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:48 »
There was a change, but now it's reverted... at least in some searches.

And I know because I do weekly searches for my niche and Nov was completely random, now it's back to "normal".

Sitting around analyzing your sales is a waste of your time!

this couldn't be further from the truth.

by carefully examining my portfolio i found a niche which is not covered well and thus responsible for a large part of my income. when i identified the niche, i populated it because i planned these shoots and since then my income has soared.

but i guess you can blindly produce random crap also, to each his own. :)

also, there could be an agency-set cap for all you know. you don't know if there is or if there is not, unless you're high up in ss. and you're not.

General Stock Discussion / Re: can i use the same model release
« on: November 26, 2014, 06:42 »
Istock however - will refuse your photo if the model release is dated differently than the exif on your upload!  So need one every time.   (I haven't uploaded there in 2 years, but I imagine it is the same.)

really? never had this issue.
but then again, i strip off all exif data by default

This may be a daft question but, i have several sets of images from various trips to the mountains with my hiking partner, would i be ok to use the same release for each shoot or do i need a different one for each time?

Thanks, Phil
there's a difference between practice and theory

in practice, you can just upload with a single MR

Take buses. I worked right at Buona Vista and never took MRT from there, buses are much better.
It's ok, I'm not there anymore. :D

My friend took a bus from BV to Boon Lay and it took her an hour to reach. With the MRT, 20 minutes.

I lived at Bukit Gombak and the connections were horrible and for me it didn't make sense to use the bus. So I tried to avoid peak hours whenever I could, which was not often, as they have a long-tail distribution instead of a peak :)

Bonjour tous! :D

I recently moved to France, so my French is far from perfect...
I say this because it looks like it is difficult for French people with the administration, so I am worried it will be more difficult for me with my limited french.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with reporting income from stock? Do you do it? If yes, how?

It's not my main job here, so I have no idea how to proceed in regards to this, and I believe people in the centre des impts aren't really good enough in English, like I am not good enough in French to explain this in detail.

Also, if anyone knows - what are the tax rates?

373
I used to wait at that long too for trains during peak time. Lately I know the trick, during super peak time, I took a train one station to the opposite direction, then board to my train. Worked.every.time. But it might only work for certain location though.

Not possible at buona vista... both directions completely full :'(

Shutterstock.com / Re: Very poor sales in Nov!! :(
« on: November 17, 2014, 12:44 »
-10% compared to October

But Oct was BME, so that's nothing strange. I'd say an average month. We'll see.

375
Clementi as an example, not too far from center, 200-300$ meaning 300-400 SGD, shared HDB flat. Many of my students still live there with a scholarship of around 1000 SGD a month and can still save half of it. And as i said, you can rent for as low as, not the average. Go to a food court there, meals are between 3-4 SGD (that's 2-3USD). Of course in the tourist area like Orchard, in the food courts meal are 5-7 SGD, that's 3-4 USD roughly. Well, of course if you dont like Asian food, then dont go there.

I lived there, 8 years, my family of 4 spent about 800 SGD a month on food, and we eat well, eat out most of the time.

Public transport bad? really?  Are you using public transport? I have noticed that for people who love driving any public transport would be bad. I am relying solely on public transport (i hate driving), and i have lived (for years) in many big cities in Europe, US, Asia, and that is the best one I can tell you.
i lived there. my salary was pretty higher than your student's and still i could only rent a room and save not so much every month. i rented around CCK. and it's not just me, all my colleagues paid between 700 and 1100 sgd per month just for one room, with locations ranging from cck, boon lay, to the places MRT doesn't go :D. and even for 700-1100 sgd per month it's not comfortable. to me comfortable means - you have the whole place for yourself.

i didn't like the public transport, especially during peak hours. sometimes had to wait for 6 trains to pass until I could get into one. too crowded. people say crap about the paris metro, but i like it a lot better. there's a train every 3-7 minutes, and they're not as full. not as pretty as singapore, but more pleasant to ride in.

don't get me wrong - i love singapore, it's a great city, very modern and absolutely beautiful architecture. but it's not cheap. it's the opposite of cheap. when did you leave sg?
