Who is behind fotosearch?

---------------------------------------------
Fotosearch owns Canstockphoto.com, but I don't know if they are in turn owned by somebody else, or if they are a truely independent company.

Just to confirm reply #18 below by luissantos84 re: Pond5 / 123RF.  The team at Pond5 is working together with 123RF, but as artists of 123RF, certainly let us know if there are any qualms if any of your content is additionally sold through our site.  As some of you already know, we are working to build out our own photo/images collection by welcoming all artists to upload to our marketplace.  We are currently working on this so we certainly appreciate the patience of those who have been diligently asking questions throughout the past months.

Any other questions/suggestions can be directed to me.  Shoot me a personal message, and I will be happy to take the conversation offline.  Or email them to [email protected] or tweet us @pond5.  Thanks again.

-----------------------------------------------

Thanks for confirming Pond 5.  Hope your new initiative to get images directly is successful.

Are there currently any other Pond5 partner programs?

Don't understand why Veer thinks they can or should low ball contributors.  They are already one of the most difficult sites to upload to and by most accounts produce lackluster results.  This is not going to help them get content.

As an Istock exclusive, they will go to such hosting sites and get such images taken down for you.  When I was an exclusive, I asked them to address images posted on Flickr and they were all promptly taken down.
When you say 'they' and 'them', do you mean iStock?
I've had nothing except an acknowledgement for the pics I notified to CR the week Google Image Search was launched. That's quite a while now - a couple of months?

--------------------------------------------
Sorry, yes I mean Istock.  I think they got crushed the week Google Image Search was launched.  Maybe send it to them again?  Or it could be one more thing at Istock that has broken.

Hospitals in the US typically bill uninsured individuals 4X what they receive from insurance or medicare patients.  Many people never pay.  Others lose their homes.   Half of all bankruptcies in the US are medical care - cost related.

---------------------------------------------
Once you've lost your job, gone bankrupt or otherwise have no money, then you may qualify for Medicaid, which is a government program that pays for certain medical services for certain people.

Some US hospitals are for profit, others are non-profit.  US hospitals are required by law to provide services to anyone who has a health emergency regardless of their ability to pay.  After they treat you, they will try to get you to pay.  If they can't get you to pay, the hospital has to suffer the loss.  So people with health insurance have to pay enough when they go to a hospital to fund the hospitals continuing operation.  If not, the hospital will close since it can't pay its bills.

So ultimately U.S. citizens already pay for the health care through higher insurance premiums to pay for those who don't have insurance or through the taxes that fund Medicaid.  So really the big difference between Europe and the US providing health care to the very sick is that the US system requires that the uninsured be driven into bankruptcy first or become so sick that the hospital can't turn them away.

Adobe Stock / Re: How does ranking affects placement of photos?

So anyway I've made a bit of a 'research' project of this recently and I've come to the conclusion that there are a few pretty smart FT contributors out there. Whilst most including myself whine about newly accepted images never being seen and, of course, not selling, there are others whom I suspect have applied the system to their own, considerable, advantage. How otherwise can one explain a perfectly good food shot being viewed 250+ times and downloaded 12 times within a couple of days of its acceptance. Similar sort of thing happened with the same photographer's non-food shot one week later. IMO there are only a couple of ways of achieving this: either there are loads of customers out there hanging on your every upload and waiting to pounce or.................you do a bit of self-promotion (tax deductible) and buy a sub for a month (or get someone to do it for you). Remember, the object of the exercise is to get to page 1 in the search on the basis of relevance, popularity and downloads as fast as possible. With your sub contract for $200 you may download as many as 750 images in a month. Start downloading certain selected images of your own............and earn back your sub at 29 cents per sale (silver rank). Probably means working weekends (60 downloads) if you want to make a profit but that's not really the idea. Feel a bit queasy about embarking on this enterprise? Get someone else (or a company) to buy a sub with unlimited users......costs a little more but enables you or your proxy to mail everyone you know to go buy a designated file with attached subs code.

Don't get greedy, don't download all your 750 image entitlement thus leaving a fair bit of subs profit on the table for FT and I don't see anyone objecting! All purely hypothetical, mind you........I'm not doing it. Don't upload enough per month to make it worthwhile but there may be others for which this would work.

I don't see gaming the system as "smart".  I see it as dishonest.  Not to mention very, very risky.  People have had accounts closed for similar types of behaviors.

----------------------------------------------------
Not to mention, it screws all the other contributors.

If you have the data, I suggest you report it to FT rather than to emulate it.  (not to mention that you might have just flagged your FT portfolio for extra close attention  ;D

There was a huge scandle years ago on Istock where people were doing this and they were banned.  Would not be surprised if at the time istock shared the names/info about those scamming contributors with the other micros.  I know they share info about people who submit stolen images as their own.

Here in the USA the ever increasing programs to protect its members are creating a growing society of people who spend their lives on various welfare programs. And it has become expected that if you are unable, or more commonly are unwilling, to help yourself that there's a government program for you.

Exactly.  Thus the current backlash against all the "entitlement" programs.  (I'm "entitled" to this, and "entitled" to that, so give it to me free)

Apparently 123rf list should be extended with

http://stockphoto.feebdesign.com
http://hemistock.com

Thanks!

Very timely post as I was able to figure out that 123RF content was also included on another unknown site that I reviewed at the same time.

Updated the master list.

In the process of trying to verify feebdesign.com and hemistock.com as being from 123RF, I found that the page layout, watermark (of feeb and hemi), and content is nearly identical to ooopic.com.

Here is one example:
http://www.123rf.com/photo_7570160_english-bulldog-puppy-standing-wearing-bee-costume-with-reflection-on-white-background.html
http://rf.ooopic.com/tupian/9207544.html
http://hemistock.com/stockphoto/photo/7570160.html
http://stockphoto.feebdesign.com/main/image_detail.php?imageid=7570160

Interestingly ooopic has renumbered the images.

I came across another one.

This website:

has all of my files for sale, and they are coming from Featurepics.

Never heard anything about that before.

Thanks! I've updated the list to reflect this.

Thanks for posting this.

I can't figure it out where the content comes from, or even quite how the site works.  I have trouble navigating through the site, but I could not find any of my images.

Can you post links to some images you recognize from elsewhere?  This should help figure out who they are getting their content from.

While (northern) summers are always slower than the spring/fall, our August sales have been right on track. If you've had a significant decrease, then I'd attribute it to the luck of the draw - and more than likely you'll see see it bounce back again with time.

Cheers,
Duncan

Sadstock: Here's a site that seems to be affiliated with Shutterstock, but couldn't find it on your list:

http://www.freepik.com/

When I search, I see my images come up in the Shutterstock results and link properly goes to Shutterstock.

But, then there's that free section below and clicking on a few there's no copyrights on the images. Someone had to create these images!

---------------------------------
A search at Freepik.com turned up sponsored results for Shutterstock as you noted and if you click on an image, it takes you directly to SS.  If you click on the free download link, you end up at Stock.xchng.com where you can download the content and there are links to similar images at Istock.  Basically the free images are a way to draw in people looking for stock images and upsell them.  My understanding based on this thread http://www.microstockgroup.com/stockxpert-com/if-sxc-hu-were-to-close/ is that Stock.xchng was part of StockXpert and is now part of Getty, which is why the similar images takes you to Istock.  A search in Stock.xchng turned up my images for sale at Istock.  So Ill add Stock.xchng to the list of Istock partners.  Im not going to add this to SS as since it is a sponsored placement and next week the sponsor could be DT or FT

My questions is what if there are viruses within us that do something useful?  Don't know what that would be, but we have helpful bacteria, so...

Honestly this sounds like the start of a post-apocalyptic movie where scientists only had the best intentions and a few hearty souls end-up barricaded in a shopping mall.

Software - General / Re: Lightroom after Photoshop - not before
« on: August 11, 2011, 16:05 »
Regardless of the how-to issues, I think if you believe you have to go back to lightroom for something it would indicate you need to learn more about how to use Photoshop. I can't think of any reason to go back that way - I have both and am not dissing Lightroom at all, but its editing functions are a subset of Photoshop's.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you think you want to go back to Lightroom for?

----------------------------

I don't think using Lightroom after Photoshop reveals a workflow issue.  I manage/catalogue all my images in Lightroom, so once I edit in Photoshop, the tiff goes back into Lightroom.  When I'm ready to upload, I export as a jpg from Lightroom.

Sometimes after its been to Lightroom and back, I find something I want to fix, say a distant bird in the background that Istock will claim is a hot/dead pixel, and I'll fix it in Lightroom.

As I'm uploading some of my old istock images, I'm reprocessing some of them and I can lay my hands on all my old raw/tiff/jpgs through Lightroom in a just few seconds.  I'm sure there are other ways to manage a catalogue, but this workflow has been a huge time saver for me.

Click,

Either you used the wrong form, or you were given incorrect information by the copyright office.

According to circular 40 - http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ40.pdf

"Group Registration of Published Photographs
A single registration can be made for a group of published
photographs if all the following conditions are met.
The same photographer took all the photographs (if an
employer for hire is named as author, only one photographers
work can be included).
All the photographs were first published in the same calendar
year.

All the photographs have the same copyright claimant(s).

To register groups of published photographs, you can
use Form GR/PPh/CON, available on the Copyright Office
website under Forms. You can complete the form on your
personal computer and print it out or print out a blank copy
and complete it using black ink. Mail the completed form to
the Copyright Office with the appropriate fee and deposit."

Did you use Form GR/PPh/CON?  If not, then that may be your problem.  If so, you could reply to the email with the reference to circular 40 and ask for clarification.

My understanding is that the 1 day restriction applies to a "collection" of images like those used to create a calendar not a "group" which is spelled out above.

Off Topic / Re: Why are you anonymous?
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:29 »
Generally I stay anonymous to avoid retaliation from agencies.  I would never have posted the list of partner sites if the agencies knew who I was as there is no telling how they would have responded.  http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-discussion/a-list-of-partner-programs/

Also there is a trend for some here and in the IS forums to judge the value of a comment by the size and content of the commenters portfolio, rather than the comment itself.  Sure depending on the topic, portfolio might provide useful insight, but in the balance I think it provides very little of value and it frequently side-tracks an otherwise useful thread.

The downside is no referrals.  When I went independent, I used referral links found here from posters who shared useful info as a way to give back to them.
