iStockPhoto.com / Re: CONGRATULATION iSTOCK !!!
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:55 »
iStock can totally take advantage of this and bump their exclusive commissions by 5% or something which would likely be the final nail in the coffin for many SS submitters.

That's like iStock saying "Hey Submitters! We appreciate our photographers! You are welcome to join us." where as Shutterstock basically just said "fuck you".

It will be fun to see what happens with this:

3,657,487 royalty-free stock photos
48,297 new stock photos added this week
101,338 photographers

General Stock Discussion / Re: How many more LuckyOlivers?

Consolidation in this industry is good for submitters and buyers, so the more sites that close their doors the better off we are. More buyers and sellers at a few established sites means less time wasted uploading to 10 different sites.

I too got a $5 sale today. I have had a couple $7.50 ones already though.

Am I the only one who thinks they are holding out to see how badly istock's new subscription plan hits them?

That is the only reason I can see for dragging their feet like this....

I think the same.

If that were the case then we will be waiting a lot longer than the 2nd week of May. So unless they want to piss off all their contributors with a delay then I think that has pretty much no chance of happening.

356
So how many people are holding off on their uploads until the raise is announced? I hope their reviewers are ready for this :-)

I'm not. I just upload whenever I get about 30 new files saved on the computer. That way I can review, keyword, have an upload party and get it all done at once.

I suppose you are right, that some people are holding photos for after the increase. If buyers already have credits, the pictures will still sell at the old rate, so there's no advantage in waiting in that case.

So here I am keeping the thread alive with nothing new to add.  ;D

No, I'm pretty sure that all of the downloads will be whatever the increased rate is. None of that old/new rate stuff. At least that was the case last year.

172/188 Not bad, but the earnings are hardly worth the while.

General - Top Sites / Re: The Big 6 from a new user's POV

Just stick with the big 6, the others are not really worth your while. I always say that Shutterstock is the best one to get started on because you see instant returns the day after your images are approved. All of the other sites may take some time to get your first download.

The ETA at Dreamstime used to be somewhat accurate but lately it just jumps all over.

Do you get a message if one of your images is used?

SnapVillage.com / Re: How are you pricing your images at SV
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:01 »
I have mine ranging from 5-50....
Made a sale on a 25 a couple of days ago and that gave me 7.50
I pretty much base the price on how much I like the image....

That is what I have done as well.

^ Hmm interesting. DT is one of the sites that has not dropped for me after not uploading for a couple months. In face, last month was my BME at DT and I have not uploaded but a couple files there the past 3 months.

Have you noticed that, when going into the SV website, the login link is the very last item that appears on the page? A very small detail, but still soooooo annoying   :P

Yes, that is very annoying. It takes a good couple seconds for their stupid login window to load and show up for me too. Easily the worst microstock site I submit to in terms of usability.

As far as uploading.. I sent in a CD. Not going to even bother with their uploader until they at least have FTP.

Interesting calculator.

The most a diamond can earn from a single XS download is $105.50.
The most a non-exclusive can earn from a single XS download is $91.20.

You have to really hit the jackpot for that though. Still something to hope for. Overall I am thinking this might actually get us more money than the current pay-per download set up.

I think (and hope) that this will be enough to put an end to a lot of the smaller Microstock sites that are only alive because of their subscription plans. I would much rather have a higher concentration of buyers at the big 6 sites instead of spread out over 40+ microstock sites. So it's time for Crestock, Canstockphoto, Albuno to start shutting down or make some changes.

365
If you purchase the rights to the image, does that mean you then own the copyright? Meaning you could submit it as your own photo to the stock sites.

I have only had 1 sale on Featurepics. $8.40 commission from it. Just wish they were a little more frequent.

If they're closed every weekend and you only upload on your schedule (weekends) you haven't uploaded to BigStock in a long time.

Well I said that in my post. So I was confused why Miz would say it again, if that is indeed what he meant.

I upload on my schedule not theirs.

Apparently not in months

Huh?

Every time I decide to do upload they have it disabled. I have not uploaded anything new to Bigstock in months. I upload on my schedule not theirs.

372
Publicity stunt for both of them. Win-win I suppose.

373
Free publicity for Crestock. Assuming they don't get fined.

374
But they never offered them through the Shutterstock website, did they?  Wasn't it always through another URL (that didn't get any traffic or advertising!).  They need to offer it on their own website to keep buyers from drifting away in between subscriptions/peak seasons.

On the topic announcing the closure of their per-photo sale site I told them they should just merge it with Shutterstock and it would be a hell of a lot more successful. But they shrugged it off. Lost potential right there.  :-\

No. I don't see any real reason to waste time and space on my computer to do that.
