I'm not a huge fan of Fotolia's tactics, but I don't see what the big freak out is all about. Isn't this the same deal that Shutterstock and Dreamstime have?

I didn't mean to be insulting either and I definitely appreciate the time you take to answer our questions. As far as the mystery, I think Phil covered that. I was really hoping to see the program in action. Check it all out with my own eyes and maybe even order a card.

Yeah, I just opted mine out as well. That does seem like a pretty low royalty and all the mystery around the program doesn't really help either. I'll wait until we get all the details and then make a decision instead of the other way around.

I'm afraid tat you have missed these questions in this forum too. I can help you. The questions from Phil are just above your post.
I'm glad someone else thought this was funny too. It is great that they come here to answer questions though.

So, how do we find it on MySpace? I couldn't find it either. Also, how are the earnings reported in our statistics?

I got one of those today too for $6.70. Very nice little bonus. Hope they accelerate
It's good to see that that the royalties are more than a few pennies. Does anybody know how to track these earnings in our stats?

I think I got one of these partner sales. I received this email this morning: We're pleased to let you know that one or more of your files was sold via offline means. The content was used on one of the partner sites announced in the consumer-oriented alliance: http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_11224 Image ID: 2295049 Royalties: $1.09

I didn't mean to start an argument and then just wander away... or did I? Anyway, I think Whatalife covered it. The vector rules seem fairly strict on hand-lettered text, and the raster rules seem pretty lax by comparison. What I took away from my rejection was that if you put any hand-lettered text in your vector illustrations, you run the risk of rejection. That may not be their official policy, but I just try to avoid text now (for iStock anyway). Should I bring up cartoons of historical figures, next? I'm just kidding. I love you, iStock!

What about the font rules? You can use fonts in rasters and 3D renders. Right? So is it the fact that vectors should not contain fonts? That makes senses surely because it would basically be like re distributing the font. Is that what you means?
I've had hand drawn text (with a reference sketch attached) rejected that was in a design. It seems bizarre that someone can submit a 3D file that just says 2009, but I can't scribble Xmas on a pattern with Santa, a snowman and half a dozen other elements. I don't want to highjack the thread, so that is all I'm going to say about it.

cthoman, he is not referring to a vector preview thumbnail. He is referring to a vector illustration that was converted to jpg and uploaded through the photo queue.
Oh, don't they reject anything that could be created as a vector file submitted as a raster? I thought they wanted their raster collection to be unique from the vector collection.

I also wanted to say if you were ranting about istock's font rules, I'd be with you, but the banding thing... not so much.
3562
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:59 »
So what is the rule on banding? I've never gotten a banding rejection, but I assume many raster thumbnails have a little banding in them.

This happened to me as well several years ago on a couch I bought. From the pamphlet that came with the bill, it sounded like they want their share of any product that you didn't pay taxes on that resides in Florida. Or even the difference if the sales taxes you paid was less than their sales tax rate. I assume they only crackdown on large ticket items.

It doesn't really look like a logo, but Geo is right. They are redistributing your artwork which is a big no-no. I might try contacting the person directly. Most times people don't realize what they're doing is wrong. Sometimes they do or they may not have even bought the file. Good Luck!
Also, I recognized the other illustration on the page as well. I'll have to find a link.

...because i cant charge him hundreds of dollars as i would do in my bussines.
Another thing is, how you recieve the payment, via paypal for example?, is this made apart from the micro site? etc.
Please some experienced in this field enlight me because im a little lost here.
Thank you
I don't think there is anything wrong with charging hundreds of dollars depending on the changes. If it is something really simple, I might not charge. I saved an eps file (yes, I made them send me the purchased file) as an svg for someone for free once, although if they came back the next day to do it again, I'd charge them. Personally, I really don't like to do anything for less than $50. Even if it takes me less than half an hour, I think I should make at least 50 bucks. I agree with the others about getting money upfront. I usually use Paypal invoices for that.

I'm going with none of the above as well. I personally think the outlook is mostly positive. I guess people forget some of the raises in prices and/or royalties that have happened in the last couple years at a number of agencies. It would be interesting to see a comparison between cost increases and decreases to see if prices/royalties have gone up overall or down. My guess would be that they have gone up. Cheer up. I don't think the end is near.

Hi cthoman -
There is no opt-out for extended licenses. All files will be available for buyers who need extended license options.
Once we roll out the full buyer-side Marketplace release later this summer, there will be on page options for buyers to select one or more extended license options. Currently this must be done via Veer customer service.
- Brian
That's a shame. The no opt out was part of the reason I removed my images at Snap Village. I guess that means no Veer for me. Thanks for answering my question though.

I had a question about the extended licenses. I didn't see any options for it in the upload process. I also didn't see them available when you try to purchase a file. I just wanted to know if there was an opt in/opt out for that?

I do have a right to ask questions if you see it as complaing then that is your problem. a complaint would be me saying why in the past 2 weeks has DT taken back sales due to credit card fraud? Another thing unique to DT....see! that's what's called complaing
Credit card fraud isn't unique to DT. I had fraud happen to me at iStock as well.

I've used both elance and guru. You can find good paying clients on both, but you will have to wade through a lot of garbage. I'm amazed at the insanely low budgets posted for some of the projects. I always wonder if they get completed for those prices.
You can also try craigslist. It is pretty unorganized and hard to find things, but there are a lot of postings. Also, I'd say build a good portfolio site and get links to it from as many places as possible. Especially from the stock art sites. People contact me all the time for custom work from them.
Finally, you could try putting together a mailing campaign with a promotional postcard and collecting or buying a list of art directors. I've never had much luck with my mailing campaigns, but it's worth a shot.
Hope that helps. Freelancing isn't an easy thing.

That sounds pretty sweet. The talk of royalty reduction in the future scares me a little bit though.

I think they just gave you a generic reason for rejection. I read the critiques you got on istock and I thought those were pretty accurate. I agree that some of the anatomy seems a little off. Especially where the head and neck meet the chest. I'd redraw it and resubmit.
You have some nice illustrations in your portfolio, so I think the reviewers hold you to those standards of work that you have establish with your portfolio.

Earnings go up and down every month, so it gets hard to see if your average is increasing sometimes.
As far as the difference between selling images for 25 cents versus 5 to 10 bucks, I can look at my monthly results and say there isn't much difference. I sell images at Shutterstock for 36 cents a piece and images at iStock for $5 and up. At the end of the month, I earn about the same amount at both agencies.
Yeah, getting a few cents per image seems pathetic, but I don't look at it as individual sales. Instead, I view my monthly earnings as what people pay to have access to my catalog of images.
