Good argument!
![]() I knew this one had the potential to get bloody, but I decided to participate anyway. That's what I like about MSG, the carnage... oops I mean the calm discussions. I can't say I know enough about the inner workings of any of the agencies to know where the majority of their money goes (ie. contributors, advertising, etc.) You could be right that some guy that looks like the monopoly guy could be walking away with all of our money. In the end, I will probably give Veer a shot to see if it works for me. I'll have to read all the terms first, though. 3578
Veer / Re: Veer marketplace and %35 commission for contributors!« on: May 07, 2009, 10:40 »
This seems like a standard royalty. I can't quote what every different site gives, but this is more than iStock nonexclusive. I think it really depends on what the price is and how many downloads you get.
It would be nice to get 50%, but realistically Veer is taking most of the risk. They have to hire employees, advertise, image storage, etc. All I have to do is upload a few test images to see if I like it. 3579
Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Lack of Trust« on: May 06, 2009, 15:28 »
While I don't think Fotolia is cooking the books, I definitely don't have a lot of trust in them. The vector price slashing really killed all the trust. I haven't uploaded a file since.
So, say what you want and vent on! 3580

Bigstock.com / Re: New Upload Limits at BigStockPhoto« on: May 06, 2009, 15:00 »I asked customer support do delete couple hundred files from my queue (at first a did not have IPTC data) and then I learned that it will affect my acceptance ratio. So now I am *removed coarse language* up cause this will never expire and I have to get same amount images approved to even reach 50%. And here I thought this was just to punish me. I deleted over 100 images a while back because they didn't sell vectors when I originally uploaded, then they did. I also recently tried to get them to replace some of my original thumbnails because their first thumbnail generation for vectors was garbage. After a few back and forth emails, they said that they couldn't replace the thumbnails and recommended I delete the files and reupload them. I guess it's good I just left them because that would have really dug a hole for me. ![]() 3582

I'm not sure if spending most of first quarter giving the shaft to contributors by lowering vector prices and royalty percentages is going to entice a lot of exclusives. 3583

Yeah, I'd let someone know. It's always a good idea for the community to police itself too. I've gotten a heads up about one of my images being resold and was grateful.

It looks good. The only thing that I can see is that the tongue doesn't really attach to anything and is kind of floating in the mouth. Also, some of your shapes look a little rough. It could be that some of your shadow shapes don't line up right or overlap other edges. The reviewer might have seen something when zoomed in at 800%.
Overall, I think it's a great looking illustration, but it's hard to tell about the execution without digging into the file real close. 3586
Newbie Discussion / Re: do vectors make more money than photographs?« on: April 24, 2009, 11:58 »
I don't know if I'm a master, but here's my take.
I don't know if you can put a time on it. Some people will pick it up quickly and some will never get it. It really depends on your skill level. I'd been drawing my whole life, went to art school and got a BFA, had been freelancing full time and had a whole portfolio of Illustrator files when I discovered microstock. I got accepted to IS on the first try and was instantly addicted. Now, my photography on the other hand looks like a drunken monkey took the shots. 3587

Veer / Re: Preference for how vectors are priced?« on: April 22, 2009, 12:00 »
I agree IS has a nice system, although when I started there a lot of vectors sold for 1 credit which was frustrating when your image got priced that low. They did a good job of handling the subscription royalties as well.

Veer / Re: Preference for how vectors are priced?« on: April 17, 2009, 19:25 »
I'm not sure it really matters as long as the site makes money for the artists and contributors don't feel like they are being shortchanged.

Sounds like "spec work" or speculative work which in the illustration biz is an evil term.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia, new prices, the math.« on: April 08, 2009, 11:47 »
I did better with the new pricing and royalties At Fotolia, but I sold a lot of vectors. Unfortunately, Fotolia implemented new lower vector pricing too, so I'm not sure how long "doing better" will last.
If I take out all the vector sales, I still made a little bit more with the new pricing. S and XS were the bulk of my raster downloads, but they didn't earn as much as my M and above downloads. In the end, the changes didn't make a huge difference for me, but I can definitely see why people are pissed. 3594
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 28, 2009, 11:14 »
This was from Mat on the Fotolia forums answering someone's questions:
For your first question..."1- Since you are now accepting EPS vectors, is it ok for us to upload EPS versions of previously uploaded JPEG's or SVG's?" The answer is Yes it is OK to do so. What they want you to do is put a note to the editor when you submit it with the number of of the jpeg you are replacing. Once you have Uploaded your series of replacements with the note then email customer support with a list of the images you have uploaded and the corresponding image number being replaced. Question number 2..."- And another question for future submissions.. With the new vectors, you are not offering jpeg version of EPS files.. So is it ok to also submit jpeg versions of EPS files to take advantage of maximum sales potential?" This is a question that does not have an answer yet. It's being discussed and as soon as there is an official answer they will let you know." From what I've read it sounds like, as of now, they will delete an additional jpeg submission as a duplicate file. But, I guess they are discussing it. I'm still looking for the answer about repricing old vectors and when they plan on doing it. Hopefully, they won't do it for a while or not at all. 3595
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 26, 2009, 13:28 »
I thought this was interesting. Someone posted a response they got back from Fotolia about the vector changes:
"Thank you for your e-mail. As we mentioned on the previous e-mail, Jpeg files and illustrations that comes with the Vector file format are only for Thumbnails. Unfortunatelly the Vector file is no longer available in Jpeg format to submit it as Xs, X, M, L, XL, X licenses anymore." I'm not really sure why they would do this. 3596
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 25, 2009, 10:37 »
I got their newsletter too. Not that I'm planning on uploading anything at their new crap-tacular prices, but I thought it was strange that they wanted Illustrator 10 files and not 8 like everyone else.
Did I miss the day in science class where they explained that the world revolved around Fotolia? 3597
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 22, 2009, 11:13 »
I did a search on Fotolia and it looks like most of the new vectors (ones available in just V or XV) were priced at 4 credits. A few were 6 credits and I didn't see any at 8 credits. If new vectors are going to be priced at half the price of the old ones, I don't really see much point in uploading any new vectors there.
It didn't look like any of the old ones had been repriced. They are all still 8 credits. If they plan on halving the price on my old files, I will have to seriously consider pulling all my vectors and just selling my old raster files. Fotolia what? 3598
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 20, 2009, 12:02 »
So what does a 4 credit vector look like? I was a little curious about what the tiers were. Also, are they planning on changing the prices for old files or just new files uploaded?
I asked this on their forums, so maybe I'll get an answer there. I'm not going to hold my breath though. 3599
Adobe Stock / Re: Changes on vectors? (prices and formats)« on: March 19, 2009, 09:33 »
When you edit your files, the price automatically is set at 8 for vectors. Does that mean they are going to add in an optional range or just screw us over and lower the price on some of our files?

General Stock Discussion / Re: how many sites do you feel is practical« on: March 17, 2009, 09:22 »
I belong to about 8 sites total, and contribute regularly to 5. My top 3 sites get the most immediate attention, then the next two get images here and there.
Everyone else doesn't really get much uploading. I tried uploading more to them, but didn't really see much of an increase in money. I'm curious. Do you really make money from all 15? |
