Bigstock.com / Re: BigStock Selling HD Videos for $0.15 !!
« on: November 13, 2014, 13:36 »
i am sure this is SS's idea. But this doesn't mean it will be automatically transferred to SS.

My video income is 90% pond5 and SS. So having to drop SS, or downgrading them to a place "for testshots only" would be really sad.

Mostly I worry about  agencies taking in content under one business model, then abruptly changing that business model without giving us an opt out, the way fotolia did with DPC.

if this new subscription offer was a new standalone agency and they invited contributors to upload content...

who would send them files for this?

I think they would have a very hard time attracting normal content.

This is very worrying news indeed. On fotolia at least the subs download was limited to web size files.

There is no market saturation in video, the whole market is just starting out.

if they really want to offer lower price files, then they could offer different price points and allow the contributor to opt in voluntarily with individual files. testshots or outtakes.

But to opt in all files is very strange. they know that the contributors did not upload their content for this price model.

I was just talking about Bigstock with a friend yesterday, wondering if uploading videos to Bigstock was a good idea.

But I suppose this means we have to stay away.

i sincerly hope SS will not copy this model. i really like working with SS.

so this looks like really bad news.

So Sean solved the original question. Thank you! 😀

3579
Whow, what a bad introduction by a site owner. Jo Ann just summarised all the logical questions people will have.

Who will want to work with a place that has such an emotional manager?

There are many start ups to choose from, why should the suppliers back you??

3580
Mostly Sony, sometimes iphone, or ricoh gr

Just because you can vote a country is not a democracy. in East Germany everyone had to vote, but any real opposition was thrown in jail, harrassed, killed, had their children taken away etc...

Iran is not a democracy with choices the way we know it in the West.

So I don't know what happened here, but you cannot dismiss the op outright.

And the Economics sanctions obviously hurt all kinds of innocent civilians.

3582
the numbers look very realistic to me. I think for most people trying to get in now the biggest problem is the long waiting time to see results. if you have no previous experience with Stock production, even if you are a pro assignemnt shooter or wedding or portrait photographer, I would definetly recommend to keep your day job until you have reached an income that is at least half your running costs,  or until you have a reliable 1000 Dollars a month.

I have seen many talented people fail because the shoot upload repeat life just isn't for them.

of course you need to try it before you can decide.

3583
This really is a fantastic website and app. Thank you for the tip.

I see no oversupply in video. Pond5 has 3 million files and the largest library at the moment. Only 480 000 files have a model release, 90 000 in total for 4k video.

Of course video is a much smaller buyer market, more specialized than photos.

I sincerly hope istock changes their approach in video, I just started uploading again before they changed their system, but with the 3-7 dollar sales, Ive decided to take a break and will wait it out to see what happens. My portfolio there is much smaller than anywhere else, because they had a codec problem, so I wasnt uploading for nearly a year. So for now I wont deactivate anything.

Some time next year they will bring in new managers with new brilliant plans and change everything again. The current situation will not last, they already have a lot less choice in video compared to pond5 and Shutterstock. Whoever invests properly in video production cannot upload to istock at the moment, there is no sensible return on investment. Or maybe people will send the outtakes there, for 3-7 dollars it just makes no sense otherwise.

But at least they seem to be taking good care of their exclusives, I read they get 50 dollars or more on average. Perhaps they should change their system and make it exclusive content only.

General Stock Discussion / Re: October Earnings
« on: November 02, 2014, 16:29 »
October was down by about 20% compared to September because September had a super record month on SS and this month was back to normal. But Fotolia and pond5 saw a nice increase, istock was a little more but nothing drastic considering that this is supposed to be the best month of the year and nothing special otherwise.

But I am quite pleased with the results, especially because the files that I think will do well on an agency also sell pretty fast, so I am getting better at streamlining my workflow.

3586
Please give us an opt out from inmagine and otherwise make it clear in your royalty structure that commission received is much lower if it comes from inmagine.

You are treating inmagine as a partner royaltywise, so opting out of partner deals should automatically remove all files from inmagine.

If it doesnt, we need an additional opt out.

I am so tired of all these sneaky back door deals. Do the agencies really believe we will never find out?

3587
Shutterstock and pond5 have been free of the back door deals so far. dreamstime has a good reputation as well.

Thank you Robert for letting us know.

3588
And just yesterday i asked for my password again, to start submitting after a long break. Perhaps not...

Stock Performer / Re: Is Stock Performer 100% safe ?
« on: October 23, 2014, 11:59 »
The password is stored on your own computer, not their site. If you are not online and connected to sp, they cannot log into any of your sites.

I have used sp from the beginning and totally trust Luis and Oliver, also because I know them personally.

But even if you dont know them, Germany has one of the strictest privacy laws around.

I use sp every day, I wouldnt know what to do without them.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model Release or not
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:45 »
The very distinct eye protection with flames makes him recognizable. If someone can recognize himself, i would always get a model release.

You might need a property release too, this is an indoor location.

Computer Hardware / Re: 5K display
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:02 »
people are buying a lot of high quality 4k Tvs. Now they can buy a computer with 5k for not much more. I think as a home entertainment and computer system this is a great alternative.

Wouldnt mind a 32 inch screen, but I think its a great offer and Ill certainly get one as soon as my budget lets me.

Stocksy / Re: Microstock photographers and Stocksy application
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:16 »
I was just referring to the stocksy origin as described by Thomas Hawk in his famous letter to Getty.

http://thomashawk.com/2013/03/why-i-quit-getty-images-and-why-im-moving-my-stock-photography-sales-to-stocksy.html

stocksy as a place run by artist to represent themselves and be free of the people that try to take advantage of you.

With 50% and 100% on extended licenses and being a coop, it is unique.

Of course they have great editors and they encourage you to do your best.

The content they have is very desired by others, so I do believe they can help to bring balance.

3595
Stocksy / Re: Microstock photographers and Stocksy application
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:19 »
Well for me that is one of the biggest reasons to support an artist run coop. To show the stock world, that the modern artists are entrepreneurs who can take matters into their own hand if necessary.

I have often heard that "artists cant do business", they dont understand money and thus it is very easy to exploit them.

Of course some people really are not that good with business and need a "manager" who can handle the business side for them. And that of course needs to be paid.

But I think the online stock community in particular, is different. Many have online businesses or business experience anyway, they are not scared of money or working with customers.

So for stocksy to be an example of a successfully run and expanding business community as well as an art community is something I really appreciate.

It can really bring a lot of balance to the industry and of course the more artists can find a home there, the more powerful it will be.

But I understand that accepting artists must go hand in hand with growth, you have to be able to feed them if you take them in.

Stocksy / Re: Microstock photographers and Stocksy application
« on: October 15, 2014, 06:47 »
I am very sorry for those who didnt get in and all those that are still waiting. I sincerly hope that stocksy grows their business by 10 000% so they can include many more artists. There are so many talented people in the community.

And the more artists join stocksy, the more the other agencies will have to treat people well, otherwise all the best work will "go stocksy".

Cameras / Lenses / Re: LG G2 good for microstock ?
« on: October 14, 2014, 08:58 »
I have had images form my iphone 5c accepted. sometimes I downsize a little to 6mp. Depending on your MP,might be worth trying that as well, to avoid artifact rejections.

istock certainly takes images done with smartphones, so do other places.

You can also try the various mobile apps, SS just brought one out where you can upload directly from your smartphone.

Canon / Re: G1X Mark II for shooting stock
« on: October 14, 2014, 04:02 »
But dont you enjoy photography? Do you take pictures of family and friends and travel?

I would just buy the camera you would want to use for daily life or your own projects anyway and then test stock.

Like someone here said, just because there are pizza restaurants everyhwere, it doesnt mean yours cant be successful.

The subjects you mention have been done to death, but as a graphic designer, maybe you can come up with trends that are missing. usually graphic designers do well, at least among my friends, because they know what the clients need.

Making the money you invest back, wont be easy. But if you already have portfolios and people come to check you out, I would at least try it and then see what happens.

Canon / Re: G1X Mark II for shooting stock
« on: October 14, 2014, 02:05 »
Any of the big companies, canon, nikon, sony, ricoh...all have dslrs that work easily for stock.

Personally I like the sony nex series, mirrorless small cameras and with an adapter you can use any lens.

But a simple introductory cam from canon and nikon will work well. you can also buy last years model, it will be more than enough. In addition  to the kit lens I would buy a 50mm 1,4 or 1,8 lens. For portraits, but also as a good walk around camera. Or a good quality 35 f2.

Any money left, Id invest that in good light, a flash with a 360 degree rotating top, reflectors. You can buy it all used to save money and then upgrade your system with your stock earnings.

Canon / Re: G1X Mark II for shooting stock
« on: October 13, 2014, 01:16 »
Well, please let us know how the g1x m2 does when you work with agencies. i am sure many people are interested, if only as a second camera.

I love my ricoh gr as a small camera and also have the current sonyrx100 m3.

but the canon looks interesting.

Like others have said a dslr is much cheaper and will give you more options if you want to take stock seriously.

Alternative: shoot with your iPhone. I have had many normal images accepted that were done with my phone. And not just for mobile stock. You need very good light, but for outdoors and travel it is certainly possible.
