General Stock Discussion / Re: 3 HDR questions...
« on: May 25, 2008, 13:52 »
I presume that one way to minimize noise and artifacts in HDRs would be using a camera with a wide EV range in autobracketing. The EOS 1D III and 1DS III  have 18EV, most other Canons have only 4 EV.  :-[ Nikon and Pentax prosumer models have 8EV.

Wide EV range would be very helpful in night photography where 4EV is usually not enough to expose correctly all parts of the image.

If you use Photomatix, switching the mode from Detail Enhancer to Tone Compressor will also reduce greatly noise and artifacts, but you may not always be happy with the result.

One more thing: it might be good to diversify your initial submission, a couple of portraits, architecture, nature, still life, etc. Some folks say it helps.

378
I won't help you with portrait shots, but as far as those architectural photos are concerned, my guess is that a lot of them would be rejected by SS because of "poor lighting setup, bla, bla, shadows or incorrect white balance". On my first attempt because of that they rejected 5 pics,  which had been accepted by IS. I addressed this issue and on my second attempt 9 were accepted.
My advice is: go out on a nice sunny day, shoot some simple but technically perfect pics, avoid shadows, then in post-processing increase saturation a bit (they seem to like juicy colors), get rid of all noise, downsample to a little more than 4 MP, and that should do it. At least that did it for me. What camera do you use?

Yeah, the name surely does sound a bit eccentric, but after all what does "google" mean? Once a company is successful, people get used to most unusual names.

One thing is certain, these guys know how to build a slick and superfast website, with probably the best upload process in the industry. We will see if it remains so smooth as the database grows.

What's more they pay in a real-world currency and the royalty structure is very decent.
Usually I don't contribute to low performing sites or startups, but I decided to give YAY a chance. Let's hope they will be successful in reaching buyers.

Go to "status of submitted photos"-> approved photos-> select the batch you want to edit and click on the pencil.

You may try the free Adobe DNG Converter:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3894

The DNG format is supported by CS2.
Lightroom can also convert RAWs to DNG.

Well, if it does launch, but can't send/receive, I would examine the settings in the security software that you are using (firewall, AV, etc). The router may have its firewall, too.
In this case, I think Outlook is just being blocked from accessing the net, maybe the necessary port is blocked. Try to switch off all security software for a moment and attempt to send/receive then.

Updating the router's firmware might also be worth a try.

Are you using a firewall (software or does the router have a firewall built in)?

What do you mean by "can't get into Outlook 2002"? Is there any error message? (that would be helpful)
Do you mean the Outlook application won't launch if the PC is connected to the router or it just doesn't send/receive?

Sometimes re-installing the software solves many strange problems. I am not sure it will help in this case, but you may give it a try (with the computer connected to the router).

1. The processor is pretty good, I read that LR actually makes use of quad cores, CS4 probably will do to. Maybe CS4 will come also in a 64-bit version, so you might consider a 64-bit operating system.

2. Consider a fast HDD for your OS and software, for example WD Raptor 10000 RPM. I have one and it is really fast, but also loud and pricey (155 EUR for 150 GB).
You might also add a smaller Raptor as a scratch disk.

3. DVD-drive: check if it is "Super-Multi-Format" burner, if yes you will be able to use DVD-RAM discs, they are pretty cool.

4. Vista: oh, man, yesterday I had to reinstall my Vista Ultimate, because I was sick and tired of it constantly crashing even during simple tasks. Maybe this installation will work better for me, if not I will go back to XP.

5. I read that to speed up LR it is good to keep the LR catalog on a separate physical drive than the pictures themselves. I did so yesterday, and there might be some point in it.

6. Make sure the mainboard and the case support several S-ATA HDDs, in case you would like to expand some time later.

Here you can nicely calculate how much power is recommended for your system:
http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
(assuming it is real, and not only on the sticker)

« on: May 16, 2008, 10:59 »
yeah, that is definitely a possibility.  I had big problems before with the drives dieing off and the monitor blacking out - then i upgradied the power supply to a 850W supply (I think i had a 500W one before).  I guess I don't know for SURE that I have enough power but I think that i MUST....

You cannot always trust the wattage on the sticker. Lower-end Asian manufacturers and vendors frequently overrate them, it is not uncommon for them to sell for example 250W PSUs as 500W or 550W. I dealt directly with some Asian manufacturers, and have first hand experience, usually a vendor can order the manufacturer to put any sticker they want for marketing purposes.

On the other hand, reliable vendors/manufacturers might sometimes even slightly underrate their power supplies.

I have a 500W from a reliable vendor, running Intel 2Core Duo, 4 HDDs, 512MB graphic card, etc. and I have had no problems so far.

This has been a film with a bad end.

Suspense built like in a Hitchcock movie, but a Mickey-mouse ending.

It sucks big time.
For the beginners there is no raise at all.
And it took them so long to come up with this.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Entry level or mid level?
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:37 »
I've read that some people say think that the new Canon Xsi is more like a mid level dslr. What do you guys think?

Since it is replacing the XTi / 400D, it means it is Canon's entry level DSLR.
Canon's lower mid-level is 40D, upper mid-level is 5D.
Still, XSi is probably a very decent camera which will satisfy the needs of many photographers.

394
Thanks for sharing the tutorial, Yanik. I will definitely try that.

Key words would be a good thing to keep in my spreadsheet since I'm constantly having to look them up on SS to see what I've used.

It saves time if you embed keywords/title into the photos. It is called IPTC, most sites can read it from the image, and you don't have to enter them every time ;)

I use my stock spreadsheet only for German keywords for images that I upload to German midstock sites. I don't want to have a mess with two languages in my Bridge keyword tree.

Granted, most of my pictures are scenery shots, but they're nice and I get a lot of d/l's on SS.

Because SS is a different kind of site, they sell almost everything that they accept.
You may try to look for similar photos as yours on StockXpert and see how popular they are. If it's scenery, the odds are they are not popular at all. The problem is not your photos, but the site's ability to sell them.

I take only outdoor photos, and from the micro sites I am satisfied only with SS and IS. DT is borderline, I keep uploading there, but maybe will drop them one day.

The rest of the micros are IMHO a waste of time and bandwidth, as far as scenery/outdoor photos are concerned. With a small portfolio I have better results in higher-priced agencies.

Well, I don't think I'll be offering any exclusive files so I won't have to worry about that.  Perhaps I could keep a spreadsheet with the file name and then list which sites accepted or rejected the shot.
Another question....pictures that were rejected by SS....should I submit them to the other sites just in case they accept them?

It depends why they were rejected. If both SS and IS reject a pic, it probably isn't a great stock photo. But sometimes SS reject photos that are easily accepted elsewhere. In my case it was some night city shots, SS said "poor lighting or incorrect WB", LOL  ;D, they were accepted everywhere else. Some people will say that SS is particularly sensitive about noise, although I haven't had a noise rejection yet (joined in March).
On the other hand, SS seem to like some photos which IS says are "overfiltered"  :D

I find that a spreadsheet to keep track of uploads is a very good idea. I have one spreadsheet with multiple tables (microstock, midstock, macro, monthly breakdown etc.).
I found thumbnails better than filenames. I insert thumbnails vertically, and agencies horizontally. A green field means the photo has been accepted, yellow- pending, blue - it is earning (with the amount), and orange means it has been rejected at the given site.
This doesn't cost much work, once the formulas are ready, just pasting the thumbnails and updating the stats periodically, and it gives a nice & quick overview of what has been accepted where and what profit it makes.

Site may accept everything but periodically delete unused files (not downloaded for specific period of time).

Mostphotos don't review, they accept everything.

Adobe Bridge is pretty cool for keywording. You can do batch operations, structure your keywords into sets. You can also have shortcuts to most frequently used folders in the main window. You don't have to type keywords every time, you just tick the box next to it, once you have your keyword tree ready.
