« on: February 08, 2015, 11:57 »
Same problem. There is a forum thread about it on SS, so I assume it is happening to a lot of people.

Does anybody know how this is handled at tax time?

My guess would be you pay your taxes as normal, they ignore it and get fined because it is easier to chase one big fish rather than a bunch of smaller ones. That's just a guess though. I really have no idea.

Seems pretty lazy.

I still do all eps 8. Can't say I have any problems.

Does the download on your site contain an actual font?

It seems like it takes a full 2 months to make sure you have the final total for a month.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: DeepMeta Question
« on: November 05, 2014, 13:51 »
Is it necessary to select subcategories in DeepMeta?
The keywords i add from lightroom are automatically imported to deepmeta but then i wind up spending a lot of time selecting subcategories.
While some of the subcategories are necessary and relevant, others really don't make sense to me and don't matter.
I guess the question is, if the image is selected will the top category display without a subcategory selected?

Yes

I know this is an old thread, but can you elaborate on this? I was kind of wondering about this the other day. Obviously, you want your core keywords selected, but does it really matter for the rest of them?

Vectors... Or did that happen already?
yeah, vectors -also ftp will be a nice touch too.
Vectors have been introduced a while ago already.

As far as I see on the site, you still have to contact them, then mail them a disk.

I'm a legal CS6 holdout. And honestly I would have just stayed on CS4 longer than I did except that I was able to find a reasonably priced CS6 and figured I'd make the jump now and try to run this version for at least 5 years before being forced to make some sort of change.

I used to be an infrequent updater too, and it's ironic that some of the updates in the last year have been the most useful Illustrator upgrades in maybe a decade. Live Corners is really useful and the new Curvature Tool looks like it could be as well (haven't quite got the hang of it yet). I'm not sure if they are trying harder or it just happened that way.

I think that I've said before, I'm not a fan of anything that requires monthly payments.

Me either, but I keep getting bills every month.  ;D

But Adobe as it exists today is not sustainable on the basis of a relatively few , relatively specialists users.

But that IS the whole market. It's a bunch of specialized creatives that know how to use a suite of software and jump from niche to niche within that market. I don't really see that changing much unless people start doing more 3D or holograms or something totally different.

389
I do not see a bright future for Adobe. Most of the customers who will buy an Adobe subscription are now on board. They are not going to grow the number of subscribers much further.  They therefore face a growth issue. Investors want to see growth.

They may believe that they can meet expectations by gradually turning up the price of subscriptions. In order to do this they are likely to be looking for ways to increase the perceived value of an Adobe subscription (because in terms of features the products are already, frankly, bloated). Personally I doubt that users want clumsy content integration.

Bad news for Adobe is that perhaps 70% - 80% (this is my guesstimate) of their customers are using less than 30% of the functionality of the Adobe products. These core features (and more) are going to be included free on the software which ships with Macs, iPads etc. Or a cheap (and often less bloated and more modern) app is good enough - now that print is dead, bar the shouting. Eg - the latest Pixelmator costs less than $30 and is now fully 16 bit.

I guess you haven't been reading what Adobe has been working on lately. Lots of smaller mobile apps. Lots of integration. Very interesting stuff in my opinion. I'm still kind of old school, but they definitely seem like they are preparing for the constantly evolving/future market. I don't know if they will get it right, but it seems smart.

I'm sure there is always a lawyer out there that would love to discuss "fairness". Although, they probably use the term justice.  ;)

Is none of the above an answer? I think you either have the types of images that are going to get you to certain earning levels or you don't. So, it doesn't really matter if you make more of them.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Finding a Mentor

Hello, I am a still a little new to stock photography and I am really interested in finding a mentor to help me learn this craft. Has anyone here had a mentor help them along the way? If so could you please share how you found yours? I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Does paying a bunch of money for a BFA count?  ;D

Is Stockhub something that looks interesting to you?

Not particularly, but I'm not all that focused on the big 4. So, I'm probably not the target customer.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: First Week of New iStock - How are you doing?
« on: September 22, 2014, 10:07 »
Okay, clearly it's way too early for meaningful trends []

So, why do you ask?
Trends are trends, a week is not too early to see them.

The credits I'm getting appear to be lower than the prices listed on the site. I don't know if this will fade as old credits get used and new ones are bought. I guess customers could leave as well. So, I think it may take time for things to settle into the new reality at IS.

Shutterstock.com / Re: IRS 1099-K Answer
« on: September 18, 2014, 11:23 »

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm not convinced that this is accurate, even if it is coming directly from the IRS. Your info says that reporting of the form 1099-K is not required on tax returns, and yet a microstock photographer is currently working to defend himself against an IRS claim that he didn't pay enough in taxes precisely because of his not reporting this 1099-K.

To me, it sounds like the IRS is saying one thing and doing another. Maybe reporting 1099-K info really isn't required, but that doesn't mean that the IRS won't come after you anyway and force you to defend yourself against claims that you owe them back taxes.

My take-away from all of this is that there seems to be no way to fully protect yourself from the IRS claiming you owe money on income you already paid taxes on as a result of these 1099-K forms. And the best defense is to simply try and not fall under the reporting criteria. I'm working towards that goal by splitting my payouts between multiple payment services, check payments, and direct deposit/bank transfer where available.

I guess I thought they used it as a trigger. If your reported income is vastly different (less) than what Paypal reports is coming into your account, then they might audit you. But, I assume that is the same with pretty much anything that looks suspicious or incorrect.

iStock suddenly raised prices for small images and dropped them for large images.
If only everyone else would alienate all the the customers that pay a couple dollars or less, everything would be great.  ;)

Seriously though, the long term strategy seems decent. If you want really cheap prices, buy subs. If you are not going to buy in bulk, then you have to pay more. Shutterstock kind of works the same way. I can't say all the details of what they are doing are good, but I like the idea of moving away from images for a buck. I wouldn't mind seeing other sites do the same.
I agree.  These are the first changes in a while that overall I think are ok.  As long as the sales keep going like they have this week so far.

Overall, I'll probably lose money on it because it is basically a price cut on the vector side, but I can't say I conceptually disagree with what they are doing on the raster side. I actually sell a decent amount of small sized images at Clipartof for $15 a piece, so that price seems in a decent target range.

General Stock Discussion / Re: PayPal 1099s coming back to haunt us
« on: September 16, 2014, 14:01 »
So one little 1099-K from PayPal is hardly some big issue.

Actually, what you described is very similar to what it would take to decipher the 1099-K. Basically, going through Paypal one customer at a time to see if that bill was represented on it. Otherwise, you are really just ignoring it.

File it with your taxes, and ignore the income. But people can't just ignore the form because they don't like it.

I would say the problem is that they don't seem to report everything on it. So, it was less than my total income reported, but more than my stock income. What they are putting in or leaving out would probably take hours, days or more to resolve. I'm also not entirely sure where or if it is supposed inserted onto the tax form. Luckily, mine arrived after my taxes last year and they didn't send me one this year. Maybe, they have eliminated the practice of sending them out or just send them to the IRS.

Some new sales trickling in. It looks pretty ugly. I had one sale that its last royalty was $3.60. The new royalty was $.80. Another sale that was around $1. That certainly seems to be at the bottom or below the credit prices that were discussed (about $4-$5 a credit).
