I've done searches on phrases like "microstock secrets" and the typical blogs come up, as well as some books on Amazon that may or may not have worthwhile info.

I think that if people want to share their "secrets" they want to see a financial return on that, like books by Rob Sylvan and Ellen Boughn.  Anyone read any of those and get anything out of them?  I've been thinking about getting them on my Kindle.

Yes, same here!!!!!

I noticed this seemed to start around 7/22.  Some pics are set to 10 credits for EL, and some are correct for 100 but those don't have the EL box checked, and I'm sure I checked it when uploading!!!!

For me, July total earnings were down about 4% from June.

But July 2012 was up about 40% from July 2011.

Anyone know any more about the sudden drop in Enhanced License Downloads this month (assuming it is still affecting more contributors than me!)?

Steve

It is definitely not just you.  Lisa and I both pointed out earlier in the thread that we both went from 1 or 2 ELs a month to 1 or 2 a day, which lasted from around Sept 2011 to April 2012, and since then we're back to 1 or 2 a month.

I leave it to my heirs to find out what to do :)

I have prepared an envelope containing addresses to all sites,
usernames and passwords, to be opened if I happen fo die.

That's a good idea, but also make sure your will explicitly states that you leave the rights to your microstock portfolio to a particular person.  As pointed out, make sure you take a look at that older thread to see how the big micros responded to the question.

OK, DT might not be "down" right now, but I'm wondering if sales are posting?

All week I've had strong sales until around 10 am ET on Friday.  Going on 24 hours without a single sale showing up.  (Typically on a Friday I would get around 20 downloads, but yesterday I ended up with close to 0.)

Anyone else seeing sales being reported, or is it just me?

Just surprised myself... compared July 1 - 24, 2012 to same period in 2011.  I'm up 75% at SS.   Can't wait until sales really hit high gears in Sept-Nov!!!

If I go exclusive to IS will I get 12c instead of 8c on my pics? Not a bad deal! 50% increase in revenue!
It will be much higher, 600% not 50%.  46 cents is the lowest you should get at the lowest level (4 credits)($.46 per credit)(25% lowest royalty level)=46 cents.  Also your RCs will about double so many people would be at a higher level as an exclusive than you would be as an independent. (XS prices go from 1 to 4 when you go exclusive so those would quadruple).

The problem is IS just doesn't sell like it used to.  If I took this month's IS sales as an independent and quadrupled them for the commission increase, the number would still be only one third of my total tally counting all agencies.

OK, maybe I'll get better exposure as an exclusive?  Double that figure again.  Take this month's IS earnings x 8, and I'm still only at about 70% of my total July earnings as an independent.

IS exclusivity just doesn't make financial sense.

From 1 or 2 a month to 1 or 2 a day? that just doesn't sound right mate, this shift is too dramatic.
From 56USD to 840USD worth of EL's in a month?

That's exactly right.  I think Lisa alluded to seeing similar dramatic changes when SS was running its campaign, or whatever was happening to drive EL sales.  I went from under $100/mo in ELs to some months around $1,000.  So it was quite a bummer when it all stopped.

Something must have been happening yesterday (Monday) because things have turned around today.  I surpassed yesterday's total at around 10 am today.

To the original question "DT still messed up?"...

My numbers suggest DT may be back on track.  There were a few awful months there, but lately my sales trend line has been rising nicely.  Maybe best match has reverted back to where it had been before the change?  (Perhaps others have already declared this to be the case and I haven't been staying as updated as I should.)

My sales numbers at SS are holding steady, but the income is way down.  I had been getting EL's almost every day for several months, and now hardly any ELs, so that inevitably had an effect on income.  Whatever they had been doing to promote ELs, I wish they would start doing it again :)

+1

It is really strange what happened with ELs.  I can track the wave as lasting from September 22 through about April 13.  Before this period I got one or two ELs a month.  Then something happened on Sept 22 and I started averaging one or two every DAY.  There would be a few weird gaps when they stopped completely, such as the second half of February, then they came roaring back.   But ever since April 13, I have gone back to one or two a month.  If SS was testing something with ELs over those 8 months or so, I hope they've crunched the numbers and determined it was a huge success and they need to roll that campaign out again, this time making it permanent.

Something seems seriously OFF at Fotolia today.  Is it a holiday?  Has there been a new best match update?

I probably haven't seen a sales total this low at this point in the day since a few Christmases ago.

I won't accept an answer like "some days are better than others"... my daily sales there are typically large and consistent enough to suggest that a major deviation points to something actually changing, or an unexpected holiday, or something being wrong.

Anyone else seeing unusual sales -- high or low -- on FT today?

389
I can't believe ANYONE is still uploading to Crestock.   They are the lowest of the low for me and I stopped uploading years ago.  I still have an open port, with a fair amount of pics that are great sellers on the real agencies, and I earn about $5 a month there.  I just keep the port open in case lightning strikes and they start doing well, but I can't see that happening, ever.

I'll admit I don't like the .25 sub sales, but I see a lot of 1.00 and 2.00 sales to offset them.  Plus, each morning I wake up to see a nice amount of Distribution Regular sales added to the prior day, in amount s like 3.80, 13.56, etc.

As for volume, for me they're up about 40%, comparing first 11 days of July 2012 to 2011.

Comparing first 11 days of July 2012 to 2011, I'm up more than 200%.

As far as I'm concerned, SS and 123 are the only sites on a great roll these days.  Most the other major players are either flat, posting minimal gains or in the toilet.

My ISP sales for July 1 - 10 are almost exactly what they were for same period in 2011.  Last few days nothing unusual... pretty decent actually.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT's official policy on 'similars'?
« on: July 09, 2012, 13:02 »
As discussed earlier in the thread, I'm convinced it's an algorithm that is comparing shapes, composition, colors, keywords, etc.  Spacing "similars" out over time, won't help.  The computer -- not the reviewer, whether newbie or veteran -- will catch them and kick them out.

I'm going to test that hypothesis with my next batch and will see what happens...

Best of luck... I hope I'm wrong.  Let us know how your attempts pan out.  (I've tried a few times in recent batches... a few cases of a single image that is somewhat similar to one other approved shot in my port... and was shot down each time, convincing me that it couldn't be a person finding the similarities... it would be like playing a match game with thousands of cards.  No one could do that all day long.)

We all know DT has gone bananas on 'similars' and I've already felt the sting when good shots were rejected.  I now have 3 images I want to submit - same subject, but collections of objects of different color sets.  Obviously a designer wanting to illustrate this subject might prefer one set of colors over another.  But it would be pointless to submit 3 only to have 2 rejected.

I looked around their site but didn't find any actual statement of the new policy on 'similars'.  Does anyone know from experience what might happen, or want to make a prediction?

Spread your submissions out over a few weeks.

I think that's what I'll do.  I know all 3 would sell over time and I don't want some clueless reviewer tossing 2 of them to meet a quota.   Nice that we now have to trick them into accepting photos that will make them money.

I tried that but didnt fly. I had unique designs, spread over batches, rejected for similar

Then they must be checking for keyword matches (like microbius said earlier), meaning we can't win.

For the first seven days of July, I'm up 15% from the same period last year.

Most of the agencies are showing higher gains than this, but the lousy performance of IS, DT and FT this year are offsetting everyone else.

EDIT: Just realized most people are just talking about IS... In isolation, they are down about 12% for me during first week of July.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT's official policy on 'similars'?
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:26 »
I'm wondering if the reviewers actually see and make a decision on similars.  I uploaded a set of four images about a month ago.  I knew two were similar to the others, but felt there was sufficient difference that buyers would want to be able to select between them.  They were uploaded via FTP.  When I checked the images to complete the submission (within one hour of upload), two images only showed a blank square, no picture.  The other two were fine.  It appeared the computer system was comparing newly uploaded images and kicking out those it considered too similar.  When I eventually got my acceptance notice for the two images that went through, it stated the other two were rejected as being too similar, even though to all appearances the reviewer had never actually seen the images.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I haven't necessarily seen the evidence of it as you have, but I think this sounds right.  I believe it's a computer algorithm (Serban even admitted this in the post quoted above) that is comparing new uploads vs those already in your port.  Otherwise, I can't believe every reviewer is comparing each new upload against every other shot in my port.  My port is fairly large now, and I'm getting "similar" rejections now for one new image that is somewhat close to one other image in my port.  That's finding a needle in a haystack.  Reviewers are not doing this alone... it's definitely an algorithm.

I'm Emerald, and my earnings took a steep plunge around March, though my ranking has held steady.  This suggests much of the top hundred or so contributors have seen a similar crash, otherwise, my ranking would have plunged along with my downloads.

Last few days have been surprisingly good for me at DT.  This could be yet another case of a change being good for some and terrible for others.  Most of the changes at FT and DT this year have been awful for me, so hopefully I'm finally getting the good end of a change.

Amazing.  Scorching, suffocating summer heat is the summer norm in my part of Florida.  Amazing that some of the rest of the country can't function in it?!

I can second this... took the family to Disney World this week (thank you microstock!)  Started out drenched by storm Debby, and the last several days have been miserably hot.  Certainly not what I'm used to... I'm practically melting.

As for SS... I think something affected them today.  My sales there were terrible today... about 50 to 75% lower than the other Saturdays in June.  Downtime today could explain it.

Pretty happy about June overall.

Up 50% vs June 2011.  Port size was up about 75%, which means RPI was down... thanks entirely to DT and FT's sudden downturn earlier this year.

Down about 5% from May 2012.  But... there were 31 days in May vs 30 in June, plus May had 4 Saturdays vs 5 Saturdays in June... so in reality I'm flat from May to June, which I can live with.
