The most recent 3.x.x just has minor changes ajt incorporated - a custom fix some of us incorporated earlier to show a global search if there were no results found on our own site - so I don't expect anything would be different.

I just checked my own site in IE 10 on Windows 7 (I'm at 2.9.9 too) and other than a few headings with the wrong color background (dark gray vs. white) it looks as it should.

IE 8 came out 5 years ago (March 2009) and I honestly can't see any value in fixing things up for it - the current IE version is 11. For my site, Bluehost's stats tell me 6% of my visitors are IE overall and 1.2% are IE 8 specifically

123RF / Re: New Limited Extended License?
« on: January 16, 2014, 10:49 »
I wrote support and they replied that the minimum price of an LEL is 20 credits.

I am tier 3 so I get 40%.  I got $1.24 so that means the total price was $3.10.

If the minimum is 20 credits then if my calculation is correct it is 15.5 cents per credit

That is way, way below the floor of 40 cents a credit (for the purpose of paying royalties) that all their past communications with us about small royalty amounts had mentioned. In things written before they slashed contributor royalties you'll see mention of 20 cent minimum royalties but everyone was on 50% back then.

See this post where a number of items come up, but I had received a royalty that would have meant the buyer paid 12.4 cents a credit - it turned out to be a mistake and they fixed it:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/123royaltyfree-com/100mb-sale-for-$11-58-wow/msg285837/#msg285837

This post here talks about discounts and how promotional credits are handled

http://www.microstockgroup.com/123royaltyfree-com/123-any-improvements/msg258098/#msg258098

It'd be nice if someone from 123rf would make a statement about whether or not we are now seeing credit prices as low as 15.5 cents a credit and will be paid only our percentage of that amount versus a floor of 40 cents a credit.

Clearly all the agencies can go back on any and all promises they made in the past. It'd be nice if they'd have the decency to tell us about these changes instead of just hoping we don't figure it out...

"Crazy he calls me..."

The idea behind this - and it's to be seen whether it's crazy or not - is to benefit us and our sites, not the agencies. They have eyeballs and search position and I think we can use that to our advantage.

But there is no way any agency could make this happen without our consent or participation, so it's easy for anyone who doesn't feel it benefits them to just not make those connections

3804
Couple of things. dreamstime supports Google authorship and a couple of sites let you connect to your Google+ profile, and I've written a blog post about what's going on there:

http://www.digitalbristles.com/getting-our-names-with-our-images-in-the-search-wilderness/

Also, here's where things are with my code changes that removed all the errors in structured data with Symbiostock sites as the updated pages have been crawled by Google (click for full size):

It started out with every page having an error, and we're now nearly done with the errors as the crawl catches up

3805
And here's a follow up blog post on getting the agencies connected to authorship and Google+ - if you have already set things up for your Symbiostock site (or already have a Google+ page set up) it's a small step to add to the agencies that support it, especially to dreamstime

I know this is an old thread, but having set up Google Authorship for my Symbiostock site - and written a blog post about it last month - I just did another blog about tying in with the agencies where possible. You can read the blog post and see some screen shots of the results here.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Launches Dollar Photo Club?
« on: January 15, 2014, 18:40 »
From the site itself it seems they're trying to peddle their dollar bin as something high end and restricted, but you're right that I couldn't find anything about exclusive images there

"Exclusivity

Exquisite images at straightforward prices
Select benefits and offers from high-value partners
Join Dollar Photo Club today and discover why it's the world's top photo club"

The application page says they have space for a thousand new members (and the whole idea of limiting this is reminiscent of those "limited editions" that were limited to however many people were daft enough to buy)

https://www.dollarphotoclub.com/Member/sign-up

So possibly Tech Crunch got the wrong end of the stick, or possibly the web site doesn't reflect what Fotolia PR people are saying about it.

Anyone who sells there want to ask what the contributor end of this giveaway is - and if it includes vectors and footage and all sizes for those prices?

Newbie Discussion / Re: IS I am confused..
« on: January 15, 2014, 16:10 »
I'm confused too.  One thing I find very confusing is that ALL of the accounting mistakes were always made in the contributors' favor and have to be clawed back.  Is that even statistically possible given all their screw-ups?

Surely somewhere along the line there were some mistakes in Istock's favor that we should be reimbursed for?  Maybe those just never came to light...  ???

I know of one, a few years ago!!

You'll be shocked, simply shocked, to hear that it took them forever to pay the money back AND that they miscalculated the amount owed...

That article talks about the "club" being exclusive - because who wants those overused RF images - but then says they'll have 25 million images. Where are they going to get 25 million exclusive images?

There was mention of some of them coming from Fotolia - if all of them are, then what exactly is exclusive?

And a monthly commitment of $10 is peanuts; how do you avoid giving away the store at $1 a pop to "smaller" buyers?

Nothing mentioned there as to what a contributor will make from this - let alone who would give an exclusive image to a dollar store...

Computer Hardware / Re: Which PC or MAC would you buy "now"?
« on: January 14, 2014, 17:21 »
You must mean 1987, the first Mac wasnt even around until 83. My first Mac was the 512K in 1984. I think the Mac II came out in '86 or '87. The company got a few 512K boxes in 83 (they came with a case so you could take them home but they were heavy) and asked me to figure them out so I could teach others. It had MacPaint and MacWrite for software, that's it. By 1987 I was learning QuarkXPress but Photoshop wasnt around until 89. It was called something else though. I use an iMac now and love it, the monitor is much improved from that old glossy screen. It is very compact but really sturdy.

She said Apple II, not Mac II and that could have been '82

3813
Perhaps - if you wanted the experience and the trip - you could work a deal with model and property releases so you could sell some stock images from the shoot. Perhaps also use of the models for a bit longer with some shoots for you on the grounds or around the house? You might want to take a look at existing pictures of the property to be sure it'd be a good set for your own stuff.

3814
I think I'd point him to some of the write ups of Getty's lawyers going after people for unauthorized use and make it really clear that doing this is putting him (and his employer if he's doing this for work) at risk of getting a very large bill or being sued.

Also tell him that you will send him a bill for the license fees only if he uses it - because you're his friend - but no one else will be that generous if he gets caught.

I have had situations where people I know who license work (not photos) were using photos they found via Google (without buying licenses) that I recognized as stock - you'd have thought people in that situation would have been more aware... In that case though, they changed the images once I pointed out the issue.

Use Getty as the big scary example even if that's not where they were planning to steal from this particular time - they're the clearest example to drive the point home, IMO

3815
I do see it on my portfolio page, but not on the gallery page (or did an hour or so ago)

3816
I like the look of the image gallery much better, but I prefer the organization possibilities - plus the link to my website - from my portfolio page. In particular the ability to make sets in whatever groupings make sense to me to give an overview of what's in my portfolio.

It's a bit confusing to have both and a shame that the one with fewer options looks better than the one with more! Let's hope they do something to consolidate these two overviews of a contributor

123RF / Re: New Limited Extended License?
« on: January 11, 2014, 18:23 »
My lowest LEL in 2013 was $3.60 - which would be the right amount for the promised minimum credit value for the purposes of calculating royalties - 40 cents - times 45% times 20 credits.

So, these lower numbers are either a smaller number of credits or 123rf has imposed another rate cut on contributors and changed the minimum credit price to something below 40 cents. At level 4 (45%) the minimum royalty per credit is 18 cents and if you divide $1.40 by 18 cents you get 7.777(recurring) which is clearly not a valid number of credits.

In spite of the high likelihood of an unsatisfying answer, I'd contact support about that $1.40 royalty and ask them to explain how it can be correct. An XXL image is 6 credits - hard to see how an extended license, however limited, can be a hair under 8 credits.

Lovely!

Things seem to be mostly working but here are a couple of things I noticed:

1. You fixed the problem Martha noted where the preview falls off the right side of the browser window, but the same thing happens if you're at the bottom of the window - the preview is only partially visible and needs to move up by the amount that's hanging off the bottom

2. There's an odd double flash as the preview loads the first time -  the window briefly appears and then goes away again. I can't get a sure-fire description of how to get the double flash but it happens a lot (Chrome, Mac 10.9.1)

3. The alt text (tooltips) shows the title much of the time but it then switches to "undefined". This comes and goes, even for the same page of search results, so it's not a problem with the image itself as you'll sometimes see the title and sometimes see undefined

4. Should we (you!) dump the magnifier icon now there are hover previews? It seems redundant even though you can see the sizes & prices on that window.

5. Once or twice I got a bizarre double preview window for the same image - one a bit higher up than the other - plus a preview for a second image. I can't reproduce this though.

It means they have very good peopleskills and know how to respect the community as a group of independent entrepreneurs that they meet at eye level.

Sorry but for me, 35 cents isn't "eye level."

The only place I get 35 cents (or less) is iStock or dreamstime - if you're going to criticize SS, at least keep up with where things actually are versus some straw horse that's convenient but incorrect.

StockXpert managed to do very well with stock.xchng as its leadin, but I thought that PhotoDune would have done better given all the other Envato marketplaces as a leadin, and it's just OK.

If it's just by invite, then it's more like the Getty-Flickr deal, just without the large existing buyer community :)

Pinterest and social media are good for buzz and eyeballs, but I'm not half as convinced that this has anything to do with sales. People spending a ton of time with free stuff is not a "gateway drug" for licensing stock images. From what I've read of Pinterest demographics, it's overwhelmingly women.

It could be work related, but I'm guessing it's more wedding planning/party planning/project planning (making table centerpieces out of something fluffy and cute). I'm not a Pinterest user :) One agency - DT - has encouraged Pinterest users to pin our watermarked thumbnails, for example. I have no clue if this leads to any sales as there's no tracking tool I'm aware of.

DeviantArt had some sort of deal with Fotolia to license work - not sure how that panned out, but if you look at download numbers in the 2,900+ collection, only the first 200 have double digit downloads and 1,000 of them have no downloads at all.

If it's just another agency, not sure why they'd be able to succeed where PhotoShelter failed (not sure how many others here joined PhotoShelter's short lived effort to be a stock licensing agency). Or why they'd be a better choice than a new agency like Stockbo (or any one of the many new entrants who show up here).

There's a big difference between showing off your work to others and licensing your imagery (model releases and property releases, plus derivative works such as the infamous Obama poster) - only a subset of work from the portfolio sites is applicable for licensing commercially.

Dreamstime.com / Re: New to DT, question about sales
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:42 »
DT performed surprisingly well (for them) in November and December, but this month - always a slow one - is back to normal. Masses of subscription sales.

What I found a bit disconcerting was looking at some of my level 5 image sales and noticing that the few that weren't subs were those highly discounted numbers of credits - I think that's a new buyer deal of some sort. It's certainly nice to see images get lots of downloads, but at DT it's a double-edged sword as I think it means your proportion of subs for those images will increase.

I should note that I haven't gone back to analyze all the sales data. These observations were from looking at a few of my level 5 images after I saw a very low royalty on a sale at maximum size.

edited to add - right on cue, I got another of those discounted sales for a level 5 image to with today's bunch of subs sales. 10 credits for a large that should be 17 credits!

As usual with those toerags at IS the words "we are sorry", "we apologize" or "we regret" are missing from their vocabulary.
Would you prefer that they lied and pretended they actually GAD?

First choice: they were so meticulous and talented in running the site that mistakes didn't happen

Second choice: they actually cared about contributors

Third choice: they respected contributors enough to treat them professionally and apologize profusely when they find they've made a mistake even though they didn't really care
