I think quite a few companies have slipped up by worrying about the competition and not focussing on the customer...... Seems to be SS are a very well business which before everyone gets started that doesn't mean its always great for suppliers.

I like them too but do feel sales are slowing and their site has not been so reliable of late hope they start to pick up

2 cents. My photos are generally landscapes, buildings, and animals, so I can't speak to isolated object, people, or emotion concept photos. That said...

My "best" photos are not my big sellers. In micro stock, many people are looking for what I think of as purely "functional" images. I have several photos of a historic building up, and the one that sells is a straight on, boring, centered image. The other, more artistic photos, taken at angles and using the rule of thirds, have never sold.

I think if you're someone putting together a brochure or some kind of advertisement using a stock image, you're generally going to want something basic, and not an arty kind of shot. A question a lot of folks post here, and I try to take it to heart is, "What would someone do with this picture? Why would someone buy it?"

In landscapes, you'll probably have a bunch of shots rejected for issues with shadows. I'm actually surprised you had luck with the tent picture; reviewers are often negative about that sort of thing. Overcast is usually not my friend when it comes to getting images approved.
I agree ....stock is not about art its about meeting a functional need...most images will only be viewed for seconds on a website, magazine etc etc they are not going to be hung on a wall for years to be admired. Shutterstock in particular detest shadows

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your February sales?
« on: March 07, 2016, 11:51 »
By my modest standards a pretty average month with nothing especially great but no big falls either  sounds like I should be reasonably grateful.....on the other hand March has got off to a very slow start.....early days though so we will see.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Rejected - no resubmit
« on: March 06, 2016, 03:39 »
I've just had a couple of these for images highly topical regarding the EU UK at the moment.
It says not to resubmit. But there used to be an appeal type system - maybe the reviewer in whever-it-was didn't understand the images?
OK - it won't make me rich one way or the other. But looks like a missed opportunity for my pics....
Any thoughts?

Just resubmit as new.  But I must say that Istock accepts everything nowadays, so maybe you might consider looking at your images closely if they are being rejected.

I find them incredibly picky on captioning of Editorials so much so I decided it wasn't worth the grief. Also can be very fussy on Property Releases.

Selling microstock is very hard work.......spend a year taking photos you enjoy and improving. If you are still enjoying it you can always go back and do the extra processing/keywording etc to sell pics. If you get into Microstock too soon it may well kill your enjoyment of photography and will constrict your development as a photographer.

Veer / Re: Veer closing
« on: March 02, 2016, 13:46 »
you would think that when a company closes doors the client reassesses their needs and budget. it is not a certainty that the client will just obey and move in flocks to istock. they might go with a cheaper option. so the question is, who is the cheapest at this moment in time? shutter adobe dreamstime deposit etc

I guess its those who have longer term agreements.....I'm not sure what the situation is if they say "no thanks I want a refund."  Mind you if my sales are typical you can get all their clients in a Taxi!

Thank you for your input everyone. I have the image on alamy, should I send them to that link for an EL?

I have no idea what to ask for ... what does shutterstock make off of an EL? Should I just make it what they would earn? They want 5,000 prints ...

I'm not a good at pricing, I would rather be taking the photos than quoting. I always undercut myself too.

I assume its RF on Alamy ....if so that sounds a good option

123RF / Re: Do you make $100/month at 123RF?
« on: March 02, 2016, 03:31 »
It's impossible to make over $25 a month at 123RF

No its not I'm a pretty average/below average earner and I quite often get over $25 there ...don't confuse your own results with others I daresay you do much better than me on some sites

What strikes me when I see these old threads is the fact that ALMOST NO ONE on them is around here anymore.  They've given up on microstock, realizing it is unsustainable.

One of the guys is the NiltoMil guy who ran a blog that would detail his rise to earning a million dollars in microstock.  Long gone.

I assumed he was one of the people who said he earned $1m in the Poll. Calling yourself 123Shutterstock would not be a good move you would find yourself in court PDQ

The language is not entirely clear to me, and site is gone so... will our content featured on veer be handed over to be licensed by istock???

As I read it no.....you have to apply to become an Istock contributor and MAY be fast tracked...I am on Istock but do have some Veer content that didn't make it on there when their inspection regime was stricter. Surely there can't be many on Veer and not on Istock...why would you do that?

123RF / Re: 123rf considering an IPO?
« on: March 01, 2016, 16:09 »
They're no adobe though are they?.....small fish with delusions of grandeur? I think its more likely they will be gobbled up by SS. For what its worth my prediction is in 5 years there will be many fewer agencies.........

123RF / Re: 123rf considering an IPO?
« on: March 01, 2016, 15:40 »
If we value ourselves as a stock images company, compared with if we look at ourselves as an ecosystem, it will be differen. Does the market like us as an ecosystem, or will they us as having no focus and trying to do too many things? Personally, I think ecosystem is the way to go, but if we IPO too early, the market may not like that we seem not focused" what is an ecosystem. Article reads like a load of waffle to me......I quite like 123 but I don't see it has a lot to offer investors.

DT has the worst reviewing policy of any stock agency. They don't get my work anymore.
Not while Photodune are around  ???

There should be an easy way to upload anything to istock. Their upload system hasn't been updated in a decade. I can help them update it in a week or two if I have a few developers to work with.
It does make you wonder if they are serious about staying in this market in the long run they haven't done anything.......

3847
I notice no one has ticked the Billion  box yet only a matter of time........

For me, BigStock performed really well this month. More then Dreamstime and 123rf combined.

I know, it is an old topic, but I want to ask a question. The consensus above was to not upload SS portfolio to BS, because it would cannibalize sales on SS. But do you think it is really so? Let's say I have an image which sells well on both SS and BS. Do you think if I remove it from BS I will get more sales on SS? I think if image is removed from BS, a buyer will simply buy some other image from BS, because I do not think a lot of them have subscriptions on both SS and BS. What do you think guys?
Its not great for me...but I don't think we can ever know re the cannibalisation thing ...I would say upload some and see if it works for you...people can have widely different experiences on the smaller sites

Can you please add >1,000,000
Would anyone earning over a million really be bothered to complete the survey? If it was me I would be far too busy spending it or creating more images.
