New Sites - General / Re: Fotomina« on: April 10, 2009, 07:36 »
That's a single guy that doesn't even has photos. Looking at the page source, he is using some free script from a blogger, registered in Nepal. He forgot even to fill in the keywords and description metatags in the HTML head. It's a joke at its best, and an identity trap at the worst.

You can't have a union of stockers for the simple reason you can't set up pickets on the internet.

General - Top Sites / Re: Sales on Shutterstock vs. Fotolia« on: April 09, 2009, 22:30 »Flemmish - I took a look at your script, but I don't think I understand it. How will it change how I currently input data to an image? - Maybe I am missing something, I will look at it again. thanks. You have to type or paste your keywords in the second frame = Clipboard. You can do this several times. Duplicates will be removed automatically and misspelled keywords highlighted. You can delete, edit, sort. When done, you have to copy and paste it into the IPTC by a program like Irfanview. I should make a simplified version sometimes, perhaps the Help section is too complicated. 406
Dreamstime.com / Re: I love the new DT search engine !« on: April 09, 2009, 21:43 »I find it ironic you would mention me here - doesn't begin to show my imagery until page 5, and that's using 80 images/page! Switch from relevance to downloads and you're on page 1. That's why I was "whining" in the DT thread when it reverted to relevance default. ![]() There are 16,000 search results for "airplane" now. DT has grown a lot. 407
Off Topic / Re: Easter and Pesach« on: April 09, 2009, 21:35 »but don't forget the real meaning behind these dates! The real meaning, for us pagan infidels, is that the spring/fertility/reborn nature rites is one of those festival events that has been hijacked by christianity, just like Xmas. ![]() Ever thought where the easter bunnies, rabbit, the little chicken and the eggs come from? Quote This holiday has been celebrated every spring all over the world in an unbroken tradition going back to many centuries before Jsus was even born, and thus cannot have had any original connection to him. 408

In my Firefox, the Flash doesn't work, - and in my IE, the Flask works but not the zoom. @madelaide: flash is great as an extra, but not on the main landing page and without a mirror in HTML.

General - Top Sites / Re: Sales on Shutterstock vs. Fotolia« on: April 09, 2009, 16:57 »You probably already know this, but at Dreamstime you can boost your search position by having accurate titles and descriptions and keeping your acceptance rate high (only submitting stuff you are SURE is top quality). The BigStockPhoto search engine uses the same principle as DT to identify vital keywords vs secondary ones. It's a good approach as long as they don't accept the fundamental solution of the contributor's keyword ranking as measure of importance. I'm doing that for 3 years now by my keyword ranking script but Fotolia keeps giving very low dowloads compared to BigStock, and I don't see any difference as to download for pictures before and after end 2006. So I guess this Fotolia 7 thing is an urban legend. DT can't change the procedure any more now, not with 5M images. It's unfeasible that contributors will crawl backwards through their port to rerank their keywords. As to AR on DT being important for SE rank, it's not enough to have high quality photos, but they should pass the commercial value test of the reviewer too. Sometimes that's a bit off, though much more reliable than on the Atilla sites. I also avoid editorial now on DT, since most of my editorial was rejected for unclear reasons to me, and this dragged my AR down to 72. (although my best seller over sites, also DT, is an editorial image). 410
General Stock Discussion / Re: Referral Statistics to Make You Pull Your Hair Out« on: April 09, 2009, 16:44 »I have 23 submitter referrals on Dreamstime. All combined they have 301 images online. I've made $47.45 from them. I have $50+ from just 2 active referrals on DT. The passive referrals might have joined to be able to download the free pictures. @Yuri Arcurs, he is so organized and perfectionist I'm sure he will have signed up with a family member or so as his referral to maximize income. 411

Mostphotos.com / Re: Who has had sales at MostPhotos?« on: April 08, 2009, 20:53 »LOL. Welcome back to MP. What changed your mind?- It's a great site as backup for all your shots. - It's nice to browse around in the image set of great photographers, as those aren't filtered by the LCV filter of microstock. In general, there are great photos on MP, though not all is stockworthy. 413
Newbie Discussion / Re: Do you make a living at this?« on: April 08, 2009, 18:51 »This is getting way OT Well not really, since the definition of "making a living" depends on the place where you live, especially since this is a global business. 414
General - Top Sites / Re: Alexa traffic ranks« on: April 08, 2009, 18:17 »Feel free to do a search on this forum for Alexa and you'll get all the answers you want, need, or could ever wish for. Short answer, they changed the way they measure traffic which had a large impact on iStock's data. You're correct. The iStock dip isn't visible at all on compete. What's more, all these tools measure total traffic, which is mostly random and generated by Google. Picture tourists as it seems. The buyers will probably be a small fraction. It is measured by people that install the Alexa or Compete toolbar, and only people with a lot of time on their hands or too ignorant to remove it when it's installed by accident will use it. Probably not buyers. 415
General Stock Discussion / Re: keyword - should I maximize it ?« on: April 08, 2009, 18:09 »
I'm doing 50 maximum, but since I order my keywords in order of relevance/importance by my script, they can cut if off everywhere, starting from 10. Usually after 30 or so, I have to think hard what to add. I never do more than 50, since it's the lowest common denominator on all sites. On DT, and reading some hints of the admins there, less means more. It also helps on DT to check the actual keywords that were used to find the image, and they are very plain.

StockXpert.com / Re: A Quick Question About Submission To StockXpert« on: April 08, 2009, 18:01 »
1. I never do categories on Stx, never did, so the upload is painless.
2. I love the site's programming and looks. Well done, no hickups. 3. It's a pity the original team will probably have been fired by Getty because they used to be very OK before. 4. We don't know yet what Getty's plans are with Stx, but all this doesn't seems to be very good. Firing a team means you killed the soul, and you're only left with an empty shell of the site itself and the images. Maybe Getty was just interested in Jupiter Images and they want to get rid of Stx itself. 417
General Stock Discussion / Re: Project to use Drupal for a Photography Site, Photographer/Developer ?« on: April 08, 2009, 17:50 »I have looked at all the different flavours, Drupal is not that good with Images and Galleries, and I do not have php skills The CMS/forum frameworks like Drupal,Joomla,Wordpress are not really meant to do image galleries that are dynamic and searchable by keywords. The best one of the galleries is imho Coppermine. If you don' have programming skills or time, consider this: Lightboxphoto/ is a package that has all and you can install it on you own server, so no limits for space and bandwidth. It is 1000$ but imagining the price of your time it takes to program a working gallery with sales, it's a bargain. Doing it with tables in HTML is very time consuming, it's not searchable, and of course it's not dynamic so you can't upload images, but you have to code every new image in. There is an excellent package around for generating the html painlessly and I've used it for years: Arles. Being HTML only, not needing a db like MySql, you can park it at most free hosts. 418

New Sites - General / Re: When is Vivozoom going live?« on: April 07, 2009, 19:32 »I have 2 downloads and 0.78$ commission...Interesting, very. So their (secretly kept) reward is 0.38$ per image. They claimed they would be better than Shutterstock, referring to the 0.25$ mentioned at the SS page. Actually, my RPD at SS currently is 0.75$ due to the ODs and the ELs. I'm sorry but I'm not going to sell at 0.38$. Those days are gone. 420
Newbie Discussion / Re: Automatic rejections for newbees?« on: April 07, 2009, 19:27 »
I'm currently involved with a professional group of fashion photographers. Looking at their port is horrible. Models are static, don't smile etc... They are much better than me but they don't have a clue about microstock. To start with, they don't know how to keyword. I just told them to read ALL of the blog posts of Ellen Boughs on Dreamstime, and then we can talk. Me thinks that Ellen's posts are covering all issues about microstock, the do's and don'ts, except the technical aspect of the images (noise, levels, light, etc...)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Selling off of one's own site -- thoughts?« on: April 07, 2009, 19:18 »I would love to sell off my own site. I'm still fairly new to stock, but I'm a software developer and could certainly create and manage my own sales site.I'm working on a Coppermine mod to sell from my gallery. What is your framework? (in another thread today, I showed some examples). 422
General Stock Discussion / Re: Is it worthwhile setting up a personal site to sell photos?« on: April 07, 2009, 19:12 »I saw many people had their own website to sell photos. Is it worthwhile to do that ?I guess it depends on your content. If you only shoot microstock, it's overkill and you can suffice with a simple site with samples. But if you do a lot of specialized editorial or assignments/weddings/events and you have a large personal network, it's the way to go if you don't want to email at every inquiry. For instance, for weddings, you can keep the gallery private and issue the people involved with a password. 423
Dreamstime.com / Re: Why is DT being stupid?« on: April 07, 2009, 19:05 »He said "disable", not "delete".Correction: disable-all button. The images get erased 3 months later, but as soon as they are disabled, they are not for sale any more. Surely you know of at least one person whose account has been temporarily disabled as a discipline measure. To be honest, I don't. But that was not the issue. The issue was that RT stated that DT was committed to provide a disable-all button by the T&C and that's simply not true. 424
Dreamstime.com / Re: Why is DT being stupid?« on: April 07, 2009, 17:27 »Dreamstime have the ability to disable an account at a click of a button, they even make a point of telling you that in their terms and conditions. Where is that mentioned? I just read the T&C and I didn't find the mentioning of a delete-all button. About deactivating, they mention: "The Photographer is entitled to disable file(s) from his portfolio by using the appropriate section of Dreamstime.com (Management area/Online files)". Looking at that section, you'll notice that you have to deactivate your images one by one. That's what they are committed to, nothing more, imho. 425
