I don't understand why peoples total month earnings are down from 1 year ago unless they just have the same image quantity as a year ago. I only upload 25 images a week but am $100 up this month from a year ago and only submit to the 5 main agencies. As long as I keep adding photos my earning increase. iStock non exclusive giving me double of Adobe and Shutterstock.
In the last 12 months I've added 521 images and 88 clips. Images revenues are down 63% year on year, as reported. Return per down is down from 56cents/download January 2020 to 24cents/download January 2021. Adding more content will just mean that revenue won't drop as much but it will surely drop.

Welcome back to the January 2021 detailed monthly report during these increasingly strange and desperate times! https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2021/01/31/january-2021-brutally-honest-earnings-report-nice/Is Microstock still worth it in 2021? I can categorically say no, its not worth it unless those consider it some sort of hobby. In my case, Ive relegated this side-hustle to a sort of a fun past-time to upgrade some gear once upon a time as discussed above and if theres a bit left over to spend on travel (whenever possible, hopefully soon).
Theres more money to be made picking up loose change in supermarket shopping carts or turning cans/bottles over to recycling centres for a few quarters.

Spending even a few minutes re-uploading isn't worth the ROI to those turds

From applying and getting the green light, was 16 hours. By then it's pretty much old news.
How's your experience been uploading as "Alamy Live News"?

You know... with the convid and everything else that is going on... I wouldn't be surprised if you really did travel to the future and actually wrote that article from the perspective of 2031...
10 years ago if I made a post on my January 2021 earnings stating that on SS I would be earning an average of 23cents/download on 164 downloads with a port of 10,700 photos as I am, I would probably get a few laughs! On Alamy, so far this month I'm at $3 net on 12,499 images.

With another year / decade gone by Im happy to share with you my first monthly report for 2031 Special Edition, straight from idyllically-tropical island of Fernando de Noronha, 350km off the coast of Northeastern Brazil, where Ive been living for the past two years! Ive decided to stay as far away from civilization as possible with no regrets. Things started to get increasingly chaotic and dystopic especially with the new Covid strains, civil uprisings, nuclear strikes, etc. https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2021/01/18/january-2031-brutally-honest-earnings-report-special-nuclear-edition/Happy reading and stay safe! I just reached Tier 2 and on my way to riches!
First 100 images earned me a whopping $24.25.
Compared to my first 100 images in 2020, 52.7% drop ($51.64)
Compared to my first 100 images in 2019, 46.9% drop ($45.55)
Can't wait to report on my first 250 downloads (beginning of Tier 3)!
On my way to have a steak-lunch courtesy of SS 🤨

... If a buyer use it for commercial, contributor isn't liable at all, I think....
The issue isn't whether in the end a court would find you liable or not. That determination would be made at the end of a lawsuit. As someone licensing images for low royalties, you do not want to end up tangled in a lawsuit with all the attendant expenses.
Even if an agency would in the end be found to be the only one at fault, you can't stop someone from including you in the lawsuit.
We don't make enough money from licensing images to pay for lawyers. Make sure you check the correct boxes when uploading.
So is it appropriate to say it's more risky to upload and sell on Alamy than Shutterstock/AdobeStock because Shutterstock/AdobeStock don't leave the responsibility to determine commercial/editorial to the contributors like Alamy does? I thought stock agencies should take those responsibility because they take money from the sales of those photos.
Best to play it conservative and tick the editorial box just in case (if you have identifiable people and/or property). If a buyer wants to license commercially, Alamy will contact you directly (as they have done many times with me) to request to lift the restriction. Then it's up to you if you would like to take on the risk...good idea to ask how much the license royalties would be to make the decision.

I never understood the logic of sharing of how much you make. You only make yourself bait for those who would just love to break into your account.
There's money to be made talking about money

This is what they don't want others to see on a weekday.
Port = 10,660 images / 1,127 clips

Isn't the timing interesting, just a few weeks to go before everybody goes to Tier1 earnings?
Why wasn't he notified a year ago?
Seems like they are trying to anticipate the huge public criticism they will soon receive by using a scapegoat to warn others.

I'm still surprised and shocked that you're not doing better on Alamy.
They're Personal Usage raping my port.

All I see lately are suspicious low-priced personal usage licenses.

Latest 6 Personal Usage licenses where it appears that buyers are "mistakingly" purchasing the wrong license for cheap ($8-12 gross).
Do these look like wall-hangers or something you'd put on a gift card?

You seem to have found your calling with book covers! Nice work.
Thanks for the support! I'm afraid that I've opened up a Pandora's box and there's no way out of the dark side anymore...here's my latest capture...worried they may accept it (included within a wider context)

Steve how in the world do you this every month? Make money. I guess I am reasonably good at what I do...
To have probably the best cat picture on the whole internet is more than reasonably good!
Don't forget the ice bag! Search for "ice bag" and he's on the first page

I have been following Alexs helpful posts about book covers with interest, thank you.
When you applied to archangel did you create a separate website for your portfolio or direct them to one of you micro portfolio like Alamy or adobe? Just for the application process. How many images did you use?
Was a long time ago but from what I remember, I sent them a link to my Photoshelter website where I had/still have a lightbox of fine artsy type shots. Otherwise, Instagram could be a good option if you don't have your own website.
Highly recommend not to include any links to your port at microstock sites. Alamy stuff shouldn't be relevant for book cover market.
Good luck!
Hi Alex,
I was thinking the same thing, if it is wise to list your microstock portfolios... but in their application form they explicitly ask if you are with other agencies (and which). Did you use the application form or did you just send them an email?
Was in 2015 when I applied and they had a different process. I recall now that I included a link to my Fine Art America and Robert Harding ports. Other agencies, I believe they mean other Rights-Managed agencies...Alamy...Robert Harding...Trevillion, etc. Microstock shouldn't be relevant for book covers and would actually hurt your chances to being accepted.
