For those of you waiting weeks for a reviewer, I suspect you did not load your images correctly.

Assuming you used FTP to upload your images, there is one more step you must complete.
the images below will be of some help.

Click My Images on the front page.

Click the tab that says "StockXpert Briefcase"

Finaly transfer any images in the list to "Transfer to Gallery" Button.

Your images are NOW loaded correctly and will now be reviewed.

I hope this helps. Of and one more thought. I have currentl uploaded 281 images in total.
NOT ONE WAS REJECTED for any reason, 100% acceptance.

Best to you all,
The MIZ

MIZ,

Actually I remember that I didn't use FTP on this site. I was uploading in small batches over a period of several days ... but I appreciate the advice for when I do use the FTP :)

Were your ears burning? I was just watching your tutorial with the farmhouse that was overshadowed !?

Anyway ... I'll give what you say a shot as I was beginning to wonder  ... I didn't think anything of it since I had seen many cases in the forums of long wait times at StockXpert.

Thanks !

Ron,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and market statistics as well as your future insights into the future of your portfolio.

I am really glad MSG has created an open forum where people do not treat one another other as  the competition but rather as a common community or a guild that is able to share and learn from each other's experience. Here we see it at the highest level sharing with those of us aspiring to do better each day ...

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia tightening up standards a bit?
« on: February 09, 2008, 14:19 »
Though I'm yet a beginner, I've run into Atilla from the start.  I still have a 100% acceptance rate at DT going, but only 40% at FT, incidentally every picture but 1 that contains a sky has been rejected (there is no noise however, the one that was accepted it quite unique and has decent application for travel agencies), but every picture that has no sky has been accepted, usually very rapidly (I had one accepted in 30 minutes the other day).  Until the reports of Atilla subside somewhat I'll probably hold off on uploading any shots of any type that contain a sky to FT, might as well wait until the acceptance chance goes up instead of having them be rejected right away.  All have been for the "type of photograph, does not fit customers needs" reason, though some definitely have a use.  Power plants seem to have an application (especially the clean coal power niche that is barely represented) for some customers, another was a shot of the GA state capitol that was definitely better than what they have, seems that there could be a use for that in an election year, another was a shot of an Olympic torch, which they have almost none of, and it is an Olympics year.  Hmmph, oh well, they want isolated objects, they get isolated objects.

Mark - just want to join the chorus that the money spend on a better PnS to hold you over to a DSLR is not a wise investment.  Many bring up how cheaply you can get a DSLR and nifty fifty, unlike a PnS though that isn't nearly enough for most things.  Memory, spare batteries (Canon batteries can run $50 each), filters (need UV and circular polarizers), tripods, flashes, remote shutter releases, pc or hotshoe cables (or pocket wizards  ;)), bags, sensor cleaning kits, add up to a lot of money, and no other decent lens comes close to a 50 in affordability, the next closest will cost more than the body.  Though a 50 can do a lot, there is a lot that it cannot do.  I'm sure that for most here, aside from the few that have 5D's and greater and small collections of everything else, for the equipment that they use regularly, their body is less than 1/5th the cost of their equipment.  It is 1/5th of mine, and I have serious gaps in my lens coverage and could use a second flash, which would probably bring it closer to 1/8th or less of the cost of my collection, and my setup is still fairly rudimentary, though still pretty capable.  A decent setup with a XT body that has all the shooting capabilities of a 10X PnS will run in the neighborhood of $2000-3000, though it will outperform it in every respect by a mile...but you'll need a flash (250+), a macro lens (300+), a WA lens (400+), a standard lens (80+), a tele lens (600+) and all the other little crap that goes with it, in addition to the body, might as well start building the collection with any money you have now, instead of getting something that pretty much will have no use once you upgrade.

Waldo4,

I appreciate your time and effort for all of the very valuable pricing and cost advice. As I stated on a different thread ...  I will ALWAYS have a need for quality pocket-size camera. I captured a shot of an overturned diesel truck the other day just by making sure I have a coat pocket size camera with me all the time.

My next step is DSLR Body + Lenses and I'm leaning towards Canon. I am very grateful for all of the suggestions about body's and lenses as I have never shot that type of camera. Obviously it is the next logical step for me with equipment.

The money and costs of being a great stock photographer are only a minor concern of mine at the moment ...

Its more about developing my skills to the point of where I feel I deserve it. So that being said ... I've been putting in my time and efforts into learning everything I can through books, manual, tutorials, forums. I've been learning about composition, lighting, manual controls, exposure, equipment, what sells, what doesn't, why it sells, why it doesn't ... everything.

This was a bit off topic for this thread but I wanted to respond to your response in the lower half of your post above ... Thanks !

Back on Thread Topic

Wasn't FT running some sort of contest that started when the hit 3 million images ... I think it was based on getting the most images approved in a certain amount of time. This may have created part of the problem with getting approvals that we've been seeing lately.

I can't believe your photo was rejected ...

I'm about ready to give up submitting to FT

I agree that it is ridiculous the apple shot was rejected.  I like it a lot, at least at the resolution we have.

However Mark, I think it is time you stop talking about who you aren't going to upload to anymore because of rejections, and up your game.  I don't mean this to sound harsh.  But a lot of us did our best to persuade you to get a DSLR now rather than later, and offered advice on how to get a cheap set up (used Rebel, plus $79 50mm 1.4 and you are nicely set up).

That you are still receiving mass rejections at Fotolia means it is time to get more serious about the quality of your images and the equipment you use to produce them.  I know you are working hard to get into Shutterstock, and I applaud it.  But leaving Fotolia because of rejections seems bizarre.  Didn't you write you are having the same problems at Dreamstime?  You can join places like MostPhotos and FeaturePics and get images accepted, but 10 of those sites will not replace the sales of 1 Fotolia, or 1 Dreamstime.

You also need to be very careful with your rejection rate at Dreamstime.  The ratio is used as part of the search algorithm, which means the more images you get rejected, the farther down you will be in search results.  It's important you either get a higher acceptance rate, or stop uploading until you have the issues ironed out.

Please use all of us for advice and critique.  My advice right now is to concentrate on your quality, and not uploading to new places.  Best of luck.

DanP68,

As always, I do appreciate your input. I have been concentrating on quality. The DSLR will come, as previously stated at the link graciously provided by NAZ, by hopefully May. By my waiting I hope to buy a level up above the low end DSLRs.

Regarding your comments regarding my approval rate: It has increased signifiantly at DT since that last discussion. DT continues to be one of my favorite sites and I am doing well there :)

I've merely been commenting on the rejections at FT since it seemed really strange for me to start getting "mass rejections" when my skills and photos have only been getting better.

Could this be any more of an advertisement? You give 15 reasons to join and then post your referral link twice?

Naz,

Right I did give 15 reasons to join as that was the title of the article ... and as soon as I see anything wrong with the site, or reasons not to, I will post them as well (especially the lack of sales after say 6mths to a year).

When I have something meaningful to contribute that might benefit others ... I will do it.

I have no problem promoting a site that I feel will ultimately benefit the photographers and contribute in a significant way to their earnings. Likewise, I have no problem saying what I dislike about a sight ...

This is an open Forum and continues to be the #1 place for us to share are viewpoints, promotions, and demotions of the various sites.

Regards,

Mark

#8 The default "Top Rated" photos window showcases the highest MP Index photos for the last 3 days. You can apply different settings for while your browsing or searching, but the settings always go back to 3 days for the first search. This allows new images to be shown to anyone that is searching for the "Top Rated" photos fairly often

#9 The Photo Community concept really works. In my first few days there I have had plenty of feedback on my images that has been entirely useful. Those Swedish photographers that have been on that site from the beginning really know their stuff ! I am starting to see some familiar names that I've seen here on MSG if that's any sign ...

#10 There is member point system that encourages the ranking of your fellow photographers. You also get points for commenting on other's photos. All in all ... the point system is geared towards making MostPhotos an interactive community that works together to QC itself. From what I can tell so far ... this seems to work

#11 "Portfolio Summary" will show you things like you point total, and the distribution that you are receiving from the voting that has been done on your images, and the votes that you have given as well.

Mark

And the result of the above is a set of images akin to those on similar pages of photo.net or photo:sig, which are often far removed from useful saleable commercial stock.

Right.  And unless all of this adds up to sales, then it just doesn't matter.  Seems everyone has to have a strange angle.  I don't need a community rating system.  If anybody should be doing the ratings, it should be the buyers and reviewers.

As far as I'm concerned, there are the Big 6, plus 2 or 3 slow but worthy players, and a few very small sites worth taking a shot at just in case they take off.  Other than that, I don't understand the constant search for new places to upload to.  If you contributed to every site listed under the "New Sites/Low Earners" section, you would be considered lucky if your combined monthly earnings for all those sites was 1/2 of a month at Dreamstime.

DanP68

I agree. If it turns out that there are never any sales then you will be correct, but from my previous research here on the forums, people are starting to get sales and those sales are amounting to more than 6mths worth of work on time that has been spent on lesser producing sites such as CS.

Mark

The programming of the site is slick but too heavy. Try to login on a phone dialup in the jungle and you have to restart your PC because that useless large front page picture has to load. The site's programming is too heavy all over. Of course, that doesn't matter if you are on broadband in an industrialized country.

I uploaded about 500 last week, and got comments and ratings on a few since you should apply the Flickr-strategy: upload a few constantly to keep yourself in the attention. The rating and "community" thing is a big waste of time. My artsy shots are on top now, but not my sellers at the big 6. I guess it's a site for forum-whores that spend more time in browsing and commenting than in actual shooting and postprocessing.

Wait and see...

FlemishDreams,

The plumbing is more complex so it definitely takes more memory to load and browse the pages. However, I use a wireless (not wired) broadband card and am able to make multiple image uploads in very reasonable amounts of time.

I like mostphotos but I am not yet convinced that midstock will take off.  The problem is most of us are uploading our microstock images to these sites.  Anyone can find most of these images selling at lower prices.  If we upload new images that aren't on the micros, midstock might have a chance but that is taking a risk, as midstock sales are tiny compared to microstock.

Then there are established sites like alamy selling at higher prices than  mostphotos.  Should I upload my non-microstock photos there?  I think that is a better option at the moment because there are good sales there.

Sharpshot,
I agree with you entirely. When I see a trend towards midstock, I forecast that people will migrate towards midstock in stages. The first stage being a "safe" test with material from their microstock sites. There will be sales in both places initially from those that don't "shop around." Then those few sales $$$ amounts will amount to more than the $$$ from the low end producers in the microstock community. That will ultimately gain some traction and people will ultimately realize that perhaps they should stop uploading to those sites that are less profitable for their images.

Yes they will probably still stay at the Big 5 or 6 for awhile ... and why not? I'd would cetainly stay at any site that is a good producer for myself.

The ultimate goal, should be the migration of microstocks to midstock level commissions. As images start to be removed from "microstock" to be posted exclusively at "midstock" en masse then there will be real change.

I joined MostPhotos recently and here are the reasons why I will put my time and effort into them in the long run:

Here is referral link if you find my posting has influenced you to consider checking out the site:
http://mostphotos.com/index.php?mwp1969=3065

#1 I've done my homework  ;)

#2 The Website is slick, silky smooth, loaded with useful features for both buyers and seller ... basically the most powerful and all around useful site that I've seen so far ...

#3 Established Swedish Website that is going global and is starting to attract a strong  a strong following to its existing client base

#4 Sweden is becoming a technology mecca (I've traveled to Gothenburg on business before)

#5 I believe that ultimately "Midstock" companies will prevail over time as the microstocks debate the entire subscription issue

#6 Their pricing imodel is such that it can support paying the photographer a decent commission

#7 Their algorithm's for the MP Index ACTUALLY work really well which drive the best images to the top

#11 "Portfolio Summary" will show you things like you point total, and the distribution that you are receiving from the voting that has been done on your images, and the votes that you have given as well.

#12 "Request Critique" on an image is an incredible feature. New members are allowed to have 1 image listed with a request for critique which lists temporarily lists it in its own high traffic area of the website. As you earn more points helping others ... you can have more images per week listed in this area

#13 There is a "Members Online" feature

#14 There is a "Hall of Fame" page which appears to be those with the highest Point Totals from all of the rating, and feedback that I spoke of earlier which generates points.

#15 Finally ... aside from checking it out for yourself ... it has a pretty nice referral program paying you $1 Euro for every image sold by a referred member or bought by a referred customer

I hope you found this information informative. When you see me logged "online" (denoted by a green dot) on MostPhotos ... please feel free to shoot me message anytime.

This is all extremely interesting to me! I've heard a lot of different theories about stock buyer behavior

I guess we can't assume that ALL buyers are this or that... Most likely, some buyers are purely "heavy weight" buyers that need hundreds of images at a time and use only subscription; others are "per credit" buyers that shop around for the exactly right image they are looking for; and yet others are cost-conscious buyers that have done their research (all it takes is look around all the sites once) and who KNOW which site offers best deals and go to that site, and if that site doesn't offer what they need, they move on to the next most cost-effective site. And of course there are some buyers in between. For any sort of meaningful discussion about anything, including the future of stock industry in general, we need to know which portion of all the buyers each buyer type makes up. If most buyers are "sub" buyers - huh! Then per-credit $ is least important to both buyers and sellers, unless photogs unite and boycott sub-sites. HUGE collective action problem; will never happen. If the market is split more evenly, then "each" type of buyer matters, and stock industry becomes "politics" & sites will try to innovate to draw buyers to their side. Say, canstock & 123 don't sell individual credits, they are probably trying to fill the niche bw expensive subs & per-credit sales...

...i can probably write a whole academic article on market direction & buyer behavior & get it published :))) data availability might be a problem though, but if there's a stock site willing to hire me for data analysis ;))) i'm available...

LOL ... and I could assist as I do Market & Competitive Analysis by profession ... :)

LOL ! So, what do you think? Do I have a point? And being in "market and competitive analysis" - what are you doing here? Shouldn't you know all the secrets & where all the agencies are heading and so and and so forth? How'bout you give us your take on things? :)))

ChassingMoments

You make me laugh :)  While I cannot go into the details of my day job, I have very much become interested in the world of stock photography. As I am able to reach certain insights and conclusions over time form my observations and homework, I promise to share them on the various forums. While I am still very much a "noobie" when it comes to stock photography ... I do know how to analyze markets, competition, and competiting products very well :)

I do believe you have a very valid point :)  There are two (and perhaps 3) distinct types of end account users of our images.

#1 The first type of buyer, like you said there are the "heavy weight" buyers who will most likely have multiple subscription accounts from those companies that offer subscription and / or have major corporate accounts with Macro Sites. Either way they have big bucks to spend on subscriptions, or high $$$ photographs or licensing

#2 The casual user who sees an image that he or she likes but lacks the knowledge to know that the same image is available on another sight for $1 as opposed to the $15 that he or she is currently contemplating paying

#3 The hybrid user is savvy enough to do some moderate price comparisons and is likely to be registered at multiple credit type of accounts and might shop around for the best deal as they know enough to know they see similar if not the same image across multiple sites.

As microstock players well know ... its a numbers game. All of your images that sell 1 or 2x add up across multiple accounts and sites. Combine them with your best sellers across multiple sites and you can create a nice little revenue stream for yourself given enough time, effort, and patience.

All for now ...

I joined yesterday and gave credit to Leaf from a post of his elsewhere on MSG that drove me to their site. Then I found this thread.

The website has a top-notch "look and feel" to it and it is super fast to upload :)

Finally it is a site where we get to be the judge as to whether or not a certain image is marketable or not.

I see a great future from this site.

Please feel free to sign-up from my referral link: http://mostphotos.com/index.php?mwp1969=3065

I do see a trend evolving towards "midstock" agencies in the very near future. Sites like MP, FP and others are busy trying to carve out a niche for themselves while everyone else is debating whether or not subscription works for themselves.

After researching MP (I am a Market and Competitive Analyst)
I am very excited with this site :)

Best of luck to everyone and happy selling !

Photo Critique / Re: Critique need for Shutterstock Application
« on: February 04, 2008, 16:44 »
Mark,

I've just passed the SS test. I'm not even sure I'm really happy. I still don't like their marketing model. And so I'm not really sure I did a good thing to get in there. Anyway, I'm newbie in this. We do different things, yet you may want to view my SS portfolio that should be mostly (probably only) from those 8 pictures out of 10 that passed (Not sure what you will see, I've couple more shots in the queue. Anyway, if there are more than 8, sort them by oldest first and the first 8 are those that passed). I'm not saying you should shoot like this or that these are perfect shots, I'm far from that. It may be useful for you anyway.

I specifically made the selection to be safe. Here are the 2 of 10 that failed, both because of bad exposure:
http://www.stockxpert.com/browse.phtml?f=view&id=9209872
http://www.stockxpert.com/browse.phtml?f=view&id=8016492

Looking at your stuff, it is really hard to say if most of them will pass. As you can tell from me being new to SS, I don't have that much experience with their reviewers, but here are my comments.

The most important thing is - if you have shot they don't like because of the topic, they will look very closely to find what is wrong with it. If you have something they are really interested in, they will be much less interested in what is wrong with the photo.

1. Provided it safe bet from the property release point of things, it should be quite safe. I've not examined it at 100%, be sure there is NO noise in the sky.

2. This is very risky. They have tons of very colorful sky shots (some of them too colorful in my opinion). They will very closely look to find the weak spot and even then it may end up with "commercial value" rejection.

3. Should be safe, again provided that there is NO noise in the sky.

4. Unless I'm missing something special about the theme, this will be rejected with "commercial value" rejection.

5. Very risky, they have tons of this from all angles. They will look very closely.

6. No comment, I'm not familiar with this area, it seem to be illustration rather than photo.

7. I'm not sure here, it may be risky as well, yet they like food and are less picky on it.

8. I think this will get the exposure rejection. They have tons of this and they will consider the deep shadow to be a problem.

Best of luck to you...
