Symbiostock - General / Re: Backing up
« on: August 30, 2013, 17:32 »
I just checked my cPanel and I have 4.5GB of storage used right now plus 50 MB in a MySQL database. I have only 260 of my images uploaded so far (I have a family website and my husband's blog elsewhere on my site, but that accounts for only 1.5GB storage).

I have about 380 images and I am using about 1.4 GB of space (which includes a 4 MB MySQL database).  I'm not sure why your usage is so much higher.

I think it has to do with the differences in the types of images we each have. Most of my recent stuff (since early 2009) is from my 5D Mk II and is 5616 x 3744 at full size. Photographs often take up more space as JPEGs than renders because of the many small variations. I also have a number of composites and panoramas that are bigger than the camera maximum. So my typical JPEG size is from 5-7 MB and the composites and panoramas can be up to 25MB

...I ended up choosing a company called Backup Machine https://www.backupmachine.com/a/72482iudjs/ (affiliate link, remove everything after .com if you'd rather). They offer three different price points: Free, $4.99 & $9.99 a month. Because of some additional databases and storage I have on my server I needed the additional space so I went for the $9.99 plan....

I have a portfolio of about 2,500 images. By the time I'm done uploading, I think I'll be way over the maximum Backup Machine supports even with the 9.99 plan (10 GB).

As far as I can tell, VaultPress doesn't have a maximum file size.

Given how much time I'm putting into getting my portfolio into my Symbiostock site, it's a little unnerving to read that Bluehost's backup isn't reliable (or isn't even being done).

I'll look into VaultPress and Backup Machine. I already use Backblaze for my offline backup of my local work, one of three legs in my backup stool, so I'm OK with online services as long as they have a decent reputation. I don't care about the images themselves, but all the work put into cateogrizing and doing the SEO who-ha, menus, etc. etc. I wouldn't want to do this again. Something that is automatic is a big win in my setup.

To that end, would other people who use a paid backup service for their Symbiostock site care to say what they use and if they'd recommend it?

Whoops, I just realised I hadn't put the closing tag in my code snippet!

It should be:

Code: [Select]
<i class="icon-chevron-down"> </i>
which would explain that effect. Sorry about that!

As you say, it should work, and I have a test installation with the menus built the same way which has all the down-arrows in place. I've been right through the code, which is partly WP core and partly Leo's, and can't see where it goes erratic.

Thanks - that works much better :)

I noted that if I use the code on all menu items with sub menus, I get double on those that got an automatic one. So I guess I will know when the bug gets fixed when I get double chevrons on the menus that now have one :)

4130
I tried adding <i class="icon-chevron-down"> as you showed to one of my menu items that's missing the down arrow and got an amazing "flock of birds in flight" effect all over my home page - lots of arrows, but none anywhere near any menu items!

I removed it - and the display returned to normal. Perhaps with CleanTheme 2.0 as my child theme this isn't an option?

It's still so odd that some sub menus are handled correctly and others not - IOW it should just work...

General Stock Discussion / Re: need a critic
« on: August 29, 2013, 19:04 »
You need to decide what the subject is - what Ron posted (if those are your past examples) are neither tight enough nor wide enough to tell a story. Cascading water drops on a sunny day can be lovely, either frozen in space or a stream (shutter speed will determine which).

And as noted, your shots are underexposed, the colors look bad - it looks like the sort of yellow light you get right before a thunderstorm - and I see nothing artful in the angled horizon.Try on a day with less wind so you get a smoother surface on the water to reflect the sky - masses of gray ripples does nothing for the appeal of the image.

What sort of advice were you looking for? This subject just doesn't look promising for stock - is this some sort of local landmark?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS Newsletter - A collection of excuses
« on: August 29, 2013, 18:03 »
How many years in a row will this make it that they introduced something "new" in September and totally effed up the site?

The time to make site changes is in the slow months - Jan/Feb and July/Aug. Even for great development organizations there are bugs to be worked out. And iStock's development organization (which may have nothing to do with the skill of the developers; can't really say from the outside) has to rank among the least competent out there.

The newsletter could have used an editor (for clarity) and a copy editor/spell checker.

Day late, virtually content free and what content there was suggested months of site malfunctions

Woo yay!

4134
Someone else is having this problem at the moment I think because of where she has installed her wordpress.

What is your site name so the technically minded can take a look when they arrive

My problem is different. I can click on thumbs and see images without any problem (as long as they're not from the SYXtra plugin).

In Settings/General I have the WordPress URL as sitename.com/blog and the Site URL as sitename.com. That is a WordPress recommended way of installing and Leo yesterday said he thought he had a fix that would make this work as it should.

The symptoms I see are that my networking stuff - and symbiocard - have the wrong URLs, as does any e-mail sent - such as to a buyer who just created an account. They should use the site URL and it is using the WordPress URL.

4135
if your wordpress install is in /blog then your symbio should be also, otherwise paths may not be accurate

And it is. Leo says he thinks he's found the problem; I assume a fix will be available soon

4136
yes, I just everything at http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog   - the 'network card' I was referring to is the symbiocard.csv or xml file which is at http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/symbiocard.xml

there's still something strange though -- is your wordpress install also in the blog subfolder?  it should be

your site is now active at http://symbiostock-search.com

Yes, my wordpress install is in the blog subfolder. Leo has the details of what's wrong - other than the card being in the blog subfolder, the URLs in the buyer login e-mail (and I assume all others) all have the wrong site URL (with the /blog at the end) so nothing they clicked on will work. He said he's looking through my site to see if he can figure out what needs to be done - either to Symbiostock or to me :)

thanks

I thought this sounded great and downloaded and installed the SYSXtra thumbnails widget.

I didn't get the results as you show on your examples - my images were crammed together with no intervening space and they were stacked vertically, not across. I tried this in the under content area (with 6 images) and in each of the three areas across the bottom (3 each). I took the widgets out again as they looked so wrong.

I am using CleanTheme 2.0 as my child theme - is that why your plugin doesn't work for me as it does for you?

I have Symbiostock 2.6.1 and WordPress 3.6

I couldn't see any setting that would let me choose the orientation of my thumbnails. What did I do wrong?

Also, I didn't get the enlarged image preview (loupe) on any of the thumbnails - is there something else I would have to install to get that?

Update: I found the place to enable the image loupe and after I did that, my thumbnails looked normal (space around them) and were arranged horizontally as I expected. Not sure if the vertical orientation was related to not having the image preview enabled, but it's working OK now.

I really like the idea of having some row of topical items on the front page that I can change via a few keywords or categories - I put one there that said "Fall is coming" for example.

I would love to see the ability to say 1 row or 2 rows of thumbnails rather than specifying a certain number. 10 fits across on my computer or laptop, but on an iPad it is more than one row and doesn't fill the final row

Right now, if you click on any of the thumbnails on my front page, you'll get the "Oops" page instead of the image page - until Leo fixes the problem where the wrong base URL is used (picking up the WordPress location versus the Site URL), all the SYXtra links are broken. I'm assuming/hoping that once Leo has the fix for the overall problem, SYXtra will just work.

4138
Thanks

4139
Thanks for the feedback.

If uploading a larger watermark (I've seen yours as a "bleed" and wondered about that) is OK, then the comments in the template that the dimensions must be exact for that file aren't quite right. It's OK as long as it's square and you take your chances with the design if you make it larger and don't take into account it'll be cut off?

I might just redesign my watermark a bit if it's the correct behavior that the PNG file is never scaled regardless of the size on the image page.

4140
I have Symbiostock 2.6.1, WordPress 3.6 and my watermark was made with the templates kindly provided by another Symbiostock user (http://www.symbioguides.com/knowledgebase/branding-templates/)

Take a look at a vertical image (cut off)

http://www.digitalbristles.com/image/fallen-leaves-line-road/

versus a horizontal one (looks good)

http://www.digitalbristles.com/image/grace-bay-beach/

I figured the watermark would scale but it doesn't. The vertical image is 393 x 590 - a standard Canon 5D Mk II image that is 3744 x 5616 scaled down by the image processor

Do I have to make my watermark 393 x 393 (or keep the image to that size) vs. 522 x 522? The example shows art all the way to the edge and I didn't even come close as I'd seen things cut off even on horizontal images when I did that.

I can change the watermark if need be, but I want to do something that will look professional on 100% of my images. If this is a bug, then I can reprocess images once it's fixed

4141
Aaah! That explains a lot :)

But what, if anything, am I losing by using Home Page Simple?

4142
I was a new install, so the uploader sort of worked for me - but only one image uploaded when I selected 4. So I switched to the FTP uploader which works just fine and is easier for me.

Out of curiosity, why do people use the browser uploader - that you don't have an FTP app (I've used that for almost all the microstock uploads, so I already had one)? Is there any "gotcha" about using FTP to upload to Symbiostock that I should be aware of?

4143
I've sent Leo some e-mail explaining what's up and asking if he can look at the WordPress site address field when setting up locations of things

4144
Problem with this site is that it was installed in /blog folder, but somewhere in wodpress config, site address was set to /. Now some functions use address with /, and others with /blog. Files symbiocard.csv and symbiostock_image_info.xml were generated and look ok, but they are located in /blog folder. I don't know what to do with it...

I can manually move them to the root if that helps. I know I'd have to do that each time I regenerated them, but would a manual move cause any other problems?

4145
Hi Jo Ann

Your site is showing up nicely under www.digitalbristles.com  not sure why you want it to show as www.digitalbristles.com/blog, or am I misunderstanding ?

To set your symbiocard (replace the ladybird logo)
go to
Users
Your Profile
scroll down to Symbiostock Profile and Extended Network Info
immediately underneath this is a box to add the URL to your Personal Photo - add the url then scroll down and click Save

Hopefully this should add the image to your Symbiocard/personal photo and replace the Ladybird logo

Thank you! I now have my logo in place of the ladybird (I had added the URL to the Symbiostock settings, not realizing there was a whole bunch of stuff way down in the user profile that I needed to add).

As far as the the directory issue, when I set up my site (pre-Symbiostock) I was following the advice here about installing WordPress in a subdirectory

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/should-i-install-in-root-directory-or-subdirectory

You just set your site address to the root (WordPress Settings/General) so although all the files live below, people access it as if it were in the root. I don't want the Symbiostock Networking to use the /blog subdirectory but that's what it has picked up from something internal to WordPress and I can't edit that field. I think Leo needs to pick the Site Address not the WordPress Address field when setting the networking info for my site.

After I entered info in the User Profile as you showed me how to, I no longer get the error when updating the network info. It'd be nice if it said "fill out your user profile" versus what it did, but I assume that was the source of the problem...

I don't know if I have a symbiocard - how could I find that out (cascoly said he couldn't find one)?

4146
When I click that link it says page not found.  But when I click on your logo you show up under your main domain and not blog.  Set your site to http://www.digitalbristles.com/ and try again.

In the Settings-General for WordPress I have the site address as http://www.digitalbristles.com and the WordPress address as http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog. That's how you have your install of WP somewhere other than the root but have it behave as if it is in the root.

However in the Symbiostock network settings I can't type or paste into the field that says where my site is - it's apparently disallowed. Perhaps Leo needs to change which WordPress setting field he reads from?

My square logo URL is correct - I assume you can see this (I just copied and pasted from the Symbiostock field I entered)

http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Square-Site-Logo-128-Square.jpg

4147
I have tried to activate the network - and I tried again just now to see if I added some more info in the fields I have no idea about if it would work - but it fails (I think) with this message

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home5/digitdt6/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php on line 1039
Network info updated.

Image info info updated.

There are a bunch of fields to fill in and although they supposedly have help, I get an "oops" page if I click on them. The getting started just says slick on activate and have the logos - I've done that but I still (a) don't get my logo on the image pages, just the SS ladybird logo, (b) get the above error each time I try to update the network info (which someone else said I should do to get my logo to work) and (c) you tell me I don't have a network card - which I don't know anything about creating or checking on.

Can you tell I am clueless? I'm trying, but it's not easy.

I had a wordpress installation already, not in the root (digitalbristles.com/blog) and so that's where my symbiostock install went. I seem to remember something I read when I first set wordpress up that said it was bad to put it in the root directory.

The "My site" field in the networking tab of Symbiostock correctly says "http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog"

I posted about the error message yesterday in one of the threads about 2.6.0 bugs but it may not be a bug - I'm probably doing something wrong or missing something. Is there anywhere that tells you what needs to be put into the various fields of the networking tab?

How does one get or make a symbiocard.csv (I see one mentioned in the site search on http://symbiostock.info/about/)

4148
I'm not done uploading images and building the site yet, but thought I should see what sort of sites might be interested in networking with mine. You can see my portfolio at the other micro sites (SS and GL Stock have a pretty decent representation)

MSG name: jsnover
website: digital bristles
url: http://www.digitalbristles.com/
your photo topics: beaches (Maine, Caribbean, West Coast US), travel destinations (cities and countryside; mostly US but some Caribbean and England) lifestyle, home & family, Christmas, some business - a little bit of a lot of things. It's all colorful and bright though
what  you're looking for: Not really sure, but perhaps some geographic complements (Europe, South America, Asia) on similar subjects?

4149
Thanks Cathy. Truthfully, I don't understand the differences between HOME Page CTAs and HOME Page Simple!

When I looked at the example (demo) page for CleanTheme, it said "This is the HOME Page CTAs page template.  This  is the main body copy..."

So I made my home page use the HOME Page CTAs template just like the sample, but when I used the slider at the top - just like the sample - mine was half the width of the page, not like the sample. Even if I changed from 2 columns to 1, the Soliloquy slider stayed in the first column.

What I have now is using the HOME Page Simple template, but I'm concerned that there is something I'll be missing - something that's in the other template but not in this one. As I said, I have no idea what the differences are, but wanted to start with a home page similar to the sample but with my own logo, menu and images.

I do have Jetpack installed (I was using it before) and I didn't want Top Posts, so it's more a frustration that I can't follow the demo site directions for some reason I can't fathom. Possibly the demo site is wrong and it isn't using that template at all :)

4150
I am so confused...

I have CleanTheme 2.0 and Symbiostock 2.6.0

If I try to use the home page template HomePage CTAs that your example page says you can use to produce something looking like your example page..

http://www.symbiothemes.com/cleantheme/

I can't get the Solioquy slider or the latest images/featured images to span the full page width. I can do that if I switch to the "Default" template. I can change your template to 1 column and that still leaves me with the shrunken image displays in the left column only.

I've switched to Home Page Simple, which gets me a page-wide Sililoquy slider, but still the midget Latest and Featured Images. I switched to the non-slider versions of Latest Images & Featured Images and they span the whole page with Home Page Simple or Home Page CTAs

I thought that buying the template would make it easier to make pages that looked similar to yours, but I'm obviously missing something (and I know only the most basic things about Word Press). What am I missing?
