Sales are slow. But it just had my first 0.38 USD sale.  Whoopee.  :)

congratulations!  ;)

Finally, by redisintermediating, Yuri is regaining the most valuable part of the stock photography business:  the customer relationships.  Hes already been hard at work doing this, with 2,000 active photo buyers already in his records (50 have been beta-testing the site, buying 10 30 per day).  Now he has a substantially more lucrative destination to direct his promotional resources and leverage the fame hes built as the worlds top selling stock photographer.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Ranking factors microstock sites
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:03 »
a question that is popping up now, how much images do you guys think is needed in a stock portfolio to get a decent salary out of it.
of course quality is important, but i see some stock shooter having 10.000 images in their portfolio and also so a few with just like 800 and performing also very nice.

you have the answer already..

That wording is a bit iffy, let alone the spurious nature of the "exclusivity". All other MAJOR stock agencies? What about the minor ones? Is it that some places aren't willing or able to pull images whenever Yuri asks them to?

that might be a smaller problem, I believe the tons of agencies partners would be a lot harder, 5 working days.. if all agencies work as good as IS on the thinkstock migration I believe it will take more like 500 days  :D

Of course it's not polite, but it's a lot of fun. And besides, it won't stop Yuri from dropping in here next time he wants something, so no harm, no foul :)

sure! I remember a topic that I have oppened about a Yuri picture too and everybody basically ATE me alive :D

the picture in question was from the REAL most downloaded man with a DIESEL t-shirt ;D

Anyone got more "blooming nature" downloads yesterday? :-)

I had one, a pretty old one that actually has a sensor spot on it :D
It really gets my goat when people laugh about providing a sub-standard service to our customers. Selling images with hidden defects reflects badly on all of us.

I believe you are way pissed around Yuri and starting to be mean all around, you need to deal with that issue please.. regarding my picture it was done in 2009 where actually I didnt knew jack about sensor spots, only noticed it yesterday when I saw the sale, I believe that we should laugh about ourself if not we are just too serious.. for sure I will work around that picture and upload again, please dont go and tell Jon :)

New Sites - General / Re: RPD on iSignStock?
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:53 »
For 330$ pr year you can download 50 full resolution images pr week on iSignstock. Thats 2600 images for 330$ or 12.69 cent pr image which woukd leave the contributor with 3.8 cent after iSignstock has taken their 70% share...Well, we know that almost no buyers use the entire download quota, but this sure smells like a rotten deal for photographers.

Anyone care to share their RPD on iSignStock?

they dont give us that information, only totals

Newbie Discussion / Re: I'm new
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:37 »
welcome! I probably don't have the right to say "welcome" as I'm a relative newb to this site also. But even in this newbie forum a lot of the old dogs are lurking. There are some truly amazing, successful stock photogs here, and some very jaded ppl here. If you're not so green in stock you might fare ok.... I think the rest of the newbs hide. I myself am new to stock but am in my 4th decade (and I've birthed 3 children & tolerated one husband for 12 years) so I don't take **** from anyone.  enjoy :)

oh yeah  ;D

curious how "everything" happened in the last 48h..

1 - Yuri website/agency "leaked out" and oppened before time
2 - iStock raised exclusives pricing
3 - SS has a new logo

For example in the Czech Republic 1st May is not only Labour day but also The Day of Lovers, which is considered as a famous, traditional and non-commercial alternative to US import Valentine. It is a public holiday and a man has to kiss his woman under the blooming cherry tree :-) Anyone got more "blooming nature" downloads yesterday? :-)

I had one, a pretty old one that actually has a sensor spot on it :D

It's a special license a buyer purchases to use images in a "sensitive" nature i.e. medical, homelessness stuff like that.  My brain is drawing a blank to explain it better.

The SU license gets the contributor up to $70 in royalties.  Not sure what the $90 would fall under.  So far they're not telling us anything unless it's them testing things out?

Thanks for th explanation. I can understand the meaning behind sensitive use.

But for an illustration, I wouldnt think someone will buy a SU license... Confusing :)

Well my understanding is that sensitive use is just a part of a new license that SS is offering - it may include other things like better number of copies, etc. So when someone buys a picture of tea leaves they don't care about sensitive use aspect of the license, but may want some other terms that this license contains. Which really sucks for photographers with people in their portfolios - just because I don't want to allow my models to be used in some questionable campaigns, my other images - not containing people - can not be sold with this new license! This still doesn't make any sense to me - why couldn't they allow to opt-out just images with model releases attached to them?

you are right, SS should have an option to opt-in in pictures not containing MR's, doesnt look hard to implement I guess..

the logo looks great - a nice upgrade.

I played the video on their blog page and even though I closed the browser window that repetitious song is still playing.. hmmm.... subliminal messaging??

mine is blurred

actually I dont know a person that dont love photography

I don't love it. It's alright.  :P

me too if I am not behind it ;D

Anyone planning to buy shares?

I would not buy shares in any creative corp or service, waste of time. I once bought shares in one of the worlds most prominent AD-agencies, sold them six months later,  waste of time. When depression hits the globe, the"creative-world",  is the first one to bite the dust.

all world is crappy already (USA, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and many other) and contributors/agencies keep on collecting..

4169
Well, I guess this shows they're all *insult removed*.

eta: oops, sorry ;)

naughty boy, what have you said?

It looks like Formaccreative is not best pleased either;

"I am an unhappy buyer for sure, it is getting way too exspenive to buy here for us. I was just searching out some images for a project and was shocked at the price hike."

4$ a XS, how far will they go?

Lise Gagne (and a small fraction of other big players, but she's the biggest of all of them) on the other hand is doing what she loves, her photos show it. She shoots less lately (in the last couple of years or so), but she does shoot interesting things she enjoys, that chimpanzee businessman is brilliant (very stocky too) and then there are shoots that aren't as saleable (and I'm sure she knows it), but she shoots them anyway, because she enjoys the process of taking them. Then there are all those playful mustache photos etc. She started to really enjoy herself after becoming big, not being burdened if the new series are going to bring in a ton of money like the old did or not. It looks as though she doesn't really care about that (but also knowing at the same time her old series will still keep on bringing her lots of money) and just enjoys herself. That's love for photography! And I'd do exactly the same if I made just 10% of what she did.

You know, this is really very astute.  I don't follow Lise's port, so I didn't know what she'd been up to lately, but it's good to know she's finding a way to stay creative and enjoy what she's doing.

I was having almost this exact conversation with my husband the other night.  I was (of course) complaining about how lousy sales were in April, and how demoralizing it is to see the downward trends in sales and earnings.  The directions all the major sites seem to be going in do not inspire optimism.

My husband's response was - "So just shoot what you enjoy, that way it doesn't matter as much if you make the money.  At least you'll be having fun".  Brilliant!  This is exactly what you are describing that Lise has been doing.

Seems like if the industry continues in its current direction, those of us who are not factories will be well advised to go back to shooting what we enjoy, or else get out altogether.

I was never a Yuri fan but that is very unfair IMO.. I am sure Yuri loves photography, everybody keep on saying that stock aint art so I dont understand why people keep on saying Yuri is a factory or this or that.. how cannot he not love photography? sure the money makes us happy too but we cannot say that doing stock or only photographing our life aint an amazing thing, I have a blast every time I pick up my camera, certainly it is the coolest thing on earth, that and sushi ;D

actually I dont know a person that dont love photography, only women on the first second but after a few shoots they are all in love ;D (a few you look gorgeous help too)

He won't have to worry about overheads such as paying highly qualified reviewers...... he already has staff so he can redirect a few of them into marketing and site maintenance. The bigger question is: will he undercut the others to gain new business?  Will that drive prices down?

have you seen his website? his pricing is 2x the regular exclusive file or a photo+ at iStock

Yuri sells XS with 1 credit, on iStock XS is 1 credit.

sorry not following you.. thats the only price that matches.. all other are way up.. check yourself before talking..

actually IS bumped prices again lol 4 for a XS regular collection for exclusives..

^^^ your math is all wrong.

Are you going to say why or give us the correct 'math' perchance? No? Thought not.

I thought Dirkr's post was interesting and well thought out. Obviously the numbers are estimated but there's no doubt that 'cutting out the middleman' has huge potential for Yuri and probably only he has the scale of operation and the brand to take advantage.

Yup, the figures could be 50% out in either direction, but it is still a hell of an incentive to try to claw back a proportion of that commission.

As I said earlier, I don't believe anyone else has the corporate presence to have a chance of pulling off this trick and making it pay, but Yuri does. But if it turns the sites against him it could still go horribly wrong (maybe he has already cleared it with them).

I believe that it may only happen if he opens it for contributors, if not, its just his website, it shouldnt affect I guess but agencies we actually never know..
