iStockPhoto.com / Re: Why is iStockphoto tanking?
« on: October 31, 2012, 12:02 »
I understand.  Like so many things, we have to take some things on the belief that they are being forthright and truthful with us.  It's like the proverbial question of how do we know they are reporting all sales to us?  If we didn't trust them to report accurately, we probably wouldn't stick around.  They know that if they ever were actually caught being deliberately dishonest, it would likely be the end of the company.  Even the most diehard exclusive would likely bail under those circumstances, to say nothing of what buyers would do.

IS sales reporting has always confused me.  I've been going by the dollar amount at the bottom of the home page.  Whenever I request payout, this seems to be the value that is sent to my PayPal account.  However, when I look at my portfolio, the sales recorded by image download don't always agree with the value on the home page.  Sometimes it is higher and sometimes lower (more often than not lower).  I assume this has something to do with PP, but I don't know what or how to account for it.  Where am I going wrong here?

I don't do PP, so can't speak to that, but the figures are regularly a bit out of synch. Your balance at the bottom of the page update in real time (NOT PP). Your stats figures update at any old random time when they run the scripts.
Currently, and since early Sept, cash sales (i.e. not paid for in credits) don't show on your stats page, but do add to the balance at the bottom of the page.
They seem to feel no urgency in fixing this, or the other things they broke while introducing credit card sales.

I'm trying hard not to attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence, but the longer this goes on, the harder it gets.

Thanks.  So long as the one number is correct and I'm not losing any money at payout, that's the most important item.  Still, it would be nice if the reporting was a bit more accurate so I could see just where these sales were coming from.

Sandy played havoc on all businesses along the Atlantic coast this week.  I've only had one sale in NYC so far which is one more than I expected given the weather.  European sales and sales in the southern & western U.S. have held up, but with the loss of most Eastern U.S. sales there has been a noticeable slowdown on SS.  While I may not like it, I can completely understand what's going on and don't worry about it.  I've still have my highest sales month ever in terms of both dollars and quantity of sales and expect that to continue in the months to come as SS recovers from the storm.

I'm about evenly split between the 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8 IS, but went with the latter as it probably has just a touch more usage.

General Stock Discussion / Re: On-Line Archival Service

Thanks to both for responding.  Barry, I'd seen most of these before and unfortunately they don't meet my requirements.  Velocicarpo, Amazon Glacier looks interesting.  Something I need to look into closer.

Again, thanks to both.

General Stock Discussion / On-Line Archival Service
« on: October 22, 2012, 17:21 »
I asked this question over on the SS forum, but no one had any suggestions.

Does anyone know of an on-line archival service?  This is not the same as a back-up service, such as Carbonite, but true archival.  The difference is that with most back-up services, if you remove an image from your hard drive, it gets removed from the back-up site.  But with archival, it stays on their server regardless of whether you make changes or delete the image altogether.

At the moment my only option appears to be to buy a Blu-ray burner and start saving lots of discs, but I'd rather use an on-line service if they exist.

At what point will the other agencies wake up to SS's success and adapt their own business models in order to compete more effectively? Seems to me with their complex pricing architecture, inadequate search results and poor attitude to their contributors that they are slowly sleep-walking into oblivion.

That is something I have been pondering on. Good point. I cannot for the life of me figure out why SS is not being copied more. The only thing I can think of is that its just pure stubbornness and pride not willing to change or to accept you got it wrong. But at some point something's got to give. SS has many things right, and what they have right are the most important things; pricing structure, uploading process and the search.

That's called the "NIH" syndrome.  Been the downfall of more companies that I care to count.

There's a news post on the internet that he hit 833.9 mph.  That's quite a bit higher than the number that was being streamed as he fell (729 mph), but I didn't pick up where it came from (radar tracking?).  Any way you look at it, one gutsy guy.

Hi Barry,

Just tried logging in.  No problem although main page seemed kinda odd.  Just checking downloads and earnings and all seemed fine.  Did they change the page layout?  Had a helluva time locating the logoff link.  I thought it used to be by itself at the top of the page, but I had to go to a link under my name to find it.  At my age that could be normal (LOL), but .....?

Illustration - General / Re: Scans from old books/illustrations
« on: October 03, 2012, 20:01 »
I have several old magazines from the mid 1860's.  These contain numerous illustrations of the U.S. civil war and the movement of settlers traveling west, fighting Indians, etc.  I would love to photograph these illustrations and submit them as many would be considered historical.  However, as noted above, most RF agencies will no longer accept these, even though they are almost 150 years old and all copyrights have long since expired.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Log-in is quick and easy.  Click on the Dashboard tab and go have a cigarette.  Then take the wife out to dinner and a show.  Stop off for a nightcap on the way home.  When you get back, see if the Dashboard has come up yet or not.  If you're lucky, 50% of the time it will be up.

Lately new stuff seems to appear in port / be visible in searches pretty much immediately

Agree.  I had a batch approved this past week and had sales immediately after receiving the confirmation e-mail.

When to upload is a crap shoot and I don't think we get the new-image boost we used to.  The images appear to be visible relatively quickly and if they are immediately relevant they will sell right away.  Otherwise, if they have decent keywords they'll work their way into the system on their own time.

Just uploaded some images about an hour ago via FTP.  They are already in the BS files, have been edited and are now pending review.  Hope it stays this way.  Thanks Boris.

How can you be any worse than abysmal?  The only agencies doing worse for me are GL and DP.  And IS is giving them a run for their money in the ongoing race to the bottom.  Everyone else is doing fine and SS is on track for a BME in both quantity and dollars.

I had the same problem with FTP yesterday/today.  I uploaded images early yesterday using Filezilla.  They seemed to upload fine and I could see them in the BS FTP file on Filezilla (the right-hand panel labeled "remote site").  This afternoon when I logged on to BS to complete the upload, nothing had come through.  I went back and looked at the FTP file on Filezilla and the images were still there.  They had not moved from the BS receiving file to where they could be edited.  I deleted them from the receiving file (sorry I don't know the proper name for this) and reloaded them manually.  They went through just fine that way.

Lighting / Re: Flash compatibility?
« on: September 05, 2012, 20:02 »
I've noticed on my 5D II that the sync speed is slower when using wireless or optical triggers.  Sometimes I can get away with 1/200 but more often than not I have to go to 1/160 to have everything flash while the shutter is open.  Full sync speed is fine for my 550EX when attached to the camera.  But when triggering multiple Flashpoint monolights, either optically or wireless, I have to reduce the shutter speed.

Almost impossible to read the Recent Topics list.  Needs font size, bold, or separator chart bars or something to be able to pick titles off of the page much more easily.

Agree.  Plus the ones I haven't read aren't bolded anymore to separate them from the ones I've already visited.

Looks like that's fixed, at least on my views.

If you Google "how to make a water splash photograph" a ton of tutorials pop up.  Some good, others poor.  Some just images to give you ideas or to discourage you by showing how good existing images already are.   ;D

« on: August 19, 2012, 13:56 »
Here's a small sample of recent sales in August.  Credit sales have been running about twice the volume of subscription sales.

Subscription - 5 for $0.35 each, all maximum
9 credits - $1.96   extra large
7 credits - $1.62   medium
15 credits - $5.56 large
16 credits - $6.35 medium
9 credits - $3.60   extra small
5 credits - $1.50   extra small
13 credits - $4.50 maximum
6 credits - $2.50   small
9 credits - $3.64   small

All the credits are marked 2010, although I don't really know what that means.  Small port of only 327 images.

edit - just noticed I left off the sizes.

An interesting case.  Many of our own model releases contain similar language.  This is probably something we need to keep a close eye on.

Veer / Re: Images online, no views?
« on: August 05, 2012, 16:49 »
Same here.  Seems to take forever to start getting views.  Actually I'm pretty much disappointed with Veer.  They started out great and I hit payout the first month.  But since then it's like they dropped off the surface of the planet.  I know my port is relatively small, but after the first flurry of activity I expected more.  I've been uploading to increase the port size, but as noted, if these don't get views (and hopefully subsequent downloads) it doesn't do a whole lot of good.
