It's funny how compassionate we are when we are defrauded by a lady, isn't it?
But having work in sales , I have learn not to be so compassionate, as many professional shoplifters are "female"; "grandmothers", etc. Even had one professional scammer who emailed me for tuition claiming to be a "lady" from Geneva, only to call me sounding like a nigerian male from Toronto.

Lately we have found crooks from police constable growing weed in their basement, to grandmothers running some shady operations. That's why they are so successful, they know the best way to pull the wool over our eyes.

congrats, it must surely be sweet revenge for you. I wonder if you could find someone who knows how to trace the origin of the thief and report them to the IP,etc.

An associate of mine used to work as  OSP Consultant and Team Lead and QA Training,  and in casual conversation once told me how they managed to trace out some obsessed pervert stalker who kept preying and harassing some of the top players.
They were able to find the bloke and got him banned from the network.
It would be a more satisfying double revenge if you could get this thief exposed and make it an example to dissuade potential copycats.

Whatever the case, I am happy for you. I think most internet fraud thrive on the assumption that not everyone can retain a lawyer, or know someone who can help. However, these days with fraud getting more prevalent, I notice that there are more recourse , such as  hackers networks sprouting to give the abusers a good run for their money. There are some very brainy hackers out there who would do this for free, as they get tired of other hackers giving them a bad name.

A bit OT here, but, I like to say Hooray to you.

Like Freedom, on the other thread,  all my dls are older images, most only subs with few cents . Not sure if this has anything to do with the summer slowdown, although Achilles said no slowdown at all . I never really bothered to ask. More constructive by saving my breath and upload elsewhere to Veer, Fotolia, Bigstock, even Canstock,  123RF

Maybe DT caught the StockXpert virus. arghhh !

June was a very good month for me, but now the sales have taken a break again. But what worries me more is my AR, which is going down the drain. Are your ARs the same as ever, or is Attila doing a summer job on DT?

Atilla ? arghhhh !
I stopped uploading new works to DT since that time when everyone was complaining about no views with their new approvals. I also disabled the most recent ones out of frustration.
Are you getting slammed dunked on your AR that much to notice a diff?
If Atilla is there, I think I'll pass, and leave DT out of my list until november. I don't want to start cussing and swearing again. I stopped going to confession, ha!ha!

You guys are all over the board in terms of opinions :)

From some not caring about uploading everywhere (I've done it, and I love not having to do it) to guys who hate iStock's upload process so much that they'd rather upload everywhere instead.

Which isn't a bad thing , ichiro17, we can't all think alike. That's the beauty of the forum, to evoke opinions and move mountains (hopefully).

Back to you, what 's your take after going exclusive. Are you earning more, less, same, ??? as before being independent all over the board?
Care to share your actual data?   Wish you well as usual , as I am one of those who is sitting on the fence, for now !

Good 2 know you reached payout. I'm almost there too, but * , even the subs have dried up for me.
One question for you, astro:
Why are you not cashing out? If something screwy happens (which I hope not, as I like StockXpert to revamp), you could wait forever to get paid. No? ???

I'm not cashing out, because I could get another $40 in sales between now and when StockXpert sales dry completely up.  If I had cashed out, I would be in the dreaded position of waiting and waiting for the final $10 in sales that never comes.

It would be different is StockXpert was a ma and pa outfit, deeply in debt and being forced out of business by creditors.  But I don't think Getty would deny its contributors payment once payment level is reached.

Very smart. I must remember that, as I am almost close to payout . Like you, I will gather as much as I can while the harvesting lasts. Thanks for the hint. Congratualtions again!

It'll be interesting to see how JIU/PC customers react when those 3M images suddenly disappear even if they do get 1M IS images to replace them.

gostwyck, I get the feeling the buyers already grabbed all they wanted when the writing was on the wall . That sort of explained why many of us had our 3 best months , each group staggering with more subs downloads than ever before, than dead after that. Then another group is now having the same good 3 running months of sub downloads.
So maybe, the buyers are on the fly grabbing all they can from everyone before the hammer falls.
Just an educated guess.

The best selling image threads will most likely have the opposite effect. Early on I participated in these kinds of threads. The second time that my image was blatantly copied, I learned my lesson.

There are people watching those threads, but they are not buyers.

You said it!  Same experience here and lesson learned the hard way...

That's something to ponder.

I don't feel I have a port worth copying, unlike many of you here with a large port and lots of good sellers. There was a time when I was quite active in the blog and felt this way. Then I tried to convince myself it's unfounded.

Still, I am now inclined to think that it does diminish your earning potential to be too popular.
I think someone like Sean (sjlocke) had once mentioned that too.

I'm still uploading, for now.

My sales were good there before association with Photos & Jupiter.  After that merger, my StockXpert sales all but stopped, but the subscription sale were fairly strong.  Had a good spring with them, but have seen some slowdown since the whole getty/rape thing.  Since it's been a LONG time since I"ve had an actual StockXpert sale, I expect the site to dry up once their images are removed from the photos & jupiter sites.

I just passed payout threshold yesterday, to I'm breathing a little easier.  I won't cashout now -- will wait and see what happens after the "split" -- but at least I know I won't be stock with $48 in my account waiting and waiting and waiting for sales that don't come to push me over the threshold  ;)

Good 2 know you reached payout. I'm almost there too, but * , even the subs have dried up for me.

Adobe Stock / Re: 100% Photo rejection - ouch
« on: July 08, 2009, 09:18 »
I guess you dind't read my comments.  I'm not complaining about getting rejected, nor have I had 100% rejected...(that was a different poster).  I'm saying that they do NOT provide a reason WHY it's rejected.  I belong to four other sites, all of which have rejected photos I've taken, but they provide a reason why, so I can possibly correct it and resubmit it, and/or improve my photography.

Correct, I was speaking in general terms as well, rather than answer to each comments individually. I contribute to those other sites you mentioned too, and yes, although I agree that some sites, incl more recently Veer Marketplace, give you an almost direct explanation to assist in re-submit.
While others are not so specific.

My point is, after a while you more or less know deep down your image MIGHT be rejected because of a certain thing. I find that nowadays after conscientiously trying to understand how each site display certain preference, dislike, ... to my images. Sometimes, you just submit the image anyway, to see if your inkling is correct. Most times Fotolia will in fact reject me on that image.

In other words, there are certain likely chances that you do get rejections, and there are other instances you know they will be approved. It comes with paying more attention to the rejections.

If I did not answer your question, it's because I wasn't. I was more or less trying to answer Bob's question, since this is his topic ;)

462
vonkara  , agree.  It may get you more views, not more dls. I doubt if buyers check those posts.

Adobe Stock / Re: 100% Photo rejection - ouch
« on: July 08, 2009, 08:29 »
I just had a large bunch of photos rejected as well.  I certainly can live with the rejection, if they would at least tell me what the problem is.  Instead, the response is, ""Your photograph did not reach our desired level of aesthetic quality".

A while back, their response was also absurd, listing everything that could be wrong:

The image contains one or more technical problems:

Blurry or out of focus
Over/Under exposure
Framing problem
Over or under saturated colors
Problems with contrast
Noise or Pixelation
Quality of routing
Interpolation problem

Why can't they do what most other sites do and list the specific problem(s) with the photos?

This has already been overstated.
Rejection reasons, even as vague or canned as such you mentioned , are not really that mysterious, if you only practise a little more objectivity and lay aside your deflated ego of getting 100% rejection, or whatever.
To keep reeling over how vague the rejection reasons are is trendy and cool, but it really does nothing constructive to improve your photography , if you are that serious about working with Fotolia.

Bob Keenan has shown he was asking for inputs and he took what was provided here objectively. You can do the same too, if you want to succeed in getting more approvals. If not, as many experienced and straight shooting commentors said, then go find another site that is easy to get approval. If all you want is lots of approvals there is a whole list on the right of this forum to choose from.

Personally, I find Fotolia very picky and strict. Istock too, and all for a good reason. They want to be able to sell what they approve.  Once I convinced myself of this , I more or less get the inkling why my images would subsequently be rejected. After studying what the editors are looking for, it's really not difficult to get a fair amount approved regularly. You have to make an effort to edit your work critically and objectively.

It won't be found simply to repeat this rant.

Like rene! I was once young and stupid and thought it was sooo cooool to see my images given away for free so my friends all think I was a prooofessional.
Now I am not sooo young, and not quite sooo stupid. Like rene, I also stop trusting site moderators. Oh I also stopped believing in the tooth fairy   :D  :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Active Forum = Active Sales?
« on: July 07, 2009, 18:33 »
I used to wonder on this too. It appears to be that the active blogger and forum posters make more sales, but I don't think that is so. You make more contacts and you might get a lot more looksee to your port but does that transform into more sales, I hirely doubt that. Buyers don't go reading what you write in blogs and forum, at least I don't think so.
So post this to buyers. Hey buyers, dya really give a hoot ? lol

I would disagree about reaching payout faster. Rate of payout is determined by a few factors like portfolio size, quality of the work, agency customer base, ect. I see regular payout each month at many of my big sites, and the little ones are getting very close to monthly payout as well, so its really a non issue for serious non-exclusive submitters. As for having your stuff at only one place, well, like I said in my other post, I have data suggesting you won't always win at the same agencies every time.

Interesting. CHeers cardmaverick. I wonder if anyone has a different opinion. It's good to know, tho!

I am sorry I did not answer you yet.
I probably missed your question dealing with other angry questions kindly asked by my fellow colleagues from competing agencies who run multiple personalities here at MSG.
[/quote]

So what's it to you if there are indeed multiple personalities representing competiting agencies?
In the past it is not uncommon for representatives of another site to join in the discussion of another site, and no one made a stink about it.
If you prefer some kind of censorship, I don't think this forum is the right place for you. You might try it on your own site's forum, though, as that would not be any of my business. However, right here on Tyler's forum, it is .

Newbie Discussion / Re: Basic beginers camera?
« on: July 07, 2009, 14:05 »
The sensor is smaller and "Crops" the image. If there's an advantage to the crop sensor, it's that you are getting the image from the center of the lens and won't get aberrations or soft edges as much as a full frame image.

What changes is the field of view, which appears as if it was a longer lens. You do not get more lens from a crop camera than a full frame, you get the identical image! It's just that you lost 60% of the edges.

If that doesn't explain it, imagine: you take a picture of a basketball on your crop camera and the ball is 1cm wide on the sensor. You take a picture with the same lens, same distance, same everything, on a full frame camera and the ball is still 1 cm on the sensor.

Crop cameras do not bring you closer to anything, it's a visual perception because the field of view is narrow.

Good point racephoto. I never thought of it that way, but you are right.
Also re aberration and edge vignette , barrel, pincushion... comparing a full sensor to a crop sensor, this no doubt emphasizes the need for more superior lens for a full sensor camera, isn't it?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Exclusivity, yes or no?
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:59 »
Being non-exclusive, at 13 sites, I have to say I like it better. You have to keep in mind that when you are only on one site, you DON'T get to see the market as a whole very well. You'll never know if your images could do better elsewhere because you do not have a "birds eye" view of the market that non-exclusives do.

Case in point, I uploaded one of my recent shoots to all my sites, I was expecting SS to bring in the majority of its gross sales, as similar shoots had done. I was dead wrong. As I tracked sales, I found it wound up being SX that made the shoot really profitable. Had I only been on SS, I would have a loss on my hands.

Such are the benefits of non-exclusiveness.

Sorry hawk_eye, a bit of a sidetrack here, but related.
cardmaverick, I think someone has already pointed out yet another good point of exclusiveness. That being , if you have dulpicity over 5, 15 sites, you reach payout a lot later, if not even reaching payout on many ie. Crestock, because they sell little. IS, DT, because of their high payout point.
Being exclusive means a buyer has to come to one place to get your images, which also mean your sales would reach payout sooner, instead of selling 1 at Crestock, 3 at Dt, 5 at StockXpert,etc.. and not seeing a payout cheque too regularly.
This alone makes exclusiveness attractive to me. However I don't see it happening that soon as there isn't one site I am crazy over. Maybe that will change with Veer Marketplace.

A timely appropriate question hawk-eye!
Let's see.
Um, if I had invested my time with IStock and have done well there , and I qualify to contribute to Vetta? It's a wholehearted YES.
If , otoh, I am independent, which I am. I would keep my options open with Veer Marketplace, and see which of the two takes off.
Vetta is obviously more rewarding, so I would wish it succeeds, even though I am not exclusive.
That being said, I keep an eye to see which of the Big 6 will bring out their own version of premium stock to stop the rest of us from joining Getty. Not that I am such a big hurry to join IS. But as Sean pointed out aptly, those who hung around faithfully with IS should by now deserve to reap the rewards of Vetta.

Objective opinion. Hey, and welcome to MSG...  ;)

Agencies with PPD sales on first place have the future...
Even "king of subscriptions" like SS knows that... "on demand" is a first step forward...
Will be big migration of contributors in future to PPD and midstocks...
Also IS knows that, Vetta is first step...

WHo was it that said "absence of risk" or "not being threatened", in once of the comments. Was it you, borg? Anyway, that poster is right in one sense.
If it eventually comes to us making next to nothing and 35 cents mostly. We really have no risk or no threat to losing too much if we decide to make that "big migration to PPD and midstocks.."
The odds to earn a lot more with another experience site like Veer or IS because of their Corbis or Getty enveloping influence far outweigh the necessity to stay with the micro sites choosing to sell more and more images at sub-level prices.
Not sure if I put it clear enough to show what I mean. I hope what I've written here made sense.

Maybe those ex-IS execs are really double agents, trying to get contributors disgusted enough that we all decide to become IS exclusives?

rofl, KB you made  my day. Actually, I wouldn't mind if you're right. A back door pass to IStock Exclusive.
Seriously, hell will freeze over before that happens ROFL.

meanwhile, so long as Fotolia sell enough for me , i won't make too much of a scene here  :D

Fotolia monitors independent forums closely and some high-profile contributors have been deleted their port because they spitted out (justified) critique on them. They censor their own forums and they can't stand any critique outside of them. So better don't make a scene unless you're anonymous. Personally I don't have much to say against them. They sell OK but I would never upload video to them after this move.

I have posted the same criticism on the Fotolia Forum (the German one). I have done so before and until now have not been banned from their forum (nor has my port been deleted).

If they are not willing to sell my work while I openly state my opinion, it is their choice. But that will never stop me from writing what I want.

I think dirkr is right. Fotolia is not some two bit stock agency with over-zealous moderators who will get furiously over-reactive simply because you voiced your opinion that may be not so agreeable to your own ideas. Constructive criticism is healthy. I would not want to associate with an agency which expects me to agree with everything they say. So long as we refrain from calling each other some filthy names, I think there is always a place for free speech and opinionated contributors. Oh, correction, I should say, there SHOULD be a place for ...   That's why we call it a forum. If not, you may as well change the word and replace it with something like, " Woo Hoo, I like everything you do !
But if I only had a brain, I could surely give you my honest opinion"  8)
... or perchance, one word like ZOMBIE-ZONE  ;)

What Pixelbytes said is correct. If you have too much of a set, it's best not to upload all of it at once. Maybe 2 or 3 at the most.
Quickly looking at your rejected images, I felt they were too much of the same type of images. This is exactly what Pixelbytes is referring.
As for the reason, my guess (and it's a BIG guess) is that you rely heavily on a color tint and all very abstract. Maybe you might try cc them to more neutrality, and give it more variations in color tonality. Give it more dynamics, with highlight and shadow, to give the glass more luminence. Just a thought.
