I would like to see greater control over the time period. I would want to compare months (rather than just weeks) and also compare one month to the same month of the previous year.

I would also like to see stats around keywords searched on for each file. How did the client find the image, what keyword brought them there.

Nice start.... but, it really is very, very basic at the moment and wouldn't really gain much interest compared to the FT data. That data can be downloaded and used for my accounting whereas the AS stats at this point don't come close to being able to do that.

Adobe Stock / Re: Poor $ week on fotolia
« on: May 24, 2018, 12:56 »

No, this is not true. All accepted files uploaded to Fotolia are automatically online at Adobe Stock and all content uploaded via Adobe Stock that is approved is automatically online at Fotolia.

Why did we sync then?

All new contributors only have the option to use the contributor portal. While it still has a long way to go, the majority of our engineering resources directed at the contributor experience are pointed at the contributor portal. It's entirely up to you which UI you prefer but as time goes on the Adobe Stock Contributor Portal is getting more intuitive and easier to use.

It's good to sync so you can determine for yourself which option is better. If you prefer Fotolia then no harm in syncing and sticking with Fotolia.

-Mat

Much prefer the Adobe Portal for uploading & submitting but still use Fotolia for data for my accounts etc.

I'd prefer it if Adobe allowed both portals to run alongside each other without trying to push customers over to Adobe Stock when they search for or, use a FT bookmark. Or, if Adobe take on FT's credit system so to avoid the drop in earnings from missing out on those larger credit sales.... could you just flick a switch Matt and implement that  ;D

my may sales incredibly down on fotolia, my weekly rank constantly down, almost 50% down in two weeks, this situation is very frustrating...

I am following this thread with interest. I'm seeing growth in many accounts but would like to understand why some of you are not.

@Madman will you answer the following questions for me please?

How many files are in your account?
How long has it been since you have submitted new content?
When you most recently submitted new content, how many files did you submit?
Have you synced your Fotolia account with Adobe Stock yet?
If not, why not?

Thanks,

Mat

Some input from myself. Sales down a bit, a good month is often followed by a bad month and the total of the 1st four months 2018 is within $40 of 2017. Approx 0.7% difference. Average rolling 7 days sales volume rarely seems to change at the moment, it used to vary but over the last 1-2 months it seems constant. Weekly rank is down by 150 or so.... a third basically.

10,500 files,
upload 200-400 a month at the moment
Account synced

Edit. Sales volume hasn't dropped as much as $'s .... my gut feeling is that a lot of it is down to the re-direct away from the Fotolia website where there is a great chance of larger $ credit sales compared to those at Adobe Stock.

I usually find "Facts" emphasised in capitals to be anything but. The facts I rely on are the quarterly audited reports that SS publish these seem to show SS are pretty static. The success or otherwise of SS does not directly relate to the income of individual contributors.

Yeah, that's what freaked the investors. Little to no increase in volume after SS targets / hopes wanted a reasonable increase. I think SS acknowledge that they'd like to do better, and probably will, but investors were a little shaken and the share price fell. Next quarter will be interesting.

My country does have tax treaty with US and every other agency doesn't have a problem with that. Only VB has. Now go figure.

Have you renewed the W-8BEN? They usually require you to fill it out again each year and I know one time there was a bug that reset the W-8BEN so you had to fill it out again.

The W-8BEN works fine for me at VB and there are no taxes withheld.

Tried it twice already. Anyway, I gave up on this agency because of low sales too.

Have you tried asking them? I've always had a quick response from them when I've had a problem/query.

After completing my tax form I didn't have any funds withheld. The first sale did as it was soon after I started uploading but once they approved the form, they corrected the amount so nothing was withheld.

« on: May 16, 2018, 01:35 »

A good theory, except I didn't say anything about "numerous returns".  I think I've had maybe 2 over the years.

Good lord, has my reading comprehension gone to pot? I've had considerably more than that. I don't understand what leads you to your theory about them "renting" out images via refunds if you're not suffering from returns yourself.

While refunds are annoying, sometimes they pop back a couple of days later at the same price, sometimes for a little more/less. It can be down to the wording of the agreement. If the licence grants a years use from X date but the date changes, they they will cancel, refund and then re-licence again for the same T&C's with the new date.

I've never had a Alamy refund that wasn't resold with a different license, the day after the refund.

I've had a couple but nothing enough to lose sleep over.... mostly, they return with different license conditions.

Hi everyone, new here.

I've been selling 99% Video over the last three years and have kept records over the time of the sales and have noticed a trend with Adobe which has got me worried that they're penalising me for withdrawing funds.

When Adobe is doing well for me, I'll see on average between 2-7 video sales per week and it's can be one of my better performing agencies, but I've noticed that after withdrawing funds the following 3-5 weeks have little to no sales. My biggest withdrawal from Adobe was at the beginning of April and since then I've had a whopping 1.20 in sales (a couple of photos).

Does anyone else keep track of when they withdraw and notice any decline in sales? When this has happened in the past, the charts do show that the sales pick back up, but it feels like something is happening to my footage rankings.

Nope, makes no difference. I take 1000+ a month and it has zero impact on earnings. To be honest, the volume of sales you seem to be getting wouldn't allow you to draw any conclusions one way or the other. If a $50 sale has major impact on your monthly earnings then you will experience wild swings from + to -. Give it a bit, sure it will turn good again.

They do take releases from Easy Release, in fact, they even recommend it.

I had a few issues a little while back and reminded them of this and they looked into the matter as the standard MR not acceptable is not really helpful. It turns out there are a few things you must ensure now.

1. Model must have full name and DoB filled in correctly. No initials full names only (inc middle names)
2. MR must be witnessed. No initials full names only (inc middle names)

For me it was the witness middle name as an initial that was causing the problem. Hopefully this may help you out. If you've done all this, contact support and ask them why they are refusing a MR from software they recommend.

Here's a list of MR they accept, inc Easy Release

we wrote to SS and this is what they replied:

Over the past few years, video has become an increasingly powerful tool for online advertising. To meet this growing demand, we are offering footage clips to select online platforms for limited use at special rates.

While at times you may see that your earnings-per-clip is lower, these clips are for web or mobile application only. They can only be streamed; downloading and broadcast usage isn't permitted. This restriction has been designed to protect your earnings and give you an extra chance to make money.

We got a single sale a few days ago with $1.50 for a clip.

Ignore that "Can't be downloaded" bit....  See the two quotes from SS blog and Wix user guide for Shutterstock Footage!

Shutterstock Says

For instance, users of these platforms do not have the ability to download these files or use them for any other platform or in any other place, and often only leverage a few seconds of a clip for a mobile optimized experience.

They Say

Where can I use a Shutterstock video?
Once you buy a Shutterstock video, you can use it on any site in the same Wix account. You can also download the video and use it on another Wix site or Wix account. The video is not sent to you via email or a download file. If you would like to download the video to your computer, click here.

They are "Representing our interests by expanding the footage marketplace"
https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/contributor-footage-value-expanding-marketplace

We're screwed.

Maybe thats the new way of saying, we have some exciting news 😂

462
I have never had any sales below $16 at SS and actually a good deal of very high priced ones (even today).
Very, very happy with them

Ok.... The $1.50 sales are real https://forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/93927-150-video-sale/?page=3

And as this is an experimental scheme at the moment so you may not see many yourself now but if they go unchallenged, you will no doubt be wishing you voiced you discontent at the time when we could do something about it. Just saying!

I for one make quite a few hundred a month from video alone (individual sales of over $120) and would like to continue to do so.... these schemes if not managed right could bring an end to those days. They say the clients can't download and only play clips of the footage..... yet, on the website it tells their clients they can and provides instructions on how to do so! Cheap full Rez downloads and no way of knowing how many copies are being made / distributed.

463
Deactivated all footage last night after yet another $1.50 sale. They are supposed to be getting back to me and asked me to stop deleting files but as they couldn't be arsed to keeping me updated after a week, I deactivated my footage files from within account settings. I'll only reactivate them once they come back with answers and options to the issues I've raised. I've had half a dozen of these sales in the last week. It would take over 200 of these per month to match previous months sales

Seriously, I'd strongly advise to deactivate to give them the message it isn't acceptable and, this way it gives you an easy way to restore your files should they listen.

Send Jon your thoughts about the $1.50 Footage sales to his Tweet - https://twitter.com/jonoringer/status/946157483831148545 Asking for ideas about customer / contributor functionality.... i.e. No more $1.50 and Opt outs would be a good start :-)

What are the 'limitations' ?

They havent said.... theyve been all words no substance. Im waiting on a reply from them again. Ive had a few emails with them so far. It seems like the right time to kick up a fuss before it becomes a regular package!!!

SS - Not too bad not as strong as last month which was a BME (1st one in 12 months)

IS - Counter seems good, last month was good

FT/Adobe - Pants. Every time my 7 day rolling sales figure reaches 178, sales stop and don't return until it drops below that figure. Been like that for 4 weeks now!

123 & DP both improving but not quite in the $100's yet

In the last week i got 2 video sales (clip pack) for $1.50 each. Anyone got this or knows what is going on?

I've had 4 in the last 10 days. Not amused and I've a case with SS as they've been told I'm removing all footage if no opt-out appears or, confirmation the client only gets the smallest of small sizes. They've asked me to stop deleting files and wait as they deal with the matter.

Basically, it's a new package for clients buying high volume of content but with strict limitations. My concerns are that a) They can't enforce the limitations and b) the client receives full resolution and we just have to trust them.

I strongly suggest you make your voice heard, on the forum and in writing via email.

General Stock Discussion / Re: iStock is "stealing" my videos
« on: April 27, 2018, 07:41 »
Final customer really does not care if product was made with hogh-end or lower-end equipment. The only criteria is "does this product fit my needs?" and "can i afford it?". It might sound cruel (and at some points - it is), however, that's how it works.
I myself  bake bread for example. And when i go to store and buy flour, i really do not care if this wheat was grown, cut, and put on the shelf using most sophisticated John Deere agricultural machinery, and Mercedes trucks from fields to stores.
I only care about quality. I guess i tried all of these, and have few favorites. - which fits my needs in quality-price relation.
From the other hand, yes, of course, selling clips at less than a dollar for author is nothing but humiliation and heavy exploitation, and underpaying hard work. However, i'm always trying to see bigger picture - so, for example - these customers which buy clip for peanuts - might be the same customer which paid just one your clip at price point enough for buying one piece of equipment etc.. -so, i look at things from that point of view - total downloads/total $ rate - and i might be o.k. with it, or if in total i was not - i would delete account and save myself from frustration.

The quality of equipment (camera) you use in Photography / footage will determine the quality of the product. The camera actually produces (grows) the image whereas the Tractor does not grow the crop it is merely processing/transporting it.... the soil produces the crop (and weather of course).

The quality of the field / soil would be the same as the quality of the camera..... both produce the product and without it, the product would exist. The crop would exist if there were no tractors.... you'd just not process it or transport it. Same as the camera can take the image but without the Software or the internet, you'd still have the product but no way to process or transport it.

Clients should care greatly what camera is used.....poor quality going into the software will result in crap coming out. Try and recover highlights / shadows from an Osmo (which is a great cam) compared to a Sony A7riii or a Panasonic GH5 etc... So yes, equipment does matter, a lot!

I know from baking bread, if the flour is poor quality it doesn't have the strength to produce a decent loaf..... try using flour that has come from poor soil in poor growing conditions..... I'd imagine you'd not go back and buy their product again eh!

I have the feeling that their re branding from Videoblock to Storyblock has been a total disaster, not surprising.
They had managed to get a decent position on the extremely difficult video market and they lost their name for the sake of running behind a media that is way overcrowded (photo)..

Fully agree. That must have been one of the most idiotic moves ever. Just, why? Oh, why... Why, indeed...  :)

Not only is a name change a terrible idea after being successful - changing it to a terrible name like Storyblocks is even more terrible. I still won't call it Storyblocks. It just sounds silly. In a bad way.

The other problem was picking a name that was already in use by another company producing video content for education / learning market .... https://www.storyblocks.org

This was always going to cause some confusion and a new business name should never be close to that of another company. I did mention this to them at the time but no response.... probably hoped for the best.

« on: April 17, 2018, 08:17 »
I don't think I have had a "good" SOD in over a year. Usually they are about 2x subs, but plenty are at sub rates and almost all are below the on demand rate.

They are there still..... had a coulple of close to $100 sales last month and one for $120 this morning. Just not as frequent as I'd like :-)

To early to say. Not that bad but, remember that last month was the last month of the financial year. A lot of companies go on a bit of a spending spree before the end to use up remaining budget then stop the following month until new budgets are announced etc.

March was a BME for SS, strong at FT & Alamy.... just waiting on IS who've been doing well this year anyway.

Shutterstock.com / Re: New SS interface
« on: April 06, 2018, 01:53 »
I disagree with deleting 2years old files... in our case, a lot of first sales of videos come from old files 2+ years. Which is funny.

Yeah, deleting 2yr+ files would only benefit people who'd been in the business for less than 2 years. A lot of my sales are well over 2yrs old. Some of my best sellers are closer to 5 years old and still sell today.

In fact, when they want to freshen things up, a lot of agencies will bring some of the older not seen/bought images forward for a 2nd chance, given how easy it is to miss them the 1st time. This has meant previous 0's have now become big sellers.

I guess if you don't submit much then the chance of new best sellers when they switch stuff around is a lot less but that doesn't mean they should try to create rules to favour those that don't submit as much.

Good month. Better in the 1st two thirds of the month.... a little quieter over the last week. Seen one day over $200 with a good helping of video sales throughout the month alongside EL's and rather health SODs. SS are just in front of FT for a change, but only by $40 so tiny % diff overall.

I haven't noticed any problems, about 40 sales this year so far.... double figures sales this month so far.
