There is a great section on "selecting your images" which should give us all something to think about in terms of what makes a great photograph: http://www.tpoty.com/awards/selectingSteve

Funnily enough, these past 3 days have been good for me on SS. Only one enhanced (for $20) but three singles for $27, $60 and $75.

The crazy thing with all this is that everything around us has been designed by someone and so they own the rights to it. All the agencies are trying to do is to minimize the chance of a problem and so brands with a well known desire to control their publicity are weeded out, the artisan maker of a rug is so unlikely to complain about the use of their image that they will leave them in. Whatever the law actually says about these things is secondary to the desire of the agencies to protect themselves against the smallest risk.

My best seller is a cat. $2560 on Shutterstock and just $2.91 on BigStock. Go figure... The power of getting onto the first page in the search results I guess. Steve

Great shots and interesting to hear about why they are successful!

It seems pretty slow to load any new page for me.

I saw the post from the contributor about falling sales at Adobe so I thought I would plot my results. I have been seeing a steady increase from Adobe but this graph really shows it: The rest of the analysis is on my blog as usual: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2017/05/experience-adobe-stock/I like the steady sales of what I think of as some of my better images, and I also like the way new files can been seen and picked up by buyers - much better than the experience on Shutterstock where if you miss being seen in the first few days, you might as well not exist! Whatever Adobe Stock are doing - keep it up! Steve

Pretty average month for me. I've published my normal blog post about earnings and done a comparison month by month that shows consistency over the past 4 years, which would sound good if I hadn't increased my portfolio by perhaps 50% over that time! http://www.backyardsilver.com/2017/05/stock-photo-earnings-april-2017/Steve

Remember that you have decoded the video stream to get it into your editing software (assuming you aren't just directly clipping the start and end points which might not need any re-coding). So you have already got rid of the H264 codec at that point. If you ever try to save the file directly from your editing program as an uncompressed file, you will see that it is many times as large as you are currently seeing. So you need to choose a codec to compress it again for uploading and many agencies seem to prefer PhotoJpeg that ends up with a larger file size than H264. So the comparison you need to make is whether your PhotoJpeg file is "better" than a file that uses H264 for the final output. The agencies seem to think so.
Hope that is clearer.

Nope - that sounds right to me. Your original file will probably be encoded with H264 which is much better at reducing file size. With PhotoJpeg, there is much less compression (and presumably artifacts) although there is a long thread somewhere about that!
You could reduce the quality setting of your PhotoJpegs a bit - I use 85 which seems to be acceptable at all the main agencies.

Thanks Angela. My tax person is just working on mine, but it is nice to get it right. Of course, this 1099 reports a different income that I had estimated and I also have an amended 1042-S that reflects a bit of income against which they withheld federal tax!

I've been getting this pop up with the captcha multiple times as well. It seems like the program uploads to Pond5 OK, but while waiting for submit, I get these popups and have to fill in the captcha quiz several times

From your Blog post: "As I mentioned a week or so back, Microstockr Pro now shows you the images that sold day by day on iStock once they have released the sales stats on the 20th of each month, so it is great for seeing what sold in detail."
I have Microstockr Pro ... where you get ESP earnings report for march? I can not see what sold in detail too. Hmmm I thought I was reasonable clear - the second part of the sentence says "once they have released the sales stats on the 20th of each month. " So the March stats will be available on the 20th April. Steve

Yes, I have started counting my iStock revenue as the money that was paid out in that month from this year onwards. That is much easier than trying to estimate a number and waiting until 20th to correct it. It will be interesting to see what happens on 20th of April and whether the trend continues.

Yes, I've got a few videos in there as well, but not enough to make a really big difference to the numbers. I guess I ought to separate them out from 2017 onwards.

I'm of the same mind - I didn't know it existed, it is sort of interesting to see where contributors are, but what can you do with the information?

While doing my monthly earnings calculation, I decided to test my Excel skills to work out a quarterly view of earnings per online file at the main agencies I submit to. I went back to 2011 and have plotted the results in my blog post. As you might expect, mid 2011/early 2012 were the "golden years" for me - earnings over 70c per online image per month, but then an uneven decline ever since down to my current level of 42c. February and March were actually a reverse of this trend, but it is far too early to be sure if that is just a flash in the pan. Of course I could go and delete my poor images and improve this number, but as most of us know, we never really know which images are going to sell although we hopefully get better at that over the years. http://www.backyardsilver.com/2017/04/stock-photography-earnings-march-2017/#more-2700Steve

They know that there is a bug in there are furiously working on a fix. I was emailing them last night about the issue.

I got two of these forms, one showing some federal tax with-holding and the other with zero income. I've forwarded to my tax accountant but I think I just go ahead and report the money I got from them and ignore these forms. This is crazy.

Thanks! I didn't know it was an old problem. I was more worried initially that these sales would vanish going forward (and perhaps I was just lucky in Jan/Feb) so I'll just wait and see!

Now that Microstockr Pro is pulling all the sold images details from the new ESP site, I can see which images sold and for how much in Jan/Feb. I was surprised to see some quite high priced sales - $40, $50 or so. Microstockr lets you click through to the underlying image on the agency and as the higher sales had a Getty watermark I clicked through to see the image on their site. For all images with the Getty (rather than iStock) watermark, I see the image is on the Getty site, but has a statement that it is a Restricted Asset and Sorry, we are not able to license media #624967062 due to country, company and/or publication restrictions. Here is one of those images: http://www.gettyimages.com/license/624967062I had a good month on iStock in Jan and Feb with a number of these higher priced sales - makes you wonder if the integration into ESP released some of our images into a main Getty library and now they are being pulled back? I noticed that the latest release of the desktop version of Microstockr Pro now supports the collection of stats and thumbnails of sales from the new ESP system. Of course, it only takes that export file that is published on the 20th of each month, but it does integrate that into the rest of your stats so you can see how images have been selling across all the supported agencies. I talked about it on my blog: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2017/03/microstockr-pro-now-handles-gettyistock/Steve
