General Stock Discussion / Re: Picture Nation - UK bias?
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:18 »
question is: can you make $ there.

There is a thread about PN under the "New Sites" section and I don't want to bore everybody by repetition. However to answer your question litifeta, I have been with them just over a year and have had some good sales. Mainly editorial type photographs of politicians but also everyday things like a petrol filling station. They do have subs but most of my sales have been medium or high res which pay 14 and 30 commission respectively. Madelaide, I have just looked at their buyers pack section regarding your questions about editorial use. Basically what they are saying is they expect their buyers to ensure they are using the photos in the right way i.e. if it is a photo of Pele without a model release it should only be used as editorial. I think the thing here is that they are pitching at buyers that know the law: BBC television, newspaper publishers etc. Hope this helps, regards, David

General Stock Discussion / Re: Shutter Village ??
« on: January 18, 2009, 14:00 »
Well on a quick browse through, I found this

http://shuttervillage.com/Sweets_g141-Processed_Fruit_p2839.html

being offered as RF. Makes me wonder how much these people know, ohow much their photographers know, about proper licensing and business practices.

Not a problem if it was sold for Editorial use, surely. Shuttervillage say they are promoting to newspapers and the like in their "about us" link. I have photos of products and logos etc being sold as RF (with BigStock and Picture Nation) for Editorial use. Don't think I'll be rushing into this one just yet though. Regards, David

New Sites - General / Re: Picture Nation
« on: January 13, 2009, 12:08 »

PN looks like a niche site for travel/editorial. I have no idea whether the "traditional" recent stock imagery with isolated models and staged scenes/emotions would be successful there.

Certainly most of my sales have been from editorial. Cannot say that for my travel ones. The trouble is the site is (obviously) just reflecting the work of those who have submitted so far. Check out their "sellers pack" section for "pictures we need" and they are looking for emotions, business people, lifestyle photos. Just the sort of stock imagery so many of you guys do so well. Regards, David

New Sites - General / Re: Picture Nation

Ok so the moral rights bit isn't as scary as I thought. I know it's only five images but I figured that having a few there would let me get a foot in with a few ok shots and see how it goes, with todays market I doubt they can afford to keep it with fees for long.

The site does have a lot of flaws though after more investigation, huge amounts of properties including a pizza hut and no sign of a property release, with the T&C too it looks like they would throw the photographer to the dogs if they got caught out. I haven't checked the model release side of things yet.

Picture Nation is now two years old. Not a "new" site! I have 1000 photos there and have made some good sales. Comission is 40%and you get 30 for a high res sale (they are not microstock). The flaws you refer to are not. They accept editorial photos such as high street shops, famous celebrities etc which do not require property or model releases. Their customers include newspaper groups and the BBC! The 10 fee is in fact new and most of us have paid it as it is a good site. I am just amazed it hasn't been mentioned on this site before. Totally recommend them. Hope this helps. Regards, David

Welcome representative of Picture Nation. You're doing a fine job. Now, can we can have the real truth and nothing but the truth from someone else please.
There's a thought Iriz. Maybe I could phone them and ask them for some money for posting nice things about them ;) Seriously, I am just a contributor and have had good experiences with them. Hope the information helped. Flemishdreams, many thanks for actually reading my blog. You are one of a select few so far ;D But it is very new. Regards, David (not in the pay of Picturenation -except my commission)

What about showing the 'buyer of the week' - if there was one?  ::)
Sold an archive B/W photo of the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court) in London yesterday. Yup, another 30c sub sale! Should make payout in the next couple of years ;) Regards, David

SnapVillage.com / Re: Is Snapvillage hibernating?
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:40 »
A while back that started having an "Image of the day" which seems to have become "Image of the year". They hardly ever update their own blog anymore either. I dropped my entire portfolio (about 900) down to $5 (from a rather optimistic $25) some while back. Result -not a single sale. Total to date (since they launched) is about $3 in sub sales. I've had more than that on Istock after only a few weeks with around 50 or so files. I persevere because of the Corbis name -surely they are going to do something with it eventually. Final point, I wish they would change that horrible name (with its connotations of snap shots). CorbisMicro would get my vote! Regards, David

Yaymicro / Re: impressed with yaymicro this month
« on: November 28, 2008, 12:33 »
I have sold 15 euro worth of photos at Yay this month.  It is still a piddly amount, but nice to see it improving!  I like the site, and hope things pick up there.

- I also thought I'd give them a little advertising in the top banner as a pat on the back :)
[/quote
Glad you did Leaf as it prompted me to sign up today and upload a small test batch. Love the site and uploading was so prompt and easy. I know a lot of people  on this forum seem to be giving up on Yay (I've just read every single posting relating to them!) but as others keep saying it IS very early days.  It's a bit like starting out in microstock and expecting to have thousands of sales in your first week ;) Business doesn't work like that. Any business. Regards, David

Newbie Discussion / Re: A great resource for newbies

The referral code is http://www.istockphoto.com/yourname

Many thanks Sean, that's what I've already got set up. Got the impression from istock that it was much more complex than that! Regards, David

I just set up my first ever blog (on stock photography). Obviously not much on it yet but feel free to check it out via the link in my profile. On the blog you can provide links to other sites so I have one which takes you straight to my istock page. That was simple enough. However I've signed up for the referral program but cannot work out how to get my referral code from istock over to my blog. The code is massive so do not think writing it all down and then retyping is very practical. I assume this is a copy and paste job but don't know how to do. Any advice welcome please. On the other hand the bigstockphoto code was only a few symbols and was easy to set up! Thanks, David ???

Off Topic / Re: Recommend a magazine?
« on: October 23, 2008, 13:50 »
I'd reccomend Photography Monthly. It's the sister magazine to Professional Photographer which Seren mentioned. However Professional Photographer has lots of business orientated content, so if your neice was looking to a career in photography that might be the one. They are both well written. Hope that helps, Regards, David

« on: October 23, 2008, 03:52 »
Well I did promise an update on SV sales once my portfolio dropped to the $5 level. However, despite an email on 2nd October saying this would happen in a week or so I'm still waiting  :(  Are you there Brian?? Regards, David

Bigstock.com / Re: BigStock don't understand Editorial
« on: October 23, 2008, 03:34 »
Joined them last week after seeing the announcement about editorial photos. Had my first editorial sale after four days (an archive shot of former P.M. Margaret Thatcher)   so was encouraged by that. Next batch didn't go so well. Three photos of a Shell petrol station rejected as not being of interest for editorial but two others from the same set accepted?! A Barclays Bank sign rejected as not being of editorial use. Errh well I was under the impression there is a world wide banking crisis and every newspaper/web site/tv report is crammed with bank signage photos. Seems a bit hit and miss as to what they deem editorial. All the same I shall keep uploading as it seems a good site. Regards, David

Sad news. Though billed as a new member I have been reading this forum for some time and Roberts postings have always given me a great laugh in between the serious stuff. Truly, sadly missed. David

SnapVillage.com / Re: How many customers does this site have?

I can't see why they would go any time soon because they are owned by Corbis.  If they were an independent site or a site owned by inpatient shareholders, they would be in serious trouble.  Isn't it up to the owner of Corbis to make these decisions?  He isn't in a rush to see them make a profit is he?
[/quote
And that, surely, is the main point. Am I not right in thinking that even Corbis themselves have never made a profit! Bill is in for the long game I would have thought given his resources. That said I'm surprised at the slow progress of SV given the backing potentially available. I would have expected a lot more marketing by now. Some stats for you: Portfolio size approx 900 . Sales to date (having been with them since launch) 10 30c sub sales. Photo pricing $25 (have now contacted SV and asked them to globally reduce to $5 - I am getting an increasing number of views but no sales so am hoping a more realistic price will lead to a surge in sales). Will update you in due course. Regards, David

Yes, all is working ok for me too now. This did happen before for a day or so and was just a technical glitch. David

SnapVillage.com / Rejection at SnapVillage
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:22 »
Anyone else had a rejection with the simple message "not stock material, no commercial potential"? New one on me! Their home page states that they post virtually all images providing they pass technical and legal requirements. The pictures of a child cutting out pastry on a kitchen worktop is online with two other libraries and would illustrate a whole range of things to do with children/play/development/education etc. I do not question SV's right to accept or reject any image they choose (it is their library!), just surprised at the reason. 32 years of working with stock images made me feel it had stock potential!

The best added keyword I had yet was "tabby" to a photo of a black and white cat! Not a cat orientated reviewer then. David

New Sites - General / Re: Has anyone tried British Images?
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:59 »
I have been uploading to them since March and now have around 400 online. No sales to date. As mentioned you cannot currently see how many views your photos have had so have no idea how much traffic they are getting. I queried this on their blog and they replied that they were hoping to add this in the future. However, they are still very new and I will be continuing to upload to them. They just need to build their customer base. Happy selling out there, David
