Yes, BS is very reliable, better than StockXpert this month. They also pay promptly. I like them.

"Desperately offering lower and lower prices...."

Really?  Where have you seen that?  If anything the opposite is true - big price increases recently at BigStock, Istock, Fotolia.

What is dragging income down is the subscription agencies - yes, they are fighting amongst themselves, waiting to see what SS will do in May, and in the process they are all devaluing their businesses.

I said it many months ago and I'll say it again - the more agencies that are launched, and the more they squabble amongst themselves trying to scrape an income from the tail end of the market, the more the genuine high volume customers will get fed up and go to Istock (or to DT or FT).

None of these new agencies will take customers from the big players; 80% of the market has gone to the big guys and all the new agencies are fighting for the remaining 20%.

I expect to see more and more quality photographers go exclusive at iStock.  And the agencies will only have themselves to blame.

Yes, I meant the subscription sites.

This subject can be debated ad infinitum.

My view is: low commissions give the agency spare budget to spend heavily on advertising - hence the low commissions at IS and SS for many people translate into the highest actual income.

At the other end of the scale is an agency like Featurepics - high commissions, no money left for anything else.  Result: low sales, low income.

True, but is that what's happening here? More and more we seem to be seeing agencies desperately offering lower and lower prices, to grab business from one another, resulting in less overall income for us.

Too many agencies at the moment, IMHO.

Too many photographers too, I daresay :) Some of you will have to give up ;)

StockXpert.com / Re: Subscritions at StockXpert
« on: March 18, 2008, 00:15 »
I opted out of subs at StockXpert the day it went online, and I can't see what I have to lose from missing the odd .30 sales.
Search engine ranking!
I also hate the 30 cents sales, but if you opt out on the subs, your files can end up lower in the search results because they have less sales. And then you lose credit sales as well.
I hate to see my eps files go away for 30 cents, but if I should opt out on StockXpert, then I have to be consistent and delete my account on Shutterstock as well. And then I definitely lose out on income.

I agree with this 100%, if you opt out at StockXpert but still submit to ShutterStock, and/or Dreamstime, you are biting off your nose to spite your face

Nah. My face would look better with less nose :)

« on: March 17, 2008, 15:37 »
I doubt there is any way for DT to control who gets more subscription sales and who gets more per image sales.  That seems like luck of the draw to me.

Interesting to hear that L & XL's on istock increased when you stopped uploading to DT.  That would suggest that Dreamstime is one of the heaviest beneficiaries of istock's disgruntled buyers.   That alone would make me hesitant to drop them.

Not criticizing yours or anyone else's decision, just sharing my own thought process.

Well, if DT can't think of a way to fix it, I guess the unlucky ones will go away :)

I am really surprised to hear anyone wanting out of DT because of subscription sales.  They make up such a tiny portion of the overall earnings on the site, at least from my experience.  My per sale average there has been consistently over $1/DL since November and goes up a bit each month.

Personally I think they are one of the most contributor friendly sites.  You really can't blame them for not wanting their forums littered with dozens of threads rehashing the same issue.  It has been discussed to death.

Lisa, I don't think everyone has the same experience as you with DT subs. It's true that subs make a tiny portion of earnings, but they are a growing percentage of actual sales.

Until I took some action to stop the rot, subs were 30% of our downloads. Some groups of photos seem to sell as subs more often than others. Some files sell in maximum size more often than others.

Since I've stopped uploading to DT, we are selling many more large files on IS, and I don't think it's a coincidence.

Maybe DT should think up a scheme which distributes the loss of income more fairly between contributors.

StockXpert.com / Re: Impossible opt out
« on: March 12, 2008, 01:48 »
Same thing here. A sudden drop this month, StockXpert is less than 3% of sales for March so far.

I had assumed it was because we haven't uploaded recently. I won't opt in though.

SS seems to be down for many people, seems likely it's the increased competition from StockXpert and DT.

I'm feeling more and more that exclusive on IS is the way to go. I just hope they don't start subs :'(

Linda

I upload everywhere in Adobe RGB, and also  noticed that our photos look very dull on DT, as compared with IS and SS, so I uploaded some in sRGB They didn't seem to look any better, so went back to  Adobe RGB.

As others have said, it's easy enough to convert to sRGB, but you shouldn't do it the other way.

Apparently IS deliver (to the customer) the two smallest sizes in sRGB, but medium and above in Adobe RGB.

I don't know what the others do.

[quote

I have always rejected the idea of exclusivity, but seriously began to think about it.

[/quote]

We seem to be hearing this more and more often. It's ironic that the other sites seem to be pushing so many of us to this conclusion, plus of course IS seems to have performed very well so far this year.

I wonder how they've done it? It's almost as if raising prices brought in more customers :)

We will decide at the end of this month. We have RF on Alamy, and it takes 6 months for them to disappear from their servers. We will then re-upload the best of the unsold ones as RM.

When Yuri stated in SS forums that subs would need to $1 per DL if SS wants to get back on top, I must admit I laughed, but he's right. Somehow I don't see it happening.

Still, with 7 months to wait before we can go exclusive, there's plenty of time to watch what happens.

We might even make Diamond by then. :D

Linda

486
We're opted out. Here's our StockXpert % of total earnings since September.

Sep   7.42%
Oct    7.49%
Nov    8.81%
Dec    7.16%
Jan     7.45%
Feb     5.69%

We haven't uploaded to StockXpert in Feb, I assume that's the reason for the decrease this month.  I don't want to have an argument with you Sharply, we'll just agree to disagree:-)

Linda

487
You can't know that you would be losing 10% of your StockXpert earnings.

You don't know if you would have made those sales as credit sales on StockXpert, or even if you would have made more sales on other subscription sites, if StockXpert hadn't decided to compete.

The only thing that matters to independent photographers is their total income from all sites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Uploading Strategies
« on: February 28, 2008, 14:53 »
We've been in microstock almost since the start, and in that time have done various things, such as uploading everything everywhere at the same time, not uploading to a particular site because of the commission structure, not uploading anywhere for several weeks because we were travelling, then catching up with big batches,

I can honestly say that it doesn't seem to make much difference. Our total income has risen at a fairly even pace.

I'm now experimenting with uploading only to IS, although I have just sent a few to SS, since IS upload limits have left me with time on my hands. So far, same story, it hasn't made any difference, we will have our BME by approximately the usual amount.

I'm currently deleting our portfolio from one site,  so the next  couple of months will be interesting. Can IS cover it? Time will tell.

If this continues, I suppose going exclusive would make sense, although I can still think of reasons for not doing so (eggs in one basket etc).

« on: February 26, 2008, 16:56 »
I had my rant the other day, and have been not real happy with ft but with a surge of l/xl/xxl sales last two days I've gone from a pretty low month to just hit bme. waiting to see what the ranking puts me :)

hmm....  I mentioned low sales at LO then had 3 sales in the next day. I mentioned that I think i'm doing well if I get 5 sales for 1 image in a day on ss, then the next day had one with 17 and one with 11 (and my best day in 3 months)

I've got it!!!!, My sales are linked to my comments here!!! I need to complain about a site here and then my sales go up.  happened 3 times so far.  right here we go bloody StockXpert, bloody istock, ... :):):)
hope things pick up for you too :)

Well, I hope it works for us too: We were having a great month for the first three weeks, BME by a long way...then on Monday hit a wall...sales have almost stopped everywhere....
Anyone else want to join in:-D

Fraud????

I wonder if state and Federal laws allow them to keep our money, if we refuse to submit to this unannounced change in the contract?

Well, no worries. We've never succeeded in uploading the right stuff to Fotolia, so if we delete our portfolio it won't be a big loss,  to them or us.

I have to admit, it makes me feel a bit helpless when sites change their terms, offer big sales that make us less commissions or hold our payments hostage.  What to do... what to do.  Good luck to you.

So true.

However, as JoAnn said in another thread, we aren't helpless.

I will join her in saying I won't upload ID. What FT are asking for is no less than an Identity Theft kit. How do we know this information will be stored securely? We have seen enough fiascos from various sites to know that we can't trust them. I don't want to name names here, I'm sure we can all remember some of the things that have happened.

What to do...what to do. That's exactly how I feel. Between a rock and hard place!

StockXpert.com / Re: How are peeps doing at StockXpert?
« on: February 08, 2008, 19:02 »
BME was October. November was lower, but since then, no change really.

January was about the same as November, December lower as expected.

First week in February is on target to be the same as Nov and Jan.

As happens most months, they are almost exactly level with FT and BS.

Linda

General - Top Sites / Re: January 2008 earnings breakdown
« on: February 01, 2008, 14:59 »
IS    36%
SS   26%
DT   17%
FT      8%
StockXpert   7%
BS     5%

The interesting thing is the big gap in January between IS and SS. They were pretty much level last year with 30% each, and finished the year only a few dollars apart. A fluke of the best match? Will it continue? Who knows ;D
And why do some people do so well on FT, while it really drags for others? Any ideas?

Linda

494
We opted out of subs at StockXpert from the beginning. We have also stopped uploading to DT.

This month we have seen many, many more large sales on IS than we have previously.

We have had our BME on IS in $$ and DL.

Is there a connection? I don't know.

However, we have decided to upload only to IS for a few months, and watch what happens.

Linda

495
It would be interesting to hear from Yuri.
He started this thread, but last couple of times I have checked, he was opted back into subs on StockXpert.
Can you tell us what action you plan to take, Yuri?

General Stock Discussion / Re: iStock worth the bother?
« on: January 26, 2008, 16:44 »
It's a Catch 22 situation.

IS encourages us to go exclusive by favouring the exclusives, but the more people that do go this route, the more crowded becomes the first page of the best match.

We can't all be on page one.

That means IS have to decide which exclusives are on page one. Obviously those who are most profitable will get the best positions.

You have to ask yourself, am I good enough to win in that situation?

Linda

497
Yes, same for us. I've always thought we would never go exclusive on IS, too risky, all eggs in one basket etc.

But when you look at how far behind the payout for subscription now is, and all the competiton between the sites, using *our* photos, you have to think about it.

By my calculations, the payout for subscription would have to go to at least 50 cents this year to keep up. I can't see that happening.

The sites all look at their own bottom lines individually, we (photographers) look at our overall total income, and the two aren't compatible.

We can't do anything for 6 months due to DT's lock in, but that will give time to think about it and see what happens.

Dreamstime.com / Are we just unlucky?
« on: January 14, 2008, 05:25 »
I've seen a few posts around where people say they get very few subscription DLs on Dreamstime.
I just went through our last 200 DL on DT, and we have 30% subscription. We don't have more DL than previously, and our total income isn't increasing. In fact, our best month was August, and it's been less and less every month since then.
I was wondering, are we just unlucky? Or are other people seeing similar?
If anyone has time to go through their last 100-200 DL and work out the percentage, I'd be really interested.
I have always hoped that DT would change their minds on subscription, but am now giving up hope.
Serban did say that the database was averaging about 10%, and I wonder if some people are getting a lot more than others.
Thanks! Linda

500

When StockXpert first said they were introducing subscription, there was a big fuss, everyone said they didn't want it.
The solution was there for the taking, StockXpert said if not enough people joined, they would abandon it. What happened? Just about everyone opted in.
I said from the beginning that if subscription was introduced with no opt out, I would delete our portfolio. I'm still prepared to do that. I understand perfectly that my decision is of no importance to StockXpert, but it is to me.
When it comes to DT, I haven't uploaded there for a while. I'm still hopeful that they will abandon the idea. If they don't, I'm prepared to give them up too. Again, I realise that my decision is irrelevant.
But Steven, your decision is not irrelevant.  Yuri and Andres have had the guts to take some action. You, and a few others, could make a difference, but you aren't prepared to do that. I don't really understand why.
As for punishing the good guys, I don't see what you see. I see a company trying to grab a slice of a pie baked by someone else. When this first came up, Steve-oh talked about new customers. I asked if they were new to StockXpert, or new to Microstock. No answer was given.
Now we see people claiming that SS sales are down. Is it a coincidence?
Please don't say that you don't see a way out of this mess. You were partially to blame and you know it. You also know what the answer is.
Linda

To me it's not a big problem, would I like to see more money paid to contributors for high res images in subscription plans? Yes. Will I stop submitting or opt out if they don't? No.

Why? I fail to see how one person's bad business decisions (Thread starter here) means that subscription plans are bad. Look how much he pays in production costs. Is that typical of the average microstocker? I would say not. Yet many of his groupies follow along on his advice.

Shutterstock alone, pays back what I spend in production costs and alot more, so there is no way I'm going to bash subscription plans. StockXpert has never been better for me, they are the fastest growing site in my experience, even after Subscriptions were introduced.

I am not one of the major players, I do stock part-time which is what the majority of microstockers do, for the love of it, not the greed.

As for SS being down, it's that time of year. It happened last year, and will happen next year. Things ramp up to November and then take a dive for awhile. Let's wait awhile before we press the panick button shall we.

I still think it's hyprocritical to opt out of StockXpert, and not only still submit to Crestock, but to accept a lower subscription payout. That is what the thread starter is doing. Crestock gives a 30% commission (after 100 sales) and a 25 cent subscription payout. If anything he should be complaining about this and not StockXpert, who pays 50% commission and 30 cent subs.

Let's start a movement around getting Crestock up (commission % and subscription payout). I'm all for that. But no one else seems to want to take a stand on that.

We don't submit to Crestock and don't plan to. At the moment there are too many sites, IMHO.
Some of them will surely fail.
To be honest, I'm thinking very hard about going exclusive on IS. I have always been against putting all eggs in one basket, but just now all the other baskets seem to be broken.
Unfortunately a visit to the IS forums reveals many thinking of giving up their exclusivity.
And who's to say they won't start their own subscription plan?
I'm going to take the easy way out, stop thinking and go and take some photos :)
