Yes, BS is very reliable, better than StockXpert this month. They also pay promptly. I like them.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT subs model« on: March 17, 2008, 14:44 »I am really surprised to hear anyone wanting out of DT because of subscription sales. They make up such a tiny portion of the overall earnings on the site, at least from my experience. My per sale average there has been consistently over $1/DL since November and goes up a bit each month. Lisa, I don't think everyone has the same experience as you with DT subs. It's true that subs make a tiny portion of earnings, but they are a growing percentage of actual sales. Until I took some action to stop the rot, subs were 30% of our downloads. Some groups of photos seem to sell as subs more often than others. Some files sell in maximum size more often than others. Since I've stopped uploading to DT, we are selling many more large files on IS, and I don't think it's a coincidence. Maybe DT should think up a scheme which distributes the loss of income more fairly between contributors. Linda 483
StockXpert.com / Re: Impossible opt out« on: March 12, 2008, 01:48 »
Same thing here. A sudden drop this month, StockXpert is less than 3% of sales for March so far.
I had assumed it was because we haven't uploaded recently. I won't opt in though. SS seems to be down for many people, seems likely it's the increased competition from StockXpert and DT. I'm feeling more and more that exclusive on IS is the way to go. I just hope they don't start subs ![]() Linda 484
Off Topic / Re: What colourspace are you using? Adobe RGB, SRGB or someting else« on: March 05, 2008, 13:18 »
I upload everywhere in Adobe RGB, and also noticed that our photos look very dull on DT, as compared with IS and SS, so I uploaded some in sRGB They didn't seem to look any better, so went back to Adobe RGB.
As others have said, it's easy enough to convert to sRGB, but you shouldn't do it the other way. Apparently IS deliver (to the customer) the two smallest sizes in sRGB, but medium and above in Adobe RGB. I don't know what the others do. Linda 485

[quote
I have always rejected the idea of exclusivity, but seriously began to think about it. [/quote] We seem to be hearing this more and more often. It's ironic that the other sites seem to be pushing so many of us to this conclusion, plus of course IS seems to have performed very well so far this year. I wonder how they've done it? It's almost as if raising prices brought in more customers ![]() We will decide at the end of this month. We have RF on Alamy, and it takes 6 months for them to disappear from their servers. We will then re-upload the best of the unsold ones as RM. When Yuri stated in SS forums that subs would need to $1 per DL if SS wants to get back on top, I must admit I laughed, but he's right. Somehow I don't see it happening. Still, with 7 months to wait before we can go exclusive, there's plenty of time to watch what happens. We might even make Diamond by then. ![]() Linda 486

We're opted out. Here's our StockXpert % of total earnings since September.
Sep 7.42% Oct 7.49% Nov 8.81% Dec 7.16% Jan 7.45% Feb 5.69% We haven't uploaded to StockXpert in Feb, I assume that's the reason for the decrease this month. I don't want to have an argument with you Sharply, we'll just agree to disagree:-) Linda 487
StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert Subscription Sales - Whats your experience?« on: February 29, 2008, 23:44 »
You can't know that you would be losing 10% of your StockXpert earnings.
You don't know if you would have made those sales as credit sales on StockXpert, or even if you would have made more sales on other subscription sites, if StockXpert hadn't decided to compete. The only thing that matters to independent photographers is their total income from all sites. Linda 488
General Stock Discussion / Re: Uploading Strategies« on: February 28, 2008, 14:53 »
We've been in microstock almost since the start, and in that time have done various things, such as uploading everything everywhere at the same time, not uploading to a particular site because of the commission structure, not uploading anywhere for several weeks because we were travelling, then catching up with big batches,
I can honestly say that it doesn't seem to make much difference. Our total income has risen at a fairly even pace. I'm now experimenting with uploading only to IS, although I have just sent a few to SS, since IS upload limits have left me with time on my hands. So far, same story, it hasn't made any difference, we will have our BME by approximately the usual amount. I'm currently deleting our portfolio from one site, so the next couple of months will be interesting. Can IS cover it? Time will tell. If this continues, I suppose going exclusive would make sense, although I can still think of reasons for not doing so (eggs in one basket etc). Linda 489

Fraud?
![]() I wonder if state and Federal laws allow them to keep our money, if we refuse to submit to this unannounced change in the contract? Well, no worries. We've never succeeded in uploading the right stuff to Fotolia, so if we delete our portfolio it won't be a big loss, to them or us. Linda 491

What to do... what to do. Good luck to you. So true. However, as JoAnn said in another thread, we aren't helpless. I will join her in saying I won't upload ID. What FT are asking for is no less than an Identity Theft kit. How do we know this information will be stored securely? We have seen enough fiascos from various sites to know that we can't trust them. I don't want to name names here, I'm sure we can all remember some of the things that have happened. What to do...what to do. That's exactly how I feel. Between a rock and hard place! Linda 492
StockXpert.com / Re: How are peeps doing at StockXpert?« on: February 08, 2008, 19:02 »
BME was October. November was lower, but since then, no change really.
January was about the same as November, December lower as expected. First week in February is on target to be the same as Nov and Jan. As happens most months, they are almost exactly level with FT and BS. Linda 493
General - Top Sites / Re: January 2008 earnings breakdown« on: February 01, 2008, 14:59 »
IS 36%
SS 26% DT 17% FT 8% StockXpert 7% BS 5% The interesting thing is the big gap in January between IS and SS. They were pretty much level last year with 30% each, and finished the year only a few dollars apart. A fluke of the best match? Will it continue? Who knows ![]() And why do some people do so well on FT, while it really drags for others? Any ideas? Linda 494

We opted out of subs at StockXpert from the beginning. We have also stopped uploading to DT.
This month we have seen many, many more large sales on IS than we have previously. We have had our BME on IS in $$ and DL. Is there a connection? I don't know. However, we have decided to upload only to IS for a few months, and watch what happens. Linda 495

General Stock Discussion / Re: iStock worth the bother?« on: January 26, 2008, 16:44 »
It's a Catch 22 situation.
IS encourages us to go exclusive by favouring the exclusives, but the more people that do go this route, the more crowded becomes the first page of the best match. We can't all be on page one. That means IS have to decide which exclusives are on page one. Obviously those who are most profitable will get the best positions. You have to ask yourself, am I good enough to win in that situation? Linda 497
General Stock Discussion / Re: Are things going well in microstock?« on: January 19, 2008, 10:04 »
Yes, same for us. I've always thought we would never go exclusive on IS, too risky, all eggs in one basket etc.
But when you look at how far behind the payout for subscription now is, and all the competiton between the sites, using *our* photos, you have to think about it. By my calculations, the payout for subscription would have to go to at least 50 cents this year to keep up. I can't see that happening. The sites all look at their own bottom lines individually, we (photographers) look at our overall total income, and the two aren't compatible. We can't do anything for 6 months due to DT's lock in, but that will give time to think about it and see what happens. Linda 498

Dreamstime.com / Are we just unlucky?« on: January 14, 2008, 05:25 »
I've seen a few posts around where people say they get very few subscription DLs on Dreamstime.
I just went through our last 200 DL on DT, and we have 30% subscription. We don't have more DL than previously, and our total income isn't increasing. In fact, our best month was August, and it's been less and less every month since then. I was wondering, are we just unlucky? Or are other people seeing similar? If anyone has time to go through their last 100-200 DL and work out the percentage, I'd be really interested. I have always hoped that DT would change their minds on subscription, but am now giving up hope. Serban did say that the database was averaging about 10%, and I wonder if some people are getting a lot more than others. Thanks! Linda 500
General Stock Discussion / Re: Are things going well in microstock?« on: January 09, 2008, 13:03 »
We don't submit to Crestock and don't plan to. At the moment there are too many sites, IMHO. Some of them will surely fail. To be honest, I'm thinking very hard about going exclusive on IS. I have always been against putting all eggs in one basket, but just now all the other baskets seem to be broken. Unfortunately a visit to the IS forums reveals many thinking of giving up their exclusivity. And who's to say they won't start their own subscription plan? I'm going to take the easy way out, stop thinking and go and take some photos ![]() Linda |
