Welcome Anna!

I hope you enjoy your journey in the world of stock. It is an exciting, sometimes very frustrating, but also very inspirational road you are taking.

Have fun!

isnt one pay as you go sale several times more than a subscription?

ss has a lot of customers, i am not surprised that many are taking up pay as you go. and if istock customers are migrating, i would expect them to choose a plan with what they know.

when v/a was pushed to the front of the search engine for months, many customers must have moved to the next big brand they know - shutterstock.

ah, are you guys comparing money? then I would expect the income from pay as you go to be at least 2-3 times more than from subs.

What do the percentages look like if you just compare number of downloads? (sales volume, not money volume)

O, that is interesting to hear. I have read that they are offering pay as you go, but I thought that 90% would still come from subscriptions. This must be a major headache for istock.

So it is now down to the exclusive collections, Vetta or the special collections from getty (hulton archive, csa etc...) as a USP.

Because istock is a pay as you go site with high prices, SS is a subscription site with much lower prices. So even with less traffic, istock still makes more money.

Remember traffic is number of visitors not number of downloads or number of visits, so one visitor to SS could mean one monthly credit package download worth a few hundred dollars, while a visit to iS might mean a 10 credit bundle. The unique visitors to each site don't translate into any meaningful info about earnings between sites.

I know, but for practical purposes I am assuming that most traffic comes from people who go to the site to find an image. Surely that must be where the majority of traffic comes from?

istock also sells huge credit packs to their corporate (getty) customers. At the microstockexpo, I met a lady from getty who said, she was just starting to sell the new 5000 credit packs to her clients.

It is true. Although I have over 40 000 euros invested in my studio and monthly bills of around 1200, my images are too generic for V/A. I could only reach 150k if I hired staff and produced in very large volume. But I really dont want to do that, I had a team before and really enjoy the freedom of working alone.

But of course there is enough room to grow. I can double or triple my income if I can find more time for stock.

Thank you for the transparency. Only istock has ever given out numbers, and they mentioned roylties paid, not download numbers.

If you keep up a good relationship with the people here, you will always get the best content.

That whole motion thing is hard to learn. Especially camera movements. Too many of my clips are made in "theatre" modus, i.e. the camera standing still and just observing the scene.

I think it will take me at least 18 months to get to a decent level. I might also take a few classes, to improve my work. But video is great fun, I am enjoying it immensly. I think I will love it more than photography.

"Wait and see" is a terrible business strategy. Usually happens when the management is out of touch with the market.

Decisionmakers have to have a "feeling" for trends. If they dont, bring in new decision makers with better instincts. Because it is very unlikely that those who didnt anticipate the market reaction correctly the first time, will make any better decisions the second time. Either you have it or you dont. No matter how many statistics and data points you have, it all boils down to the decision makers.

It is true that large companies can survive bad decisions better than smaller ones. A small company will often die with the first fatal mistake.

But unless you have a patent or complete market dominance, large companies can suffer greatly, especially if they work in a very competitive environment. If your competition is sleeping or more stupid than yourself you can make more mistakes. If the competition is very aggressive and very clever...well...things can go fast, especially if you have additional pressure from outside market events (depression).

And if you lose customers, everyone doing a business degree probably learns in first year how extremely expensive it is to win customers back.  If the competition is strong you sometimes have to simply concede the market share to them and start looking for customers elsewhere (territory, target group)

So I sincerly hope that the customers they have now will be treated as the valuable treasures they are.

landscapes and nature do sell, but you are up against some very serious competition. Maybe it will inspire you to work harder and become a true master landscape artist.

Here are some successful portfolios from istock:

http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/416793/?facets=%7B%2225%22%3A%226%22%7D#1a83ae6d

http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/3250705/?facets=%7B%2225%22%3A%226%22%7D#13b1d38d

http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/2511572/?facets=%7B%2225%22%3A%226%22%7D#3a49668

Just do a search for landscape and sort by downloads.

All these files show excellence in photography, concept and photoshop development.

Some have men as models, and maybe getting a man to pose for you in a business suit or with a laptop working outdoors is maybe possible for you?

Good luck!

I just uploaded 21 files to clipdealer in 90 minutes! I guess uploading to a server in Germany is faster than transferring overseas.

Does anyobody have any experience with them? They had a stand at the microstockexpo, seems to be a small team based in Munich.

Ill be down over 25% Rc, but stay within my 35% range. 40% or 150k RC is completely unreachable with my portfolio and style. I wont even try. I really would need to hire help and upload in high volume.

it would be nice if there were other intermediate bonus levels, even if it was just one time cash payments.

gostwyck,

there are unhappy exclusives, yes. But to quit the exclusive contract, especially if that is the major part of your income? I doubt it. Doesnt really make financial sense.

If they really want to lessen their dependency on istock, they will do more assignment work, add other projects, many are good with computers, so they write software, apps, or simply sell other digital products over the internet.

That brings a lot more stability then quitting exclusivity if you have 5000+ portfolio. Why would you want to trust the other agencies, that, if you read around here - dont seem to have much of a good reputation? All I see is threads about complaints...

So if you want to lessen your dependence on stock, then adding other sources of revenue makes a lot more sense.

None of the other agencies is publishing any numbers how much they pay out to contributors. Traffic may have dropped two thirds, but istock is now paying out 1.9 Million a week, that is a 10% increase to last year when Kelly announced paying out 1.7 Million.

The only thing I can see happeneing is if they keep pushing those Rc demands up. If next year they release new targets with even higher levels and people foresee dropping another level, then yes, I can imagine people might want to look around.

But as you know most stock artists see themselves as digital entrepreneurs, they are usually not limited to stock. Theyll sell whatever they can, they are very flexible.

The people that do quit the exclusive contract are probably those who dont just do stock but have another part time job, spouse etc... to keep them going.

So - my prediction: high ranking exclusives who are seriously considering to quit would first spend a year building up other sources of income while watching how istock develops. It is always possible that the management changes course and recognizes their artists as customers who pay a lot of money for the right to sell on the istock marketplace.

Good quality people are hard to replace. For all the talk of "crowd sourcing" - the crowd only serves as an open entry point, you then have to gradually discover the talent and nurture it up the ranks. And all the while make sure the competition does not steal your talent.

Anything to do with money is a very serious issue. Imagine the salaries to the staff in Calgary were paid out 3 days late or 10 % of the amount was held back due to a computer problem. How would the team react?

And then they see that the people who can do something about it go home on time on Friday and they are only told about it via twitter.

Just because the contributors are invisible faces around the globe, doesn't mean they can just be brushed aside like this.

I have every faith that they will pay us back the money owed, but unfortunately it doesn't increase faith in what is going on. And now we also get less money for pp. Probably because of the same bug.

Again I am sure I will eventually get the 4 cents missing but how about a simple email warning me about this beforehand?

Just a normal form of communication, I really don't think that is too much to expect? istock is a huge company with people who do contributor service as a full time job. All the management has to do is advise them to inform us. No big deal.

That is correct.

You can upload 100 year old files, but the istock exclusives cannot place their content with the partner programm for 18 months. Or otherwise send it straight to the partnerprogramm, then wait 18 months to put it o istock.

I sometimes send the outtakes directly there.

Independetns have their content placed with pp without a delay.

Yes, you got a login to read their information.

Sorry, you cannot send them photographs. At least not yet. :-)

But you can use all their resources. They have excellent creative briefs.

Did you get invited to submit images to Getty? As a photographers choice contributor? Or as a House contrbutor?

Or did you just get the email today that you can now access the inner halls of Getty to use the Getty resources? The creative briefs etc...?

Because the email that was sent out today has confused many.

Otherwise I suggest to post all your questions in the istock getty forum. Or the exclusive forum.
