Alamy.com / Re: release for body parts (e.g. hands)
« on: September 10, 2012, 16:36 »
Sue - the consequence is that many people probably won't have bothered to get a release for a finger or toe which may limit the number of photos people can upload.

Thanks click_click for the clarification. I wasn't aware of this Alamy policy. I thought it might have been an error but I guess not.

Regards,

John

Alamy.com / release for body parts (e.g. hands)
« on: September 10, 2012, 11:39 »

A few weeks ago, I recieved an email from Alamy informing me that a handful  :) of my images with hands (typicall holding something) were improperly identified as having 0 people. The images remained on sale but were moved to the "need more information" box. I made the change as suggested and confirmed that I have the release (they're my hands).

Thinking about it now, this means that any image I take of any body part will require a release on Alamy. I think the intent was to make our images easier to find in the search but there are consequences. Has anyone else had the same experience? In all fairness, I haven't put this question to Alamy yet and I will. Just curious to see if anyone else had this happen.

General Stock Discussion / Re: TAX Questions
« on: August 20, 2012, 11:31 »
Ah yes, Canada. I'm also in Ontario (near Ottawa). I'm not a tax expert but this is based on my own experience with microstock income for about 5 years.

I'm not aware of any income limitations for home office. I certainly use that deduction (I have a small home studio as well). As has been mentioned already, you're not an employee but are getting paid royalties. Since you are in Canada, you're probably receiving a T5 from IS. I've reported here in the past limitations in the tax software (Turbotax and Quicktax before it) related to t5 royalties. The software adds the income to your regular salary by default. If this is your issue, send me a site mail and I'll describe what I do to fix the problem.

John

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS deactivating flamed images
« on: August 15, 2012, 11:32 »
It happened to me several years ago. An image that was selling extremely well was taken down after several months. I sent an email to the admin. Nothing changed. I moved on.

I found out later that IS was right to take the image down (issues related to the design of the thing).

I actually forgot about the image - thanks for the reminder. It might work out as editorial.

Photo Critique / Re: Submission to Istock critique
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:53 »
I agree with the comments above. The toy boat isn't a good subject for microstock even if the shot was perfect. It just wouldn't sell.

As for your question regarding equipment, I started shooting microstock by using natural light (window) and reflectors. You can create your own reflectors with white cardboard, etc. I would start there and eventually add an off-camera flash (you can get a cheap manual flash for this with a cheap remote trigger - see the Strobist site).

I got into microstock with the hope of buying photography equipment with the money I made (to support my hobby). I wouldn't have been able to justify the equipment otherwise ("sorry kids I can't buy your school supplies this year because I spent 5K on a camera":-).

I did reach my goal eventually. Don't give up but also be realistic. I started in 2007 when microstock was relatively easy to get into and images sold much better (I was told then that I had missed the "good years"). I probably would have quit had I started today since new images don't sell very well. I would suggest you not invest in a lot of equipment upfront - shoot with what you have and use the income to upgrade equipment gradually.

Good luck

General Stock Discussion / Re: DT Wipe-Out
« on: July 05, 2012, 11:11 »
I had a good month of June at DT - they beat both IS and SS (they are usually in 3rd place for me). I do have a small port (ca 350-400 images).

Off Topic / Re: Mobile flash power pack question...
« on: June 25, 2012, 15:11 »
You're getting good advice here. Don't use the inverters unless you're willing to lose your flash. I've used one of those battery packs used to jump start a car (it also has a couple of plugs, lights, radio and air compressor). The second time I used it with one 300 w flash it blew the fuse on the flash. Needless to say, I've never tried it again since.

Thanks Oxman for the detailed instructions for the 5D Mark II, I'll try it tonight. Hopefully I can use the custom settings on the dial to switch back and forth (my wife uses my camera every now and then).

Alamy accepts RF. You shouldn't be uploading the same images as RF and RM.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Microsoft or Apple....?
« on: May 08, 2012, 17:43 »
It's funny, every time the Mac vs PC issue comes up, someone will mention the Mac "fanboys". What is that (satisfied customers)? I've been a PC user for over 25 years. I recently got a Macbook pro. I love the Mac and my next desktop will be a Mac. It took about 15 minutes to learn how everything works. My wife uses the iPhone and iPad (and the iCloud) for her business. There's no going back to PC's now. I couldn't care less about Apple's image. We just love the products. Hey,  I am a fanboy!

Is your monitor calibrated?

When I first started with micros I couldn't understand why my images were being rejected (they looked great on my screen). I understood once I calibrated my monitor...

63
I also started with just one strobe. There are a lot of cheap ways to trigger your flashes. I used a cheap RF wireless trigger on my portable flash (the flash had no optical trigger). The portable flash triggered the strobe and it worked great.  I'm not familiar with the Nikon set up. I think you can trigger flashes using TTL wirelessly with Nikon - but you don't want that here since the camera can't control the strobe's output.

Panthermedia.net / Re: Are the polls fixed?
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:27 »
It seems how well people do on different sites depends on the type of photos in their portfolio. Can't speak about PM as I don't have a port there but, for me, DT is way above FT with at least 4x the revenue each month. DT and FT used to be much closer - maybe something changed in the FT search engine sometime in the past year. Also, BigStock is well above CanStockPhoto and 123 for me. The ranking in the poll rarely matches my own experience, except for the top 2 sites.

Umm, I was under the impression that deactivation was the default. I recall deactivating the first few batches. Could the site be using the previous setting as a default? Can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

Newbie Discussion / Re: tech specs on picking out a camera
« on: January 19, 2012, 12:58 »

I agree that Canon or Nikon are a good choice. I have a 5dMark II and love it. I started with the first digital rebel (and a Canon Elan II film camera before that). In my case micro financed my photography hobby. Don't expect to make a living out of micro - not unless you're one of the top 1% (probably less) of micro photographers who can produce top notch quality and quantity (both are important). Don't expect that you can shoot images that are already approved and that your images will be accepted. Most sites are getting very stingy on what they accept. When I first started in 2007, all the sites had a list of subjects that were oversupplied (sunsets, flowers, etc.). It would be interesting to see how long that list is today.

I would start with a cheaper model and one lense and build from that.

Good luck.

yeah, right. I suppose you also think the Atlantic ocean isn't a pond :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: paypal charge?
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:10 »
more likely he doesn't live in the US. Paypal will only pay in the currency of the country you live in (at least they used to). I'm in Canada and Paypal wouldn't allow me to get paid in US currency to a US dollar account (i.e. a US dollar account at a Canadian bank). I opened an account in the US to get around the conversion fees (not just Paypal's but the bank's as well).

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy hits 26 million
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:31 »
Alamy sales are much fewer than on micro but they are worth the effort. I sold an image for $1300 last year (before the 60% commission) and was getting decent sized sales at least every other month with just under 300 images online. Sales have been a bit slower for me in the past few months but I'm sure they'll pick up again. You have to be patient.

Thanks for this, I'll install it tonight. Does anyone know if other sites also have apps? Shutterstock seems to be doing everything right. It's good to have some positive news every now and then.

Shutterstock.com / Re: shutterstock rejecting everything,Why?
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:15 »
I remember when I first started microstock in 2007 and pretty much every site would refuse certain types of photos becuase there were already too many (flowers and sunsets come to mind). How long before 90% of all topics will be fully covered and rejected in a similar fashion (unless they're exceptional or unique)? I'm hoping we're not already there.

72
This is an interesting topic. I wasn't aware that photographing monuments from public places isn't permitted in Italy. I just took a gander on IS and there are probably thousands of images of Italian monuments - many weren't even taken from public areas (e.g. shots clearly taken from inside the Colosseum). I can't imagine there's much money to be made with all the similar images already online.

73
Never had any issues with SS payments in just under 5 years. I also get paid through Paypal.

Wow! nice work - I expect you'll do well. Looks like alot of work went into those renders (lots of detail).

I wonder if the folks behind Lucky Oliver would be willing to sell their old site? It looked very modern. Probably wouldn't take too much work to get it up and running.
