That's a good question and we updated our blog post to answer that. Here is the extract of that update:
=== How large is the sample?
At the time of writing this, the rankings are based on over 25 million uploads and over 65 million sales on 11 agencies. So its a pretty large sample. Generally we dont publish user counts but hopefully this info helps you get a feel for the significance of the ranking. As our user base grows, as well as the agencies supported, so will the size of the sample. ===

The ranking is based on users who opt in. And it is also only displayed to users who opt in.
The rankings in the main overview are for the market as a whole . For individual agencies look at the rankings which appear under the agency tabs in the daily, monthly and yearly tabs.
If you click on the "Stocksy" tab in the daily, monthly or yearly view, then it will only be for stocksy, and of course as said above, only against those who opted in.

We are happy to announce our new partnership with VideoBlocks to include them among Stock Performers supported agencies. You will now be able to slice and dice your data to increase your sales in the VideoBlocks Marketplace. Since VideoBlocks launched its Marketplace last year, our customers have often requested VideoBlocks support, showing how fast their community has grown. With 10,000 contributors and over 1.8 million clips, they are one of the fastest growing libraries in the industry. Adding VideoBlocks fits well with our strategy to expand our analytics services to filmmakers. And its worth noting that VideoBlocks pays out a 100% commission to contributors something we havent seen anywhere else! It was great to work with Greta Pittard, Vice President Content & Contributor Relationships, and Aaron Silverman, Technical Lead, to develop the interfaces necessary to make this a reality. With their help, we can make sure the data runs smoothly between our services. Sign up to Stock Performer for a free month of trial!

After a year of work today we released the new Stock Performer!
The big highlight is our new image recognition algorithm! It identifies all the agencies on which an image is present and merges its revenue and downloads. In this version we reworked all our reports to take advantage of image recognition's capabilities.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Thanks to Tyler for publishing our newest article on MSG's blog: http://blog.microstockgroup.com/microstocks-business-case-how-much-can-you-earn/Our motivation was to explore how much one could earn with microstock if one decided to start today. We wanted to look at the most important parameters which are under your control and offer you a live calculator to play around. Of course, the evolution of the industry cannot be predicted.
