I am amazed that they don't fill so quick. Perhaps there is a lot more competition there, but I looked at what was on offer here in Australia and couldn't find much that really compared, most of what was around was almost double the price with 1 photog / teacher, no model releases, less models etc etc. not having done one of Bobby's I obviously couldn't say 100% but on the face of it they seem like an utter bargain.
I looked at the stock / microstock day for $99 + model releases etc. so you spend about $250 for a days shoot (not a big deal when employing models etc) I think you'd have it back within weeks. like being given money to my thinking, how do these things not fill up?
Phil
I agree and think that we offer an exceptional value in our workshops. Not only do we make available to our participants models and locations that would not normally be available to them but we always offer a 1:1 or 1:2 model to photographer ratio and each and every attendee receives a significant amount of 1 on 1 instruction from myself and from my co-instructor Billy Pegram. Working on your own in Las Vegas $250 a day won't rent you a studio space to work in let alone provide you with top quality professional models, certified makeup artists and hair stylists as well as all the lighting gear, props, wardrobe and instruction. Plus you get a full commercial release so all you need is a handful of quality RF Stock shots or a single sale of a decent RM shot and you recover your investment pronto. Not to mention the opportunity to develop your shooting skills and produce imagery for Fine Art and Publication at the same time. There are a great many more markets out there for our skills as photographers then just Microstock and most of them have the potential to be far more lucrative for us then MS as well. Staying narrowly focused on microstock alone puts us in a rut that can be hard to extract ourselves from and severely limits our earning potential as professionals.

I wonder if anyone outside of the SS forums goes to any of these? I'm sure they are awesome fun, but the interest must be pretty low
Yes we get a variety of attendees from all around the world that come to our workshops. Interest from the Microstock community has waned in them since I stopped focusing all of them purely as stock shootouts and started focusing more on PHOTOGRAPHY and LIGHTING techniques. The trade off is that we get lots of Doctors, lawyers and other professionals who are looking to make career changes instead. The weekly workshops sell out more often then not. The larger more expensive ones have been a little harder sell since the economy went south on us here but we still manage 10-12 participants at each of the weekend events which in reality is about the perfect size group from a work flow perspective. I know a lot of people think that we are getting rich on these but the truth is they are a ton of work to organize and host and our costs are significant. After all the models, makeup artists, co-instructors, grips, assistants, MUHA's, caterers, and the locations are paid for the profit margin is quite small. I do these more because of a love of teaching then for the money, it would be nice to clear a good profit every time but the truth is we offer to much for the price and as a result the studio tends to break even on most of the events. I see the missed profit as an investment into the marketing of myself and my studio as the workshops are a very good branding tool for both and at some point the economy will turn around and we will be able to sustain profitability with these events as well.

In the past when we have pulled together a group of Microstock Shooters for a studio day like this it has really been a blast.
This year we are looking to format it differently with the hope that we can allow the attending photographers to do individual shoots without everyone else shooting the same thing so that everyone comes home with some unique content.
The day after the studio day we will also be offering an on location fashion and glamour shoot out in the Nevada Mining Ghost Town of Nelson with a side trip to the beach of the Colorado river for some bikini and lifestyle work.
The addition of the second trip should make for a well rounded weekend for anyone traveling.

Actually I will open it to 16 photographers (2 slots on the meetup group are for VVS staff myself and MUA)
While I will allow upto 16 photographers experience tells me these things usually top out around 10-12 so I will initially plan to have 6-8 models available possibly more depending on the group that pulls together but I always try to have at the least a 2:1 photographer to model ratio

Yea you just gotta love the Hit and Run Trolls, in for a single insult and then out to lick the festered wounds of their anonymous lives until the next time they see an opportunity to lash out at those they despise for no other reason then having something of potential value to offer to others.

It's a nice write-up but I personally don't see it in your pictures! Your pictures are perfectly executed but they look like the typical stuff from Yuri,Lisa etc ; certainly they will sell well but they are extremely boring to look at. I really don't understand how you can talk about inner feelings and emotions etc. come on reality-check it's just a yuri-rip-off are you Yuri inside or what?
Spoken like a true anonymous trol and completely uncalled for. GRP where are all your Stellar Stock Photos that show no influence from anyone but yourself? Personal attacks of this sort only make this forum less desirable and reduce the overall effectiveness of it. Why they are tolerated here is something I struggle with and they are the number one reason I so rarely share anything involving technique here. Great post Laflor, maybe not the exact method I use either but each of us develops a work flow that works best for us and as long as we achieve the desired result then all is good.

I will likely get some deactivations as well. The rule used to be as long as the persons face wasnt showing, you didn't need a model release. I think I have some of those that will be going bye bye.
The whole thing is getting ridiculous, IMHO. Inside the casinos, makes perfect sense. Outside, pictures of the strip, signs, etc? Give me a break. Pretty soon, every object on this freakin earth will be copyrighted and not available for shooting.
What if the sign happens to have one of your photos on it? Should iot then not be protected? Without proper license we have no more right to profit off the intellectual property of others then they have to profit from ours without license. Seriously, someone designed those signs, they all contain trademarks and trade names and many contain photos or original art as well. Shoot the strip millions do every day. Use the photos as art, you will have no problems, use the images as editorial stock and you will have no problem.

Yeah... I wrote in another thread, I got an email from them last week informing me that they dumped all my Las Vegas strip pix.... that I have been selling there for a few years... now.... they're proprietary? =tom
Every Casino on the strip is trademarked and the sidewalks of the strip belong to the casinos not to the city. You could still license the images as editorial but not as RF stock. In fact if you look closely most of them have small signs posted around the grounds and major attractions with a no commertcial photography notice. One that comes to mind right off the top is the Mirage, has signs dispersed all along the perimiter, they are small but they are there.

I appreciate the feedback and yes this video is put together from footage from the past workshop. As we gain more footage it will be possible to be more specific ion the visual message we deliver. There will be many more videos in the future as they are great tools for SEO. Just for fun and contrast let me share what a video from workshop footage that is just hot girls. We cut it for a different purpose but it will also be refitted to show the
Who says you can't come away from one of these workshops with viable stock photos? I built my studio Vegas Vision Studios on the earnings of my microstock portfolio which is predominately Fashion / Glamour stock. We provide full commercial releases at all our Weekend With The Masters Workshops and the working format of these workshops allows the attendees to concept there own shoots and come away with unique content. These are not gang shoots, you get the opportunity to shoot content that no one else is shooting. Creating stock in a situation like this is no different then creating stock in the studio or on a walk down the street it is a simple matter of how you see the scene and composing the shot accordingly. Anytime a photographer learns new lighting, posing techniques it is going to translate into them being a better photographer which translates into producing better stock. While this particular series is not specifically focused on stock, given my background in stock you can be sure there is ample discussion about stock. For those that would prefer a totally stock focused workshop we do about 4 of them a year as well. The next one is coming up in Phoenix Oct 4-5

Content providers you better get your Astorglide out and lube up because this translates into someone taking it up the ass and it won't be Fotolia. At the rate they are going the next thing you know Fotolia will be charging you to upload your images for them to sell and you will not even get a royalty!

Ahhh, kay. I don't understand people who do nudes for stock anyways.
Yea there are better ways to market nudes and with them you are able to provide at least some protection to the model. I have gotten to where I hesitate to even put bikini shots into Microstock anymore with the way are images get used and abused.

I said that the workshop was not a stock workshop, meaning that stock will not be my focus while teaching. That said nothing is stopping a participant from creating stock at these workshops. Lord knows there will be pleanty of stock opportunites. The only restictions we place in the release has to do with Nudes, and that is simply to protect the models. If you want to come and shoot nothing but lifestyle stock at the workshop that is fine. It is also fine if you want to come and shoot stuff suitable for magazine submission. Either way the release covers the use.

I will be traveling to Colorado August 2-10 and have some extra time so thought it might be nice to throw a little photographic party in my old home town 9I lived in the Ft. Collins / Loveland area for 20+ years) So I have booked Studio 121 in Loveland for the full day August 7th and we will do an intensive Crash Course on Studio and Location Lighting. At $45 per participant this workshop is going to be the bargain of the year because all I really need to do is make enough to pay for the studio and cover part of my travel costs and I am going to be a happy guy. So here is the full deal I will set this up as a Meetup at http://www.meetup.com/vegasvisionlights which is the site I run all my workshops from so you will need to join the group but membership is free. Date: August 7, 2009 8:00AM - 4:00PM Location: Studio 121 in Loveland Cost $45 per person with a 12 person limit I will book 3 local TFP models and an MUA for this workshop. Participants will be responsible for obtaining their own model releases and ensuring that they follow through on their TFP arrangments with these models. WHile I know times are tough as always I would encourage you to tip models and MUA's who you feel provided you with excellent service. I will be traveling with enough studio lighting, strobes, soft boxes, pocket wizards etc. that in conjunction with the gear that is alreay in the studio we will be able to run 3 sets at any one time. I will provide reflectors for use outdoors but suggest you also bring your speed lights for fill techniques. We will cover the following lighting techniques In Studio 1. High Key In Camera Isolation 2. Mid Key - The Clamshell 3. Low Key - The Beauty Dish and single light artistic beauty We will work with soft boxes, reflectors, grids and beauty dishes. We will discuss various forms of light modification and the hows and whys of using each technique. This will be a hands on workshop you will spend far more time doing then you will sitting in a chair listening. I will convey lecture material but in a loose learn by doing atmosphere rather then a stiff classroom setting. Outdoors we will work on the following. 1. Over powering the sun - learning how to balance strobe lighting with natural ambient light to obtain clean crisp images with good color and contrast from foreground to background while using the strobe to also separate the model from the background creating depth and dimension. 2. Shooting at mid day - yea it is a challenge but it can be done and we will show you how to make the best of horrible conditions. 3. Reflectors and board to board lighting meaning I will teach you to use multiple reflectors to move and soften light even in situations where you would not believe there was enough light to shoot. All in all participants in this workshop will receive the ultimate value for their dollar. Hope to see you there Bobby Deal Vegas Vision Studios

Microstock Seminar - Phoenix AZ. Oct. 4-5, 2009 Kerry Allen and his great online photography community Photography Schoolhouse have invited me to join them in Phoenix to teach a 2 day Microstock Workshop. As many of you know it was due to my success in the Microstock Markets that I was able to fund and build Vegas Vision Studios. While competition has increased and markets continue to change and adapt everyday it is still possible to add a strong supplemental income by shooting specifically for microstock. If you are not familiar with The Photography Schoolhouse I recommend that you pay the site a visit. Membership is free and once you join you will find yourself part of a dynamic and active community of photographers of all skill levels from all over the country networking and sharing tips, techniques and critiques in all facets of this business we call photography. In addition to a very active online forum the site offers free photoshop actions, templates and more as well as offering FREE LIVE WEBINARS on different subjects each week. Here is what Kerry Allen of PSH has to say about this workshop: "I have to admit, I was a skeptic at first. But Bobby has shown me how photographers all over are making money with Stock and Microstock Photography." This workshop is an absolute fast track to the skill set you need to begin exploiting this rapidly expanding market.
