I also have a lot of pics of political rallies which I shot as an election observer in developing countries. Some of them are really rare, as elected african presidents and politicians campaigning in rural areas or at mass campaign events. Given the difficult conditions, the pics are not always tack sharp or perfectly composed and I also have noise on them as these events are held usually at the end of the day or early evenings.
Although these pics were accepted with no exception on Alamy, I gave up with them since they never sold. Since then I have them on IS, DT and even SS, sometimes I had to explain SS the editorial value of the images and then they got accepted. So I gave up on get them in breaking news sections - I guess news portals have their own sources - but I have sold many of these images weeks or months after the events. I have a picture of a political rally in Uganda from the 2011 elections which is selling 2 or 3 times a week as an illustration of articles about african politics. So maybe is not that bad having them on microstock sites.
As an alternative to Alamy I can also recommend demotix.com specialised in photojournalism, or you could also take a look to Newzulu partner to Alamy and Getty Images.

Hi sigalavaca, It is really surprising that you know so much about Pakistan. Where are you from originally?
I'm originally from Eastern Europe. Spent around 3 months in Pakistan working on some of the extremely complicated issues mentioned in the Amnesty report ShadySue quoted. And of course, there are many problems in the country, but since those are more easily accessible through mass media, I always try to show the nice parts as well. In Lahore I've met extraordinary people, as Asma Jahangir, the country most well-known human rights lawyer. Even had a short meeting with Imran Khan a former cricket superstar and now leader of one of the main political parties. Unfortunately it didn't seem appropriate to take a selfie or an editorial shot : (( And etudiante rapide, though I'm not following the situation in Pakistan so closely, if you happen to travel in India I think it should be reasonably safe to cross the border and visit Lahore for a couple of days. Especially if you are into mughal architecture or culinary destinations, Lahore is amazing from both aspects. that being said and to get back to the topic: best of luck to stockyme and all of us at the microstock agencies

Thank you Jo Ann, that makes a lot of sense.
Since it's been happening on weekly basis I started to worry it could be the same buyers to avoid buying an Extended Licence. But probably it is just some event triggering the sales of these niche pics, too bad that reverse search rarely finds anything.

I'm one of the not so many westerners who had the chance to work in Pakistan. An amazing country with amazing people!
Taking into account ShadySue's considerations on cultural sensitivity you have plenty of opportunities out there. Incredible landscapes and urban landmarks. I'm thinking about places like Badshahi or Wazir Khan mosque, I sold one that even appeared in Dawn.com. Also, if you have the chance to get models with nice shalwar kameezes and kurtas in business or family situations I'm sure they will be popular. I still have mine outfits from Khaadi, too bad I cannot wear them here in tropical Brazilian summer

I'm still quite new to this business with a relatively small port on several sites, mostly editorial and travel photos. But I've been noticing a weird pattern with some pretty specific images (e.g.: traditional household in rural Senegal) being sold on the same day in 2, or sometimes 3 different agencies. Always as subs.
So I would like to hear the most experienced colleagues, is it just a coincidence and statistical noise, or a pattern? If the latter, what would be the explanation?

I was also curious about this.
In the case of these 0.28 payments, is there any way to know under which subscription plans were they sold? The new packages or the regular ones?

Same story here but without the email "come back to us". Only 3 months with a small portfolio, started at SS, IS, DT, 123RF, Fotolia and Deposit. While at the big 4s I have regular (daily on some) sales, Deposit only sold 1 picture of mine, so I deactivated my files. On 123RF had only 2 sales so for now stopped uploading.
BTW, Deposit fell to Low Earners, and that reflects my experience, probably very inaccurate due to the short time and small port

"Image collection expanded 49%". In one quarter!!?? That was a shock to me.
yeah. but it was all marijuana shots.
is the "cute kitten with piles of marijuana and matches" niche already covered? we could do couple of thousands of that during xmas holidays

Mirella,
consider all the criticism you got here, sometimes the tone is harsh, but think it over, there is plenty of good advice.
Brazil also has plenty of opportunities for editorial stuff, for the peixaria: both tambaqui and tucunar are pretty rare and beautiful fishes, so try to get the fisherman with them, if you get him to "pose" with nice, big yellow ones those pictures could sell.
From your pics I guess you live somewhere in the North, go after social issues:
-deforestation could be a good one, but you need better composition - since the protests almost every day I have an editorial sale for brazil protests, crisis, etc.

lol, it's funny, though i'm not sure how would I feel if it was with my image.
But if the photos are licensed as they seem to be, I see no restriction on editing unless it's pornographic or unawful as it is included in most of the license agreements our buyers have to agree

photos: 56% (though many of the rejected ones was resubmitted without any editing and got accepted)

Very strange issue, over the past few days stockstats is giving me crazy large earnings in DT. Almost gave me a heart attack to see a $64 sale at DT. The site does not show this and after a day Stockstats will move back to the correct balance value of
happened here to, already sent a debug email to the developper

Honestly I have no idea about the reviwer's side. As it's my third month in stockphoto and I had those files on my harddrive for years for me it is ok as I'm still trying to find out what to upload, what sells, etc. But since on the same site I had images refused for being too generic I just wonder what is the agency's logic behind the refusal of a picture for being too specific or niche like. Searching for East Timor you get the usual "tropical/exotic beach" kind of stuff but almost no images of traditional chiefs, indigenous people or clothes. It really surprised me, but hey I'm just entering into this, so I guess there is still a lot to learn.

Just recently was uploading to one of the big4s some pictures from a not so well known location (East Timor) and the reviewer refused half of the files claiming that the image subject is too specific/niche oriented and that was not generic enough. The day after all I sold 5 timorese pictures. Don't really get the logic.

I don't see the message. The only weird thing was having a batch fully aproved after review

Uploaded 21 of my best sellers from SS and elsewhere to Pond5 and after 3 weeks wait over 60% were rejected! If my best images can't get through their review process - although they have been accepted at 9 other sites - can't see the point in uploading any more.
I'm a pretty small time photo stocker but been doing this for 7 years and haven't had this experience before.
Anyone else had this from Pond5? Did I just get a nasty reviewer?
fred
same here, had almost everything rejected in my first batch composed with my best selling images from other agencies

Being also a newcomer I would not rush into general conclusions on trends in a market of millions of pictures and photographers. My initial strategy now, is to upload a hundred or two images to each agency and see what sells. I had 8 sells in my first 2 months on DT, which I consider not that bad with only 100 submissions. Don't give up and best of luck to us

I started recently about 2 months ago in stockphoto so I'm not really sure about general trends, specially considering that we are talking about a market of tens of millions of pictures.
As my job takes me to political elections in developping countries I started uploading both editorial content (portraits, campaign rallies and street scenes) and landscapes/monuments. So far, only these editorial shots are selling, maybe, and that's just my 2 cents, the commercial area is really saturated with thousands and thousands of pictures in every area/topic.
