General Stock Discussion / Re: I want to expand to one more site, but which one?« on: January 12, 2008, 21:29 »
My income ranking is
SS IS=DT FL=StockXpert so StockXpert is worth it. However, to support FP with their photographer friendly 70% return, I would recommend to upload a "top selection" (eg top 100 pics) to FeaturePics. I have set the price similar to IS pricing. Upload is easy there. 53
General Stock Discussion / Re: Are things going well in microstock?« on: January 08, 2008, 06:18 »Yeah i think its a great idea but despite istock i also don't know any Designer-Forum so if you know one please let us know!- Educate customers (eg in designer forums) that IS pays only 20% to artists, FP pays 70% which is more than a fair share. Sorry, not an illustrator/ designer myself. It was more a brainstorming idea / suggestion. I saw a post from a designer on the IS forum some time ago. He was really surprised (not to say shocked) to find out that the artists get only 20%. - What is the leading Illustrator forum out there? - What other design software (3D) forums exist? - What are the popular/ professional magazines for designers? Do they have online representation/ forums? 54

Correct. There is no affiliation. I just think it's a fair deal ... 55

I would recommend to all the big playes like Yuri, Andres, Lev, to
- Upload to Featurepics - Set price similar to DT, IS, StockXpert per picture price for max size - Tick "do not allow downsizing" / lower price - Promote this site like hell (email signature in each eMail, web site, etc.) - Educate customers (eg in designer forums) that IS pays only 20% to artists, FP pays 70% which is more than a fair share. General Stock Discussion / Re: Are things going well in microstock?« on: January 07, 2008, 15:44 »
SS is upsizing images anyway. I do not know what "ratio" they use. But my last image was shot with 20D (and very slightly cropped) and it can be bought in 6700x4456 at SS (Super JPG 15.2 MB). Thats why they have the strict no noise policy, makes sit easier to upsize ....
Just search one of your images when you not loged in and check it out ... Downsizing to the lowest allowed size (4MPx) would make sense ... but again SS simply upsizes them. I opted out at StockXpert in Dec. for subs. Regards. 57

Dreamstime.com / Re: Approval Frustrations over recent weeks at DT« on: December 29, 2007, 09:51 »Nicely said Stock_fan. Hi DanP68, First, I still use a 20D. Next model of 5D is expected next year. Rumors say 24th Jan before PMA photo exhibition or for Photokina in September 2008. Some say it might be called 7D or 3D or whatever .... update is due. 5D has less noise than the crop sensor cameras, because less pixel density (larger sensor) means less noise. Although I do not get many rejections for noise anymore. From what I read, 5D image quality is better at least than 20D?! Also AndresR is (was?) using a 5D. Must be good right ![]() ![]() Next 5D might have 16 MPx. Usually I do not care that much about MPx, because less can mean better image quality (see above) ... and in "everyday life" it does not make much difference for me. However in Microstock image price relates to image size. So more is better ![]() I never tried it, but I would think with full frame you need less space if you would like to shoot e.g. people full body. Because field of view in full frame is wider at the same perspective (=focal length). And space is pretty expensive where I live ![]() Just my thoughts 61
iStockPhoto.com / Re: 8 days without sales« on: December 29, 2007, 02:19 »
if I would get 40% instead of 20% from each IS sale they would be my best site .... just a thought ...
currently they are 2nd with about 25% less $ than SS 62
Shutterstock.com / Re: why shutterstock?« on: December 29, 2007, 02:03 »... but nevertheless even if i paid the same kind of attention it wouldn't matter that much in the long term. Are you sure ... as far as I read the statements from the "large portfolio guys" like Yuri, AndresR and iofoto ... SS is not their number 1 or 2 earner anymore?! 63

should have got / get a dslr NOW.
1) you learn how to use the right tool and do not waste time on a P&S. 2) all you need to get started is a XTi/ 400D and 50mm 1.8 prime (70 US$). buy used if necessary. If you don't have the cash now, wait or better borrow it. buy from a reputable shop!! 3) Shoot, edit as much as you can. (sounds you do that already!) You will get your money back much quicker this way, because of higher acceptance ratio. - After the cash starts rolling in you can buy a 24-105 F4 (or 24-70 2.8 depending on preference) ... - and after that a macro (eg tamron 90mm 2.8 ) if you want to do close ups/ small items. thats all you need for stock 99% of time (on lenses) ... - upgrade body (5D or successor) ... - buy studio lighting to catch up with the big guys ;-))) well, that was a FastForward for your next 12-24 months ![]() good luck. 64

Well, as I understand copyright law, this is not illegal. It is cashorans work. Has it been inspired by someone else. Most likely. Is this morally wrong? Is bad ethics? Maybe. Illegal? Not as far as I know.
The earlier quoted article reads: Bialobrzeski himself concedes that the issue is one of ethics, not of copyright. Its not a legal issue. Its a moral issue, However, I have not studied Shutterstocks terms and conditions in detail, but I am sure they claim the right to ban anyone they want?! If this is legal or fair is a different thing. My personal opinion here is: as long as you create it yourself, it is ok. I understand that some people have issues with inspiration, but where is the boarderline? And who decides where the boarder is? . What I mean is who has the copyright on a colour a rectangle an arrow a traffic sign a web button the business handshake or the pretty girl with headset? Again legally this is relatively clear. Your work, its yours. AN IDEA CANNOT HAVE A COPYRIGHT! 65
Shutterstock.com / Re: Holy #@|@{« on: May 16, 2007, 21:05 »I see going exclusive as a big risk. If ' something goes wrong', it will be lots of trouble to get all you images into the other libraries. Thats what I mean. If I go exclusive and produce between 1000 and 2000 photos a year it will be a big hassle if the situation (or my mind) changes ... With my current workflow I get the images up to all sites - more or less - smoothly, but an 'open batch' of over 1000 image would be a nightmare. 66

I see going exclusive as a big risk. If ' something goes wrong', it will be lots of trouble to get all you images into the other libraries.
Some time ago many people (from all parts of the world could) not upload to IS. A technical issue with their web providers was mentioned. Well, I have to admit that it had been fixed after some time. Currently there are issues again getting photos online. IS answer is ' your files are corrupted' . Well they work on all other sites ... and they are jpg straight out of PS without any keyword or other data manipulated?! I like the IS sales too, but I don't have the confidence to go exclusive ... |
