General Stock Discussion / Re: Shutterstock remains #1 ??
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:35 »
SS is still number one for me, with Canva and FT nipping at their heels.  However, so far this year SS is at about 50% of last year's average, and Canva is down about 30%.  FT doubled last year compared to the year before and so far this month is looking good - still behind the other two but gaining as they drop.  Over all agencies this year is very bad so far.  I'm not expecting it to improve.

« on: February 13, 2017, 11:35 »
I have always submitted there because it is easy.  CS and DT usually have the highest variance in sales per month, and CS has been quite poor the past few months, with a lot of 25-35-cent subs rather than regular DLs.  Lately regular DLs have been better, but I just checked out prices versus returns and am not sure I will continue - they seem to be paying the lowest commission rates in the industry.

Size                          Price        Commission      Percent
Small                         3.00               0.50            16.7
Medium                      6.00               0.75            12.5
Large                         7.00               1.00            14.3
X-Large                      8.00               1.25            15.6
XX-Large TIFF           12.00               2.50            20.8

These are based on actual sales during the past month and the posted prices on their site.  With the commission for a Medium at only 12.5% they are really not treating contributors well - worse than iStock.  Are they worth it?  At those rates maybe not.

(If I've made any errors in those calculations please let me know)

????

What happened to:
50% of images sales (20% via fotosearch), subscription downloads $0.25 (fotosearch tiered starting at $0.30 per download. Nothing extra for exclusive images. Enhanced Licenses $22.00 per download

Wow, is it possible that this change flew under our radar? I was also under the impression that we get 50%!

Well, not contributing there anymore.

Edit: this is funny: (from http://www.canstockphoto.com/payout_schedule.php)

Our contributors are paid some of the highest percentages in the industry.

12.5%-20.8%. Highest percentages. Isn't this false advertising, which is illegal? :)

The table with the calculations is simply wrong.
Taking "instant" prices and "credit" commissions.

Real commissions are better, though still not good and certainly not 50%.

How do you know they're wrong?  I just took the prices they advertise and the actual commissions I received.  What are the "credit" prices then?  You say that real commissions are better but provide no data.  If that is so I'd love to see the numbers but pronouncing something wrong without backing it up with real numbers is not helpful.  Please redo the table with the correct numbers if you can - I'm sure we'd all like to see them.

Just got access to the new dashboard.  My initial impression is that it looks good and is an improvement - it will take a little getting used to but I like it.

Anyone getting this email? "
Your new contributor dashboard is coming soon. Here's a quick look at some of the great new features."

I got that one too - looks like an improvement so hope to see it live soon.

I got the e-mail today, and my new username was ... my e-mail, which I had figured out already.  Clicked on the invitation link to reset password and it took me to a nice-looking splash page - I like it.  Still no information beyond that though - no idea what I made last month or if there has been anything so far in February.  Not clear if they are still working on it or if we have to wait for a mythical sale to get updates.  Not worth spending any more energy on it - will just check SS and Canva and check back with ESP in another week or two.

I had a problem to login to ESP. After entering the good login and password, I couldn't access the main page but instead was brought back to the login page as if my login/password were wrong.

I've never received the e-mail and had the same problem.  I could not log in with my iStock username and password, but it worked when I used my e-mail as my username and my regular password.  No idea why.  Of course it wasn't useful as there was no actual sales data and the strange message others received about no information until a sale has occurred.  On one page it said I had 22 credit sales since the beginning of the year - which I don't believe - and on the others said nothing until some sales happen.  Using DM2 my account balance has now dropped to $2, even though it was a lot more before but not over payout threshold (is that still $100?).  I can't believe anyone is still trying to submit during this "transition".  Hopefully iStock will get their act together soon, but in the meantime I imagine they will be providing business schools tons of material for what not to do in the future.

I just got the e-mail too.  I only had a couple hundred online there and stopped uploading years ago due to low sales.  Was planning to get rid of them after last week when they sent a tax statement with a lot more than I ever earned there - will have to go through all past sales and record their weird fees to deduct from earnings to complete my taxes.  They are the only agency to do that so being rid of them will make life easier.  Have about a $70 balance so just hope they pay it all out.

Looks like they are trying to become the next Stocksy or Offset.  Good luck to them, and good riddance!

It can't ELs then - glad it isn't.  No idea what else it could be.

ELs?  What price do you have set for ELs?  I haven't seen any for that amount before - most of mine lately have been for 99 cents or less.

Bad almost everywhere.  SS worst since 2014, some others worst since 2009 or 2010.  Overall OK but only because of Canva and Videoblocks - without those two it was the worst since 2009 (and Canva was only about half of what it was a few months ago).

Its' really hard to understand everything when English is not your native language

Or even if it is.  It's not a language problem, it's iStock (or Getty or whatever).

I still haven't received the e-mail.  Very annoying.  Glad I stopped uploading to them several years ago.  It's all very sad, as iStock was my best earner for the first three years or so after I started.  I was planning to go exclusive with them until they started the RC system and it's been downhill ever since.  Glad I waited.

The cynic in me thinks this has been implemented on purpose to cause a smokesreen

Yes, it certainly does make you wonder.  The old one allowed you to see daily earnings of all types on a single page, and now it takes multiple clicks to get the same information.  There was no problem with the old version and no clamoring for improvements so why go to the bother of changing it unless there are ulterior motives.  It's terrible that we have all become so cynical.

I haven't received it yet, either.   They have until tomorrow according to their last communication.  I can't wait to log in and see all of my sales the past couple of months!

(that was meant as sarcasm, just to be clear)

If buyers use these instead of ODs then the amount to us will decrease - you can be sure this will not increase sales enough to make up for the royalty difference.

One statistic I track for all agencies every month is the amount earned per accepted image - this gives the best picture of how images on that agency are selling and indicates which are the best for future submissions.  For SS last month the number was the worst since May of 2009, just after I started.  Things look bad and are getting worse.  Even though I just do this part time and mainly for fun, it is hardly worth the effort to process, keyword and upload any more.  I suspect with this change we will have reached the tipping point, or at least this is the one that will do it for me.

SS was the one agency that kept rolling along more or less steadily.  We will see how this plays out going forward, but as we have all seen in the past these sorts of announcements rarely work out well for contributors.

Love it - LOL

To upload to or for sales?  They are easy to upload to and usually have fast reviews.  Sales are slow and not a great return to contributors with their RC system.  Are they worth the effort?  You'll have to decide that for yourself.

Newbie Discussion / Re: SS - upload all at once or slowly?
« on: January 25, 2017, 15:20 »
Images on your hard drive earn you nothing so it's better to get them online rather than waiting.  If you have a lot on the same subject then maybe space them out over a few weeks but otherwise I would get as many as possible where they can be bought.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Rejections??
« on: January 20, 2017, 08:31 »
Yes, and then you get the occasional batch where everything, or almost everything, gets rejected for (what seem to be) bogus reasons.  That happens to me more often with editorial, where the standards are supposedly lower since you can't control everything.  Weird.  If you wait a couple of weeks and resubmit then the same images can get accepted 100%.  Serious inconsistency among the reviewers.

So far on pace to be the worst month in several years.  ODs, SODs and clip sales have almost completely dried up and subs volume is down about 40% from what it used to be.  Other sites are similarly slow.  Camva was picking up the slack for a while there (and was beating SS) but has slowed down a lot the past few months.  It isn't just you.

I had a BME there last month and this month is definitely way slower - so far slower than the averages from all last year.  Hopefully it will pick up the next couple of weeks.

Extreme example: A company has placed a GPS tag on you without you knowing and they are using the (anonymous) data to create an app to predict movements.

That's not an extreme example, it is here already!  Tons of people are doing that right now, probably without realizing it with their mobile phones.  That's exactly how those traffic apps work that can tell you which routes are slowed by jams - they are tracking everyone's cell phone movements along highways.  With an iPhone I think you are automatically logged into that unless you specifically opt out.  And of course they pay you nothing.

524
I assume you got a new reviewer who doesn't understand their "illustrative editorial" category.  You could always write to support, but I would just wait a day or two and resubmit.

Chipotle and possibly the photographer are obviously in the wrong here, but the image apparently was not used in a defamatory way so I don't think she has grounds for much of a suit, other than to have them stop using the image.  How did using the image harm her?  Did she lose any money over it?  Lose her job?  Did her spouse find out she was clandestinely eating at Chipotles and divorce her?  Unless she can prove using the image somehow harmed her then I think she should be due normal modeling fees and some small additional amount for her trouble but that's it.  Apparently the lawyer representing her thinks they can get more so are going for big numbers, hoping Chipotles will settle to make it go away.  And they probably will, especially after another recent lawsuit against Chipotles because their supposedly 300-calorie meal made people feel too full (probably because they were really over 900 calories).  I think companies should be held responsible but the amounts are ridiculous - it's just a big racket for lawyers.  It will be interesting to see how this photography one plays out

BTW, the calorie lawsuit is a class action that they want to apply to anyone who has eaten at Chipotles during the past four years.  I don't think I've been to one the past four years so can't apply - I stopped going there after my first visit when I found out that one of the things they don't have is any chipotle in their salsas.  Talk about false advertising!  If I was a Millenial I would have filed a lawsuit over my great disappointment at finding out they don't actually sell anything containing their namesake spice.  Of course, being from a different generation I solved that problem the old-fashioned way by just not going there any more instead.
