Right, I sort of get the point, and then I would just submit your whole portfolio to all 130 agencies and see what sticks. Your approach doesnt make sense to me.
Why would you submit mine? I only activly work with eight of them, thats enough. No doubt you have your own to submit. Its not my approach, just go to some other forums/discussions etc within the RM or RF agencies and you soon find out what I mean. they fear getting some sort of exodus of photographers fed up with micro, thinking the grass over there is much rosier and greener.
I was talking to Drexxle I dont understand his test. He just needs to submit his whole portfolio to all 130 agencies on his list.
Oh! beg your pardon! didnt read it properly. sorry.

I'm always interested to hear about a new agency that actually makes some sales at a fair price.
How smooth is the keyword/title/description process? If it doesn't read and accept the IPTC just about as-is, that's a non-starter for me.
Yes! so was I. heard some very good things about them so ofcourse I joined, only to find out from the community forum: the default search is all screwed up and changed in favour of new artists, the moneymaking pics are pushed aside and all in favour of giving others a chance. Must say I have never heard such drivel in all my life. Its supposed to be a business not a charity.

The PP amount surprised me actually, well over three figures. Didnt think it was possible.

I am not sure? but I think they have also changed their search and this time unfortunately for the worse. As I said, not sure but pics are not where they used to be and we all know what that means.

Hi Carl!
Have you checked out their sort order for stills pictures that is? well I am a bit surprised! bit of a nightmare actually. I uploaded lots Scientific and sci-fi images, model released and everything and whatever you upload in stills seem to end up on the very last pages, before that is tons and tons of just isolations and lots of really irrelevant material.
Basically they are a video supplier but I am beginning to wonder how long experience they have in picture and sort algorithms?

Slow start but then brillant September. Great at SS and DT, even IS show a great increase plus the icing on the cake: 14, Rm sales with two pics netting, 6K. Not complaining at all. sadly, FT which used to be a great earner is on its way out, at least for me. Oh well cant have it all I suppose.

A common mistake from micro stockers is to think the trad Rm/Rf agencies is some sort of a way out of the swamp. Well its not. Its just another swamp but with a much better stench.

I'm going to Sicily & Malta tomorrow. Any hints are appreciated, especiallly photo ideas and tips.
In Sicily you want to get up to the mountains and then the small fishing villages, same goes for malta.

Still only 60% of what I got there in my BME about five years ago. A very unimpressive performance. I've even wondered recently whether having files transferred directly from SS could undermine their search ranking.
Bridge to BS. Yes I am beginning to wonder myself. Before the SS change to relevancy and then as they "say" back to popular, sales at BS were steady. Not so now.

While this is an interesting topic, it is pretty meaningless without all the other relevant details like how long you've been submiting to (different sites), how large your portfolio is at the different sites, how your port has been growing or not, etc.
... or if you've stopped uploading to site X or not.
That said, assuming people are uploading equally to all the sites, it is quite telling when one site had their BME over 1 year ago and all the others had a BME last month
I am wondering if people are uploading equally to all sites? I know I am not. Certain files goes to certain sites only because I know they have the markets, or am I wrong?

Talking about BMEs and while we are on the subject. I heard yesterday that two Rm pictures of some gas industry were sold for 18K ! I guess whoever the photographer he had a BME and a BMY. There is still money around.

I thought id just let you guys know what i thought of my application process to SS which was denied. I have 30 days to make a better selection of images.
I put together a very differing range of images, ten different subjects, ten different styles. I guess that was my mistake. SS require that 7 out of 10 initial images pass QC. They also require that the front and back of you ID is scanned, there is nothing on the back of mine, but they asked for a copy of the back anyway.
3 of my images passed no problems. 1 of them was declined altogether and 6 were advised to be re post processed.
2 were suspected TradeMarks, one was a mural on a city wall of aboriginal art, and the other was a vehicle with a persons signature on it. I understand the signature, i dont understand the artwork, it was not the whole piece, and a shadow was the key subject matter not the mural.
Of the ones that needed to be post processed, they do not like wierd angles, they do not like the edges of objects going out of the frame. I have a crayon on a pad, and the pad is 45 degrees to the frame and all four corners go off the frame, its not suitable.
And the rest, complained about white balance and underexposed. I may have to check my monitors and color profiles again, it seems that all my images are a bit dull, otherwise they would have passed.
I would have passed my submission, but im sure that my computer setup has had an impact on my submission failing.
Thats my experience, i fix up my images and try again.
Make sure your calibrated monitor profile is the same and that PS is set to prepress rgb. For processing that is.

Read this thread...
Correct me if i'm wrong but years ago Yuri has been accused from the start by RM photographers to do copycats of the best selling RM business and lifestyle images.
Really? I find that highly amusing as the total time I have spent in my entire life looking at "best selling RM image" is probably in the minuts. I don't even know where to go to find such images ranked by "best selling". How does one obtain this information MetaStocker? As far as I know RM is not even ranked by sales... Very strange comment.
True. RM is not ranked by sales.

I was actually hoping that my CG illustrations would fit well with macro. When I look at the stuff that they currently have it's usually a bit outdated and just looks bad in purely technical terms. It's like comparing the original Tron with the Tron Legacy CGI On the other hand things that take more time to create (let's say a few days for a single image) are just too risky for micro. I would love to do a couple of scientific illustrations for example, for some very rare subjects. I'm sure buyers would be willing to pay even a couple of hundred dollars for it, but with unusual subjects micro can't make up the low commission with bigger download numbers. I tried that and for some images which I know are the only ones available (so not much competition) I get 10 subs on Shutterstock. Not worth spending even a couple of hours on it.
The one thing I have learnt is. For macro, RM, work hard at it. For micro just keep it very simple, not insulting the buyers intelligence.

To my knowledge it doesnt really matter if you upload in adobe rgb or srgb, the thumbs are automatically transformed into srgb.

I think its been blown out of proportion really. Submitting to the original Getty its not what it used to be anyway. I have been there for 11 years and its really changed and not for the better. Sure there are some photographers doing exeptionally well but they also have extremely special portfolios almost impossible to obtain for the ordinary photographer.
Besides Tony Stone and the image Bank have always been a closed door for the ordinary photographer, even back in the 80s it was impossible to join them if images were not of a special caliber.

I was invited via bridge to BS and sales used to be really good but now its gone way down. I guess they like SS, changed their sort order and suddenly its just another low earner. Pitty.

What is alamy?
Probably the best agency around in terms of communication, respect for contributors and liberty on the forums even if you are criticizing it.
It's also my highest selling agency despite the abrupt fall on prices in the last years. A top source of income if you know what you're doing.
Beats me. I have been selling Rm and RF for over 15 years and Alamy is simply the one and only agency that surprises me still being in business.

My guess is that there's at least 200 non-exclusives making more than $2500 a month. Obviously this grows exponentially so the $10k+ group is less than 10 people.
I heard somewhere or read that the top six or seven hundered according to the old IS chart were earning in the region of 1500-2000 dollars a month, independants that is. Since then SS have gone fast forward so wouldnt it be quite easy for them to earn 2500 dollars today at SS? or have I got my maths totally wrong.

Well, I am trying to tap into some of the concepts of using normal people, everyday situations, panorama landscapes of travel locations that are not done to death, tourism photos, seniors, but fotolia rejected 60% of what I submitted. Only agency that does that since everyone else is accepting the photos.
Or get inside Cape Canavral and photographing space launchings, shuttles and all that

I just got an email this morning saying I had 17 images awaiting keywords. I must have tried out alamy then forgot I had the application process going...
Looking at Alamy, it seems like what a stock photo site would have been if the 1980's had the internet.
That, and I could not find the FTP. I did however find an image that looked like it was taken from a "How did you get rid of the ring around the collar commercial" way back.
So whats the deal? Do they take images like mine? Should I put legwarmers on all of my characters? Are sales ok?
Bingo! to the 80s style. They are in a tough situation since they have to satisfy lots and lots of old timers with massive portfolios of travel and landscapes and these people simply detest any form of micro styles. Alamy in itself is not the problem, its the buyers, very limited type of buyers.

I had four ELs this month, one large and three smaller plus regular sales. I find PM a good agency and professionally run. No complaints.

Pardon me but havent all the agencies the ultimate responsibillity by not accepting deliberate plagiarism. Lets face it if people think they are going to make a fast buck and by copying good sellers, they will. Unless the agencies refuse the material.
