I've submitted vertical footage and it gets accepted on Pond 5 but always rejected on all other sites. I think there might be automated size checks on SS, 123.  I don't recall specifically if Storyblocks accepted them or not.  For what its worth they have never sold.

Sorry, no time to post, I am off to looting stores.

Pick me up a Nikon D850 and D5, a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod, and a Nikon 400 prime please. Oh, and a few XQD cards:)

Percentages don't mean anything.  10% could mean you made 10 cents more than in 2016 if you made $1.  That means for this thread to bring any insights, if at all, people wold have to post dollars and I doubt you will find any takers.  For whatever it's worth my income was up 7% over 2016.

I had an impression that your sales have been decreasing every year because you constantly are complaining about how things are bad in this business.  LOL.  Good to know your sales actually went up.

They are, except Story Blocks and some other non-micro outlets.  Your topic said nothing about micro only.

Best to rely on the official source: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/yellowstone/

YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO (VNUM #325010)
4425'48" N 11040'12" W, Summit Elevation 9203 ft (2805 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Although, of course, the fake news brigade will insist the scientists are lying as part of a conspiracy.

Incidentally, the hoax warning dates back to last July, which just goes to show that old hoaxes never die, they scarcely even fade away.

There was some news 6-8 months ago that there was some kind of seismic activity there.  Then, the story came out about the geological make up of Yellowstone (i.e. big volcano).  Everyone ran with that and it has festered into doom and gloom ever since, when in fact it's same ol same ol. So you are correct.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Big Stock
« on: February 21, 2018, 17:15 »
I requested a payout from BigStock two weeks ago and according to their payment terms I should have been paid by now. Nobody at BigStock is returning my emails.  I've had to contact SS to seek assistance.  Has anyone had issues getting them to pay?  I hate it when they go silent on contributors, especially around money.  They only own me about $500 but that will go a long way to paying my taxes this year:)

Nikon / Re: Nikon 200-500 lens for stock photos?
« on: February 21, 2018, 09:07 »
I have this lens and I also have the 300 2.8 prime.  No comparison when it comes to image quality.  But the 200-500 isn't bad for an inexpensive tele. lens.  You will get some noise but the trick is to make sure your exposure is accurate, maybe even slightly over. As you adjust the image in post, the noise is kept at a minimum and when you drag your sliders to a darker exposure some of your noise gets "hidden" while keeping the details.  I shot a bunch of images at 3200 to 6400 ISO and while I had to downsize a bit they were keepers and passed micro inspection.

I would not get rid of my 200-500 because, like Increasingly says, it's a tradeoff between cost and quality.  My 300 2.8 images are so sharp it amazes me, but I would not consider a 400 or 600 prime due to cost and weight.  So the 200-500 is my middle ground go-to. I will say that bumping up your aperture significantly improves sharpness, so shooting at ISO 1000 is not uncommon when hand holding.  Still, it's a heavy enough lens that I shoot it mostly on a tripod, but not always.

With each new release the layout and workflow changes. Is there any documentation on how to go from batch creation through submission? I had an awful time trying to create a batch then find it after I created it.

I just wrote a series of articles that were published over the past few weeks specifically directed at people like you who are new to Alamy but who have been on the micros, and it includes examples of some of my moderate-sellers on there as well. You can find the articles here:

And thanks for the article links - I wasn't aware of Great Escape and will investigate further!

Thanks

steve

I clicked through Great Escape and you have to pay them to be a part of the operation. I stopped there. Sounds like another scam to send wannabes to micro while they make their profit off of the fee you pay them.  Really classic "anyone can do it and make good money."

Depends on how they define "good news".
A royalty cut for photographers might be good news for 123rf since they get a bigger share.

My guess is that they create a -0 tier, pay 80% and anyone who has sold at least one file gets put into that tier ;)

Bigstock.com / Re: Is it worth it?
« on: February 07, 2018, 08:56 »
it depends in which country you live. A am living in a low income country, it is worth for me. I dont want to miss it.

Right.  This has been the case nearly every time we have a discussion about low-sale sites.  For me, BigStock has gone down to Canstock levels. I made regularly about $80-100 a month there, and now it's $20 a month.  It makes sense though. With SS buying them I think BigStock is really more of a test site and not really used to generate primary revenue.  That is SS.  I doubt there is much advertising for BigStock and their slow decline in sales will end up like Panthermedia and all of those other sites that generate nothing.  I'm letting my images ride because I am on the bridge to nowhere with SS.  But outside of that, I would not be adding content.  I am opted out on the video side, too.

So if you are in a high-cost of living country, expect to not make much at BigStock. They are in the low tier for me, not middle like to poll says.  Other mileage may vary, of course.  For low income countries, you can earn a few dollars there but I would consider that BigStock might ultimately close their doors sooner than later (just speculating here).

Just an Fyi that if you are in the USA and you contribute to both SS and Bigstock, your 1099 will be only one form downloaded from SS.  It will have two incomes on the form but you do not download a separate form on BigStock.

123RF / Re: 123rf reducing commissions
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:58 »
There is no doubt that 123 is hurting.  Sales have plummeted in a very short period of time.  I'm now at level 2.  This month so far I am at .28 cents.  It's almost laughable now, for me, anyway. The cut is perhaps only to make up for what they lost in the Google search placement debacle where supposedly 123 lost positioning.  Right around when that happened sales tanked.  They continue to slide for me, a testament to my whooping 28 cents balance so far.

« on: February 01, 2018, 07:43 »
I have similar experiences. I think mine started a bit farther back that last Aug. I wasn't making huge money on DT but around $160 a month.  Their drop was not over night like some sites like SS.  It was gradual over a year or two.  Now I am making about $50 a month there (pic only, no vid).  They are a low tier for me, just above CanStockPhoto and about tied with 123.  Sad.

Now that the boards are up (for me anyway), my sales are exactly the same as when the boards went down. I get sales every day there, so my guess is that the sales side wasn't working either.

I use the Kessler http://store.kesslercrane.com/time-lapse-system-tls-starter-bundle.html  nice price now too.

I have the 60 inch Kessler Cineslider. it's heavy and too big and heavy to travel with.  I love it for easy local work out of my car, but I am looking for a travel Kessler now.  Have you huffed your slider around via plane? They do have modular designs but they look flimsy to handle my Second Shooter.  Interested in your opinion.

Nope haven't traveled with it, I think I'd need a crew to do that.  If you were going to rent a car then I guess it would be doable though, there are hard cases for planes.

I do have the hard case but I am looking to hike into more remote areas with a lightweight system, probably modular.  The modulars I have seen other use, though, don't do well in the breeze....they are too flimsy.  Thanks for posting.
