"You are only partially correct. Medium and Large format were used for stock photography, but so was 35mm. How do I know? Because I used to browse the submission requirements of various RM stock agencies.
" Hi Duane, if you have experience with stock, why are you asking all these simple questions??? Your film portfolio must have already been ported to digital a long time ago. Either by yourself or by your agencies. Why dont you just give us a link to your website, so we can see what you do? It is a lot easier to give advice if we now the subjects your shooting. istock also accepts film scans, by the way. On uploading you can choose between film and digital media. They have special reviewers for film. 5153

Your question was the best one in that thread. I am referring to those long ago dark ages in 2005 when I got onto istock and watched all the different characters on the forum with amazement. But it didnt take long to realize your sometimes snarky comments were great at speeding up the conversation. They still are. Straight to the point.

In the days of film the commercial stock photographer was using medium or large format cameras....besides film has been the Dodo for at least 6 years commercially. A century on the internet.
A Canon Digital Rebel will easily do the trick. Even a simple Canon G12 will work for stock. But will it work for your stock?? Sean is right, this will be fun. My workflow: From Raw to Tiff, process in Photoshop CS5, inspect at 200%, save only as jpg at highest quality. No upsizing. No sharpening of any kind. Also turn of all sharpening in the camera. Please show us your portfolio when you get online. 5155

"Why do you think "stock photography" is something you want to do?"
It really is the best question. All else follows from it. If you want to just share your hobby/travel pics, you will need a different camera than if you are planning to do professional glamour or lifestyle shots. More important than the camera would be your lighting skills and lighting equipment. Do you want to shoot people, or food, or still life? Studio shots or on location? Who will be your models? How much will you pay them? How expensive is the make up artist? And where do you find a good one? What type of buyers are you targeting? Do you know their budget, their layout and composition requirements? etc...etc... I use a Sony Alpha 900, a Leica M9 or a Canon G12 or Sony Nex5. I know a phoographer with over 12 000 downloads on istock who does it all with Sigma SD 1.All these cameras can produce great sellable stock pictures. I use strobes, speedlights or daylight. I can process with Photoshop Elements 2.0 (still have it on the laptop) or Photoshop CS5. Do you have a background in graphic design? Have you worked in advertising before? So the question Sean gave you, was the best one. 5156

Oh come on, I also thought Sean was strange when I first got on the forums. He is a complete newbie asking simple questions. He wil learn about us all pretty soon...;-)
And probably as soon as he realizes how much work it is...probably move on..and tell everyone that there is no money in stock... 5157
General Stock Discussion / Re: Share your knowledge or keep it secret?« on: June 25, 2011, 16:10 »
I dont mind sharing.
In my experience most people completely underestimate how much work good stock is. Once they try, they give up pretty fast. The ones that do take my advice and become productive usually have something to give back as well. Those who are hell bent on copying me will do so anyway. Pictures and downloads are open to see for everyone. Ive shared many things (finance, health, photography, social) over the internet and still feel I got back 10 times more in information and time saved when I did my own searches. ETA: the bell curve on istock is demotivating. I know many people who are relcuctant to share openly on the forums. Sue has a point when she said that it is part of the reasons why so much community interaction is moving behind closed doors on facebook. Unfortunately it is a negative spiral. The less goes on in the forums, the more we share on facebook, the less time we spend on the forums...etc... istock used to be my one stop "watering hole" to hang out all day while I was working. Now my attention is split over several sites and I am becoming active in non-photo ccircles as well. In the end you just follow the fun. I hope that at least the money (buyers) stays with istock... 5158

"m not alone in my thinking, its become an issue in the IS-forum as well! at the moment it really looks like dot 1, is the cheapo leftovers, doesnt it, especially since the message is: cheaper files."
The customers have eyes to see, dont they? I mean, they click on the dots and immediatly get the results. I really dont think you can fool them to believe that the cheaper file is "amateur work" if it clearly isnt. 5159

I think a slider has the advantage that they can create as many collections as they want and the slider stays the same. Otherwise you need many tickboxes, or have to add/remove them whenever there are changes.
I didn't realize you can move the bottom slider as well. This will be very useul for the buyer who wants to look at the more exclusive material. 5162
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Woo-Nay« on: June 23, 2011, 16:16 »
A lot of community activity has moved to facebook. I have daily contact with istockers from all over the globe. we share shooting tips, images, ask for help with props or locations or recommend models. Plus all the chitchat and kid pictures. Why cant we have all that activity on istock??
Since last September, I do think the negative mood and all the drastic changes on istock has made members look for other outlets to share the creative spirit. The biggest disadvantage is that you meet fewer people and watching several forums, facebook and the blogoshpere isnt so efficient. I would very much prefer to have a bustling, hustling forum full of enthusiastic people. 45 woo-yay comments is pitiful and depressing. I mean, what about all the new incoming fresh talent?? Where are they? 5163

I think it is a nice idea but I strongly oppose the "secrecy passus" that problems should not be discussed openly in the forums.
It is the transparency of the internet that is bringing out the best in communities. It is even bringing down dictatorships and empowering oppressed people. And for business it is the same. Transparency keeps everyone on their toes and their best behaviour. No more behind closed doors wheeling and dealing. 5166

"More contributors ,more choice of content =Less sales.Simple."
The answer to that is: more growth. More customers. My sales on the partner program keep growing...why not on istock?? (Sean, I hear you... - but I believe it is the advertising of the partner sites that is creating the growth, not my content) istock is selling digital content around the globe, the world is their oyster and Getty has offices all over. But they have to advertise istock to bring in new customers. I used to see a lot more istock ads while crawling the net. Now I just see fotolia, the green apples of Veer and especially in Germany Corbis. They have a very active campaign with a cute robot. I have seen thinkstock, but I dont even know what the current istock campaign looks like. As an istock exclusive shouldnt this be something I can still remember in my dreams? And of course I also wonder how many customers we are losing because they cannot filter by price like on Veer. When the price range was similar it wasnt necessary, but with the huge differences between agency and the normal collection it is. I know they said they are working on it and I believe them. I just hope the filter is ready soon and that there will be a massive istock advertising campaign in Autumn. Would be nice to see Alexa stats were istock is leading again. 5167
General Stock Discussion / Re: Want to work for Yuri? He's starting his own direct sales channel« on: June 16, 2011, 15:30 »
Why do you think that this would affect istock?
In the end this will just be another microstocksite and at least for now the content is not exclusive or in any way special to what the other agencies have. istock also has the added benefit of the Getty umbrella to move content around. It will take years to draw in the buyers and create a solid plattform, if he wants to do more than just sell his own content. If Flickr started a stocksite...that would worry me. But with Yuri I see no danger for istock. Maybe for the smaller agencies that depend heavily on his content. Still, it will be very interesting to see what he does. 5168
General Stock Discussion / Re: Want to work for Yuri? He's starting his own direct sales channel« on: June 16, 2011, 14:19 »
I should have added to do it with high income. i was thinking of a site where you invest in your own worldwide advertising, place ads, work with sales people, add new software tools for customers etc...
Obviously anyone can sell from their own site, but to attract thousands of buyers you will need the volume. 5169
General Stock Discussion / Re: Want to work for Yuri? He's starting his own direct sales channel« on: June 16, 2011, 13:02 »
This will be very interesting to watch.
Yuri has enough income to create a really interesting stock site. I doubt he will pull his images from the other sites, that is excellent advertisement. But he could start to offer all new images on his own site first and then only send them to the agencies after 6 months or so. This will create an incentive for buyers to sign up to his site and check regularly for new uploads. They could then buy "fresh hot images" that are not yet on the other agencies. He can also offer his own "exclusive" collection for more specialized images or for RM. There is a lot you can do with your own site, but you have to produce enough images to make it interesting. Only the top players in the industry have the quality, image volume and income stream to do this. My personal guess is he will offer more interesting tools for the buyers. There is a lot missing to make it even easier for the non web designer customer/ office worker to use images. Interesting times. Competition is good and will keep all the agencies on their toes. 5170

"we intend to split the profit 50/50 with our dear contributors..."
splitting the profits by 50% can easily mean that the photographer only gets 20% - because the cost of doing business in this very competitive market is so high. 5171
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Friday's RC target announcement and iStock's strategy behind it« on: June 06, 2011, 04:28 »
Wasnt it Paul Klein that said that and wasnt it technically correct as a financial term during a shareholder meeting? In the sense of "artists are our greatest financial responsibility"? I think Paul Cowan had info on that.
The Kelly Thompson I met, albeit briefly, is a very decent person. Also the rest of the HQ team are highly dedicated to the community. They dont run around in crocodile leather outfits and I didnt see them lighting cigars with 100 dollar bills. But crowd sourcing communication is obviously not Kellys forte and it is obvious that istock is under pressure to lower royalties to artists from Getty. They only pay 20% and they have photographers begging them to join, so why shouldnt they think this is an acceptable standard?? We will see how it plays out, every player in this business has to do his or her calculations to see what fits best for them. I will remain exclusive, but will probably devote more time to other income streams or finally get into video, because I dont see how I can reach 150 000 credits with my "coffee production" studio. I could try to make high quality wine, but I have invested over 30 000 dollars in what I have here and want to make the most of my investment. FWIW, my new files sell, have views and get lightboxed so V/A doesnt seem to be too much of a problem in my niche. Sales in general are of course very, very slow, but I dont know if this is due to my lack of uploads in the last 18 months or general slowness because the site is losing buyers/dilution/etc... 5172
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Friday's RC target announcement and iStock's strategy behind it« on: June 06, 2011, 03:56 »
From what I read here, there are many independents who are trying to sell stock from their own site but discovering that dealing with customers, running after payments etc...is very time consuming and driving traffic to your site quite expensive. I mean, why doesnt yuri arcurs create his own site? He has so much content it should be very easy for him to do so (and he has the staff to handle the details).
That is the only thing that will shift the balance towards the artists - if it becomes obvious that selling by yourself is so successful that you dont have to work with an agency. Then agencies will have to offer better rates to attract the talent. By the way, I am still in favor of the concept of the RC targets, it is just the height of levels and the dominance of V/A that bug me. The old system made it nearly impossible to reach diamond for a newbie and why should a file that brings in 100 dollars have the same value as a sale for 1 dollar? If it was possible to carry over excess credits into the next year, there was a filter for V/A and the targets were announced on time in January with levels that were clearly reasonably reachable for a pro stock artist I dont think the spirit in the community would be so negative. And of course if Kelly was able to inspire the community when he communicates online instead of demoralizing them...well at least they are aware of that and "better communication" has become a focus of attention. With V/A I feel that I used to work as a supplier for a coffe shop and was one of many, many producers of special types of coffee. Then the owners realized some of us offer high quality wine and added a special section in the store for that. We all applauded, because this will draw in new customers, who will hopefully also buy coffee for their daily needs and we agree that high production and rare wine, deserves a higher price than our coffee. But suddenly we enter the store and we see that most of the shelves have been stacked with expensive wine and the coffee has been pushed to the back of the store. And although there may be customers who love wine so much that they keep coming back to it, most of us feel we are losing our target market, the daily coffee buyers who spent a quick dollar and then went back to work. Hopefully istock soon offers a filter option for price or collections. Or that the shop owner decides to just stack the top row with wine and fills up the rest with coffee again because he realizes that having reliable volume sales is better than highly shifting daily results from the small community of wine lovers. I also dont see how istock can expand into upcoming new markets like eastern Europe, India, China, Russia if buyers do a search and find most images they see start at 30 dollars. They have Gettyimages for that. just my take on the situation 5173

"Redeemed Credit Targets: I know that we promised these awhile ago and we have not lived up to that promise. This time, we will. Redeemed credit targets will be announced in three weeks. "
Well, they said they would...:-) I hope they lower them, at least a little and then everyone can just spend the next months working. It would be nice to have a little peace and quiet without drama. They kept the levels for video and illustration, so why not for us? Or maybe they surprise us - like adding RC for income earned through Partnerprograms or Getty. 5174

I think it would make a lot more sense to do this now when all the artist can choose their best files. At least if they want this to be primarily to help manage the huge collection.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Photo+ - new iStockphoto collection for non exclusives« on: May 05, 2011, 16:59 »
There are millions of photographs on istock and 50 000 plus new ones coming every week. The plus collection allows you to identify the best images from a series. These should then get preference in the search, at least that is what would make sense.
I see this first of all as content management solution that gives the artist the choice and control. Yes, you will earn more. You will get more RCs. So the next levels will be...well, we will see. I hope they have something coming for the buyers as well. |
