Shutterstock.com / Re: When does Shutterstock pay out?
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:09 »
relax, as the email already said a million times before... you get paid BY THE 15TH.
if you realise that this is not some agency that only has a handful of contributors that reach payout
monthly or even once a year or a lifetime, and that many of us reach payout each month
and has never had a late payment or a non-payment...
don't you think your wasted energy is best spent on making more images for your port ???

527
The key point I still try to figure out how to reach optimal database performance and exposure of the material.

I do think the quality in terms of technique and composition has to be great in any case, but all the rest might be done by coincidence and database positioning of our material.

Since the Agencies (afaik) do not share the algorithms they use to calculate the positioning - at best we could try to sort of reverse engineer the objective attributes which influence the positioning (objective meaning the sales figures, portfolio performance, number of new uploads etc., not how "good" or stylish the material is since these aspects always vary and are subjective).

now you're losing me. .. as i am old-school and really lacking in what you mentioned in your last para.
but i do think you would be right in paying more attention to those stuff you mentioned aside from style and composition .
many years ago at the start of the internet era, i was also told by some marketing ppl in the company i was working for, that knowing all those things like "algorithm" "search engine",etc.. as i said way over my head, can make a big difference in how successful a web business be.
a few brainiacs in my dept (maths majors) did try to explain me to how to do it, but like i said,
as an arts major, it all went way past my grey matter could handle.

yes, the success could well be something you can manage if you know all those things that go into making your sales and exposure better .  if you know what i mean, cos i don't even know what i just said, LOL

528
when i was with dreamstime (comatose time) me and a buddy used to get personal message like this.
they came through the comments to us.
but they usually end up with flakes, as it all turns out that they were trying to get work from you for either free or something even less than coming through dt.
dt, at that time, also forbade direct communication.

fotolia , once printed the names of the company who downloaded our work. but they withdrew it due to , according to them, too many contributors were bothering the clients by contacting them directly.

529
yes, i would definitely say i am an editing freak. esp for ss, as the placement favors dls per image.
i would not canabilize my port and have 20 images 1 dl vs  20 dl 1 image...
as the latter would find me on pg 1 top row and continue to get me daily (almost) dl through
time.

you're assuming that it would always be 1:20 and 20:1

if each image can sell on its own, it may be more like 40 downloads of 20 images, where 1 or 2 images get 5-10 dls and some get 1-3 and some get none (ie, bell curved)

by picking only 1 you're culling images that buyers may want - eg, bird's head turned up or down, horiz / vertical, etc, etc  plenty of reason for variety before becoming spam

That is my internal conflict. I usually would agree with estudiante rapido and SS definitely ranks by file/performance, but on the other hand it is sometimes unpredictable which image of a series becomes a bestseller and since I had many surprises in the past I am always afraid to lose sales as well.

Another aspect is time. If I chose twice the files I usually would I submit the other half about a year later and they get their own shot for sales / ranking in the database. Would you lose these sales when editing more tightly?

Furthermore: some sites do not only rank the file performance, but as well the activity (e.g. amount of new uploads) of the Portfolio. So, by submitting less we get a lower ranking for our whole portfolio? Or not? That is at least my impression.

good point by both of you.
yes, i do risk it by heavy editing and sometimes i lose. but there are times in the past where i spend more time submitting the whole bunch and find that none of them got any exposure nor dls.
so i decided to do it this way...
and as tror pointed out, which ones do i choose. from experience of my own work,
i would choose maybe two or three with different perspective viewpoints
and as you both said, something that i do not personally think is the best one.

you are both right in saying many times your best sellers are not your favorite work..or something like that, and mine too.
but i do not just forget the rest of my work. i stagger them so that if for one month i see none of my new images are selling at all, i wait a few months and submit some more from that shoot.
so in a way, at the end of it, i will have submitted all the shoot, but over a period stretched out
so i don't just get all my shoot receiving no exposure in one time.

if i were submitting to other sites, which i am not, as until i get another site having an earning close enough to ss, then i would give them either whatever ss rejects or other viewpoints of the same shoot.
but never the ones i give to ss.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock Termination
« on: June 02, 2016, 19:07 »
as already mentioned, ss does not terminate an account for no grave reason.
it is either that person is using someone else's work ie stealing another person's work, or taking part of a photo or illustration from someone else.
it can also be that the person is under age or giving false personal information.

the part i am not sure is that others say here, copying. i am not sure how copying can get anyone terminated. if so, many of those copycats of yuri, sjlocke,etc.. would have been terminated a long time ago.

my guess, without you showing the faulting image is that someone has reported you
taking their work.
whatever it is, telling us here is not going to be much help, as it is best you
contact ss directly to sort it out with them.

good luck.

« on: June 02, 2016, 17:34 »
oh please not again.........

 ;)

if every newbie starts to creep on ss regarding this, it is no wonder the payments be delayed.
i would say, let all newbies be informed that unless it is the 7th of the new month,
don't flood ss with your panic, or else you will be the one adding to the delay of
getting paid.

ss has never failed to pay us... and believe me, many of us has been there for many years already.

533
It seems that the more ignorant a person is, the more dogmatic they are with their opinion

Generally those become politicians

lol, so true, ..or judges, as they control the ruling of the common people.
the politicians and judges pass the law .

you should see the comments. all of which were telling the woman who had her fb photo
included in some survey of "ugly or not" without her permission,
"serves you right".
it also refers to another similar case where the creator of fb did the same thing.
so i guess they feel that everything you put on internet, incl or esp fb
gives anyone the right to steal your photo from any social media
to be used.
iow, same applies for stock photos ,etc...

534
did anyone see this??? a woman was outraged that her photo that she posted (on social media fb i suppose) was outraged that someone took her photo and included it among many other women's photo which i assummed he took from fb without permission from these women
and put it in some "hot or not" article of his.

you should see the general consensus of the comments. one dude even said , "anything you put on internet is public domain".

huh??? no wonder our photos and videos from stock agencies are being used as "public domain".
i do not put the link here, but i found that article in msn news headline

535
yes, me too, some time last week or so, i thought.. um, what???
then i take it that they are sending me an open invitation to join Offset
and congratulate me in advance , since they see my work is so amazing  ;D

536
To me the SS system is somewhat rigged.  When I had no video with 3800 images, I made $800-$1200 a month. Now, a year later, I have 1,100 videos and still only make $800-$1200 a month. The system just split my controlled income between the two asset types.  Of course I got into video to grow my income but that has NOT happened on SS. I have nearly 5,000 assets there today. I often wonder if it would be better to pull my videos and start a new account there.

funny i was thinking the same thing all of the past months.
but i did not say so, as those ppl come in and say another conspiracy theorist.
but i can only speak for myself, ...
each time i reach that monthly average, i see as if someone flipped the switch and i see a lot of 0 days till end of the month.
in this sense, i always hope i get the large single 28 to 102 at the end of the month,
although even that has all disappeared for months too.
but really, if i reach my monthly average on the first day, i can almost be sure i will see zero days
for the rest of the month.

537
I only know that SS report for first quarter says that they paid to contributors 33 million. Thats 130 million to expect for 2016. In 2014 it was 84 million. I think Alamy paid 130 million in all the time they exist. So SS paid in one year the same as alamy in all their lifetime. First ace belongs to ss for unknown time.

Exactly. The poll has now lost most of its former credibility

exactamento. my point against alamy is that even if one person came to say alamy earned that person xxx per dl vs 38 cts with ss. i really don't give a r@t$ @$$ to that .
there are many agencies on the right that pays one or a handful contributors a lot of money
which we don't see. it can be slanted as those ppl may be the owners,etc..

ss pays me, and a lot of other contributors, money every month,
we may not make as much as the top sellers, but we make money every month with ss.

that's what make me want to contribute to an agency. not that 20 ppl make alot
and the rest make 0 views and 0 cts in the first 5 years with agency x.

General - Stock Video / Re: Model releases
« on: May 21, 2016, 16:19 »
personally, each time i shoot , even with my particular favourite model (s), i have a new MR for them to sign. it's just something every agency model is used to anyway.
as for the same day different settings, i just include them all like "lakeside, studio, etc"

as for old images where i already have submitted an MR , eg ss have a list of existing MR , and i used that .

is that what you're asking about??? i hope it helps.

539
I also recall some funny story about property release request on main Russian government building (exterior).

not so funny, actually in some countries it is forbidden, infact one could get arrested for pointing a camera in the direction of the compound of the king,etc..
in one of my assignments many years ago, in a country i was in, i was told we could not even point it towards the top of the mountain where the governor's palace was. at one time, i was even hanging about a public beach when i unknowing had my camera and wondered into an area where an old guy was walking with some very hot looking young woman. as i pointed in their direction,
but not at them, i found myself suddenly surrounded by dark suited mafia looking guys.
they asked for my passport. and later went to my hotel and someone came in to "check the airconditioning".
i touched a nerve there, and no doubt it was a politician and some woman they did not want me to see.
back to the palace , another photographer did indeed point it that direction
and got his camera checked. the distance was not even near. you could have taken a 500mm lens
and still only got the face of a mountain. absurd??? yes, but you don't want to lose any time
in a cell and have your consulate not even know where you are.

540
Dan Heller has a page indicating that animals don't need a release in the US unless they are some famous specific individual, e.g. if the star of a petting farm was Daisy the Cow, for example.
I have no idea what the Law is elsewhere. I know that it has long been held in Scotland at least (maybe all of UK?) that prohibitions about selling photos sold in zoos etc. have no basis in Law, and at least two establishments have stopped putting the restrictions on their tickets.
BUT:
1. Who wants to be in a legal case, even with a strong probability of winning.
2. The agencies can make their own rules and generally err on the side of caution, with SS seeming to me (as an outsider) to be generally laxer than iS.

Two US zoos: one has only a stated restriction on one particular building on the site, i.e. the actual architectural construction; one had a stated prohibition on any publication of photos taken there, but actively solicits photos for their social media, and has a large Flickr group.

museam, etc do require us to pay for taking photos, but they also restrict the usage to personal uses. i think they just want to control their sales of postcards,etc..
but  like you said, who is going to retain a lawyer to get back pennies from someone.
still, it is prudent to err on the side of caution, after all, it's not like you are going to make a lot of money with these type of shots.  still, if they ever reject my work on this issue,
i would not bother trying to resubmit.

April sales

Shutterstock $250 (323 sales)
Alamy $200 (5 sales)
iStock $42 (so far 100 sales)

No brainer to me Alamy always comes in at number 2 or 3 One day it will be number 1 and the naysayers will still deny you can make money with Alamy  8)

i don't think anyone is staying away from alamy not because they are without a brain like you say,
as who would not want to make the money like you do with alamy.
the fact is that only a handful of ppl are able to make money with alamy, as i said, i was there from the inception with 90% approval and did not see a penny for 5 years, nor see my name listed in their photographers' list. it's no wonder i had zero views in 5 years.

with ss, since i joined only the same time (5 years), i have reach payout almost monthly.

iow, almost everyone can make money with ss, but only a handful make money elsewhere.
that is why no one wants to bother uploading to everyone listed to the right.

542
I once went to a presentation by Joe McNally where he said the best thing about competition between Nikon and Canon is that it means better cameras for all of us. While the competition between SS and Adobe can unfortunately mean a price war, fortunately it also means they need to stay on top of their game to keep market share and still earn a profit, and concepts like this one will hopefully lead to more sales and income for us. I noticed SS also has an editing software that lets people use filters and text and resize photos, with optimum sizes for social media. I'm encouraged by this.

i agree . at the beginning ss had is to prevent them from being a monopoly. as i said before, even with all the lengthy choices of agencies to the right coloumn here, i chose to be exclusive with ss. not because i think ss deserves my exclusivity, but because i am not going to waste time and energy uploading to site that can't even attain 50% after 5 years in the market.

whatever , as someone said it's all fixed, that suddenly bring alamy to be the new contender in place of the shameless is being sold to getty, i do wish it is not fixed, and that indeed
there is alamy, and hopefully sooner , more than alamy who can maintain
a 70% rating .
this would in fact push ss to try harder to keep their older contributors happy,
... and start getting me back my single earnings of 28 to 102 dollars :)

but i won't hold my breath ...
but as nicholson (joker) once said, "this city needs an enema.." this business of microstock certainly need a giant enema too!!!

543
Otherwise you just hit one of their many clueless reviewers.

perharps so. like the same one who rejects everything for o-o-f .
the reveiwer probably saw a dog instead of a cow, and so expect you to get a release from its owner LOL
come to think of it, if every "pet" requires a release from the owner,
i should think a snake, terapin, spider,etc... might soon require a release as they are being kept as pets too.
originally, if i am not mistaken, a release is needed because it is "recognizable".
ie. a structure, piece of art, statue, fender of a distinct luxury car, even graffiti, .. are recognizable, thus the release. a pet, even though all dogs might look alike, is recognizable to its owner.
thus the joke between pet -owner justifably agreeing when someone screams out, "that is not andy...andy (her goldfish) has a freckle on her nose" !!!

544
p.s.
and maybe this might even push ss to start bringing us back those once regular 28 to 102 single earnings in an effort to keep us from moving our new works to alamy, and any one else that works hard to reward their contributors elsewhere.

545
i have never been a big fan of alamy, as i was there with them from the inception with almost a clean 100% approval. but after a few years of zero views and not even seeing my name in the photographers list, i thought that was a bit much, considering my approval ratio and regular uploads.
so i deleted my account, and stay pretty much exclusive with ss.,
who has paid me almost monthly since my inception.

but don't get me wrong, i am not for ss to be a monopoly. i was in full support for is before they
effed themselves up our youknowwhere laughing their way to the bank selling out to getty.
it is to our benefit that more than one get as close a rating as ss
so, if it is real numbers... i say, well done alamy.

in fact i weclome 2 or more sites to get past the 50% mark, as all this will be healthy for the
contributors. by then, i will begin to upload to those sites ... including alamy.

good for you ppl who brought alamy up there. keep it up.

546
LOL, right column... 123 voters 6.8%
do you really think it's worth the hassle to get your stuff approved at DP???

Software / Re: New Photoshop competitor Affinity Photo
« on: May 10, 2016, 08:11 »

I would think about an Adobe subscription if they made my portfolio on FT visible again :)

confused,  why did they make your port invisible???

548
i don't know, as i never become famous enough for ppl to steal my music, art, poetry, painting or photographs.

but you can ask willie dixon why led zeppelin claimed to have written all his music
and became known as the greatest rock band in the world

549
I've wondered about this often.

If I were the agencies, trying to give buyers the most appealing search results, one of the factors I'd use would be a weighting per photographer based on sales success.

Now, you couldn't use gross sales because that would vary with portfolio size. You'd have to use a ratio, and the most obvious one would be total sales divided by portfolio size.

This is total speculation, of course, but if it's true then you might improve your search ranking if you reduced the size of your portfolio.

I think that DT use that as one of the elements in their search
.

dt??? LOL, you believe that?? my ratio of images to sales there is 2:1 (dl:port)
i still have been earning for past 2 years more dls with ss in one week that i get with dt in 2 years
The fact that you earn more at SS is irrelevant.

WRONG ! the fact that i earn anything more at any place or any business IS RELEVANT.
that is why we are in business!!! 8)
