General Photography Discussion / Re: Editorial or not ?
« on: April 19, 2019, 02:26 »
Ignore what you see on SS Thomas just follow the guidelines, any identifiable people, brands, logos, license plates then its editorial.

Same goes for shots of buildings if the building is the primary focus unless its an old historic building
The only things Shutterstock reviewers are stricter on now are releases and the need to be Editorial. Lots of old stuff on the site that wouldn't pass now....judging by the trend there's a good chance in 5 years you won't be able to post up almost any building...or models with clothes.

2x 3,00 USD Video sales, yay!
Is a $3 video sale possible?
I tought video sales were always >$10

Sunday i uploaded my first video to Shutterstock
$1.50 is the "floor" ;-)

You have to have some trust somewhere in this industry. I see Pond5 as the best option now for video.
Or trust no-one and spread this risk.

The really big problem in MicroStock is that the business model has changed over recent years, it used to be about a partnership with the Agencies to sell our work.

What has happened is that the wealthy shareholders (the people who don't pay tax) have moved into the market financializing the companies by issuing shares to these people.

This has caused a ever need, to constantly increase dividends to these people, which basically means that most of them (except Adobe) have cut our commission rates.

Essentially by not putting up the commission rates they are exploiting artists.

What's needed is a new big player in the Market, funded by the artists and able to wipe the floor with these companies, just how to achieve this, I really don't know at the moment.

Pond5 exclusive is the answer.
until pond5 starts screwing you over. And they will, only a matter of time, based on their past history.
If you look at how Pond5 is funded it has the same commercial drivers as everyone else. There might be a niche for a small ethical co-operative but its not going "wipe the floor" with anyone.

« on: April 14, 2019, 02:35 »
While its time consuming to do categories I'm not entirely sure its a bad thing. It stops people easily submitting thousands of similars/nearly exactly the sames. Of course it would be better if images were inspected properly but we know thats not going to happen.

But to apply categories on "thousands of similars" is much easier than on thousands of various subjects... :)
Fair point kind of depends on each agencies systems

Shutterstock.com / Re: Maybe I've been asleep.....
« on: April 11, 2019, 00:56 »
but I have just noticed that SS keywords now go in alphabetical order, not the order I put them in.
Is this new? Newish? Or have I just been asleep for a long while.......?

Yeah awhile, but also you will see the order change after downloads and depending on what they might be featuring or promoting. There was some strange event where every video with Redone went to the top of the search. Shows that they can push words and alter the search rank, based on target words.

Many sites arrange as they please. AS we can set the order and it matters. Strange place this land of Microstock.

I just added a new word, it's first on the list. I can look later and see if it moved to Alpha or stayed. But just because they show Alpha, that doesn't mean the search looks at them all the same.
I believe they also change the order depending on whether buyers find them using those words. I guess its one more factor along with the algorithms that can affect sales.

I got an email from [email protected] wich is from March.22, landed in spam,

A potential buyer would like to purchase one of your files with exclusive rights SR-EL.

I have 72h to remove them from other agencies, well that would take more than 72h,

The image sells very well, dont know what to do.

Depends on how much they are willing to pay you for that.

The image is my bestseller across all agencies, i could easily re create if i choose to sell the rights, but im affraid no matter how similar i shoot another one, it would not sale as this one...

Im quite new to microstock so this numbers for EL $ are tempting  :D
I'd be a bit careful about shooting something too similar though. I'm not sure about the legality but thats not really in the spirit of exclusive rights and if I were the buyer I would be after you.

I don't get why anyone would pay 15% of their sales to get videos uploaded to Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond5, Storyblocks and VimeoStock?
I'm kind of lost too....its actually 18% it seems "BlackBox charges a 15% commission plus a transaction fee (approximately 3%) on a back end basis. ". For doing hugely less than an agency. Isn't this just adding a link to feed in the food chain? Or am I missing something?

I really didn't expect this place to be such a hostile environment, there's some toxic people here but i'm glad everyone isn't like this. Thank you to the 1 genuine response iv'e had from this forum.
Tell us who you are and what academic institution you are studying at and you might find us less so but I'm guessing you won't.

My name is Gavin Roberts and I'm studying at Staffordshire university in the third year of a Film and TV Production Technology Degree. I have no problem stating this as I am genuine. I'd be more than willing to meet in person even if someone was local. I have nothing to hide.
Thanks for that you might want to take a look at this. https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/2014-09-01%20Online%20Research%20Guidelines.pdf

Northern America and Europe aren't countries I'm afraid.
Yet......;-)

Can't you get all that info from just looking at the best sellers?

It's standard practice to the point of being a cliche to have a survey in a dissertation these days.

It is unfortunately, I'm required to seek primary research information and for my chosen path this is information from stock creators.

Like the other person who is allegedly doing an academic study, I'd expect far more official information from your university detailling your course, why this info is needed, details about you and your director of studies, where the results would be published etc, rather than just a totally anonymous survey monkey page.
In my idle moments I complete surveys for bodies doing academic research. Every survey is even accompanied by a "risk" assessment details of the institution and survey purpose AND I get paid for it ;-).

542
As part of your "Academic Studies" you should be informed that that survey would be considered totally unethical and breaking all the rules of bodies such as the Market Research Society. At the very least you should detail who you are , the purpose of the survey and what you will use the data for and how it will be processed. In the UK you could even find yourself prosecuted as you are asking for profile names which is personal data. Good luck with your studies.

543
and there was I thinking you were writing a dissertation for your Phd ~ LOL
I doubt you ever thought that somehow ;-)

544
The reason the industry has gone to shiite is because most of us enabled it too. IS was the beginning of the end, then SS and 0.25c subs was the kiss of death for the industry, with the rest to follow suite, and now the water has found it's own level. Not a heck of a lot anyone can do to make it fair and "sustainable" at this point. It's sort of an "I told you so" (circa 2007) situation for me.
Changes in Digital Technology and the Internet enabled it. Like many comparable industries.

This thread will die BECAUSE of you and the other fatalists that have no vision and are scared to death of angering the stock companies.

Oh, the drama!

Sorry, I didnt realize we elected you to moderate.  This is a discussions board and everyone is free to contribute to the discussion as they like.  If youre going to actually DO something, then go right ahead.  Nobody is stopping you.

Do you understand that I'm simply requesting that this thread not be flooded with biased commentary without substance?

What if me and several other contributors decided to chime into every polite iStock and Stocksy sales discussion thread with our opinions on those companies? Over and over and over? It would be arrogant, rude, something that should be discouraged, wouldn't it? You'd ask us to stop, wouldn't you?
No you are requesting the thread not be flooded with things that don't agree with your bias. There's far more substance in the evidence of what has happened many times in the past compared with some theoretical unspecified future initiative which is now even less likely to succeed with many contributors on here alienated by your posts.

546
I'm still getting the same amount of 'clicks' thou and CTR is the same as last year.. So either AL doesn't sell anymore or they're not reporting the sales.
My sales and zooms have stopped but I never had a huge number so its not really evidence of any real change.

123RF / Re: Payout
« on: April 07, 2019, 09:54 »
Maybe you could start a monthly club, "I made payout at 123RF this month". Small club?

A monthly club? More like an annual club or maybe even a biennial club :D

It would still be a small club though  ;D

I was trying to be nice? If I believe the poll here, there are about 30 people who make payout monthly on 123RF. (of those who take the poll) On average people report making double what they do on Dreamstime, and slightly less than DP.

All three as a group do nothing for me.  ;D
For me my rolling average shows them all very similar. At one time they were significantly ahead of the others. DP has remained constant while DT is a bit of a roller coaster...like a bad horror film just when I think its dead to springs back to life. From a logical point of view not of them merit new content

I make payout every month and do not get an email saying they are going to pay me.
If you made payout in this month you'll get paid by the 15th of next month.
Thanks

Amazingly I just stumbled over the payment threshold. Its been a while I know they pay by 16th but anyone know if they send any notification or update before sending?

I don't if they, do but its been so long since I had a payout I can't remember  :'(

I had a look back thru my email archive and couldn't find any notification emails
Thanks I will wait.
