For video, it's very possible nobody reaches Level 6 with above 25,000 sales per year for 40% royalty. It's ridiculously high hurdle. Also, I suspect only up to 50 or so reaches Level 5 with 5,000 plus sales per year for 35% royalty. So, the 99% plus of contributors got their revenue reduced by this scheme that was obvious to just prop up their profit and stock price. It worked in 2021.

Pond5 has really died down again for me this month. I wouldn't ever go exclusive with them. Also who's to say that Shutterstock can't deliver big(ger) sales? Yes there are lots of low sales which are quite pathetic but there are lot of higher sales too and overall the site performs a lot better for me than the others (namely Pond5, Adobe Stock, iStock). The attached daily video sales was just from yesterday, admittedly my best daily earnings for this year to date, but a whole lot better than the other sites even before I had these sales.
Good for you. Whatever works for you. But on average, video contributors are reporting sales have gone down to 1/4 or less from before video sub was introduced on Shutterstock. I sell my HD videos for $89 on Pond5 currently. So, I get $50 or so on regular HD sales and over $100 on 4k sales in which I price at $199. So, I don't want to give potential buyers an option to shop around and buy on Shutterstock or Adobe Stock and result in me getting $3 instead of $50-$120. Too much damage. Just doesn't make sense anymore to sell on Shutterstock or AdobeStock video subs even if I get occasional regular price or premium license sales. RPD on Shutterstock and Adobe Stock is ridiculously low now. Not worth it. Seeing those video sub sales report makes me only angry, disgusted and unhappy thinking I could've gotten more than 10x on Pond5. It's really bad for my mental health.
I do understand where you're coming from as some or even many of those commissions are pathetically low. But curious how are you going with sales on Pond5 exclusive account? Is this making up for the absence of sales from other platforms?
I explained that here. https://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-video/adobe-stock-video-subscription-1-year-later-$12-vs-$31-revenue-per-clip-sale/ But recently having slow down in sales probably because of the writers' strike in Hollywood. But I hope things will get better after strike ends.

my rpd at adobe is around 8/9$...only video...shutterstock performs better,pond5 even better but less volume...
It's possible that buyers who find your clips on Pond5 then search on Adobe Stock and Shutterstock and buy much cheaper there rather than buying on Pond5. Buyers actually shop around, just like we shop around comparing prices all the time.

On Pond5, I often have sales for $2-$4. Do exclusive authors have no such sales?
Yes, those are I think limited use enterprise license sale or whatever it is I see here and there sometimes. But I still get about $60 royalty per clip sale on average. That's way higher than Shutterstock or AdobeStock. So, I'm happy going all Pond5 Exclusive so far.

Eventually pond5 and ss will merge.
What will happen then?
Customers want a one stop shop with the same price for everything.
Maybe a year, maybe 3 years, but it is coming.
Or did ss put out a statement protecting the current p5 system for at least 10 years? Or 5? Or 1?
If SS puts out a legally binding statement, I would agree that having a lot of exclusive content at 60% is a good idea.
But p5 is now SS, so what will the new owners do?
Adding a link to pond5 is in principle a good thing, but obviously customers will want to use their ss plans to download freely on p5.
eta
Do you see p5 heavily promoting their exclusive plan with 60% royalty?
If they wanted to dominate the market, they would very heavily promote that. Also put out legally binding statements, that this will not change.
But I dont see them doing that.
You are promoting a vision the company it self is not promoting.
Pond5 actually is promoting contributors to become Exclusive. https://www.pond5.com/sell-stock-footageYou have very little experience selling on Pond5 and also selling stock videos. So, I don't take your opinion seriously to be honest in regard to stock videos. I don't think Shutterstock will just make Pond5 into Shutterstock. I think Shutterstock will keep Pond5's own business model as it is. Having 2 totally different business model generating revenue is their strength.

Pond5 tried that when they first launched the exclusive program.
The early requirements for being exclusive there was to totally remove videos from all other agencies. I was taken aback when they invited me and told me that. I just couldn't do it.
Then I heard a few big guys were involved. I mean, the big guys, and I was shocked. They were even on-camera in the official Pond5 testimonial videos promoting the exclusive program.
My jaw was on the floor when I watched these testimonials. These portfolios are going to be gone from all agencies except Pond5? Wow. That's big.
But then Pond5 back-tracked and revised their requirements. They now said they would allow a second exclusive account on Pond5 and videos there had to be exclusive to Pond5. Users would be permitted to keep their other Pond5 account(s) and let them keep those videos on other agencies.
Well, that's where things failed. I gather Pond5 got a lot of flack from these big producers realizing the income lost if their clips were removed everywhere. That's too big of a gamble. So, Pond5 changed the rules.
Now, if things went as planned from the get go, we'd be in a different place now. But, it didn't go that way.
In theory, Pond5 exclusivity was a sound business model. In practice, it didn't work out.
So I feel exclusivity at this point is a pipe dream.
Pond5 Exclusive didn't make sense at all when Shutterstock and AdobeStock weren't doing cheap video subs. But now it's a different story, I think. Now Shutterstock having Pond5 link on it's homepage, Pond5 stock videos are good option to Shutterstock Select.

Mostly $2.80, $5.60, and $8.60 commissions these days with the occasional $24.50, $56, and $70 thrown in there.
You only sell videos on AdobeStock? That looks not bad at least.

Buyers had no problem paying $79/HD just 3 years ago. I know in any business, a bulk sellers get better deal from suppliers as in Walmart and Costco, but not like in extreme of video sub sales on Shutterstock, AdobeStock etc. It would be insane to do that in any other retail industry. If we the creators decide to un-publish videos on Shutterstock and delete all videos on AdobeStock and go Pond5 Exclusive, Pond5 will be the only stock video site with massive collections for buyers. If you are making pennies now on Shutterstock and AdobeStock video sales, what are you got to lose by going Pond5 Exclusive for a year and see what happens. You can turn on your video portfolio on Shutterstock instantly if it doesn't work. And you can re-upload your best selling clips on AdobeStock again. Re-imagine for a better world for us stock video creators!!

I don't know when they added it under "Video" on top of their homepage, but I hope this will steer some Shutterstock video buyers to Pond5.

I deleted all my videos on AdobeStock in early May because of $2.80 video sub sales dominating my sales report. Is AdobeStock video sales following the same path Shutterstock video sub sales have become? Our future and present seem not bright, but I don't have to surrender to those cheap sub sale agencies. I'd rather not help those who destroy us. lol

Writers' strike in the US started on May 2nd. That timing pretty much coincide with when the low video sales started. I've heard there are not much video production going on in Hollywood now. Or is it the AI effect?

Those users don't know about licensing of copyrighted materials probably. I don't think majority of users read disclaimer.

uber positiv, great smiles, shiny happy peoplewhat else is supposed to sell?
The customers dont care how you create what they need.
There are also other trends and markets, but obviously those who create what customers want with ai, will make the most money.
To whom are you talking to? Who said those kinds of clips dont sell?

Any reasonable contributor would laugh at what Doug says... - 5 minutes to colour-grade the quality video, provide metadata and upload/submit - 348$ per hour earning rate - not including travel and fuel costs in the calculation.
C'mon, guys, why are you splitting hairs and dealing with semantics when such BS is being shovelled right in front of you? It defies logic and experience on such a spectacular level that even the discussion about it should seem preposterous. He's trying again to sell courses - fine by me, but not at the expense of gaslighting contributors into believing such outlandish claims.
Exactly. It's ridiculous to make $348/hr claim. It's disingenuous at least to make such a bogus claim to unsuspecting newbies. It's laughable. lol In reality, many people in the industry knows it can often end up less than minimum wage per hour after 3, 4 years of low/no sales.

This is one of current Adobe Stock best selling portfolio. https://stock.adobe.com/contributor/286186/Rafa%20FernandezIt's all AI generated images. Very nice images. You don't even need a camera. You can generate so many in hours rather than doing actual photo shoots with models and paid locations. How can photographers compete with this from now on? At the same time, AI is a new opportunity. There are so many videos on YouTube on how to make money from AI generated images. I got to be prepared what I should do with AI generated videos in future. This is frightening.

No worries, Ralf.
Discussing workflows is perfectly fine.
But there is difference between discussing workflows and chestbeating yourself with an absurd (for microstock) $348/hour earnings, only because you have fun doing your work.
And all this, to impress some who will be will be willing to pay for his get-rich-quick course. But since this hasn't happened here, yet: "In dubio pro reo"
Thank you Zero for your reply.
However, I still do not understand the aggressiveness in the discussion.
As I understand it, the agitation is the $348/hour. Of course, that in itself is very lurid and attention grabbing. But Doug was also fair enough to explain how the total came about.
I can relate to all of this in that I am in the same situation and my bill looks similar.
Professionally, I do something completely different full time. Stock photography is purely a hobby for me. High quality cameras and other equipment were already in place. The photography itself I do not see as work, but as relaxation from my actual job. During this time I could have also watched TV, read a book or done something else. So for me, this is also not working time, but relaxing leisure. It's the same with image post-processing.
Without it being my intention at the beginning, I now regularly earn money with it.
From this personal point of view, which is also ultimately Doug's, I find the absolute numbers presented - leaving aside the hourly wage - very impressive. At least for a hobby. And that's how I understood Doug's explanations here.
I also do something else full time.
But if you understand the "Jensen logic", which wrongly claims that he is making $348/hour, because he only accounts for the time spent keywording, then you also must agree that those who have fun shooting (while doing something else full time, like us) AND also have fun keywording, must be making ♾️/hour.
Presenting his absolute numbers while leaving out his $348/hour silly falacy should be perfectly fine.
Thank you, now I have finally understood your argumentation.
But Doug's hourly wage is still not wrong, he just defined the conditions differently than you or others and explained it the same way. Now I can go to sleep calmly
The point is, the vast majority of stock video contributors agree that his calculation of $348/hr is BS because we the professionals always calculate business expenses into account. And the way he was acting like arrogant bully on Shutterstock forum, everybody remembers that not so favorably. I have many enemies who dislikes me on forums, but he does too it seems. And since he already made those "Get rich quick with stock video" tutorial videos, he had to advertise "$348/hr" when in reality probably majority of people who try doing stock videos end up making less than minimum wage especially since Shutterstock started the video subs in 2020.

I think I have to buy his "How to make $$$ uploading videos to Shutterstock" tutorial video. I'm nowhere near making $350/hr. I've been doing this totally wrong way.
That might be true about doing it the wrong way. What is your process? I'd be happy to take a look at your best clips and give you some free feedback on the subject matter, editing, grading, and of course, the all important metadata. Post a link.
It's OK. I'm too embarrassed after seeing your $$$ figure. I totally suck at this. I should go back to delivering newspapers.

Hey guys, your favorite arrogant jerk has arrived at the party!! How ya'll doing? It is nice to feel your love. Kisses to everyone.
I thought you might like an update on my continued success with stock footage.
As of July 3, 2023 Lifetime earnings at Shutterstock: $217,011 Lifetime earnings at Adobe: $23,938 Lifetime earnings at Pond5: $12,000 (approximate) Lifetime earnings at Getty: $13,977 Total: $266,926
Number of clips in Shutterstock portofilo: 9187 (with far fewer clips at other agencies)
Average earning per clip (so far): $29.05 Average time to edit, grade, add metadata, and upload each clip: 5 minutes 5 minutes = 12 clips per hour 12 x $29.05 = $348 per hour
So, I've already earned $348 per hour for my work, and those clips continue to earn money everyday. Not as much as they used to due to Shutterstock's changes a couple of years ago (completely out of my control), but I still have a nice steady income stream from work I already did a long time ago.
I have never hidden the fact that I do not factor in my time to shoot stock because I only shoot for fun. There is nothing in my portfolio that I didn't want to shoot or regretted shooting. It is all fun to me. No different than other people going fishing or golfing or hiking, etc. which they don't expect to be paid for. Only a moron can't understand that shooting for stock can be a legitimate leisure activity. Just because you hate it doesn't mean other people don't get pleasure from shooting.
I have also never hidden the fact that I do not factor in the cost of my camera equipment or computer hardware/software because I already own them because I actually work in the TV/video production industry. My gear is already bought and paid for from other sources and would be just sitting on the shelf gathering dust when I am not working on a paid gig.
So my income for the actual the work and drudgery of stock (creating the metadata) is $348. The numbers don't lie. They are just facts.
Now, if YOU think shooting stock is work or a chore or you hate doing it for whatever reason, then YOU should factor that into your own calculations. If YOU only use your camera gear for stock and never for any other purpose, then YOU should probably factor those costs into your own calculations. I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT.
So, my friends, success is its own reward. Please continue with all the put-downs, insults, and name-calling you want. I'm laughing all the way to the bank while you're all just still whining about how the agencies are out to get you. Get over it. If you want to play the victim card, be my guest.
U R the GOAT!!
