The guy behind FAA seems to have a 5 minute attention span. Every couple of months he announces some big new 'opportunity'. "Designer discounts", image licensing, shower curtains, catalog sales through retail stores... and now electronic subscriptions. Anything except helping us sell what we want to sell at the price we want to get.

To that end they've given him 10 times the coverage of other candidates - free of charge. And they'll continue playing ball with him until the election - by running soft-pitch stories like "Trump refuses to back down" instead of going after his ridiculous and inconsistent statements. Playing ball with Trump doesn't mean you're for, or against, him, politically. It means you give him free publicity that reinforces his image, and you make money by doing it. Huffington Post churns out over-the-top political correctness, exaggerating what Trump actually says. Then they sell the outrage, and Trump gets another soft pitch to hit out of the park. This is followed by more "Trump refuses to back down" and "Trump stands by his remarks" headlines. And his numbers go up. Here's part of what Les Moonves, CEO of CBS, said to an investor gathering in January: Ive never seen anything like this, and this is going to be a very good year for us. Sorry. Its a terrible thing to say. But, bring it on, Donald. Keep going." 554

If this ever really happens, my guess is that it would be aimed at places like doctors' offices and hotels. Those people won't want to spend time combing through FAA's search results. Instead, FAA will offer them "playlists" full of proven sellers, probably with nice themes like "peaceful landscapes", "urban nights", "country living", "island tranquility" etc. There would probably be dozens of photos in a playlist so even if you're lucky enough to get in one, you'll get next to nothing. Established sellers, already in FAA's "collections", might make some money, say by getting into a hotel chain.
This was inevitable, as display prices come down. For most of us it will be just another way for a reseller to make money off of our work without paying us anything, while reducing its perceived value. 555

Really no surprises here. Thanks, that was interesting. I actually didn't know about all the conflict and turnover. It seems to me that nothing salvageable was left, and I wonder why new investment came in. Sounds like they should have just shuttered it. If someone wanted to pick up the pieces and head in a new direction, they should have made that clear in the email to contributors. Instead, it was just - starting now, you will get a lot less, take it or leave it. Nothing about marketing plans or future possibilities, no apologies, no candor, no hope. After reading that, who's going to spend the time uploading hundreds of photos? 556
Print on Demand Forum / Re: FAA now talking about 'subscriptions'« on: March 24, 2016, 11:05 »assuming some customer will stream only 1000 pictures a month and you will get all his money for your only picture he downloaded you'll end up with 1 cent. Maybe too optimistic :-). I'm guessing about 90% of the "subscription fee" goes to FAA and its new partner, so you and the rest of the contributors who got downloaded will split up that remaining $1. 557

When logging in, FAA contributors are now being asked for a 'yes' or 'no' opinion on a new plan. Here's an excerpt:
"Fine Art America is in discussions with a major electronics manufacturer about co-developing a large-format digital picture frame which would hang on a wall and allow the owner of the picture frame to stream FAA images to the picture frame using an iPhone or Android phone. The owner of the picture frame would pay a monthly subscription fee (e.g. $10 per month) for the ability to stream any image from Fine Art America to the picture frame at any time. You (the image owner) would get paid based on how many minutes your image appeared on the digital picture frame during a given month. Please read below for complete details." Needless to say, your markup is ignored - you have no control over pricing, you get whatever they decide to pay, and I assume that will be pennies. I couldn't click "NO" fast enough. But watch the FAA forum for gushy posts thanking "Sean" for this "great new opportunity". 558

But if Trump somehow manages to get elected, that all changes and the media sets out to bring him down. That's when they'll start to pull all the skeletons out of the closet, and go for his blood. They'll do their best to push it all the way to impeachment. It won't be pretty. Chaos and conflict is what they want, what they sell, and what they know how to create. 560
New Sites - General / Re: 500px - Kelly Thompson strikes again« on: March 23, 2016, 10:45 »
A couple of weeks ago I was getting ready to upload 200-300 photos. I held back because of the tedious upload process and the issue of displayed image size being too large - decided I'd wait and see the new direction before spending all that time. Well, here's the new direction: straight down.
I just closed my account. By now we've all been through the experience of uploading hundreds of photos to a new site, then getting the knife later and realizing we've wasted a lot of time. So the next new site I consider will have to show a clear direction, a fair trade (50% commission) policy and a business plan that makes sense for both them and us. 561

Bush did get a resolution, although not an actual declaration of war. By that point the runup was well under way, the drums were pounding and voting against it would have been political suicide. I'm pretty sure he made it clear the invasion would take place with or without the resolution. And Congress hadn't declared war against Afghanistan, which we'd already attacked. The details don't matter, because someone like Trump doesn't care about legalities or historical precedents. 562

Something similar happened here in Minnesota a few years ago, when we elected former pro wrestler Jesse Ventura as Governor. Apparently a lot of people thought it would be cool to tell their friends they voted for him. Actually he was not a bad guy, and he brought some experienced and reasonable people with him to run the government - although as it turned out, he had little interest in doing that himself.
We can elect a celebrity doofus as mayor or Governor and life goes on, because other people can run things for them while they mug for the cameras. But the Presidency isn't a joke, it's life and death for thousands of people around the world. You don't vote for some idiot just to "send a message to Washington", that's beyond foolish. 564
New Sites - General / Re: 500px - Kelly Thompson strikes again« on: March 21, 2016, 21:43 »
I'm just left wondering where it's all supposed to lead. And why more investment would have come into 500px last year, if it was already doomed. Just cutting commissions again and again - well, it's been tried. It only works AFTER you have 50 million stock images in your archives, and a big customer base. For 500px, this huge commission cut will just cost them the content and contributors that I would think they'd need, to build the business. Where do they go from here?

I can actually accept that the original 500px plan wasn't working, and investors came in and wanted a new plan. What I don't get is how this announcement could be part of a coherent plan.
Maybe if they'd combined it with announcements of a new marketing direction, automatic downsizing/watermarking of displayed images, hiring of a reviewing staff, a streamlined uploading process, and answers to a number of obvious questions we've been asking about where 500px is going and how it will work, it might have made some sense. Instead, we see millions in venture capital come in, new management, months of silence and then a drum roll and: "our new plan is that you get a lot less". 566

Wow, I post my theories (see above) and within a day I'm proven wrong. Instead we get the now-familiar 'sustainability' announcement about massive royalty cuts. So, that's it for 500px, as far as I'm concerned. Moving on now.

At this point, it's pretty clear nothing is happening at 500px as we know it today. None of the obvious questions are being answered and there's no evidence of any investment in the site. So I guess there are 2 possibilities. One is that there's been some sort of internal meltdown or gridlock. The other is that they aren't going forward with the current 500px but are developing an entirely new site based on a different model, which will be announced in time. All that venture capital they took in last year has to go somewhere so my prediction is #2.

The first, and biggest, question is: do you have the means to market yourself, or would you be relying on the POD site itself, and/or search engines, for whatever sales you might get? If the latter, then I'd say FAA is unfortunately, despite its serious problems and limitations, the only game in town.
FAA lets you set your own markup, and some people actually go there looking for wall art. I don't think both of those statements are true for any of the others. 571

So expect to see an all new Trump, more mainstream and less crazy, and also expect the news media to continue to play right along with him and give him exactly the sort of coverage he wants - while at the same time badgering Clinton about an email server. "Insider trading", "underhanded dealings", what are you referring too, specifically, and where is there a scrap of evidence for any of it? Are you imagining that Trump would even bring up the "wall" again after being elected? Or that there are no skeletons in Trump's very large closet? Or that a guy who's been through 4 bankruptcies is the one to run the government "like a business"? 573

"Designer Prints" is all about cutting your markup by 90% for any buyer calling himself a "designer". And Sean Broihier (FAA owner) is all about making new deals like "Deck The Walls" to sell your work while slashing your markup. The thing that really gags me is the posts in the FAA forum that greet each new scheme with "Thanks Sean for this great new opportunity!". If you express negative opinions, they lock the threads or ban you from the forum.
